As you read through this issue of GUD Times you will notice how GUD have invested in a new wrap filter assembly line to ensure that we keep up to date with international vehicle trends and meet the demands of the ever changing car park. We have also invested in filling the range gap to ensure that GUD is supplying filters to fit over 92% of the vehicles on South African roads. What is more exciting for us however, has been our renewed focus on Corporate Social Responsibility. GUD has always had a social conscience and this year we made it a priority with a R900 000 donation to 30 Christel House learners, who through social disadvantages would never be able to afford a good education, were it not for companies such as ourselves who give them a helping hand. GUD is expanding into the African continent and have put together a strong team to lead our growth into this market. In September we launched in Kenya and we will soon announce plans for the rest of Africa. I'd like to thank all our loyal customers for your support during 2011. We will be taking the lessons learned from 2011 forward to ensure that both you and GUD enjoy a successful year ahead. We are commencing the year with an exciting workshop promotion that will allow our customers to win a fishing trip to Durban which will include a GUD factory tour and a visit to our soon-to-be completed visitors centre. There has been a huge demand from our customers for factory tours and we are always happy to host you, as we fully understand the huge benefit derived from seeing firsthand how filters are manufactured. As you will see in this edition of GUD Times we have revamped our state-of-the-art laboratory, a sought-after stopover during a factory tour. Speak to your GUD sale representative to arrange a tour for yourself and your team. We look forward to welcoming you to the GUD family. Rob Stone We expect 2012 to be even more exciting than last year and are glad to have you on board for this exciting journey. With that in mind GUD have updated the signage at all our branches in South Africa. The bold signage sets GUD apart while proudly displaying our corporate colours. GUD TIMES • 4 GUD vs DUD Our campaign to highlight the important differences between good quality and poor quality filters in our market received a boost when the Advertising Standards Authority’s Tribunal ruled in favour of GUD following a complaint regarding our GUD vs DUD campaign. The Tribunal found that “The emphasis of the advertisement is on the features of GUD Filters that make it a quality product...” and that “The emphasis of the advertisement is on the merits of the GUD product as compared to weaknesses in inferior products.” The tribunal further found that the complainant did “not dispute that the GUD Filter products are a quality product...” In the circumstance the Advertising Industry Tribunal ruled that the advert did not breach the Code of Advertising practice. A full copy of the ruling is available at www.asasa.org.za/ RecentRulings.aspx GUD TIMES • 5 LATEST NEWS State-of-the-art GUD Lab is overhauled GUD is the only filter manufacturer in South Africa to have a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to quality assurance. During the past three months the GUD laboratory has undergone a revamp in line with international standards, incorporating good housekeeping, health, safety and environmental aspects. We have four laboratories that are used to conduct various tests – these are air, oil, fuel and chemical laboratories. The purpose of the revamp was to renovate the facility and upgrade the infrastructure. One of the major aspects of the revamp was the construction of two new fume rooms where raw materials are tested to ensure that they are resistant to the various fluids (oil and fuel) and able to withstand heating to temperatures that will be experienced when filters are fitted to vehicles. These rooms have been designed to ensure that the raw materials are tested to the highest standards whilst maintaining the safety of employees. Our quality system is regularly assessed by the South African Bureau of Standards and the International Organisation of Standards. GUD’s quality system, products and processes are audited regularly by OEMs to ensure their specific requirements are met. The GUD laboratory also plays an instrumental role in the research and development of new products. GUD customers are always assured of Great Engine Protection when fitting a GUD Filter. Our comprehensive warranty that has been in place for 50 years attests to our confidence in our filters! New equipment such as an air permeability tester and tensometer has also been added to the laboratory. The air permeability tester is designed to measure the air flow through the media, test and analyse new types of media, and ensures that the media used in our filters is of a very high standard. The tensometer is highly sophisticated equipment that is computer controlled for testing the tensile strength and elongation of rubbers, polyurethane and adhesive as well as the compression loads on springs. These springs are used in valves and to support the element of spin-on filters. GUD’s highly qualified laboratory technicians also perform intensive tests such as anti-drain back valve testing on oil filters, a bubble test used to determin if there are any leaks in the filters, paper physicals tests, flow restriction tests etc. Random quality testing is also performed by testing filters straight off the production line, ensuring that all filters are manufactured according to the highest specifications and quality standards. All laboratory machines and equipment are cleaned, re-calibrated and tested regularly. The various labs now also boast new signage inspired by the retro design of the new GUD packaging and posters of the extensive GUD product range. GUD Laboratory GUD TIMES • 6 GUD promotes Inono in the workplace GUD is committed to the highest quality standards of manufacture in order for all our products to exceed OEM requirements. With a world class laboratory that conducts intensive testing on our filters and the strictest adherence to the ISO health and safety standards, customers are assured of great engine protection. This motivated GUD to launch the Inono initiative recently. Inono is a quality assessment programme aimed at all departments and sites to ensure the continual achievement of the highest standards of housekeeping. Inono means a culture of tidiness. GUD encourages the leaders in our business to guide employees so everyone exhibits tidiness. Therefore GUD have provided Inono banners in English and Zulu that are displayed throughout the factories and warehouses informing and motivating staff about the programme. The Inono programme utilises a five star plan that is implemented through five categories, namely: Facility, equipment, orderliness, safety/visual control and sustainability. Facility – covers the housekeeping of the entire work area. Equipment – is the cleanliness of the machinery in each work area. Orderliness – a place for everything and everything in its place. Safety/Visual Control – information signs in place. Sustainability – to maintain the standard with a weekly checklist. The Cross-Function team led by Rodney Naude, General Manager of the GUD Pietermaritzburg site, conducts pre-inspections at all departments and advises which areas require improvement. The departments are then given three months to rectify all problem areas as identified by the pre-inspection. After the allocated time, another inspection will be conducted. When the Inono standard is achieved five stars are awarded. The Panel Air filter department at the Prospecton factory proudly boasts their five star banner as the first to achieve five stars since the initiation of the programme. The rest of the GUD factories and warehouses are however fast following in their footsteps. Weekly checks are performed to ensure that the high standards of housekeeping are being maintained. An added incentive for Inono members is the Gold Circle Award; the award is given to the department that assists another department in getting their five stars. This principle of the Gold Circle Award is that Team Inono helps you to achieve five stars and encourages you to help another department to do the same. The Inono initiative is changing the way GUD staff view their areas and each other. We endeavor to have all GUD areas flying their five star banners high as quality people, plus clean areas equals quality filters for all GUD customers. Inono banners are prominently displayed at all GUD sites to inform and motivate staff about the programme The Cross Function Team that conducts the Inono audits GUD TIMES • 7 LATEST NEWS GUD is committed to adding value to the lives of our customers and have recently introduced an innovative communication tool called the D6 Communicator. GUD is the only automotive company in South Africa utilising this advanced technology which allows us to stay in touch with our customers and provide high levels of customer service. GUD launched the D6 Communicator in September 2011 and have more than 300 registered users, with the numbers growing daily. The D6 communicator can be compared to a ‘mini website’ that pops up onto customers’ computer screens when a news item is uploaded. All you have to do is download the programme software onto your laptop or PC by following step-by-step instructions. You however need to have a connection to the internet for updates and detailed stories. The communicator is designed to provide our customers with instant information regarding various developments at GUD, such as product updates, price changes, promotions, news and technical advice. A mobi-site is also available for workshops or spares shops that do not have an internet connection, allowing them to access all the GUD news through their cell phones. GUD posters MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE! Please contact your GUD rep for them to explain the concept face-to-face and assist with loading the communicator. Filters has recently invested over R3 000 000 in a new “wrap” filter element assembly line. The technology is able to produce an element with significantly more surface area, therefore increasing the life of the filter. These filters have distinctly different looking media assemblies to the conventional star-shaped media filters, with the media being is wrapped around a central core. The line consists of a winding machine, hot melt extruder, epoxy dispenser and infra-red curing oven. The line will be commissioned later this year and will be capable of producing multiport, spin-on and cartridge type filters. This project will involve the introduction of six new wrap or crépe-rolled filters. The highest volume filter is expected to be the cartridge wrap filter for Toyota models. All ten-point safety checks are conducted thoroughly at F1 Quick Brake and Lube and, should the mechanic discover any additional problems, the customer is advised immediately. It is all about the little things and Glen believes that a customer who drives in with a squeaky car door expects to drive away with a door that closes smoothly. This small amount of effort on the part of the workshop guarantees a happy customer that will return in future. F1 Quick Brake and Lube specialise in exactly what their name promises – quick oil and brake changes for customers who require rapid turnaround times. When Glen heard about GUD AutoDetox he knew that it would suit his current business strategy to a tee. He signed-up and in order to guarantee the one-hour service time, hired extra workshop space with two dedicated bays especially for his AutoDetox customers. F1 Quick Brake and Lube is the perfect example of a workshop that has taken GUD AutoDetox to the next level. Customers who are regularly bringing their vehicles in for an AutoDetox between service intervals will attest to the benefits – a reliable, more powerful engine that runs smoothly and won’t let them down when they need it most! Upon speaking to Glen, his passion for GUD AutoDetox and his customers is clear – ‘It is essential to educate motorists about the benefits of regularly changing their oil and oil filter between service intervals.’ Glen also points out, ‘If your spark plugs go, the damage to your vehicle may be minimal, but if the oil filter goes you are in some serious trouble.’ Contact F1 Quick Brake and Lube on 011 609 2846 or visit www.gudautodetox.co.za to find an AutoDetox workshop near you. Should you wish to become a GUD AutoDetox outlet, email [email protected] and we will be in touch! The roll-out process has been completed on a national level and the response has been extremely positive from workshops and customers alike. When signing-up to Autodetox, e-CAR workshops received a number of marketing elements which included a sandwich board, A1 posters, bunting and mirror hangers. GUD and e-CAR boosted the new partnership with newspaper and radio advertising to further educate motorists on the benefits of Autodetox and drive motorists to their workshops. e-CAR workshops are now also listed on the Autodetox website. Taking the next step The success of any venture is reliant on the knowledge and understanding of those interacting with potential customers. While GUD’s extensive PR campaign drives prospective business to e-CAR’s door, it is up to staff liaising directly with the customer to close the deal and book the appointment. To further assist workshops, GUD, in conjunction with e-CAR, ran a ‘Mystery Caller’ competition for e-CAR workshops from 1 November 2011 to test their knowledge of Autodetox. Leaflets with helpful hints explaining how to market the Autodetox concept best were sent to all e-CAR workshops. A GUD representative contacted these workshops posing as a would-be customer. If the staff member who answered the phone, correctly promoted Autodetox, he or she instantly won a GUD cooler bag and gained entry into a lucky draw where one of five R500 shopping vouchers was up for grabs.
