We are very pleased to have recently been able to co-opt Dion Edwards to the board. Many of you will know Dion from all the volunteer work he does for the school. Dion provides sound technical expertise for the board in many areas and has started with vigour, challenging us on new technology options for the school and more. Thanks Dion. As reported recently in many media channels, schools in New Zealand rely heavily on the school and local community to raise funds and ensure that children have the best possible start to their education. We would like to thank you all for contributing through donations and through all the superb events run by the Family and Friends committee. I would note that we are very fortunate to have Justine Ross who leads the Family and Friends group exceptionally well, with amazing dedication to the school. From a governance perspective we review different aspects of the school’s performance at our monthly meetings and we are always pleased with the collective school results. The teaching staff have a genuine desire to see your children succeed in many ways and challenge themselves regularly on what can be done differently. We also have various forms of external assessment of the management team and school systems. These reports are consistent in their praise of Point View School and its performance. As a board we are also keenly focussed on ensuring the school allocates money and resources in the most effective manner to enhance education outcomes. With the additional money raised from the community we fund additional teaching support, technology and infrastructure. We are fortunate to have an excellent range of skills on the board and trustees who are focussed on supporting the leadership team of the school, ensuring there is good governance, a positive culture and defined processes operating within the school. Enjoy the rest of Term 2, only four weeks to go! Grant Webster Chairman Board of Trustees Our school account number is 12-3040-0730060-01 for Internet banking. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped out at our school disco. It was a great success. Welcome to our new students Ryan Ahern, Giuliana Hancock, Eugene Janssen, Negaar Bassam-Tabar and Abbey Pook. At the Family and Friends AGM we said goodbye to two of our executive, who have resigned but will be staying on the committee. Rhonda Gamble has been a part of the committee for eleven years, with the past six as treasurer, and during this time she has been an integral part of many events. Claire Edmondson has been secretary for the past three years and has done a wonderful job of keeping us all on track and communicating with our school community. I would like to thank both of these wonderful ladies for all of their hard work and commitment. The exciting news is that we do have a new secretary, Cherie King, who is new to the committee but has shown her wonderful organisation skills already. She will be an asset to the committee and our school. Congratulations Cherie. I will be staying on in the Chairperson role till the end of the year and would love to hear from anyone who would like to work alongside me with a view to stepping into this role next year. If you are interested please email us on [email protected] or pop into the office and have a chat. Miss Norton and New Zealand’s only orca researcher, Dr Ingrid Visser, have written a children’s book. Since our last AGM, we have raised over $47,000 for the school, which goes directly back into providing the best resources for your child. Without the wonderful support of the parents in the school we wouldn’t have been able to produce such a fabulous result, and for this we thank you. So far it is only available at Point View School! Be one of the first families in New Zealand to own this book! Please consider coming along to our next meeting on 7 July at 7.30pm in the upstairs staff room. It’s a great way to become involved and meet new people within the school community. All money raised from book sales, goes directly to the Orca Research Trust (NZ). http://www.orcaresearch.org Justine Ross, Chairperson The Orca Research Trust and Dr. Ingrid Visser work tirelessly to research and help orca in New Zealand and around the world. As part of a unit around kitchen chemistry (heating and cooling), the senior ESOL group made Hokey Pokey. We focused on using action verbs and it gave us all a taste of Kiwiana! The book is only $20.00 and gives you an insight into the lives of New Zealand orca. It can be purchased from Room 6, before or after school. Middle school students finally got to go on their Autumn Walk. Why use the Walking School Bus? Our Walking School Buses have been running now for over seven years. This is a great way for children and parents to get to know their school community. The walking school bus children feel that they have friends throughout the school and the parents helping us enjoy having chats with the children and other parents. Trees for Survival update Last year our Year 5 students potted seedlings and this year the same children planted over 700 of these with the help of parents out at Papakura. The best thing is that we are cutting down on traffic at our school gate and keeping our children safe. We have three WSB routes: Kilkenny Drive, Tarnica Road and Santa Ana Drive. If you have any further questions about the buses either contact our Coordinator Marion Galloway on 021 325 376 or [email protected] or visit http://www.pointview.school.nz/parents/walkingschool-bus/map-contact-details/ Buddy classes Room 29 and Room 2 planting in the hive.
