WELCOME
Rob Stone – National Sales
Manager Welcome
Red ShuttleworthMD’s Welcome
2011 has seen GUD off to a fantastic start – a
new year and our modern, fresh-look packaging
hitting shelves country wide. We felt it was time
that our outside reflected what was inside, Great
Engine Protection!
As the old adage goes, ‘A change is as good as
a holiday.’ The trick however to implementing
effective change is maintaining a balance. At GUD
we have perfected this balance by holding on to
our core values such as quality, a proven warranty
and manufacturing our product locally, yet at the
same time embracing the new and staying ahead of
the game.
Earlier this year we had the opportunity to exhibit
at Automechanika South Africa and hosted our
loyal customers at the official launch of the new
GUD packaging. We received a lot of positive
feedback and the highlight of the event was when
the GUD stand was awarded a bronze in the best
display category.
The year is in full swing with GUD Holdings
financial year end now complete. The Consumer
Protection Act has recently come into play. This
much anticipated CPA is now a reality and has
been welcomed by most reputed suppliers into the
aftermarket. We now have an instrument that is
supported by the law to ensure that unscrupulous
manufacturers are held accountable for poor quality
products and irresponsible practices.
We have always prided ourselves on producing a
product of top quality and in line with that offer a
superb after sales service that has created the brand
equity which GUD enjoys.
This edition is without question the best GUD Times
published and in paging through the draft copy it left
me with a sense of pride to see how much time and
effort our staff spend with you our valued customer
in promoting not only our brand but adding value
to your businesses. Throughout the length and
breadth of our wonderful land we are out there flying
the flag and highlighting the importance of fitting
quality parts to one of the most important assets our
customers possess.
Should you require similar training for your
customers and staff, please make sure you set up
a date and time when next you are visited by your
GUD representative.
GUD also recently celebrated two prestigious
contract OE awards. Toyota SA Motors ‘Supplier
Award for Achievement in Parts & Accessories 2010’
and General Motors ‘Merit Supplier Award in Parts &
Accessories 2010.’
We realise that by listening to our customers and
suppliers, we find ways in which to implement the
right type of change. With that in mind we now have
a dedicated Technical Customer Help Desk to assist
customers with all their filter queries.
Finally, we are all aware of the Consumer Protection
Act which has already come into effect, another
change to embrace and work with from the ground
level up. Read more about it on page 4 of this edition
of the GUD Times.
Thank you for your support and we look forward
hearing from you!

The Consumer Protection Act replaces many laws
currently regulating consumer protection with a single
comprehensive framework for protecting consumer rights
in South Africa. The Act will have a significant impact on the
way business is conducted in South Africa and our industry
will face major challenges.
The Act is designed to promote and protect economic
interest of consumers; provide improved standards of
consumer information; prohibit misleading labelling
and packaging and protect consumers from hazards of
defective products. “We look forward to the implementation
of this legislation as it will see many unscrupulous spares
suppliers having to withdraw from the market due to
their inability to meet the onerous standards – this will
separate the wheat from the chaff and ultimately benefit
the consumer” says Anthony Trickey, GUD Holdings (Pty)
Limited, Divisional Director – Ops Logistics and Legal.
In terms of Section 61, a producer, importer, distributor
or retailer of goods is liable to a consumer on a no-fault
basis for harm, including death, injury, physical damage or
associated economic loss, which was caused by unsafe or
defective goods. Liability is imposed for loss suffered as
a result of defective product irrespective of whether or not
there was negligence on the part of the supplier or not. The
consumer can choose to sue any one party in the supply
chain or all of the parties. This has serious implications for
retailers and service providers such as workshops which
are likely to face claims for damages arising from defective
product.
Companies that interface directly with consumers, such as
workshops and some spares shops, will be most affected
by the Act. Distributors, retailers and workshops need to
take measures to protect themselves and their livelihood.
“Our recommendation is to ensure that goods and services
purchased for onward sale, carry a comprehensive
manufacturer’s warranty,” said Trickey, “GUD filters and
other quality automotive products have warranties in place,
and our customers can rest assured that a valid claim for
defective product will be settled.”
High Quality GUD Z248
2 Stage Element
GUD has had a comprehensive warranty in place for
more than 50 years and has a proven track record for
settling warranty claims. Many imported filters brands
are not backed by a manufacturer’s warranty and if the
local distributor refuses to settle a claim, the retailers
and workshops will bear the brunt of it. In the case where
neither the manufacturer nor supplier has roots in South

if the manufacturer or supplier does not meet its obligations
in terms of the Consumer Protection Act.
The Act also makes provision for an administrative fine that
may not exceed 10% of a company’s turnover or up to
R1 million. In worst cases there could also be consequential
damage in the form of civil damages claims. Every
company, big or small, needs to understand the potential
liability and ensure they are prepared for it.
Section 55 of the Act refers to goods being returned and
refunded; “Within six months after the delivery of any
goods to a consumer, the consumer may return the goods
to the supplier, without penalty and at the supplier’s risk
and expense, if the goods fail to satisfy the requirements
and standards contemplated in section 55, and the supplier
must, at the direction of the consumer, either – (a) repair or
replace the failed, unsafe or defective goods; or (b) refund
to the consumer the price paid by the consumer, for the
goods.”
Section 55 also states that customers have a right to goods
which are in working order and free of any defects, except
in circumstances where customers have been expressly
informed that particular goods were offered in a specific
conditions, and has expressly agreed to accept the goods
in that condition.
Poor Quality Equivalent
Africa, the full burden of a claim will rest with the workshop
or parts distributor. “We are not however painting all
imported products with the same brush,” cautions Trickey,
“there are of course OE parts and reputable imported filters
on the market, that offer full product back up and support.”
The reality is that where this support does not exist, the
cost to a workshop or retail outlet of discovering the
difference could mean the complete closure of his business
The Act requires ethical business practices and total
transparency, which will impact the smaller workshops
who now have to ensure that there is a detailed job card
for every service carried out, and that these align with
quotations and invoices.
In the next few months it will be interesting to see how the
Act is interpreted by business and how it is enforced in the
courts, however we urge you to ensure that you find out
everything you can about the Act now to ensure you have
measures in place to protect yourself.

GUD LAUNCHES FILTER
AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
While the Consumer Protection Act will protect the
interests of the consumer and discourage the use of inferior
products, GUD felt it was imperative to launch its own
awareness campaign.
From January this year GUD
reps have been on a campaign
to create awareness of
substandard filters that are
poorly manufactured and have
misleading information on the
packaging and filter itself.
Varish and Colbert from Top Motor Spares in
Merebank, display their GUD counterstand.
The packaging or filter may say Germany or England but it
does not necessarily mean that you are purchasing a quality
product made in those countries.
GUD also issued a warning regarding filters with no contact
details on the packaging and filter. A reputable manufacturer
will always include contact details on the packaging to allow
a means of recourse in the event of a defective or damaged
product.
Laboratory tests have been conducted on certain imported
filters and comparisons done against the same GUD
product. These tests have shown that GUD premium filters
have a higher filtration area which means longer filtration
life to meet and exceed service intervals. Customers not
only get a quality product but also a product backed by
a comprehensive warranty. Retailers, spares shops and
workshops welcomed GUD’s initiative and were pleased to
be able to display our counter stands and laboratory leaflets.

Autodetox, GUD’S quick oil and filter change workshop programme has grown
significantly over the last year. 2010 / 11 has seen Autodetox evolve and strengthened
with a 60% increase in the number of independent workshops who have benefited from
this scheme. The most recent workshops to join the Autodetox programme are:

All advertising activity has been freshened up to keep it current and dynamic to ensure
that the public are aware of the benefits of changing their filters between service
intervals. The promoter uniforms are now traffic stopping yellow lycra jumpsuits.
The message on the promotional leaflets have been updated and now have a call to
action element. They have an offer of a free boot mat on
presentation of the leaflet when having an Autodetox.
This allows workshop owners to measure the success of
the promotional handout activities. A new radio ad using
the popular comedian Michael Naicker for the voice over
has been a huge hit on Highveld stereo and East Coast
radio. The next round of radio advertising began at the
end of May.
The new magazine advert has appeared in the AA
Traveller magazine and will be in the motoring features
of Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Oprah and House and
Leisure magazine in July. Branding is a strong feature in
the success of the programme and all workshops have
received in your face signage.
However the success of the Autodetox progamme does
not lie with GUD alone, it is essentially a partnership
between GUD and Independent workshops. Every
workshop has a role to play in its success. It is important
to ensure that employees who man the telephones are
educated on what Autodetox is and can turn the lead created

by GUD advertising into a firm booking. To this end
the GUD reps are always willing to train workshop
staff. For maximum effectiveness workshops should
also carry out their own leaflet handouts. GUD upon
request will gladly print additional leaflets to assist
workshops in their promotional efforts. A workshop
who has achieved great success have been doing
just this; All Car Care Centre in Port Elizabeth joined
the Autodetox programme in 2010 and have seen
significant results.
•
“At the onset of our involvement with the GUD
Autodetox concept I realised that this was going to be
a partnership between GUD and All Car Care Centre.
We therefore took the initiative to obtain additional
Autodetox leaflets from GUD and hand them out
ourselves between promotional periods.
The highly successful e-Car workshop network
announced in February this year that they will be
joining the Autodetox programme. This is a huge
boost to Autodetox, customers will now have an
additional 60 workshops all over the country who offer
this service.
The results speak for themselves, I have had a
total of 26 Autodetox services since we came on
board 3 months ago. For Autodetox to be effective
I firmly believe that workshops need to get involved
themselves and play their part. The Autodetox
programme with the advertising provided by GUD
has been an asset to my business.” Heinrich de Vos,
loyal GUD Customer and All Car Care Centre owner –
Port Elizabeth. Workshops can use the following tips
to drive the success of Autodetox even further:
Autodetox rolled out initially to Gauteng based e-Car
workshops on 7 May followed by the KwaZulu Natal
and the rest on the country on a staggered basis.
The Autodetox concept has been adapted to suit the
particular needs of the e-Car workshops. Attractive
A1 posters, mirror hangers, washline banners as well
as sandwich boards are available to the e-Cars. The
e-Car workshops will also benefit from a variety of
Autodetox advertising such as the website.
•
All staff members must be aware and well
informed about the programme and its benefits
to customers.
Heinrich de Vos and his team at All Car Care Centre

Price lists must be readily available when
telephone and general enquiries are made
regarding Autodetox.
Autodetox promotions should be run in
conjunction with workshop promotions.
Workshop owners should contact their GUD rep
for additional Autodetox promotional signage and
brochures when needed.
AUTODETOX IS GETTING EVEN BIGGER
2010 / 11 is proving
to be an exciting
year as far as the
growth of AutoDetox

The Partinform Road Show resumed in August after

Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal where our experienced GUD

The Polokwane leg of Partinform took place in September

Polokwane Partinform visitors were particularly interested in
finding out more information about the GUD warranty as the
new Consumer Protection Act was of great concern to them.
The event attracted over 150 eager and inquisitive
attendees on a very cold evening. It afforded the GUD

GUD IS BIG
IN ZIMBABWE
GUD recently held the grand opening of our new
Zimbabwe warehouse and sales office. Wonder
Mutsokoti, Managing Director of the Zimbabwe
operation as well as GUD executives hosted
prominent distributors and wholesalers for the
launch event on 5 August.
GUD saw the opportunities
that the Zimbabwe market
presented and renovated
its premises to include a
warehouse that increased
stock holding ability by over
200% – it is now large enough
to hold 700 SKUs and carry
the full range of GUD filters.
GUD Holdings, Barry Elliott and Wonder Mutsokoti, MD of
the Zimbabwean operation, prepare to inaugurate the new
warehouse and sales office by cutting the ribbon.
This has enabled GUD to meet the growing demand in
Zimbabwe more timeously as stocks can now be pulled
from the new warehouse instead of waiting for our filters
to be sent from South Africa.
“A big thank you goes out to all our loyal distributors
in Zimbabwe. We really appreciate your support and
have been overwhelmed by the growth in demand for
our brand,” said Tracey Usswald, GUD Export Manager.
She and her team are poised for further opportunities to
grow our Zimbabwean and African Markets.

who manufacture filters for recognised European brands
and export them throughout Europe and United Kingdom. It
was a great opportunity for Red Shuttleworth, Ian Law and
Tracey Usswald who attended Automechanika Frankfurt to
network and engage with our European customers.

new representatives from influential customers and build

to the students of Zenzele Junior Primary. The publishing
giant also generously offered to train the educators at the
