Doing good in the neighborhood (and beyond!)
Each year, our club donates time and $$ to organizations both in our
community and outside of it, even as far away as Mexico. Some of the
beneficiaries of our gifts have been H.A.N.K., Inc. (Helping Abused & Neglected Kids), which has opened its first of at least 7 foster homes planned
for the county, and provided Christmas gifts & school supplies for local
kids in CPS custody, as well as other needs as they arose; we’ve donated
books to Hondo Public Library’s Library’s “100 books everyone should
read”; serve shot dogs and otherwise engages with the participants of the
HPL’s Summer Reading Program at their end of program pool party; Medina County Relay for Life (benefits American Cancer Society); Old Iron
Trail Ride (Benefits local Make-A-Wish recipients); Meals-On-Wheels;
Angels Crossing; Medina Healthcare Fund; arranged for medical supplies
to be transported to an eye clinic and burn center for indigent patients in
Aguascalientes, Mexico; our annual Christmas project “Share the Joy”
and more.
We also have taken on the task of maintaining the beauty of God’s
Country by performing trash pickup periodically throughout the year along
US 90.

Highlights from May 5, 2016 meeting
Attendance: 16 Rotarians including soon-to-be inducted Joe Ramos, guests
were Maria Wallace from Cecil Atkission Ford and Claudia Mora, Airport Director
for the City of Castroville.
Jannie Bryant called the meeting to order. Shee announced that John Martinez
has a birthday this month. Jannie, Jim and Chris attended the District Conference
in Eagle Pass. They gave 11 presentations on behalf of our club. They stated that
clubs were very interested in our projects. Jim stayed to light a candle for Ann
Peden. Everyone thanked Lonnie for the wonderful service he did for Ann. Diane
spoke about the first female graduating class of the Medina County Christian Job
Corps. They are planning on having another one in the fall. Castroville and Devine
are interested in have classes as well.
Rotary moment was presented by Diane Cosgrove. She spoke about RYLA which
is leadership training for youth. It began in Queensbury, Australia, and focuses on
social, cultural and leadership training. It was adopted in 1971 as an official part of
Rotary. We send at least 4 students every year; this year we sent 8!
Diane also introduced our speaker, Bart Chevereaux, the District Production Manager and Yvonne Caruso, Office Manager, for Martin Marietta. He stated that Martin
Marietta purchased Redland Stone in 1999. In 2006-07 production slowed down.
In 2000, they began looking for property for a new quarry in this area, buying all the
property to run their rail line. In 2010, MM purchased Medina Crushed Stone which
included three quarries in Medina County. Medina Rock & Rail, which is the facility
located between Hondo and D’Hanis, is MM’s biggest capital expenditure at a cost
of $200 million for the facility alone. It has been up and running for approximately
4 months now. About half of their employees are from this area, with the other half
from San Antonio. This facility benefits both Hondo & D’Hanis communitiesas they
spend money here as much as possible and try to do business locally as much
as possible. Some of the upcoming projects MM have been awarded include the
Harbor Bridge, Schineer-which exports natural gas, and a pipe plant, all in Corpus
Christi. They will be utilizing approximately 3 million tons of aggregate which accounts for about 3 months of production. They also have the contract for the brickette factory in Alpine. They have secured the contract for I-69 in Houston which will
require ½ million tons of aggregate and I-290 which will need 300 tons of aggregate.
They employ about 50 people at Hondo Rock & Rail, with salaries beginning at
$40-50,000 per employee per year. Their employees can start at the bottom and
work their way up. Hondo R&R produces aggregate and sand. They improved CR
421 and there will be no exporting of aggregate by truck, as all materials will be
transported by rail – an estimated 2-3 trainloads a day which is equivalent to 1200
truck loads.
Bart drew the winning ticket belonging to Pam Lutz, but sorry (yeah, right!) no winner in the drawing for the Joker, so the pot continues to grow!! Buy your tickets to
support our RYLA program for 2017 – you could be the next BIG winner!!
