Seattle Fire Station 6 is a neighborhood station located at the intersection of two significant arterial
streets, South Jackson Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. The small corner site provides excellent
identity and exposure for this important public safety facility, but also contributed significant limitations
for the preferred function of a drive-through apparatus bay.
Subject to specific dimensions, turning radii, and visibility into the intersection, it was clear the apparatus
bay could only be located at the very corner of the site. The highly transparent two-story volume puts the
fire trucks on display and advertises its presence to the surrounding community.
The two-story facility locates two levels of sleeping rooms and support spaces along a quiet alley, with
the more active spaces such as the Station Office, Fitness Center, and Beanery [kitchen] oriented to the
apparatus bay with visibility to the neighborhood beyond. The internal organization of the building is
centered about a sky-lit central scissor stair that minimizes response time and connects the heavily used
Station Office and the Beanery.
Fire Station 6 is currently pending a LEED Gold Certification.
