The Perfect Cut: Customizing the cut using the Razor
and Scissors with Eva Scrivo
WE ARE SO PROUD AND HONORED TO
ANNOUNCE EVERY SIX WEEKS AT THE
SOHO ACADEMY.
The combination of razor and scissors creates some of the most beautiful shapes, and
allows one to customize haircuts that others cannot emulate. Yet despite being a classic,
the razor remains a misunderstood, often misused, and even a feared hair cutting tool.
This class redefines the razor and reveals its potential by teaching basic to advanced
razor cutting techniques and dispelling the myths and common misconceptions about
this amazing tool. Although historically used to thin the hair or to create alternative
haircuts, the razor can cut classic shapes, graduate or layer the hair, build weight, and if
used correctly can become your go-to tool for curly hair. In addition to determining the
right shape and length for a client, you will learn how to work with a straight blade without
a guard to create soft, clean lines and modern shapes that give movement to the hair and
versatility to the cut. You will also learn how to modify your cutting technique and reach
for the most appropriate tool based not only on the desired look but on variations in hair
texture and density, as well as the shape of the head. You will then practice refining your
work with dry cutting using both scissors and even the razor, thereby not only learning
the rules but also how to break them.

Cutting & Coloring: Designing the Look
In the eyes of our clients, we are not just hairstylists or colorists. We are designers
with the power to transform their look by making the most of what nature gave them.
Incorporating all of the tools at your disposal to effectively design a complete look, takes
not only expertise but a keen eye and a clear understanding of how to balance shapes
with color. Effectively combining cutting and coloring to create beautiful transformations
is the true art of our craft and the best business-building tool you can have. In this class
you will learn how to work with a client’s hair texture and density, face shape, body
type, and personal style, to bring out her best features and modify the weaker ones with
the shape of the haircut and placement of color. The instruction combines a variety of
cutting and coloring techniques, using the razor, scissors, dimensional color blocking,
and balayage. An optional part of the class teaches how to define one’s makeup palette
based on her skin tone and how to expand it with the right hair color. Understanding this
final component makes you a true beauty expert in the eyes of your clients.

Corrective Color & Color Balancing
Fixing the mistakes of others, whether from a salon or a do-it-yourself color job, is a large
part of what we, as professionals, must do. It can be the most rewarding aspect of being
to feel overwhelmed and even panicked when presented with such a challenge. Many
colorists tend to over-think and over-complicate the situation at hand. In this class you
will learn how to find the shortest and the most effective routes to the results you want
with simple techniques for turning any undesirable situation into beautiful hair color, from
balancing and adjusting its tone to correcting a color disaster. You will revisit color theory
the foundation of all color; review how to rebuild pigment with fillers and how porosity
throughout the hair affects the end result; recognize that there is an art to even the most
basic elements of color, such as formulating and applying a single process; learn how to
incorporate balayage to create overall balance and impactful results with subtleties; better
understand how to manage a client’s expectations and more.
