Chairman’s Message
06
It is gratifying to see many of UMPG’s recent signings, both
superstars and new artists alike, achieving tremendous levels
of success. Both Mariah Carey and 50 Cent look to have two of
the most successful records of their careers. Mariah’s new single “We Belong Together” (IDJ) has logged fourteen weeks at
No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is being widely acclaimed as
the “Song of the Summer.” The Mariah CD has now shipped over
5 million world-wide.
Equally impressive are the sales of UMPG’s breakthrough
act The Killers, who’s debut album, Hot Fuss, has now sold
approximately 4 million world-wide.
In addition to these successful artists and our record number of No. 1’s this year, including No. 1 market share in the UK
in the first quarter of 2005, we will not be resting on our laurels.
UMPG is set to launch a new Production Music Library business this fall. We are also preparing for our Global convention of
our Managing Directors from around the world as we discuss
ways to both grow our business and serve you better.
We hope you enjoy this Fall 2005 edition of our newsletter
and we look forward to doing more business with you.

Since exploding on the scene in early 2004,
UMPG’s Scottish art-school rock band Franz
Ferdinand has made quite an impression, garnering a hit single and a 4x platinum album in the
U.K., selling over 3.4 million units worldwide of
the self-titled album Franz Ferdinand.

their anticipated second album, entitled You
Could Have It So Much Better…With Franz
Ferdinand, set for release on October 3, 2005. The
album’s first single, “Do You Want To,” was
released on September 19. The band will play
several UK festival dates and will be touring the
U.S. and Canada this fall.
The band received rave critical reviews
with their debut offering - the New Musical
Express gave the album 9 out of 10 stars and the
BBC called it “a masterpiece of funky, punky,
suave cool from the first track to the last.”
Backed by the infectious strength of
Franz Ferdinand ’s five singles, the group has
had a run of chart success. The album debuted at number 3 on the UK album charts in
February 2004 and reached the top 5 of the
indie rock and Heatseeker charts.
On September 7, 2004 the album was
awarded the 2004 Mercury Music Prize.
“Take Me Out” gained first place in the
Australian Triple J Hottest 100 for 2004, winning more than twice the votes of the second-place entry.
In 2005, “Take Me Out” was in an ad campaign
for the PlayStation Portable game system.

UMPG’s worldwide sensation, The Killers, took the fashionista
pop world by storm in 2004 with the catchiest song of the summer,
“Somebody Told Me.” Their debut album, Hot Fuss, has since gone
four times platinum in the UK, with an astonishing four hit singles:
“Somebody Told Me,” “Mr. Brightside,” “All These Things That I’ve
Done,” and “Smile Like You Mean It.”
The Killers most recently supported U2 on the European leg of
their Vertigo tour and will be playing U.S. dates this fall.
The Las Vegas foursome are blazing the trails of the synth-rock
movement. The innovative sound of combining 80’s dance beats
with heavy guitars is everywhere, and several other like-minded
groups, including UMPG’s own The Bravery, are dominating the airwaves. The Killers and The Bravery have been trading jabs in the
press as part of an ongoing rivalry, landing sucker punches at every
opportunity and garnering both groups extensive publicity.
The Killers originally got together in 2002 and when London-
based indie label Lizard King caught wind of the band’s brewing
hype they were quickly signed and issued the limited-edition single
for “Mr. Brightside.” In October, The Killers’ buzz earned them a
prime spot at the annual CMJ Music Marathon. They were signed to
UMPG’s U.K. office before becoming top worldwide sellers.
The Killers have become a sensation with the public and the
press around the globe, landing on the cover of every major music
magazine and performing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The
O.C. In January 2005 they were the musical guest on Saturday Night
Live and in May they performed throughout MTV Presents: The Next
Generation Xbox Revealed. The Killers have also appeared as musical guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live,
Pepsi Smash, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Britain’s
Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Later with Jools Holland.
The Killers worldwide sales have exceeded 4.3 million albums,
with 1.2 million albums sold in the UK alone.

Cent Dominates Hip-Hop, The World
Already down in history as one of rap/hip hop’s biggest acts ever, the success of 50 Cent
is undeniable. His smooth lyrics and beats, coupled with a hard-core superstar image, has
made him a sensation and catapulted his albums to incredible commercial success. 50 Cent
has sold over 20 million records worldwide. His record-breaking debut album Get Rich or Die
Tryin’ has sold over 12 million units worldwide, with the largest debut in SoundScan history.
His sophomore effort, The Massacre, sold over 1.14 million copies in its first four days of
release and is sittin’ pretty at four times platinum. In 2005, 50 Cent became the first artist to
have four songs in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 since The Beatles in 1964.
50 was named ASCAP’s 2004 Pop and R&B Songwriter of the Year and his book, From
Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens, a violent and introspective memoir, came out August 9 under MTV Books/Pocketbooks.
50 Cent’s business empire includes: a record label (G-Unit Records, a division of Interscope
Records), apparel/footwear ventures (G-Unit Clothing and footwear, joint ventures through the
Ecko Clothing Company and Reebok, respectively),vitamin water (Formula 50,through Glacéau’s
Vitamin Water), watch line (G-Unit Watches, through Jacob & Co), and a video game (50 Cent:
Bulletproof, through Vivendi Games). His future plans are to dominate the film and television
worlds through two new G-Unit ventures in film and television...and his most prized project: the
nonprofit organization The G-Unity Foundation, which aims to better the life of urban youth.
50 Cent is currently on tour and is wrapping the semi-autobiographical film in which he
stars, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, set for release in fall 2005 under MTV Films.
Universal Music Publishing Group Celebrates
Mariah Carey's Song of the Summer
On the heels of signing with UMPG, Mariah Carey released her monumental achievement, The Emancipation Of
Mimi (IDJ) which crossed the RIAA double-platinum mark of 2 million units within 6 weeks. Carey secured her place as
the #1 most successful female artist of all time as the single "We Belong Together" reigns for its fourteenth week at No.
1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Of the 20 weeks the single has been on the chart, a dozen have been spent in the No. 1 position. The track's reign was interrupted for just one week in June, but otherwise it has ruled the chart all summer.
On the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the cut enters its 13th straight week on top at time of press, and the title is also
No. 1 on the Hot Ringtones tally for a fourth week.
"We Belong Together" is Mariah Carey's 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only
artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1's) and Elvis Presley (18 #1's) in the modern era. With 62 total
weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.
Commented David Renzer, Worldwide Chairman/CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group: "Mariah Carey is
well known for her incredible voice, but not all recognize her incredible strength as a songwriter and the fact
that she has co-written all of her best known songs. We plan to champion this strength and the amazing
songs in her catalogue. We are also excited about potential opportunities for Mariah to align her musical talents with Oscar-caliber feature film prospects in the works."
UMPG recently released a Mariah Carey Film/TV CD sampler celebrating her illustrious
career, her amazing vocals, and her extensive catalog of hits by highlighting a full range
of Mariah's material for music supervisors.
Mariah Carey recorded her Emancipation of Mimi LP for Island/Def Jam
under the auspices of L.A Reid and the management of Benny Medina at
Handprint Entertainment.

SPOTLIGHT ON GLOBAL
ADMINISTRATION
Highlights of UMPG’s Proprietary
Global Administration Systems
By Guest Columnist: Mike Sammis, Exec. VP/Chief Financial Officer
Most people tend to think of administration systems as a
back office function which is not “core” to our business. Try telling
that to the thousands of clients we have...that maximizing our collections is not a primary focus. At UMPG, we have always recognized this position as a fallacy. As is the case in most successful
businesses, it’s the bottom line that counts and maximizing royalty payments to our clients is our #1 priority.
We strive to collect every cent, for every right, from every
source, in every territory, for every use. Because of the importance
of this objective, we will not sub-contract our responsibilities.
Instead, we employ local personnel who understand local conditions, exploit the local market, chase the local money and deal with
local writers. In support of this, we have our Global Center (in
London) which, supported by proven systems of extensive
automation, provides supervision, direction, royalty review, control
and strategy.
Certain upstart organisations boast of services they offer
almost as if they were unique to them! In reality, many publishers
offer a very similar suite of services. The difference is in the execution of those services.
• Global Reach - We are active in 52 territories, each supported by the same systems with standardized copyright detail in
each and every territory.
• Global Systems – All of our global systems are integrated. Information may be initiated in one territory and will flow seamlessly, accurately and timely throughout all other territories as
appropriate.
• Automatic Circulation - Deal / copyright information
entered in one territory is automatically circulated to all territories
of our control.
• Electronic Registration – We have a flexible registration format which enables us to register rights by whatever method
will be accepted by the relevant society or performing rights orga-
nization. We prefer to register our rights electronically (including via
standard industry formats such as CWR) where possible, but for
those organizations that do not as yet accept electronic delivery, we
still employ automated processes to generate registrations by alternate methods.
• Pre-emptive Mechanical Claiming – We have
systems in place to automatically identify our controlling interest
for territories (eg, Australasia, Asia and Latin America, North
America and South Africa) which do not have a mechanical rights
society, requiring us to deal directly with the numerous local record
labels.
• Global Royalty Review - We have dedicated teams,
both centrally and locally, who undertake general and targeted
reviews of both mechanical, performance and broadcast use. The
predictive nature and work flow processes embedded in our sophisticated software ensures that our reviews are wide ranging, comprehensive and timely.
• Global Center - Our Glocal Center in London is staffed by
highly trained and globally experienced publishing and IT specialists, who design, oversee and operate our global processes, support
our local operations, and liaise with societies, agencies and labels
worldwide. The Center is headed by Theo Strikkers (Sr. VP – Global
Administration) and Mike Donegan (VP – Global IT), both of whom
report to Michael Sammis (EVP / CFO).
Notwithstanding the above, we are not satisfied with status
quo. Each year, we make a significant further investment in our
systems, designed to address the needs of our customers and
keep pace with the ever-changing business environment in
which we operate. Our recent and near-term development
efforts are focused primarily on the most important issue to us;
customer service. We expect to roll-out some exciting new features within the next year so stay tuned!

UMPG Nashville RED HOT in 2005
Overview
UMPG Nashville is red hot in 2005. Not only have they scored three
number one singles in the country charts, they also unleashed a number one AC
record with Michael Buble’s Home. UMPG Nashville writers have contributed songs
in over 70% of the albums represented on SoundScan’s Top 75 Country Albums
chart. UMPG Nashville writers have also recently scored activity on pop acts Celine
Dion, Lindsay Lohan, Bree Larson, Kings of Leon and Il Divo. The Christian division
launched last year has experienced significant growth and an Imprint Label for the
division will be launched very soon.
New

UMPG Nashville writers are behind some of this fall’s biggest releases. Faith Hill just
released her first album in four years containing four UMPG Songs from writers Rivers

recorded UMPG songs for their upcoming releases include, Gretchen Wilson, Kenny Chesney,

Currington, Joe Nichols and Reba McEntire.
New Initiative
In conjunction with the 2005 CMA Awards Presentation in New York City, UMPG
Nashville is focused on creating use of its country catalog in the world of advertising and corporate sponsorship. Several UMPG Nashville writers will be performing
in the round at various agencies, including Radney Foster, Rivers Rutherford,
Anthony Smith and catalog writer Mike Reid. UMPG Nashville has also created
chronological music samplers, as well as a highlight DVD, which will be timeless
tools for catalog exploitation.

UMPG Infiltrates Top Video Games
By Guest Columnist: Carianne Brown, Director, Motion Picture And Television Music
A survey by New York marketing firm ElectricArtists in 2003
found that among its sample of video game consumers ages
13 to 32, 40 percent had bought a CD after hearing it in a video
game. This is great news for UMPG, as UMPG songs are represented in virtually every popular game. One of the biggest
sports titles is EA’s “Madden.” "A song in Madden hypothetically will get over 500 million spins, which is close to, if not
beats, the No. 1 record in America when it comes to the number of impressions," explains Steve Schnur, Worldwide
Executive of Music for Electronic Arts. UMPG songs in this
year’s Madden include: “Ink” (Finch), “No Way Back” (Foo
Fighters), “Bring It On” (Godsmack), and “Like That” (Memphis
Bleek). Just as Madden is a great platform for introducing new
songs to a captive audience, video games can also be a great
16 • UMPG
way to re-expose catalog songs. The upcoming Activision
game “True Crime New York City” uses a combination of old
and new songs including: “East 3rd Street” (Quicksand), “The
Choice Is Yours” (Black Sheep), and “An Honest Mistake” (The
Bravery). Video games have truly become mainstream – it’s
not just kids playing them anymore but plenty of adults as well.
One example of a mature title that has quite impressive sales
figures is “Grand Theft Auto,” and the most recent installment
includes over 30 UMPG titles. UMPG also has songs in “Tony
Hawks American Wasteland,” “American Chopper,” “Burnout,”
“FIFA,” “NCAA Football,” and “Midnight Club 3” among many
others. The next generation of consoles should enable consumers to buy music directly from the device, which will further increase the significance of having songs in video games.

Avril Lavigne, Zucchero, and Chemical Brothers are in synch Good news
from the synch field: during the last few weeks Avril Lavigne gave her first authorization ever
for her “He wasn’t” to be synched with ice cream Cornetto Soft Algida. “Il volo” by Zucchero
is the soundtrack for Unicredit Banca new TV campaign, and “Believe” by the Chemical
Brothers gives atmosphere to the Alice Telecom new tv ad.
Zucchero’s ”Zu & Co.“ charts at the Billboard top 200 The Wall Street Journal
recently featured Zucchero on the front page, when the distribution deal with Concord Records
was announced. In fact, the label signed the Italian singer/songwriter’s album “Zu & Co.” to
be distributed all over the United States not only through the traditional channels, but also
through the Starbucks coffee shop chain. 120,000 copies of the album were put out, and the
record entered immediately the Billboard Top 200. “Zu & Co.” already a million seller in Europe,
features 14 songs, and pairs the singer with a line up of stars including Eric Clapton, the late

Ilona Mitrecey,
a French girl of twelve, is the sensation of the year in France. But her production and writers team is
Italian: in fact, UMP Italy signed composer/producer Ivan Russo (from Naples) and soon “Un monde parfait” (a perfect world) was created. The single (released in France on indie label Scorpio) nested for 15
weeks at No. 1 in the French charts, selling more than 1.5 million singles, and is still No. 3 in Germany
(on Universal) and No. 3 in the Billboard Eurochart. The follow up “C’est les vacances,” again written by
Russo’s team and published by UMP Italy, is another hit - 400,000 units to date in France and No. 10 in
the Eurochart - while “Un monde parfait” is still climbing charts in Austria, Belgium, Switzerland,

two hits in Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks charts. One of them was written and performed
alongside Daddy Yankee while the other is from the compilation album “Los Anormales”
off Hector’s own label Goldstar. Hector and Jay Z joined up earlier this year to develop
several projects including a record deal and a clothing line. In addition to touring and
performing at several events, Hector is currently working on his upcoming solo debut
album. Hector represented Latin America and reggaeton as a panelist and performer at
the 2005 Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Conference and Awards in Atlanta, Georgia.
Emilio and Gloria Estefan, the Unstoppable Duo
Argentina’s Acquisition
As a part of their silver anniversary show, PBS presented mulitGrammy award winning couple Gloria and Emilio Estefan with the
National Artistic Achievement Award. The Estefans were at the gala
celebration alongside The Beach Boys, The O’ Jays, Jimmy Smits
and more. Earlier this year, Emilio Estefan joined his wife as he was
presented with a star next to hers on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
They continue discovering and developing new talent on their reality show ‘Voces De America’. Their incredible cast of writers continue to place hit after hit.
UMPG Argentina recently
joined in an exclusive
agreement with the
country’s most important
folkloric writer, Horacio Guarany. As
such, they acquired an impressive back
catalogue with many of his biggest hits.
The deal gives UMPG the right of first
refusal for any songs he writes for the
rest of his life.
In The Works & Hot
Off the Press
According to the July 30 edition of Billboard,
there has been a surge in the sales of Latin
Albums. This has been attributed in part to the huge impact we
have felt with the reggaeton movement. The effects of this market surge have been felt as several of our artists released or prepare to release new albums. Alejandro Lerner is currently working on an upcoming studio album. A.B. Quintanilla III recently
released his Duets album. Gustavo Santaolalla’s protégé, Javier
Garcia released his critically acclaimed ‘13’ album. Many of our
newly acquired reggaeton artists are on the verge of launching
debut solo albums. Additionally, several of our developing artists
inked record deals and have released or are on the verge of
releasing their debut albums.
BRAZIL
Jose Cosme Anchieta, Publishing Manager
UMPG Brazil’s sub-publishing agreement with Mayimba Music
gave them control of Frankie J’s smash hit, “Obsession” for their
territory. The song has been translated and re-recorded by KLB,
a Brazilian group whose debut album sold over 1 million units.
Brazil continues with heavy synch placement including a GM ad
which uses one of Sandy & Junior’s hits. Their recent song
placements are expected to generate good sales. UMPG continues having a stronghold on Brazil’s national charts as well as on
their ring tone market.

UMPG SCORE TWO APRA AWARDS
UMPG’s Jet have capped off an amazing 24 months after taking home the prestigious ‘Songwriter of the
Year’ gong at the 2005 APRA awards. The band are currently in lock-down at a Melbourne recording studio
preparing the follow-up to their 8x Platinum debut album Get Born, Australia’s highest selling album of 2004.
Via a video message, Jet’s frontman Nic Cester gave a special thank you to Universal Music Publishing
Australia for their committed and continued role in the band’s enormous success.
In what capped off a memorable night for UMPG, U.S. rock act 3 Doors Down beat out a hotly contested field including Hoobastank, Maroon 5 and Anastacia to take home the coveted ‘Most Performed Foreign
Work’ award for their Australian radio smash ‘Here Without You’.
The Living End Ready
Album Number Four
After cementing their reputation as one of Australia’s premier live acts, The Living
End has set up camp in the tropical surrounds of Byron Bay with acclaimed local producer Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, Kate Bush, Silverchair) to commence work on the
eagerly anticipated follow-up to 2003’s hugely successful LP ‘Modern ARTillery’.
The band has also been announced as the headline act for October’s gargantuan
Coca Cola ‘Live’n’Local’ festival, an event that will see the band road-test new material
from the new album in sold-out arena’s around Australia.
The first single from the album is penciled for a November release through EMI,
with the album to follow in early 2006.
UMPG AUSTRALIA SIGN WOLFMOTHER
After a courting period that can be traced back to the band’s first
ever public show at Sydney’s infamous Hopetoun hotel, UMPG Australia
are delighted to announce the signing of Wolfmother to an exclusive
long-term publishing deal for the Australia/New Zealand territory.
The howling three piece hailing from Sydney’s inner-west shot to
prominence on the Australian live circuit in mid-2004 with a 70’s rock
infused sound that nods its head to seminal influences including Jimi
Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. However far from being a tribute band, Wolfmother create a
groove-laden racket that is unmistakably unique.
“For over 12 months we have been watching Wolfmother develop into one of the most exciting
new rock bands on the planet, and it’s fantastic to now be able to work directly with them.” Spoke
UMPG Australia’s Managing Director Bob Aird of the deal.
UMPG Australia’s Head of A&R/Creative Heath Johns is equally enthused, commenting that
“Witnessing Wolfmother perform live in front of twenty punters was a defining experience that I will
never forget. The raw talent and energy of this band is undeniable and I am excited about the role that
UMPG will play in the band’s continuing success. Forget the hype, Wolfmother are the real deal”
The band is currently locked away in an LA studio putting the finishing touches on their highly
anticipated debut LP with renowned producer Dave Sardy (Jet, Dandy Warhols, Marilyn Manson) at the
helm. The as yet untitled album is slated for an October release through Modular/Universal.
Wolfmother are the hottest new property in Australian music and UMPG Australia are thrilled
about the prospect of ensuring that 2005 becomes etched in local rock folklore as the year of the wolf!
ALEX LLOYD RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE AND ALBUM #4
Australia’s most successful contemporary male singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd, has returned to the national stage with the release of the
stunning new single ‘Never Meant to Fail’.
Already one of the most played songs on Australian radio, the soaring new track showcases an emotive and intimate vocal over the kind
of lush instrumentation that has made Lloyd one of the most revered songwriters and performers in Australia.
Recorded in Seattle with esteemed producer Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Three Doors Down) ‘Never Meant to Fail’ is the first single lifted
from Lloyd’s forthcoming self-titled fourth album.
