welcome
July 2016
Dear Friends,
Tamuz, 5776
With a new year rapidly approaching, there is cause for much excitement, though tempered with the challenges
that lie before our Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center.
For us, we are glowing with the prospect that the vision of our “founding fathers” in the mid-70’s is soon to become
a reality. Needless to say, we were overjoyed when the permit to begin construction of the George Feldenkreis and
Fanny Hanono Cultural Arts and Education Center was delivered in our hands. This has been, to coin a phrase from
a popular Beatles song, a “long and winding road,” but we believe that once this campus expansion project has
been completed, we will have confirmed the old adage that “good things in life are worth waiting for.” Once the
sounds of machinery are echoing throughout the campus, we will provide you with weekly updates about the
progress being made and invite you to be part of a planning process in developing the programming that will be
developed to be housed in our new dance studios, music rooms, gymnastics studio, art room, theater/social hall,
and exhibition hall. Even with the pouring of cement and laying of bricks and mortar, our capital campaign is far
from complete and thus we call upon you to lend your support to this community endeavor. With numerous naming
opportunities still available, our philosophy remains that ‘no gift is too large nor too small and we welcome the
participation of all of our MAR-JCC family and friends in a project that will make a meaningful and positive impact
on you, your family, and our community.
While building for the future is taking place, we will as an agency be...
•Evaluating the scope of programming that we offer, determining how best to provide the highest caliber of
service competitively priced;
•Delving into our membership structure as we analyze what steps should be considered to enhance the
value of affiliating with the MAR-JCC;
•Continuing to review our staffing so that we are positioned to best respond to the evolving administrative
and programmatic needs of a growing institution
•Securing new sources of revenue, a high priority for MAR-JCC staff and lay leadership in order to address
•INCREASED costs to sustain our 7 day/week operation on an expansive 17 acre campus;
•INCREASED requests for scholarship assistance by those without the financial wherewithal to
participate in MAR-JCC programs and activities;.
•INCREASED security costs to maintain a safe and secure campus;
•START-UP costs to introduce new and innovative programming to an already broad menu of
program and activity
Recently, you may have noticed campus improvements either completed or currently underway (some of which
associated with damage sustained during this past year’s tornado):
•New fencing has been erected around our Soffer Family Tennis Center and Feldenkreis-Feig-Hanono
Athletic Field;
•Tennis courts are in the process of being resurfaced at the Soffer Family Tennis Center;
•Umbrellas have been replaced at our Schmidt Aquatics Center;
•A new water tower for our Robert Russell Administration Building and Lipton Community Services Building has
been installed;
•The construction of a new classroom in our Bronson Early Childhood Development Center to accommodate
a growing waitlist;
•Modifying an existing meeting room (near the Bamachol Dance Academy office) to a dance studio in
response to increased requests for an expanded dance program
Certainly, it is easy to see that It takes “a lot” for a Jewish communal institution like the Michael-Ann Russell
Jewish Community Center located on the Sanford l. Ziff Campus to function at the capacity that it does
twelve months out of the year. This is due to a committed and dedicated staff working in partnership with an
outstanding corps of lay leaders and other volunteers. To both groups, we extend our sincere appreciation
for their time and energy to ensure that the MAR-JCC remains a center for Jewish life and community here in
Northeast Miami-Dade. Along that vein, we want to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to Paul
Kruss, who recently completed his two-year term as Chairman of the Board and now assumes the position of
Immediate Past Chairman of the Board/Chairman of the Advisory Committee. We look forward to Paul’s
continued involvment and insight during what promises to be a very exciting period in our MAR-JCC’s history.
With the sounds of summer rapidly drawing to a close, it is our hope that you will avail yourselves of the many
programs, classes, and activities outlined in this Fall/Winter Program Guide. Here, you see, an array of
offerings reflecting various interests and touching upon age groups 2 months old – older adult. These offerings
continue to be expanded upon so for the most updated information, we ask you to check out our website @
www.marjcc.org.
After browsing through the Program Guide, we think we are stating the obvious when we say that the MARJCC has so much for you and your family ALL UNDER ONE ROOF, offering an environment of comfort,
convenience, caring, and community. We urge you to have us as a part of your life and to let us know how
we may best serve you and your family…both today and tomorrow.
With best wishes,
Fanny Hanono

today and tomorrow!
Your donation makes all the difference
The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is a non-profit organization with daily operations
funded by membership dues; registration fees; state, county, and foundation grants; as well as from
support by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and the United Way of Miami-Dade. Although
those funds contribute to sustaining the basic operations of the MAR-JCC, we rely upon the
generosity of members, friends, and businesses to further provide additional funding for scholarships,
programming, campus improvements, and overall enhancements and progress.
That is where you come in!
Your gift to the MAR-JCC Annual Appeal, Capital Campaign, and Create a Jewish
Legacy/Endowment Campaign provides additional funds necessary to ensure we can operate at
an optimum level and are able to grow and change for years to come.
Your contribution makes an incredible IMPACT!
Your philanthropic needs are our main concern
We understand that as a donor you are unique, as are your interests and passions. At the MAR-JCC,
our goal is to get to know you and to understand your philanthropic needs. In this way, we can
customize your donor experience and assist you in reaching your personal philanthropic goals. The
MAR-JCC’s three main fundraising initiatives are listed below. To explore any of these opportunities,

Create a Jewish Legacy - Endowment Campaign - CJL is a program representing a shared
commitment by area synagogues, agencies, and day schools to work together to secure a more
vibrant Jewish future. With CJL, you have the ability to create one legacy gift which can benefit all of
the Jewish organizations that are important to you. Legacy giving can take the form of a bequest in
your will, gift of life insurance, gift of IRA or Pension funds, gift of cash or assets, and a variety of other
vehicles. Gifts to the endowment are deposited, in perpetuity, and only a portion of the annual interest
earned on this account is used. This means your gift will continue to be impactful FOREVER! Whether
you want to provide support with an immediate contribution or want to design a plan through CJL to
benefit the MAR-JCC in the future, there are many options from which to choose.

vehicles. Each MAR-JCC event and program has its own unique attendance/demographic and
sponsorship packages are available based on those factors.
Directed Giving
The MAR-JCC has a number of funds, established internally or by our generous donors, which are

Bamachol, (in Hebrew means “in the dance”) brings the Israeli concept of “dance academy” to our
Michael-Ann Russell JCC. The program allows children to grow physically, socially, artistically, and
creatively. Bamachol promotes skills development, friendship, mutual respect, and Jewish culture,
under the supervision of highly qualified and talented staff. The division into age groups and class levels
allows each child to have his or her own path of advancement, based on interest and talent.
10% discount applies for any registration of 3 or more Bamachol dance classes per person.

performance(s). Position(s) will be directly affected by attendance.
Yearly Classes: More than four absences, the student may be asked not to be in a portion or a whole choreography in future
performance(s). Position(s) will be directly affected by attendance.

disruptive to the class will be dismissed from the class, and parent(s) will be called for a meeting with the Dance Director. A
student that is dismissed from class more than twice, will be asked to leave the program, with no refund of fees.

The Lady With All The Answers: An Evening with Ann Landers • by David Rambo
JCAT Community Production • Wednesday, September 14 - Sunday, September 25
•Directed by Michael Andron
The Los Angeles Times called The Lady With All The Answers about Ann Landers “…folksy, funny, straightforward and validating…a
smile-inducing, tear duct-activating reunion with a woman who might have been a stranger but seemed like family---engaging from
the beginning to end.” Some Mature Subject Matter
Shrek, The Musical • Book and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Music by Jeanine Tesori
JCAT Youth Production • Wednesday, November 30 - Sunday, December 18 • Directed by Michael Andron
Musical Direction by Marlena Tuchinsky • Choreography by Ron Headrick
Auditions: End of August, check at www.jcctheatre.com
Shrek is “…a gently subversive fairy tale with a contemporary edge. Conjuring genuine enchantment without quaintness or treacly
sentimentality. Gleefully anachronistic popular references and knockout characters brimming with heart.” (Variety) “The most
ingeniously wacky, transcendently tasteless Broadway musical since The Producers. Altogether irresistible.” (USA Today)
Lend Me A Tenor • by Ken Ludwig
JCAT Community Production • Wednesday, January 18 - Sunday, February 5 • Directed by John Ferry
“An accelerating snowball of laughter, Lend Me A Tenor has the class and charm of a Kaufman and Hart comedy plus all the doorslamming hilarity of a Marx Brothers' classic like Room Service." “A furiously paced comedy with more than a touch of the Marx
brothers… A marvelous combination of wonderful farcical moments and funny lines.” - Time Out New York
A Special JCAT Engagement: The Hebrew Hillbilly: 50 Shades of Oy Vey
•Starring Shelley Fisher
4 performances only: February 15, 16, 18, & 19
Kosher meets Cornbread, Blues and Rock ‘N' Roll in Memphis! Singer-songwriter Shelley Fisher’s critically acclaimed solo musical play.
Fisher's story of a good little southern Jewish girl with big rock and roll dreams gets fueled by15 show-stopping numbers. “Known as
"The Memphis Belle of L.A.," anyone who has ever met Fisher, knows of her genuine, down home personality that puts you immediately
at ease - and this warmth lays at the beating heart of The Hebrew Hillbilly.” Huffington Post Shelley Fisher is a great, insightful talent,
and a wonderful interpreter of the southern Jewish experience. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin says “Shelley Fisher will have you laughing your
kishkes off one moment, and in tears the very next. The dream may be hers, the emotions belong to all of us.”
I Remember Mama by John Van Druten
JCAT Youth Production • Wednesday, March 15 - Sunday, April 2 • Directed by Ron Headrick
The story of the struggles and triumphs of a Norwegian immigrant family in 1912, set in their new home on Steiner Street. Through hard
work, wise financial decisions and creative common sense, they manage to raise and educate their children. "One of the most
heartwarming portraits of American family life yet to reach the stage and one of the great favorites. An American classic!”
