what is up with wonka? - Open Door Rehabilitation Center
The Voice Open Door Rehabilitation Center Serving Adults with Developmental Disabilities January - February 2014 WHAT IS UP WITH WONKA? As hopefully everyone knows, the Open Door Players have been working their best on moving forward on the movie. Just about every week, someone has been able to yell, “That’s a take,” but we have a lot more to go. Did you know that there are 56 scenes in the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?” So far, the green screen has been a lot of fun, and it has been a lesson in faith in the movie making process. Kim F. says that “It is strange. We say our lines, but we have no clue what it looks like until everything is edited.” Due to the schedules of our actors, some scenes are shot with only one person and others are being added into the scene when they are available. Kim A., who played Maria in the Open Door’s version of “The Sound of Music,” is no novice to acting. Kim wanted to take part in “Wonka” and has landed the part of Charlie’s mom. The problem is that Kim’s schedule does not easily mesh with that of everyone else’s so the solution is for us to film her separately and then add her in. Kim comments, “This is a great way that I can be in the film, and it makes me very happy that we can find a way. I am going to Vern can’t wait to see himself be surprised to see how when the movie is done! this all works together.” Another actor who was surprised by how his scene came out is Vern R. “I just sat by myself and said my lines and then next thing I know, I’m in a hallway with Kyle.” Speaking of Adam P., he is another actor who is learning about the green screen. “I was not sure how this would work. I just said my lines in front of the green screen then I saw that I was in a class with students and a chalkboard.” The plan is to use these scenes as building blocks We kind of blew up Adam! to filming the inside of Wonka’s factory. Karen L. is anxious that “It has to look like Wonka’s.” Rod I., on the other hand, is looking forward and making plans. “I have big ideas for the next movie. I want something with magic.” One scene at a time, Rod! We will get there, but first everyone has to find their golden tickets! Kyle rocked his scene! Out with the old and in with new.... Auld Lang Syne, promises we make, things we want to change or improve. Some make resolutions, some don’t. Some keep them and some don’t. Funny joke I saw about New Year’s Resolutions: I am going to open a gym and call it “Resolutions.” It’s a gym for one month then turns into a restaurant for the next eleven months. All kidding aside, though, time for reflection and wanting or making the effort to make change is in itself a good thing. I thought it would be nice to find out what our newest Open Door residents had planned for their New Year’s Resolutions. Evelyn S.: “I want to have my friends come to my house and visit me. I also want to have a birthday party with everyone at my new house because I will be 71!” Founders of ODRC William & Virginia Squier, Sr. David & Juanita Graf President Emeritus Robert J. Coleman, D.C. Danielle B.: “I am looking towards my birthday and what presents I will get. I want to learn how to do latch hook!” Michelle B.: “I want to have a good time! More activities and snacks!” Executive Director David Baker Board of Directors Volunteer Leadership Rod I.: “I want to exercise more and gain weight.” (This is not a typo folks, yes, GAIN weight) President Lane Kapela Vice President Dick Banning Jim K.: “I want to work more and make my own workbooks at home so I see how much I worked.” Secretary Denise Mestemaker Treasurer Mike Bennett Quendred Carpenter Joe Klinger Eric Danielson Becky Lueken Jim Dirst Claudette McCaslin Jim Dockendorf Jeff Metzger, Sr. Robin Goldsmith Phyllis Niles Bryan Harbin Michael O’ Flynn Steven S: “I am going to be good and behave. I want to go to church more.” Our consumers are looking forward to the New Year. The resolutions don’t sound to far off from most of our own... have more fun, learn something new, be more diligent, exercise more. It’s really all relative. We will see how everyone does. I, for one, chose not to make one this year... but who knows, I may change my mind. To all our supporters, families, consumers, and friends: Here’s to a happy, healthy New Year!! I WISH THAT I COULD WRAP UP CHRISTMAS I wish that I could wrap up all the love and Holiday cheer, That comes along with Christmas and with New Year’s every year, Pack it in a pretty box and put it on my shelf, And pull it down again each year and give it to myself. I wish that I could tie up all my favorite carols with twine, Wind around some ribbon, too, and for twelve months call them mine, Until the next Yuletide came when the sounds again could be unfurled, And untie every single one then give them to the world. Kyle H., Evelyn S., Minnie E., and Angie H. proudly show the Christmas spirit At the Timber Creek Inn and Suites Open Door clients participated in the 4th annual Festival of Trees sponsored by the Sandwich Park District! Community businesses and organizations were invited to decorate a tree. All the trees were displayed in the lobby of The Timber Creek Inn and Suites. With this being a very special year for us at Open Door, the theme was pretty easy to come up with. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary…Wow! The clients decided to take photos of themselves and make an ornament of the year they joined the Open Door Family. With Christmas music playing in the background, they happily assembled each ornament with care. Once the assembly was completed, the group headed out to set the tree up. Tree, lights, garland, ornaments and the 50th anniversary star….complete! The Open Door tree joined dozens and dozens of other beautiful trees in the Lobby of Timber Creek Inn and Suites. The weekend included a craft show and free entertainment for all! It was so much fun, we will definitely be back next year!! Deck the Halls Cindy C. & Linda G. Smile! They are going to make an ornament out of us! Our Message Rod I. and Jim K. have joined our family! Mark G. & Susan E. The year we joined the Open Door Family THANK YOU FOR CELEBRATING OPEN DOOR’S 50th ANNIVERSARY WITH US! It has been a rewarding, and at sometimes a challenging, 50 years! We have been blessed to have your support throughout all of these years. Robin Goldsmith, daughter to William and Virginia Squier, Sr., and sister to Bill, states, “My mother said it could only have happened among the good people of Sandwich, who cared so much even when their own children were not involved.” Dave Baker remarks, “That is so typical of all of the communities who support us.” We regret we could not recognize all of our consumers and each and every one of you in this past year’s newsletter issues. There are so many whom we would like to recognize and humbly thank. We hope you enjoy our final issue celebrating our 50th anniversary. You will see some photos without dates and/or names, yet we thought you would enjoy taking a stroll down memory lane. L TO R: Dave Graf, Bill Squier, Sr., Juanita Graf, and Cindy Graf (1993).
