Perspectives
25 years of Protectosil®
A lot can happen in 25 years: Global maps change,
technologies conquer the world, and new inventions are
developed to enrich our lives. In our fast-paced world,
25 years of success in the market is a remarkable
performance by a specialty chemical product. Protectosil®
has been protecting buildings all over the world for 25 years.

25 years of Protectosil
We are proud to have such a successful, sustainable, and
future-oriented product in our portfolio and thank our
customers for their support and loyalty over the past 25 years.
Editorial
Come travel the world with us. Let us show you cultural attractions, bridges,
monuments and modern buildings in a way you have never seen them before.
We will open up new perspectives – guaranteed!
Evonik made a contribution to each of the 25 buildings presented on the pages
of this book. Protectosil® shields the Sydney Opera House, ensures trouble-free
coal transport in South Africa, protects bridges in Switzerland and China from wind
and weather, and makes parking garages and shopping centers in the U.S. and
Germany resistant to contamination and snow. At the same time, it helps maintain
historically protected art and culture monuments around the world, including the
Baha‘i temple in India, the Beylerbeyi Palace Gate in Istanbul, or the Moyland Castle
in Germany.
Especially in the case of bridges and roads, which must be maintained with public
funds, the use of Protectosil® speaks for the foresight of architects and engineers,
who prefer prevention over cost-intensive restorations or repairs at a later date.
Protectosil® products extend the life cycle of our public infrastructure.
We invite you to journey through 25 years of Protectosil®. Protectosil® opens
up perspectives.

1989 – Cathedral in Thann
Alsace, France
Building
The Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut in the Alsatian town of Thann is a masterpiece of
Gothic architecture. The portal of the western facade, with a height of 18 meters and
a width of 8 meters, shows 150 sculpted scenes from the Old and New Testament.
The sculptures include some 500 figures.
Protection with Protectosil®
Just as humans have to protect their skin against sunlight, wind, and rain, the
600-year-old sculptures needed extensive treatment with Protectosil® 300 to tell their
stories for many generations to come.

Building
The Sydney Opera House, with a length of 183 meters and a width of 118 meters,
is situated within a park on Sydney’s harbor. The 67-meter-high roof, redesigned
more than a dozen times over the course of six years because of its complex geometry,
is covered with over a million white ceramic tiles and houses different theaters.
Protection with Protectosil®
As a penetrating hydrophobic agent for concrete, brick masonry, and ceramic tiles,
Protectosil® BSM 400 reliably protects the structure against moisture rising from the
sea and improves the interior climate for the approximately four million annual visitors.

Project
Among numerous other natural resources, South Africa has extensive coal deposits.
Heavily loaded railroad cars roll over kilometers of railroad tracks from the coal mines
to the ports, where the energy resource is loaded and shipped all over the world.
Protection with Protectosil®
The enormous strain and contact with water have over the years led to heavy cracks
and some weakening in the concrete ties underneath the tracks. The treatment with
Protectosil® BHN prevented further water ingress and stopped the expansion of the
alkaline silica reaction.

1993 – Container terminal Zeebrugge
Bruges, Belgium
Project
The same event that created a boom in one of Europe‘s most important trade cities
would be a disaster for today‘s Bruges-Zeebrugge port. In 1134, a storm surge tore a
shipping channel into the Zwin Bay, creating direct access to the North Sea from the
city of Bruges, which is located a few kilometers inland. Today, the Bruges-Zeebrugge
port is one of the most modern in Europe.
Protection with Protectosil®
Modern technology effectively protects people, land, and buildings from the sea.
Studies by the University of Leuven at the quay wall of the container terminal showed
that its life expectancy could be extended by more than 100 years with Protectosil®
BHN treatment, an argument that was not lost on the operators.

Attinghausen, Uri, Switzerland
Building
Bridges span obstacles such as deep gorges, scenic valleys, or raging waters. The
bridge in the Swiss town of Attinghausen crosses the Reuss, Switzerland‘s fourthlargest river after the Rhine, the Aare, and the Rhone, with a length of 159 km.
Protection with Protectosil®
By choosing to protect their bridge with Protectosil® BHN, the Swiss proved that their
quality awareness goes far beyond clock manufacturing and chocolate production. The
decision not only enhanced the town‘s environment, but also the way that leads to it.

Building
A bridge-and-tunnel structure crosses the Great Belt to connect the Danish islands
of Funen and Zealand and to provide an easy travel route from Germany to Sweden.
With a length of 2,694 meters and a main span of 1,624 meters, the eastern bridge is
Europe‘s longest suspension bridge and the world‘s third longest.
Protection with Protectosil®
With very few exceptions, the bridge is open 24 hours a day, year-round.The wind,
weather, and traffic conditions both within and high above the sea create some special
challenges for operation and maintenance. The application of Protectosil® BHN protects the structure against water-soluble contaminants and water to keep the traffic
rolling, day in and day out.

Monroe County, Indiana, USA
Building
Parking garages all over the world have to contend with water, dirt, and salt coming in
with vehicles, which causes corrosion and affects durability. Corrosion rate measurements of the stabilizing reinforcement structure in the Monroe County parking garage
documented the diagnosis of heavy active corrosion.
Protection with Protectosil®
Following years of repeated repair cycles and upon recommendation from a consulting
engineer, the owner decided to include a surface applied corrosion inhibitor, Protectosil®
CIT, as part of the repair strategy. Protectosil® CIT provides multi-functional protection
to reinforced concrete, penetrating to and chemically bonding with reinforcing steel
while also reacting within concrete matrix to impart hydrophobicity. Corrosion monitoring over 11 years provides proof that the treatment was successful.

Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain
Project
The local crucifix sculpture in Cordoba is popularly known as the “Christ of the Lanterns.”
Designed in 1794 by Juan Navarro León, it is located on the Plaza de los Capuchinos
in the Andalusian city of Córdoba, surrounded by a fence beset with lanterns.
Protection with Protectosil®
The fence was an attempt by the city council to prevent graffiti taggers from leaving
their marks on the 200-year old contemporary witness that is under historic preservation. However, a second skin made of Protectosil® ANTIGRAFFITI, which not only
repels creative art, but also rain and dirt, has been much more effective.

Project
The U.S. state of Utah covers an area of 219,887 square kilometers, extending 435
kilometers from east to west and 565 kilometers from north to south. Such an area
needs to be well connected, which is evident by some 4,891,831 kilometers of state
highways.
Protection with Protectosil®
Years of road salt, water, and subsequent freeze-thaw cycles had caused significant
damage to major portions of the highways in the form of potholes, surface chipping
and scaling. After treatment of Protectosil® AQUA-TRETE® 40, roads were reopened
within 24 hours.

Building
The Lotus Temple in the Indian capital of New Delhi is the most recently constructed
of seven Bahá‘í houses of worship worldwide. Its name refers to the lotus flower-like
shape of the building.
Protection with Protectosil®

Protection with Protectosil®
It was only a question of time for the equestrian statue in the inner courtyard of the
Louvre and the sandstone benches carved into the exterior wall to become the canvas

This Memorial covers an area of 19,000 square meters in the center of Berlin.
Together with the underground “Place of Information,” the prominent field of
stelae designed by the U.S. architect Peter Eisenman forms Germany‘s most
important holocaust memorial. Close to half a million people have visited the site
every year since its opening in 2005.
Protection with Protectosil®
The initiative to build the memorial came from local citizens in the late 1980s and the
German Parliament resolved to make it a reality in June 1999. 2,711 concrete stelae
are arranged in a grid pattern on the gently and irregularly sloping terrain. The surfaces of the stelae were treated with Protectosil® ANTIGRAFFITI in 2004 to prevent
any desecration of the memorial.

Protection with Protectosil®
In spite of its location high above the metropolis of Budapest, the Buda Castle is not
immune to the moisture rising up from the Danube valley below. The sandstone structure
was therefore given a coating of Protectosil® WS 630, a water-based protective product
that also repels dirt. Thanks to the application of Protectosil® SC CONCENTRATE on

Protection with Protectosil®
Even mighty constructions such as the Hangzhou Bay Bridge would be fully exposed
to the forces of nature in the long term, were it not for timely protective treatment.
The 7,000 bridge piers firmly embedded in the bottom of the sea, with a height of

Building
Built originally in medieval times, the castle was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th
century and then modernized in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.
Protection with Protectosil®
The ravages of time were taking their toll on the brick structure. Rain directly fell on
the brickwork and was able to penetrate the unprotected bricks and joints. The tower
walls and the world‘s largest collection of the work of artist Joseph Beuys is now
reliably protected against moisture, thanks to Protectosil® BSM 400.

2011 – Darmstadt State Theater
Darmstadt, Hessia, Germany
Building
Darmstadt‘s long theater tradition started in the 17th century, when knightly tournaments and musical theater were part of the courtly ceremonies of the landgraves.
Today, the State Theater in Darmstadt employs over 500 people on and behind the
stage. Every season features approximately forty productions.
Protection with Protectosil®
Since its general overhaul, the theater with its noticeable portal and bright marble
facade highlighted with shiny brass panels has been visible from far away. Protectosil®
ANTIGRAFFITI ends all graffiti vandalism, since the paints do not adhere to the
treated surfaces.

2012 – Wesel City Hall
North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany
Building
The city hall of Wesel on the Rhine was built by its free citizenry in 1455. A resident
group interested in the preservation of the historic city hall initiated the reconstruction
of the facade built with Udelfang sandstone. The building is considered one of the last
examples of late-Gothic Flemish architecture.
Protection with Protectosil®
The facade, renovated partly with donations from residents and companies, needed to
withstand both weather and vandalism. The building was therefore impregnated with
Protectosil® SC CONCENTRATE and given additional protection against graffiti. The
treatment restored the sandstone to its previous luster and function.

New York, USA
Project
Times Square in New York City has developed into such a tourist attraction over the
years that all buildings have to be covered in billboards. This is required by the building
code. The first major electric billboard was installed in 1917.
Protection with Protectosil®
The walkways in the pedestrian zone also are supposed to look good and stay clean
long-term. With Protectosil® BHN PLUS they received a hydrophobic and oleophobic
treatment that effectively repels water, oil, and water-soluble contaminants, giving
graffiti artists no chance.

2014 – Evonik in Johannesburg
Johannesburg, South Africa
Building
Evonik Industries uses the multifunctional building in Johannesburg‘s Midrand as the
basis for its Sub-Sahara Africa Region. The building houses offices and laboratories
of the specialty chemical company‘s various business units on an area of 1,800 square
meters.
Protection with Protectosil®
The climate in Johannesburg is sunny and dry, with strong thunderstorms and rain
showers in the summer months. The resulting dust and dirt leaves traces in the streets
and on house walls. The building has therefore been treated with silicone resin paint
and Protectosil® SC 30 for easy cleaning.
