Six Keys to Successful Weight Training
SECTION C s The Week Beginning July 7, 2010 s The Springfield Paper
Six Keys to Successful Weight Training
Pat Frock - Fitness Trainer
To make clear the simplicity of bodybuilding
I’ve arranged a list of six
basic keys to successful
training. They’re nothing
new and read like the same
stuff in any motivational
book on the market today.
Yet they are essential to
getting started and sticking to it.
1. Set a realistic goal short and long term.
2. Plan an orderly and
thorough routine to train
the entire body.
3. Make a commitment
to stick to your routine for
4-5 weeks - - to begin to
see changes and benefits,
develop perseverance and
create a habit. Resist the
urge to change up your
workout too often.
4. Enthusiasm for training must be recognized as
the main and driving force
to perform successfully.
5. Ease into a training
program with a wholesome, thoughtful nutritional plan - proper food,
order and amount of consumption.
6. Be confident from
the beginning that the application of these sound
principles will produce the
desired results.
GOAL SETTING
Be realistic in your
goal setting. It’s important from the very beginning and throughout your
training to experience
victory in each and every
workout. Ease into your
training with good energy,
being careful not to over-
load yourself and fall victim to mental and physical
burnout. Planning to look
like Rambo by the end of
summer will be frustrating
and you may give up your
training entirely.
ORDER IN TRAINING
Decide how much time
you have to devote to your
training - how many hours
per day and how many
days per week. Based on
this schedule, design a
routine that includes only
basic exercises. Working your mid-section first,
followed by chest, back
shoulders, biceps, triceps
and legs is always a good
rule of thumb. Choose two
exercises per body part,
three to four sets of 8 to
12 reps with a day’s rest
between muscle groups if
you’re just getting started.
COMMITMENT
We now come to commitment, the Big Power
Switch of our mental
mechanism to see if we
have the juice to crank
over the engine and keep
it running. Commitment
is your personal promise
- your word of honor - to
realize your challenge and
is vital in aspiration. The
naturally occurring ingredients of commitment are
consistency, persistence
and determination. These
gut disciplines engaged
with patience and faith set
you in positive motion toward your muscular goals.
ENTHUSIASM
Each workout is a
unique and separate experience unto itself. Events
of the day, mood, energy
levels and tensions effect
every performance differently. Gather up as much
enthusiasm as possible before each workout so you
enter the gym with energy
and a positive attitude.
Your training must not become drudgery or a chore
that has to be done. This is
negative energy, producing less results and must
be willfully resisted.
PACE AND ATTITUDE
Keep your workouts
tight and efficient, leaving
no room for boredom or
idle thought. You should
quickly develop a mature
training attitude allowing no interruptions in
the flow of exercise from
start to finish. This is not
to suggest that you hurry
in your training. A hurried
attitude produces anxiety,
nervousness and agitation, resulting in negative
performance and loss of
concentration. Quite the
opposite, here I encourage a steady lean on your
training - setting a vigorous pace that reflects excitement, confidence and
determination.
Become totally in-
volved with each workout, each set and each
rep. Focus on the performance of the exercise, the
muscles involved and the
feelings that result. Look
for your particular groove
and sense the burn. Training form is your priority
and practice makes perfect. Learn to lift weights
smoothly, sacrificing the
poundage used to gain
quality in your performance. Don’t be anxious
to overload your body
and struggle to lift more
than you can handle. This
will create poor style and
result in disappointment
and injury.
With planning and
consistency weight training can lead to a much
better physique.
Antioxidants: What Are They how do they help skin?
Beauty Buzz:
Q. I hear so much
about antioxidants. What
are they and how do they
help your skin?
A. Wikipedia defines
an antioxidant as a molecule capable of slowing
or preventing oxidation of
other molecules.
It sounds more complicated than it is. Oxidation is a chemical reaction
that produces a byproduct
called free radicals. Free
radicals then cause a chain
reaction in our bodies that
result in damaged cells.
Putting it in terms we can
all relate to, things like
sun, air pollution, cigarette
smoke and stress as well as
normal living all produce
free radicals in our bodies
that work to damage cells.
When the cell that is damaged is in our skin the results are redness, sagging,
wrinkles, hyper pigmentation (dark spots) … all the
nasty things we think of as
aging. According to Mark
Lees, Ph.D. and founder
of Mark Lees Skin Care,
“Everything we think of as
aging the skin is related to
inflammation and, therefore, free radicals”.
To fight oxidation and
free radical damage you
need antioxidants. We get
most of our antioxidants
from food.
Eating a diet rich in
fresh fruits and vegetables
is defense number one.
The science of skin care
has advanced so much in
recent years and we now
have available real topical products that can be
absorbed into the dermis
(skin) and actually target
free radical damage.
New products like peptides and the old stand
by alpha hydroxyl acids
(AHA’s) work to reverse
age damage, antioxidant
skin care works to pre-
vent it before it happens.
My advice for improving
skin and slowing down the
aging cycle is three-fold.
First, live a healthy life –
healthy diet, high in fresh
fruits and veggies, lots of
water and enough sleep.
Use alcohol in moderation, avoid cigarette smoke
and too much sun and get
exercise to fight stress.
Second, invest in yourself by getting regular
facials from a skin care
professional. Third, use
quality skin care products
that capitalize on today’s
modern science. Use products that contain peptides
to reverse skin damage
Eliminate Fine
Lines and Wrinkles

and are antioxidant rich to
prevent further damage.
Your body and your
skin are with you for life.
Take good care of them
and you’ll never regret it.

Getting To The Heart Of The Matter
Healthy Living
By Frank Miesse, Ph.D.
The shocking truth
about heart disease is that
nearly 2,600 Americans
die daily from it, and another 60 million have been
diagnosed cardiovascular
disorders. Bearing these
grim statistics in mind, it
is time we take every step
possible to strengthen and
protect our hearts.
Hawthorn has been
used to treat conditions including angina, chest pain,
irregular heartbeat, hypertension, weakness of the
heart muscle, rapid heart
rate, and thickening of the
arteries caused by cholesterol or fatty deposits.
Hawthorn improves blood
flow and oxygen supply to
the heart and even protects
agains the development of
atherosclerosis.
Ginkgo Biloba has
been the topic of over 400
scientific studies, and research has found that it has
an outstanding ability to
aid circulatory problems.
It strengthens and tones the
blood vessels, improves
circulation, and promotes
proper oxygen usage.
Red Clover contains
isoflavones which can improve the elasticity of large
arteries, particularly in the
case of postmenopausal
women. Because of this,
it aids in preventing hypertension and causes the left
ventricle to work harder
and be strengthened.
Capsicum is an excellent antioxidant and has
been used to improve
heart muscle blood supply.
It reduces the risk of atherosclerosis by decreasing
cholesterol and triglycerides.
Elevated homocysteine
levels in the blood are responsible for many cardiovascular problems and the
onset of heart attack.. The
B-Vitamin family (including Folic Acid, B6, and
B12) protects the heart by
decreasing blood homocysteine levels. Supplementing your diet with
Choline Bitartrate can directly reduce your chance
of heart attack by lowering
homocysteine.
Taurine, an amino acid,
is widely used in Japan to
treat heart disease because
it helps to regulate the
heartbeat and promotes
the pumping action of the
heart. It is very beneficial
for individuals who have
congestive heart failure.
Your heart is a small
muscle with a big job.
Keep it working properly
by using the Natural Alternatives.

House. Jimmy used to ride with the Kentucky Riders Association on their poker runs. Due to some
serious health issues he no longer can ride.
We contacted Charles Mathew and he was willing to take Jimmy for a ride in his sidecar. Jimmy,
more than ready to go when Charles came to pick
him up, was decked out in his leather vest and bandana. The weather was beautiful and Jimmy and
Charlie both had a great time.
Thank you to Chaplain Steve for sharing this opportunity with us and for Charlie making it happen.

Curtis House
Villa Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center would like to congratulate
Curtis on his graduation from our Homeward Bound Program!
Curtis was admitted to Villa after spending time in the hospital related to heart
problems. When he arrived, he was unable to walk more than 10 feet without
assistance and had decreased upper extremity strength. While at Villa, Curtis
received physical and occupational therapy for strengthening, range of motion and
increasing balance. He also received speech therapy for unresolved swallowing
difficulties.
Curtis was discharged home after his therapy was completed. At discharge, his
upper extremity strength and swallowing difficulties had improved and he was
able to walk 400 feet with a wheeled walker and minimal assistance.
He had this to say about his stay at Villa, “ Everything was great!”
Congratulations Curtis!!

Good Parenting Is Beyond Scientific Explanation
FOCUS ON
THE FAMILY
Dr. James Dobson
QUESTION:
What
does behavioral research
tell us about the best way
to raise children? Have
scientific studies spelled
out what works and what
doesn’t, especially regarding how to discipline
properly?
DR. DOBSON: My
answer may sound like
heresy coming from a man
who spent ten years of his
life as a professor of pediatrics, responsible for medical
and behavioral research, but
I don’t believe the scientific
community is capable of determining the best parenting
techniques. There have been
some worthwhile studies, to
be sure, but the subject of
discipline almost defies definitive investigation.
Why? Because the only
way to study this topic scientifically would be to place
newborns randomly in “permissive” vs. “disciplined”
families and then keep them
under close observation for
ten or fifteen years. Since it
is impossible to do that, researchers have tried to tease
out information where they
could find it. But family relationships are so multidimensional and complicated
that they almost defy rigorous scrutiny. Indeed, most
of the studies reported in the
literature are scientifically
useless.
For example, the late
Dr. David Larson, psychiatrist and a researcher at
the National Institutes of
Health, reviewed 132 articles in professional journals
that purported to investigate
the long-term consequences
of corporal punishment. He
found most of them flawed
in design. Ninety percent of
the studies failed to distinguish between good homes
where spanking was administered by loving parents,
and those bordering on (or
actually inflicting) child
abuse. This distinction is
critical for obvious reasons.
Dr. Larson concluded that
the findings were invalidated by this failure to consider
the overall health of family
relationships.
To repeat, the consequences of various approaches to parental discipline appear to be beyond
the reach of social research.
It is simply not possible to
study this complex subject
scientifically without warping families to set up the research design. Even if such
studies were conducted, the
researchers would be studying contrived families -- not
typical parent-child relationships.
_______________
QUESTION: My wife
and I are keenly aware of
how difficult it is to be good
parents, and at times, we
feel very inadequate to do
the job. How does a mom or
dad know what’s best for a
child from day to day?
DR. DOBSON: The
most dedicated parents go
through times when they
fear they aren’t responding
properly to their children.
They wonder if they’re
overreacting or underreacting, being too strict or too
A GLOBAL EDUCATION EVENT:
Dharma’s Significance in Hindu Traditions
The Global Education
and Peace Network invites
you to come hear Anjana
Prasad speak on “Dharma
and its Significance in
Hindu Traditions” at 6:30
p.m. Thursday, July 15, in
Room 105 of the Shouvlin
Center at Wittenberg University. Within the Hindu
beliefs, Dharma transcends
time, place and culture and
its applications becomes a
recognizable reality. The
true essence of Hinduism
is in the awareness of oneself in relation to Dharma.
“Hindu folklore and
interpretation of the two
great epics -- Ramayan
and Mahabharath are one
of the most fascinating
subjects”, says Anjana
Prasad the Sunday School
teacher at Hindu School
of Springfield. In addition to her involvement
with Sunday school for 13
years, Anjana has been coordinating cultural events
bringing the members
of the Springfield Hindu
Community together in
celebration. Whether it
is at Sunday School with
young learners or at public
events with mature audience, Anjana uses anecdotes and excerpts, to communicate about “Dharma”
(righteousness)
which
is regarded as the moral
compass in the Hindu Way
of Life. Anjana, her husband Dr. Shiva Prasad and
their two sons Rahul and
Rohan live in Bellefontaine. Exploring various
cultures and understanding the complex political
structures of the world is
another passion for Anjana while she coaches the
students of Bellefontaine
City Schools for debating

Beware: Hidden Risk For Eye Injuries At Home
(NAPSI)-Nearly 1.5
million eye injuries in the
United States occur annually in the home, despite
the fact that 90 percent
of these injuries could be
prevented by using protective eyewear. Eye injuries
most often occur when
lenient. They suspect that
they’re making major mistakes that will haunt them
later on. Fortunately, parents don’t have to do everything right. We all make
thousands of little mistakes
-- and a few big ones -- that
we wish we could reverse.
But somehow, most kids
roll with these blunders and
come out just fine anyway.
Let me give you what
I consider to be the key to
good parenting. It is to learn
how to get behind the eyes
of your child, seeing what
he sees and feeling what
he feels. When you know
his frame of mind, your response becomes obvious.
For example, when he’s
lonely, he needs your company. When he’s defiant, he
needs your help in controlling impulses. When he’s
afraid, he needs the security
of your embrace. When he’s
happy, he needs to share his
vironment. Consider individual therapy, speaking
to a minister or attending group meetings such
as Al-Anon, Alateen and
ACOA (Adult Children of
Alcoholics).
By sharing your experiences, learning new truths
and embracing the want of
a better life you can help
stop to this legacy of pain
for yourself and for generations to come.
Social Security Administration
Q&A
Coaching And A Great Playbook Equal Success
In Football And Retirement Planning
You only need to look at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl
winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to understand how
the secret to a successful football season can depend on a savvy
quarterback and great play calling.
The same is true for a successful retirement – except that you
are the quarterback and you also call the plays — for example,
when to retire and how much to save.
Even a Super Bowl winning quarterback can tell you that
the most talented quarterback can’t rack up a Super Bowl winning performance without good coaching and a playbook. Social Security understands that the same is true when it comes to
retirement planning. While you will have to call your own financial plays, we can help you decide what ‘play options’ might be
successful in any given situation.
For example, how much can you expect to get from Social
Security? How much more could you get if you worked a year
longer? Two years? What about your spouse, if you are married? And how much should you be saving in addition to your
expected Social Security benefits?
All of these questions can be answered simply by visiting
our Social Security website at www.socialsecurity.gov. It’s like
training camp for financial planning. There you will find several
financial planning tools, including our new, easy-to-use Retirement Estimator. You can use it to get quick retirement estimates
based upon your own earnings record.
All you have to do is provide some very basic information
about yourself – your name, Social Security number, date and
place of birth, your mother’s maiden name, and your last year’s
earnings. The Retirement Estimator will then create Social Security benefit estimates, based on your entire career earnings
record.
The Estimator shows what you would receive in Social Security benefits if you retired at age 62, what you would receive
at your full retirement age and what you would receive if you
worked until age 70.
Interested in other play options, such as what would happen
if you made more money in the future? Or if you want to stop
work at a different age than the three we show you? You can
try out alternate game plans using the screens on the Retirement
Estimator page, in case you change your mind about your initial
retirement plans.
Remember what one of football’s most accomplished and
respected coaches, Vince Lombardi, said: “There’s only one way
to succeed in anything, and that is to give it everything.” So give
everything you have to developing the playbook for your retirement. And the best place to begin your game plan for a successful retirement is at www.socialsecurity.gov.

The month of June, 2010
for the local SpringfieldClark County, Ohio area
was mostly warm and
wet. The high temperatures during the last third
of the month rose above
90 degrees with high humididities which cased the
heat indexes to rise above
100 degrees. Two strong
thunderstorms with gusty
winds occurred during the
middle and the end of the
month.
The 4th of July weekend
was hot and dry followed
by warm and humid conditions for the post holiday
period.
--------------------------The National Weather
Service extended forecast
maps for the period of July
the 7th through the 15th,
2010 is predicting both
near normal temperatures
and rainfall. The extended
forecast for the month of
July, 2010 also predicts
near normal temperatures
and rainfall.
--------------------------The period should
begin on Wednesday and
Thursday on the western
side of a high pressure area
bringing in fair skies, dry
conditions and seasonal
temperatures with highs in
the middle to the upper 80s
and lows in the upper 60s.
FRrday could see a weak
cold frontal passage with
scattered rain and thunderstorms. Fair weather, dry
conditions, and seasonal
temperatures should then
return for the weekend and
possibly continue into the
middle of the next week.
---------------------------My weather records for
the period of July the 7th
through the 14th, 1969
through 2009 shows a high
temperature of a warm 98
degrees recorded on three
dates, the lowest temperature was a cool 50 degrees
recorded July the july the
8th, 1988. The average
high temperature is 85 degrees with an average low
of 64 degrees for an average of 74.5 degrees. THe
greatest rain total is 2.51
