The BYA’s mission is “the prevention and reduction of juvenile delinquency, child abuse, and child neglect by providing positive alternatives to children and families through community involvement.” BYA is sponsored by Oakland County Circuit Court – Family Division, the Birmingham Public School District, the City of Birmingham, and the Villages of Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, and Franklin. For 50 years, BYA has successfully maintained this mission. It has been our commitment and privilege to help strengthen families through community involvement. For years, BYA has sponsored positive family events such as Breakfast with Santa, the Kids’ Dog Show, Youth in Service Appreciation, and Touch a Truck. BYA also provides short term counseling, family education programs, school prevention programs, camp scholarships, and a mentoring program for youth. You will find these events highlighted in this booklet and more information about the events, programs, and services that BYA offers can be found on our website. The sponsors listed in this booklet help BYA carry out our mission of providing positive and supportive activities for youth and families. We hope that you will recognize and support these organizations and businesses that understand the importance of youth education and development and family involvement. We would like to thank our volunteers, businesses, sponsors, and other nonprofit organizations who have continued to support us during these difficult times. Through their confidence and commitment to us, we can continue to provide “positive alternatives for children and their families.” WE are BYA! YOU are BYA! Birmingham, MI 48009 248-644-0820 www.stjamesbirmingham.org 18 19 BYA Caseworker’s Greeting Birmingham Youth Assistance is as strong as the communities it encompasses. We are successful because of you! BYA was founded on the principal of unity and coordination between various entities; including Oakland County, Birmingham Public Schools and the municipalities. For 50 years you have supported the mission to “strengthen youth and familyand reduce the incidence of delinquency, neglect, and abuse through community involvement.” BYA is merely the catalyst for your success. BYA is a two-pronged program focusing on primary and secondary prevention. Primary prevention consists of programing efforts such as Family Education, Shoplifting Prevention, Camp Scholarships, Youth in Service Appreciation, Breakfast with Santa, The Kid’s Dog Show, and Touch-a-Truck. Secondary prevention is supported through casework services. We provide confidential, family focused services to enhance the lives of those around us. We assist in the identification of potential misgivings through an individualized family assessment process and connect families with viable resources,in their community, to help actualize their goals. During this past year, 67 youth were referred to BYA for various reasons, including; minor in possession, possession of marijuana, retail fraud, MDOP, and short-term counseling related to school and family issues. During times like these, where families have become more stressed and resources more scarce we continue to trudge through, if only because of you. We appreciate your support in the past and look forward to what we can realize together in the future. Thank you volunteers, community sponsors and families……….. YOU ARE BYA! Sincerely, Nikki Keller, M.S. Birmingham Youth Assistance Caseworker 20 1956‐2011 BYA is proud to honor our friend Detecve Ron Halcrow. He was a supporter of Birmingham Youth Assistance and served as the Birmingham Police Department Liaison at Seaholm High School. Ron’s passion and commitment for his job truly made a difference in the lives of our local youth. 21 When you think of flowers… Think of Blossoms Fresh Flowers & Arrangements Candles & Gifts Blossoms Now Purchase Online www.blossomsbirmingham.com 33866 Woodward Avenue @ Adams Road 248-644-4411 Congratulates Birmingham Youth Assistance on 50 Years of Promong Healthy Families!
