A Message from our Leadership
It is our privilege to serve as the Executive Leadership of your Pinellas County HCA Hospitals and to have this
opportunity to share with you the partnerships our hospitals provide to the community. Your HCA Pinellas County
hospitals, including Edward White Hospital, Largo Medical Center, Northside Hospital and St. Petersburg General
Hospital have a significant impact on Pinellas County, providing more than 3,680 people with employment
and more than $15.6 million in taxes. We are proud to have more than a thousand of the area’s most respected
physicians on our medical staffs.
We treated more than 117,000 patients in our emergency departments, where outstanding efforts by our teams
continue to improve quality and operations. Our hospitals’ average ER wait times are posted live on our websites.
We also invite residents to text message “ER” to 23000 and respond with a local zip code to receive the HCA Pinellas
County hospital average emergency room wait times. While the ER volumes are growing, so is the number of
patients without adequate health insurance or the financial resources to pay for this care. We continue to treat a
large percentage of uninsured patients in the communities we serve.
Providing high quality care remains at the core of our mission, and we were honored to have Edward White
Hospital and Largo Medical Center named in 2011 as 2010 Top Performers for Key Quality Measures by The Joint
Commission. They joined an elite group of 405 hospitals nationwide which are industry leaders in using evidencebased care processes that are closely linked to positive patient outcomes.
Northside Hospital was the first West Florida Division facility to earn state designation as a Comprehensive Stroke
Center. The hospital provides the latest advanced technology and neuroradiology services for stroke patients.
St. Petersburg General Hospital became an accredited community cancer program by the American College of
Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (ACOS CoC).
Good patient care requires having the right information at the right time and we continue to support our physicians
by providing them secure access to electronic health information, fetal monitors and heart rhythms on their smart
phones and other hand held devises. We are investing heavily in information technology to provide quicker and
easier access to health information. At the same time, we are ensuring that we are in compliance with Meaningful
Use (MU) criteria as we add new features to our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, hCare, and work with other
health care systems and providers in the communities we serve.
Our hospitals have done an outstanding job focusing on quality and operations, with all HCA Pinellas County
hospitals receiving many national and state clinical outcome and achievement recognitions. Our goal is to continue
to provide quality care to our community while performing at a high standard of excellence.

Countless hours of volunteering were performed by members of the HCA Pinellas County
Hospital family last year. From providing medical care on mission trips to serving as the
voice for children through programs such as Guardian Ad Litem and Autism advocacy,
our staff, volunteers and physicians give back to our communities, both in and outside of
our facilities.
H u r r i c a ne P r e pa r e d ne s s
HCA Hospitals of Pinellas County have a comprehensive hurricane preparedness plan
to ensure that our patients and the staff who care for them are safe during a storm. Our
hospitals have arrangements in place with vendors from around the state and nation to
provide support, from on-site security if needed to medical supplies, additional generators,
food, fuel, emergency transportation, building supplies and construction crews who can
be dispatched immediately to make needed repairs to keep our hospitals operational.
Several days worth of food and supplies all arrive at each facility well in advance of a storm,
to ensure the hospital is self-sustaining. Transfer processes and plans are in place with our
network of hospitals from around the country, should patients need to be relocated.

Quality & Patient Safety
“Putting Patients First” is the foundation of our culture and passion for quality health care. Many of the initiatives we implement
serve as national models for the industry today. The HCA West Florida hospitals have achieved industry leading performance on
public Clinical Measures, such as the CMS Core Measures for Congestive Heart Failure, Pneumonia, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and
Surgical Care Improvement Project. Our hospitals are thoroughly engaged in programs and initiatives which promote and optimize
Patient Satisfaction, Clinical Efficiency programs and Quality outcomes.
A I M f or Z e r o
AIM for Zero is an example of HCA’s commitment to providing excellence in healthcare through the consistent application of
evidence-based interventions in the elimination of Central Line-Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLA-BSI). HCA’s goal for this
initiative is zero, as we know from the medical literature that these infections are increasingly proven to be avoidable.
The letter “A” in AIM stands for antimicrobial stewardship which embraces the effective and efficient utilization of antibiotics.
Overuse of broad spectrum antibiotics is not only needlessly expensive, but it breeds resistant infections. The letter “I” refers to a
checklist of interventions that has been demonstrated as preventing CLA-BSI at the point of Insertion. “M” stands for vigilance in
maintaining and removing central lines at the earliest appropriate moment.
Culture is critical to high performance health care. AIM for Zero includes behavioral expectations that encourage any team member
to “speak up” to assure that the required interventions are followed. The personal behavior choices caregivers make each day affect
their ability to protect patients from preventable, and potentially life-threatening, infections. Through exemplary leadership and
support, HCA is committed to offering the premier performance patients expect and deserve.
Br oselow System for Acute Pediatric Administr ation
of Drugs in the ER
All of our hospital emergency departments have installed the Broselow System to ensure the proper dosing and administration of drugs
to children. Pediatric dosing can be difficult, especially in emergency situations, and the Broselow System allows medical professionals
to instantly access proper dosing, improve the speed and accuracy in acute preparation and administration of drugs, reduce medical
errors and standardizes pediatric dosing so that we can provide our young patients with high quality emergency care, safely.
E l e c t r oni c B a r C od in g M e d i c at i on S y s t e m ( B C M A )
HCA led a national effort to reduce medication errors by placing this system in all of our hospitals several years ago. Bar codes on
medications are scanned at the patient’s bedside, providing our clinical staff with an effective tool to ensure that the right patient
receives the right medication at the right time through the right route.
E l e c t r oni c B a r C od in g Tr a n sf u si on S y s t e m ( B C TA )
We expanded bar coding for transfusion products in all of our hospitals as a result of the medication safety successes. Prior to administering
any blood product, the unit is scanned to ensure the patient is receiving the right transfusion product at the right time through the right route.
h C a r e E l e c t r oni c H e a lt h R e c or d ( E H R )
The West Florida Division has invested heavily in its Electronic Health Record (EHR) initiative for many years. With EHR, access to patient
health information is simplified and patient safety and quality improved. Our hospitals have brought numerous clinical components for
the EHR on-line through major investments in technology. As of March 2010, physicians are able to document and enter patient orders
on-line and remotely from their offices. This streamlines the ordering process and ensures accurate and timely approach to patient care.
As more physician practices use Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, there is an increased need to integrate data from a variety of
clinical systems, including hospital systems. Linking physician practices to our hospital databases is being rolled out through the hCare
Hub interface. This allows physician offices real-time access to patient clinical data from the hospital. Effective clinical data exchange can
provide necessary information to physicians to make timely decisions and reduce duplicate testing and unnecessary hospitalizations.
6 Quality & Patient Safety
HCA West Florida – Pinellas County
M e d i c a l E d u c at i on
We’re also bringing future physicians to our communities through medical training programs. The Graduate Medical Education
program of Largo Medical Center is the third largest osteopathic teaching program in the South and has been designated as a
Statutory Teaching Hospital by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). There are twelve residency programs (a
thirteenth will begin in 2012) and more than 118 residents in the program this current academic year at Largo Medical Center. Both
St. Petersburg General Hospital and Northside Hospital also provide Traditional Rotating Internship, with St. Petersburg General
offering a Family Practice Residency and Northside offering an Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship.
M e d i c a l R e se a r c h
Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI) of Nashville, one of the largest global clinical research programs, has signed an agreement
with The Tampa Bay Heart Institute at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, as a cardiovascular clinical research strategic site.
SCRI’s rapidly expanding cardiovascular research network enables hospitals and physician practices to develop their research
programs and provides the opportunity for patients to consider participation in clinical trials in their own community.
Our hospitals also work with physician partners who are engaged in research and clinical trial initiatives in multiple specialty areas.
M RS A A B C ’s
A new strain of antibiotic-resistant staph, or MRSA, is spread easily and is much more difficult to treat than ordinary staph bacteria.
The growing prevalence of MRSA in our communities and in our hospitals is creating new challenges for the healthcare community.
In response, HCA hospitals across the nation, under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, HCA’s chief medical officer, have
implemented more aggressive infection prevention protocols to tackle this issue. HCA facilities have also been provided with a
proactive education campaign for patients, visitors and staff to prevent infections from occurring and spreading.
We see MRSA as a national challenge affecting hospitals and communities alike, and would like to share our materials as a way
of contributing to the education and more importantly the eradication of MRSA. Please feel free to use the tools from our MRSA
campaign, available on our hospital websites, at home, work, or school, and join us in the fight to eradicate MRSA.

We were the first U.S. healthcare system to voluntarily perform
a simple blood test to screen newborns for elevated levels of
bilirubin that triggers jaundice. By identifying newborns at risk for
Kernicterus, which causes permanent brain damage and physical
impairment, we can treat them immediately and prevent this
serious health threat.
F l u S e a s on P r e pa r at i on
Influenza remains the number one cause of vaccine-preventable death in the United States. Infected health workers can infect others
and we want to eliminate that risk. Any death from a disease that is vaccine-preventable is one too many. HCA employees have
received national recognition for their commitment to patient safety for their efforts in supporting HCA’s flu immunization policy. This
flu season our goal is the same– a commitment to 100 percent patient safety. The way we will achieve this goal is through vaccination
of health workers with direct patient contact or wearing a mask when vaccine is not possible.

HCA West Florida developed and implemented an innovative program called Responsible Imaging to enhance medical imaging
safety through state-of-the-art monitoring, use of best practices and extensive education of staff, physicians and patients. The
program was developed and piloted at Largo Medical Center and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point with LANDAUER®, a global
leader- in radiation science and services. With increasing attention on the long-term cumulative effect of radiation exposure, we are
excited to be a leader in responsible medical imaging practices to ensure the lowest dose of exposure for our patients.
V i ta l s N o w
The West Florida Division was selected to pilot a new technology called Vitals Now – this enables the automatic capture of patient
vitals right from the bedside into our main Clinical System. This enhances clinical decision making for our care givers as patient
vitals are now readily available in the patient’s record.
8 Quality & Patient Safety / Specialized Care
HCA West Florida – Pinellas County
S pecializ ed care
Emer genc y E xcellence
Our strong focus on enhancing emergency care and improving processes continues
to keep ER wait times at Pinellas County HCA hospitals below national averages, but
more importantly we are exceeding national guidelines in delivering care quickly,
when it matters most. STEMI time averages, along with wait time averages, are now
featured on website home pages for Largo Medical Center and Northside Hospital
whom offer PCI services.
All 4 Pinellas hospitals are Chest Pain Accredited and have earned Advanced Primary
Stroke Center certification by the Joint Commission. Protocol driven care that can
begin in the field through direct communications with local EMS teams are all part
of our commitment to improve quality in our busy emergency departments.
H e a rt & Va s c u l a r N e t w or k
Our cardiovascular network ensures that life-saving technology and the latest minimally invasive techniques are available in our
communities. All 4 of our hospitals are Accredited Chest Pain Centers, Largo Medical Center and Northside Hospital now offer PCI
and we are consistently beating the national STEMI benchmark of 90 minutes, dramatically improving the lives of our patients
experiencing a heart attack.
The latest surgical techniques for vascular, minimally invasive mitral valve and atrial fibrillation repair provide a safer alternative
for patients suffering from these conditions, improving their quality of life and reducing their risk for other serious complications.
Our Cardiac Cath and EP labs offer state-of-the-art technology and treatments for invasive and noninvasive cardiac procedures.
Largo Medical Center is the only HCA Pinellas facility offering the Convergent Procedure. This is where a cardiac surgeon and
an electrophysiologist combine their unique skills to perform a closed-chest minimally invasive approach to surgery for atrial
fibrillation. Additionally, some of our hospitals have opened specialized chest pain units where patients can be rapidly accessed
and diagnosed without having to be admitted to the hospital.
Expansion of cardiovascular research continued with Northside formally affiliating with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI),
one of the largest clinical research programs in the nation, allowing both hospitals to serve as major cardiovascular clinical research
strategic sites locally.
N e u r o s c ie n c e s & S t r ok e C a r e
Neurosciences is a key focus at many of our hospitals, with neurosurgeons skilled in treating everything from brain tumors to back
pain. Northside earned Comprehensive Stroke Center designation and offers one of the few interventional neuroradiology programs
on Florida’s west coast. Largo Medical Center and Northside Hospital offer neurosurgery services today and all of our hospitals are Joint
Commission designated Advanced Primary Stroke Centers, the gold standard for ensuring the highest level of care is immediately
available.
Physicians at the Florida Spine & Neuro Center at Largo Medical Center specialize in diagnosing illnesses of the spine. Patient services
include a dedicated team of nurses with a dedicated patient care floor, and all-private rooms.
The Neuroscience Institute at Northside Hospital is a state-of–the-art program, providing new methods for the treatment and prevention
of neurologic conditions such as stroke and aneurysms, as well as brain tumors, epilepsy, hydrocephalus and Multiple Sclerosis.
Offering one of only two interventional neuroradiology programs in Pinellas County, Northside Hospital is now able to extend the
treatment window for stroke patients from three hours to eight hours. In addition to stroke care, Northside Hospital will be able to
provide minimally-invasive treatment for cerebral aneurysms, a condition that at one time required local hospitals to transfer patients
as far away as Jacksonville to receive care that will now be available in the Pinellas County area.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country, exceeded only
by heart disease. Our hospitals have committed to quality care by striving to
meet and exceed the many standards required for the American College of
Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) Accreditation. Congratulations
to St. Petersburg General for achieving Accredited Cancer Center designation
this year from the ACoS CoC. Largo Medical Center is the other accredited HCA
hospital in Pinellas County.
Since most cancer patients require multiple types of treatment, good
communication between providers is essential. One of the best ways to
accomplish this is through tumor board reviews, where a variety of medical
specialists including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists,
pathologists, radiologists and hospital clinical and support staff meet regularly
to proactively to review patient cases.
Advanced technology is another commitment with our hospitals providing
patients the latest in everything from digital mammography for early detection
to minimally invasive surgery for treatment.
10 Specialized Care
HCA West Florida – Pinellas County
S u r g i c a l S ol u t i on s
Our network of hospitals offer some of the most efficient and well equipped operating rooms in the area. Advanced systems from
scheduling to pre-op and discharge planning ensure that patients receive the care they need, while individual facilities provide
a variety of enhanced communications such as waiting room monitors, free wi-fi and “tweets” to keep families updated on the
patient’s progress.
From single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) to the da Vinci® robotic system, our hospitals are providing surgeons the tools they
need to perform complex and delicate procedures through tiny incisions, with unmatched precision. St. Petersburg General Hospital
offers the lap-band procedure. Edward White Hospital offers an incisionless reconstructive surgical treatment of gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD) by using EsophyX, the first device exclusively designed for this procedure. In addition to the inpatient and
outpatient surgical programs at our hospitals, our network also includes the 3 free-standing outpatient surgery centers.
R ob ot i c Tr a inin g E p i c e n t e r
Robotic technology is taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand,
introducing precise, versatile instrument movement combined with the ability to
see a three-dimensional visualization of the operative site. St Petersburg General
Hospital was recently designated as a GYN Robotic Epicenter by Intuitive Surgical,
the maker of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. The Epicenter Program purpose it
to provide interested surgeons the unique opportunity to observe highly skilled and
experienced robotic surgeons doing actual surgical procedures on patients. Equally
important is the observation of the collaboration of the whole robotic surgical team
composed of anesthesiologists, OR nurses and OR technicians necessary to optimize
the patient outcomes and efficiencies of the operating room processes.
St Petersburg General Hospital is now one of twenty-five select GYN Robotic
Surgery Training Epicenters in the US. These epicenters have combined experience
exceeding 5,000 cases and have been chosen for excellence in patient outcomes and
dedication to assisting new surgeons through their initial case series. St Petersburg
General Hospital is one of only two in the state of Florida.
New surgeons and their teams visit Epicenter sites to observe cases and learn robotic surgical techniques. Epicenter surgeons then become
mentors and/or proctors for these new surgeons in their learning journey. Even after new robotic surgeons have successfully completed their
initial case series, these mentor-trainee relationships endure through discussions at scientific conferences and through advanced training.
S p ine C a r e

experts in minimally invasive procedures with less pain and faster recovery.
At the Pavilion, patients are treated like hotel guests who are temporarily sidelined with an orthopedic problem. The focus is on
wellness, and guests are active participants in a unique treatment model that begins at diagnosis in the surgeon’s office and continues
at the Pavilion and later at the patient’s homes. As soon as they arrive, patients will notice their experience at the Pavilion is totally
different from a traditional hospital stay. A concierge handles all the details, including door-to-door transportation if needed, and then
makes sure guests feel comfortable and pampered during their stay. Guests can wear their own clothes instead of a hospital gown
and have a companion stay at the hospital with them to act as a personal coach. Research indicates a positive correlation between
personalized healing environments and successful patient outcomes. Everything at the Pavilion is designed to promote a patient’s
sense of well-being so the patient feels better and recovers more quickly.
