Message from the
Vice-Chancellor and President
Dear Graduates
Congratulations on your outstanding achievement. On this graduation day we recognise your
commitment and success, and celebrate this important milestone with your family and friends. I am
delighted to share in these celebrations with you.
This is a particularly special year for both the University of Newcastle (UON) and the Republic of
Singapore. In 2015, we each mark our 50th anniversaries. Through “UON Celebrating 50” and
“SG50”, we celebrate our histories, our communities, our leaders and – importantly for the University–
our first-rate graduates, who form the centrepiece of our story now and into the future.
With our valued partners, PSB Academy and BCA Academy, the University is proud to have contributed
to the education of students in Singapore over its 50 years, from the first Colombo Plan Scholars
who arrived in Newcastle in 1968 through to the students enrolled at UON Singapore today.
Students from all over Asia choose UON Singapore to receive an Australian degree in a uniquely
all-Asian setting. Our UON Singapore students can now graduate with degrees in business,
commerce, engineering, construction management, occupational health and safety, communication
and information technology, qualifications that enable them to be competitive on the world stage and
to be leaders in their field of endeavour.
Wherever your professional journey takes you, you can be proud of your association with UON, a
truly world-class institution. Last year, UON was announced as Australia’s number one university in
the QS ‘Top 50 Under 50’ rankings and was ranked in the world’s top 20 universities under 50 years
of age. These independent rankings are evidence of a commitment and focus across the University
on research excellence and high quality education outcomes.
UON’s strong relationships with partner institutions across Asia, as well as with leading industry
and government bodies, have contributed to the University’s outstanding teaching and research
record. As a graduate of this University, you can be assured that your education has equipped you to
take on the challenges of a global workplace and that our institution is positioned to grow its
international profile and succeed in the Asian Century.
Today marks your entry into the University’s 130,000-strong alumni network, comprising members
from 121 countries. The Singapore Alumni Association provides many opportunities for you to
connect with friends and professional associates across the globe. I encourage you to engage with
the Singapore Alumni Chapter and remain connected to our university.
On behalf of the University of Newcastle I congratulate you on your graduation and wish you every
success for the future.

GRADUATION – NOVEMBER 2015
The graduation
ceremony
THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE FANFARE
WITH DISTINCTION
The Fanfare is performed at all ceremonial functions to herald the
entry and departure of the Chancellor and other members of the
Council. It was composed by Professor Robert Constable and first
performed in 1994.
A Bachelors or Masters degree is conferred with distinction in
cases where a candidate has achieved a Grade Point Average of
6.0 or above in the degree, out of a maximum of 7.0.
COMBINED DEGREE
THE UNIVERSITY MEDAL
The award of a University Medal is an honour made only when
there is a candidate of sufficient merit. To be considered for this
award, a graduate must have a consistent record of exceptional
academic achievement at all levels of their degree program, and
qualify with the highest level of that degree.
HONOURS
A Bachelor Honours degree is designed to be a pathway for research
and further learning or to qualify individuals for certain professions.
Bachelor Honours Degree qualifications are at level 8 of the
Australian Qualifications Framework. Graduates at this level will
have advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly
skilled work and/or further learning.
A combined degree is one where a student studies for two separate
degrees at the same time. It is possible for the student to complete
the degree requirements for one degree ahead of the other. The
student receives a testamur for each degree.

A brief history
of graduation
The graduation ceremony is one of great antiquity. Its essential
features have been the same since the 12th century when the first
universities came into existence. Its necessary constituents are
the Chancellor or his or her Deputy, the academic staff, the
graduates, and the public.
The church had a monopoly of education, partly because it was the
guardian of true doctrine, and partly because clerics were almost
the only people who could read and write. As a result, the only
person who could license a teacher was the bishop of a diocese
until, under pressure of other business; he deputed the task to his
chief secretary or chancellor.
The second group participating in the ceremony is the academic
staff. In the 12th century they would all have been called “masters”
or MAs. At that date they were paid no salaries, but hired their own
lecture rooms and charged their own fees. But they also formed
themselves into a guild or union, which is what universitas originally
meant. In the 13th century they won a great victory when they
persuaded the Pope to decree that chancellors were obliged to
confer degrees on all those nominated by the masters. That is why
the masters examine the candidates, why the Dean, acting as their
spokesperson, reads out the names of those who are to receive
degrees, and why the masters at this ceremony watch to see that
the Chancellor or his Deputy does what is required of him.
Thirdly the graduates. The word “degree” comes from the Latin
gradus, which means “a step”. When students are admitted to a
bachelor degree they move one step up towards the mastership.
When they are admitted to a master’s degree they climb another
step and come up on a level with the masters, who then receive
them into their guild or universitas.
The academic gowns are derived from the everyday dress of the
medieval clergy. In the Middle Ages they were not open in front,
but closed like a clergyman’s cassock. It was in about 1500 that
academics had the front opened up so as to display the fine clothes
which they were wearing underneath. The hood was the normal
medieval headwear, but it soon acquired a coloured lining. By the
17th century, if not earlier, these colours were strictly controlled so
that anyone could identify from the colour of a graduate’s hood, the
university and the degree.
The public is the fourth participant. It has an important function
because the whole point of the proceedings is that they should be
seen and heard by valid witnesses. The public hears the words of
the Dean and the Chancellor and sees the new graduates dressed
in their respective gowns or robes.
The foregoing is an adaptation of an address given at a graduation
ceremony at the University of Birmingham by Emeritus Professor R
H C Davis and reprinted in his book ‘From Alfred the Great to Stephen’
(Hambledon Press, 1991), pp. 307-309. It is reproduced with kind
permission of the author’s widow.

GRADUATION – NOVEMBER 2015
UON Singapore
Message from the Pro Vice-Chancellor
and Chief Executive Officer
Congratulations, class of 2015!
Today marks a very proud moment for you and I am excited to be celebrating your
achievements in making the transition from being a University of Newcastle (UON)
student to a UON graduate in this jubilee year.
Chasing a dream requires commitment, passion, and determination and I am sure that you
have carved the first step of the global journey in your chosen career.
As we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, together with SG50, it means that you are
joining the UON family with its rich history of successes and have the potential to become a
leader and an innovator, and make a difference in today’s global society.
We are immensely proud that our presence in Singapore has contributed to further
strengthening the Australia–Singapore relations and contributing to Singapore’s national
agenda by producing quality graduates who give back to society. Through the support of
our valuable partners, PSB Academy and BCA Academy, I know that you have gained not
just academic excellence, but a unique and enriching student experience which we have
provided since our establishment in 2006.
This year we remained in the top 3% of universities in the world, ranked equal 7th for research,
and 90 per cent of our research is world standard or above. In Singapore, we continue to play a
pivotal role in leveraging the University’s excellence in research and innovation by developing
mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships with industries, public and private institutions,
and the wider community. Recently, we completed a project on workplace safety and health in
the construction industry, which provides beneficial productivity impact on professionals
engaged in this area.
The differentiating hallmarks of a UON graduate are the right skills, knowledge, competencies
and attitude to meet and exceed expectations in an increasingly globalised world.
Thank you for your individual contribution as a UON student in Singapore. I hope you
continue to nurture lifelong friendships and network as you move on to your professional
lives and be an inspiration to future students.
I encourage you to stay connected as an alumnus with UON and remember, you will always
have a home and family here at UON.
Graduation is not goodbye, it is only the beginning. Congratulations and good luck!

GRADUATION – NOVEMBER 2015
Giving shapes lives
The University of Newcastle (UON) would like to express its
gratitude to the many donors and sponsors who support the
University. Donations and sponsorships help fund research that
could save a life, contribute to important community projects
and support students to realise their dreams and receive their
degrees through scholarships and prizes.
Around 250 scholarships and 280 prizes - all funded through
donations – will be awarded to students across UON this year.
Research supported through philanthropy has included exploring
how to prevent type 2 diabetes in at risk males, investigating ways to
save the endangered green and golden bell frog, discovering new
medications for depression and helping to fight one of Australia’s
biggest public health issues, obesity, just to name a few.
The University of Newcastle is ranked in the top three per cent of
universities in the world and we continue to build our reputation
as a world-class institution through our dedication to research,
innovation and high quality teaching and learning.
Thank you to all our generous supporters for your ongoing
commitment!
Philanthropy: helping to shape
students’ futures
At the University of Newcastle we pride ourselves on doing things
differently. For 40 years, we’ve pioneered an approach to equity
and excellence that has transformed the way we view education.
We’ve broken down barriers and opened our doors to help
thousands of students enter university and thrive in their
chosen career.
And we’ve seen first-hand how the gift of education can change
lives. Many of our students juggle work and family commitments,
move away from home or travel long distances to study. Others
face huge challenges in their personal lives that make learning at
university harder than it is for most.
That’s why we created the Shaping Futures Scholarship Fund - to
provide financial assistance to academically dedicated students
who are facing hardship or challenges that make it difficult for
them to complete their degrees - those students most in need.
Shaping Futures Scholarships are entirely funded through
donations from alumni, staff and the community. These
scholarships provide support to help cover the cost of tuition
fees, travel costs, computer equipment, text books, living and
accommodation expenses.
“I’ve seen first-hand the challenges so many of our students
face. Giving to a student scholarship is just a small, very
tangible way to help. A student who receives a scholarship
overcomes their hurdles today and makes an impact on all
those around them tomorrow.” Keryl Kavanagh, Shaping
Futures Scholarship Fund donor.

Thank you

Mr Peter Buan Huat TAY
Peter Buan Huat Tay is an outstanding graduate whose
enduring relationship with the University of Newcastle has
been characterised by success and generosity. Mr Tay’s
affiliation with the University reaches back to 1968, when he
began study at the Callaghan Campus under the Colombo
Plan Scholarship Program. He completed his study in 1973,
graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and
Bachelor of Arts (Economics).
Upon returning to Singapore, Mr Tay established his career
through a range of government positions - he began with the
Singapore Ministry of Defence, became the Director of
Manpower in 1978 and 1979 and also served as General
Manager of The Singapore Mint. From 1989 to 2006, Mr Tay
was President and CEO of Singapore Food Industries (SFI)
where he led an astonishing transformation of the company
and is now celebrated for his Human Resources expertise.

2011, Mr Tay coordinated the establishment of the
Singapore Alumni Scholarship which has been strongly
supported by Singapore alumni to raise over $300,000 to
provide up to five scholarships annually. In 2013 he and his
wife, Catherine, established the Catherine and Peter Tay
Excellence Fund which fosters the achievement of
excellence across a variety of endeavours in the University.
In 2011, Mr Tay received the UON Alumni Award for International
Leadership. He is a stand-out in the global alumni community
