The Society has been trying for some time now to solidify our membership base and improve the
benefits that we provide to our members, which also would be of interest to potential new members. I am fortunate to have two young engineers in my office who joined ASPE and who are now
interested in starting an ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) group within the Cleveland Chapter. I am
always trying to impress upon our staff the importance of belonging to and participating in professional organizations, so I asked them about their initial impressions of ASPE in the early stages of
their memberships. Following are their answers, and I thought it was important to share them with
you because I was glad to hear that what we have been doing to improve the Society is working and
is valuable to them as new members. Hopefully other Chapters are having similar experiences.
Marlon Wright, P.Eng, a Mechanical Engineer at Westlake Reed Leskosky, recommends that every
young engineer who is new to the plumbing engineering field consider joining ASPE to learn about
the best practices for plumbing design. “Membership also allows you the opportunity to make new
connections with other professionals in the industry. I have already put my membership to use in
my plumbing designs by taking advantage of the ASPE design handbooks and applying this information on my projects. I have also increased my knowledge in the plumbing design field by reading
the ASPE Journal, which is only available to ASPE members. This journal features articles written
by ASPE professionals who are experts in their fields and are written in a manner that is easy for
any designer or engineer to understand. I also just downloaded the ASPE Tables App, which gives
me access to pipe sizing tables, charts, and graphs for when I am in the field. I think this app is a
great tool to use while on a construction site working with the installation professionals. There is
no longer a need for them to wait for me to return back to the office to access my computer and send
them an email hours later when we can now easily find a solution while I am on the jobsite. I wish I
would have joined ASPE sooner in my career so I could have been taking advantage of the great and
valuable resources that ASPE offers.”
Coral Pais, another Mechanical Engineer at my firm, stated, “As a young engineer, connecting
with ASPE members on the local and national levels has introduced me to a wealth of knowledge
and expertise beyond my working environment. I appreciated how welcoming my local Chapter
was of young engineers, and now I look forward to the interactions with my colleagues and local
allies at monthly meetings. We need each other to grow professionally and make great strides in
our industry, and an organization like ASPE gives you the platform to make those goals more easily
achievable.”
I believe this Society is making a difference based on the testimonials of a few new members,
and we will continue to improve the benefits of membership and strengthen the importance of this
organization while not losing sight of our long-term members as well. They are the ones who have
kept this Society rock solid over the years, and we will make every effort to make sure that they too
continue to find membership worth the investment. I would like to thank our long-term members,
who I consider our goodwill ambassadors, because without their leadership, guidance, and will-

ingness to spread the word about our Society and the benefits of
membership, we would not be able to achieve our goals and be as
relevant as we are to the plumbing engineering community.
It is that time of year again for the ASPE Finance Committee to
start hammering out a new draft budget for the upcoming year.
The Committee will be meeting in Chicago this month to review
the past and look for ways to refine our financial position while
keeping an eye on growth for the coming years. This is only the
first step in the process of finalizing the budget, but the committee did a great job last year and I am confident that they will do
another great job this year. Once the draft budget has been prepared, it will then be presented to the Board of Directors in January for their review and comment. The budget then will go through
numerous revisions based on the comments we receive along with
the staff’s input until it is finalized and presented to the Board in
April for approval.
It is also that time of year to remind you that we are now accepting applications for the Alfred Steele Engineering Scholarship.
If you do not know the history, Alfred Steele, PE, was a long-time
member of ASPE who was a visionary and pioneer in advocating
education and professional development for plumbing engineers
and designers, and this scholarship was named in his honor.
On behalf of the Society Board of Directors, I would like to wish
you and your family a joyous and relaxing holiday season as we
close out 2015 and look forward to a prosperous and peaceful New
Year!
Steele Scholarship Applications Are
Due January 31
ASPE’s Alfred Steele Scholarship awards up to $3,000 per year to
qualified applicants. The scholarship is limited to ASPE members
and their immediate family members (i.e., spouses and children)

Thoughts About the Holidays
Hello to all during this fabulous time of year. When this column is
before you for reading, Thanksgiving will have passed, and each
of us is now moving toward the remainder of the holiday season,
which may include Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other
holiday you respectively celebrate. Thus, I would like to use this
month’s column to change our focus from the everyday hustle and
bustle of the “industry life.”
For each of us, each day should be considered special in its own
right or place. However, during the holidays things just seem to
be a little more focused if we are maintaining a proper balance of
importance.
The most important thing is to make sure that each of us is
spending quality time with family and friends during all of the
special events and/or times of the year that provide these opportunities. Making lifelong memories with each other and family can be
brought about in many different ways.
In seeking those lifelong memories, please remember that no
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or other holiday celebration is
perfect. Some of the best memories can come from when we view
inevitable missteps as opportunities to demonstrate flexibility
and resilience to others. A lopsided tree, a non-flaky pie crust, or
a burned brisket won’t ruin your holiday; rather, it will create a
family memory. At the top of your holiday wish list, make sure that
love and laughter are first. At times, the barrage of holiday advertising can make you forget what the holiday season is really about.
In remembering what is important, we should scale back and
remind ourselves that what makes a great celebration is loved ones,
not store-bought presents, elaborate decorations, or gourmet food.
Another great area to focus on during the holidays is the opportunity to volunteer in any way possible to help the many who
are less fortunate. With the fact that our Society is a volunteer
organization, the importance of volunteering should ring loudly in
our respective ears or shine brightly in our eyes if we just listen or
look around us for opportunities to share with others. With this in
mind, the Society Board of Directors is reviewing charitable volunteer opportunities to assist those in need.
Also, while enjoying the holidays through the remainder of the
year, another critical focus point that we all should consider is to
take time for yourself.
Many times you may feel pressured to be everything to everyone.
Remember that you’re only one person and can only accomplish
certain things. Sometimes self-care is the best thing you can do—
others will benefit when you’re stress-free. Go for a long walk, get
a massage, or take time out to listen to your favorite music or read
a new book. All of us need some time to recharge our batteries; by
slowing down you will actually have more energy to accomplish
your goals. Okay, I will admit that I need to take some of my own
guidance and direction here. I am my own worst enemy when it
comes to taking time to recharge effectively. That will be one of my
New Year’s resolutions.
Speaking of goals, I hope that each of you will be finishing 2015
successfully, having productively managed to accomplish the items
set for the year. Hopefully we can all appropriately plan our goals
for 2016 in a way that they are not just measurable, but also attainable.
In closing, I hope each of you plans to enjoy some relaxing
time with family and friends over the holiday season. Thanks to
everyone for your respective efforts within our industry and the
advancement of our mission relative to the health and safety of the
public. ENJOY!
