Romantics Anonymous
(Les Emotifs Anonymes)
Director: Jean-Pierre Améris, France, 2011
Duration: 77 mins Cert: 12A Language: French
Starring: Benoît Poelvoorde, Isabelle Carré, Lorella Cravotta,
Lise Lamétrie, Swann Arlaud, Pierre Niney.
Spurred on by her Romantics Anonymous meetings - a 12-step
programme to help people shy away from being shy - Angélique
(Carré) finds work at a local chocalatiers. Her new boss, Jean-René
(Poelvoorde), has a reputation for being mean to cover up his
own horrendous bashfulness around women. We follow their
atypical romance, willing them - and the chocolate firm - to
make it against the odds.
With a taut script and using musical numbers to garner laughs,
this sugar-rush romance never becomes overwhelming thanks
to an undercurrent of absurdity. Like the chocolate at its heart,
this frothy, funny and utterly charming romantic comedy, is
sweet, a little indulgent and over all-too-quickly but leaves a
lingering glow of happiness - Amber Wilkinson, Eye For Film

Presents
Pat Shortt ‘I Am The Band’
Pat Shortt’s new one man show is a tribute night to
Dixie Walsh (Jumbo Breakfast Roll, Where Did My Money Go),
a solo lounge musician. His peers and friends (the audience)
come to celebrate his career as he reminisces about the
struggles he has had to endure to get to the top of his game.
Dixie steps out of his character roles in Pat’s sell-out shows
‘You Won’t Get Away With That Here’ and ‘The Hall’ to take
centre stage and share his unique style of music with the
assembled - as does his mother, his teacher and other locals
who queue up to recall their daft memories of Dixie and
his music.
One of Ireland’s best-loved comedians, Pat Shortt’s quirky interpretation of rural Irish characters
has bought him international acclaim. I Am The Band is a hilarious look at life on the back roads
between Ireland’s dance halls, and a tribute to one of this country’s true music legends - Dixie Walsh.

Hotbuckle Productions for Carlow Arts Festival Éigse 2012 Presents
JUNE
Great Expectations
Adapted for the stage by Adrian Preater.
After triumphing at Listowel Writers Week in 2011, UK theatre company Hotbuckle - troubadours
to the bone - return to these shores for the Dickens bicentenary. With just five actors of astonishing
versatility playing the full array of roles, this troupe explode onto the stage with this innovative
and exhilarating adaptation of one of Dickens’ greatest novels.
With all the comedy, mystery, violent melodrama, suspense and poignancy of the original, it tells of
Pip’s journey from boyhood to manhood as he seeks to discover who he is and find his place in an
inhospitable world. It is a story of love and loss, of guilt and shame, of fear and courage and has
some of the most vivid and memorable characters in all of English literature.
‘...moving (and) humorous ….these creative, versatile and
visionary actors excel, delighting the audience …… this production
is a clever and novel re-birth of a famous classic.’ The Public Reviews

Carlow Arts Festival Éigse 2012 Presents
Pierce Turner & VeRRy Small Orchestra
JUNE
This summer sees the return to the stage of Pierce Turner and the release
of his first studio album in seven years. Born and raised in Wexford town,
Pierce Turner’s musical journey began as a soprano in his school choir,
moved through clarinet, piano, The Beatles, Dylan and Pink Floyd, various
beat groups, folk rock collectives, and then graduated to collaborations with
singer/guitarist Larry Kirwan and then avant garde composer Philip Glass.
Something of a resilient renegade in the entertainment business, Pierce
Turner has achieved the kind of critical acclaim that most musicians would
steal for. This ‘heir apparent to Van Morrisson’ - Joyce with a Voice - was
described by critic Geoff Wallis as ‘one of the most devastatingly innovative,
constructively creative and ridiculously overlooked songwriters and
musicians of the last few decades’. Turner will take to the stage with his
VeRRy Small Orchestra, including Rian Trench on drums, Garvan Gallagher
on bass, and Lynda O’Connor on violin. www.pierceturner.com

Howard Reddy & Hanan Tarabay
In Concert with Aoife O’Sullivan (Piano)
Howard Reddy and Hanan Tarabay are both dynamic vocalists known for their
primarily classical repertoire throughout Europe and North America. In a
concert arranged specially for a visit to Ireland from their homes in Florida,
they will combine their love of the classical and folk traditions with some
contemporary American classics. Popular arias such as Bizet's Habanera from

and some favourites like Morricone's Nella Fantasia, or Neopolitan favourite
O Sole Mio, will sit alongside Someone to Watch Over Me, My Way and perhaps
even a duet of Danny Boy. In what promises to be one of the Festival highlights,
this uplifting musical evening is a great welcome home for Howard Reddy, a

Travel back to a golden age of cinema in this enchanting, comedic

Unhappily married, Valentin has unwittingly stolen the heart of a

to the “talkies”, Valentin balks at the prospect: who would want to
hear actors speaking? Valentin takes it upon himself to keep the silent

PJ Gallagher - Raging
PJ has played sold out shows throughout Ireland and at the
biggest and best comedy festivals that the country has to
offer including Kilkenny Cat Laughs and The Carlsberg Comedy
Carnival. He has been an almost permanent fixture on Irish
television since Naked Camera arrived to RTE in 2005 and since
then he has gone on to make his own series, Makin' Jake, in the
USA and documentary, Back in the Saddle, all about his exploits
and adventures in his other passion of motorbike racing. He
is still racing and hopes to one day make it to the Manx GP.
‘For a man who ambushes people as they go about their
everyday business, makes them uncomfortable and mines
their embarrassment for laughs, there is something strangely
appropriate about PJ Gallagher’s route into comedy.’

The Group presents
The ‘Live’ Last Waltz
DIRECT FROM
THE OLYMPIA
“The Last Waltz”, was a live show filmed and directed by
Martin Scorsese which commemorates the history and music
of Bob Dylan and ‘The Band’ and is regarded as the greatest
rock and roll concert movie of all time. Of course it was the
guest list on the night that turned it into the greatest gig of
all time as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison,
Muddy Waters, Dr John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Ronnie
Hawkins and a host of others joined The Band on stage.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the movie last year, a
collective of some of Dublin’s most renowned musicians
under the name “The Group”, set about the impossible task
of recreating the 2 hour show live in tribute to the original
concert. This brilliant tribute night not only stars The Group
themselves as The Band (naturally!), but also features a
whole host of special musical guest-stars from the Dublin
music scene! The night is a real treat for both fans of these
legendary musicians and anyone else who loves good oldfashioned rock and country music.
