Winter/Spring 2012 The Community Education Advisory Council works with the Community Education Director and Coordinator to offer a variety of classes of interest to the people of all ages throughout the district. Pre-registration is a necessity! Registration is not complete unless accompanied by payment. For each class that you are registering for, write a check payable to Springfield Community Education. Classes may be cancelled because of lack of enrollment. In this case, you will be notified and your check returned to you. If class is cancelled because of inclement weather you will be notified prior to the class starting time and the class will be rescheduled at a later date. Springfield Community Education is continually looking for individuals who are willing to share their skills, hobbies, and talents with others. If you, or know someone who might be interested in instructing a class, please contact the Community Education Coordinator at 507-723-4283. This program is offered to adults ages 16 and older, not in school. These area classes for adults who did not graduate and want to earn a certificate equal to a high school diploma. Subject areas include science, social studies, reading, writing skills and math. Individuals will work at their own pace and in the areas and goals of their choosing. The classes are free of charge and held at the school in the evenings through out the school year. Contact Peggy Larson at 723-4288 for more information. “55 Alive” Defensive Driving These courses are for people age 55 and older who can receive a discount on their auto insurance by completing the course. First time students must take an eight-hour course, but repeat students can take a four-hour refresher course to qualify for the discount. Make check payable to AARP Registration Deadline: Mon., April 30, 2012 Learn more about Excel! ® The Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging , Inc. will be offering a ―Senior Surf Day‖ class on Thurs. Feb. 9, 2012 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Springfield Elem. School, Elem. Computer Lab. Senior Surf Day is a FREE class for older adults who would like to learn the basics of operating a computer. You must pre-register to attend and class size is limited. Registration deadline is Thurs., Feb. 2, 2012. This class will include topics such as working with formulas and functions, formatting a worksheet and working with charts. Your questions will also be answered! It will be taught by Laura Ombaye, HS Business Instructor on Mondays, March 19 and March 26, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at SPS, Room B201. Cost is $10 for both sessions. Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites, created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum, is an exciting, hands-on learning opportunity geared toward children ages 2 – 8. Children will fall in love with the beloved childhood books while building valuable early literacy skills. Hosted by the Redwood Area ECI and ECFE at the Redwood Falls Public Library from February 4 – May 26, 2012, Saturday hours are: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This is a FREE event! TwinsFest 2012 Trip! TwinsFest 2012 at the H.H.H. Metrodome will feature many new and returning attractions, featuring fun for the whole family. More than 60 current, former and future Twins players are expected to appear throughout the course of the weekend. Autograph stations with current and former Twins players Photo opportunities with current and former players The Upper Midwest's largest baseball card show and collectibles extravaganza with dealers buying and selling A baseball skills area featuring speed pitch, MLB yard Page 2 ball, batting cages and more! Motor coach bus leaves west side of Springfield Public School at 9 am, returns approximately at 6 pm. Cost for bus: $24/person. (Tickets to the event will be purchased on your own upon arrival at Twinsfest. Adults $15/person and children under 14 are $8/child.) Register by Monday, Jan. 23 by sending a check for the bus cost only. A minimum number is needed for this trip to be held. Students must have an adult chaperone. Community Education Estate Planning 101 covers the basics everyone should know about estate planning. Certified Elder Law Attorney, Hannon T. Ford will teach the class about Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives or Living Wills and more. This class will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Springfield Public School, Science Room. This class is FREE, but pre-registration is necessary by Tues., April 17, 2012. Advanced Estate Planning covers the strategies that estate planning attorneys use to reduce taxes for larger estates. Estate Planning Attorney, Hannon T. Ford will answer you estate planning questions on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 6:308 pm at Springfield Public School, Science room. This class is FREE, but preregistration is necessary by Tues., April 24, 2012. Group Guitar Lessons These five sessions, for adults, will cover the basics of guitar using the Mel Bay Series music book (book included). Cindee Schewe, who has 24 years experience teaching vocals and guitar, will focus on easy beginner music by adding simple rhythm, basic note reading, and chord structure. If you’ve often thought about getting out that old guitar in the closet and learning something new, this is a very economical way to do it! In addition, it’s a ton of fun! Mondays, February 6, 13, 27, March 5 & 19 from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. in the SPS, Media Center. Cost is $25.00. Class is limited to 10 people. Register by: Monday, January 30, 2012. Container Gardening Even the smallest patio or porch can boast a garden of flowers in containers. The container gardener is limited only by his imagination! Bring your own planter or purchase one at class and create your own planting. your finished container planting cared for by the greenhouse for several days. Class will be held at Sunrise Gardening Greenhouse, rural Comfrey by Mo Therkilsen. Thurs., May 3, 2012 at 7 pm. Cost: $6.00 + supplies. Register by Monday, April 30, 2012. Industrial Maintenance Classes Classes are FREE and start in January in Granite Falls. They will focus on the fundamental skills needed for entry-level positions in the Manufacturing and Renewable Energy industries. Classes will be 4 days per week / 12 weeks – 4 or more hours per day. A Reading and Math assessment must be taken at a local Adult Basic Education office in order to qualify. Priority will be given to those willing to complete all courses. Herb Container & Companion Planting The rewards of growing herbs are far greater than with other plants. Other plants in the garden are mostly planted for their decorative value. Herbs, on the other hand, can also be used for a myriad of other purposes that stretch from flavoring your food to curing your flu to ridding your home of insects. Thurs., May 10, 2012 at 7 pm. Water Fitness Springfield Community Education and the Springfield Medical Center-Mayo Health System and Microtel Inn and Suites are teaming together to offer Water Fitness Classes. Attend class when you can! Classes will be held: Mon. from 6:157:15 pm OR Tues. from 9-10 AM Cost: $40.00/10 classes Winter/Spring 2012 Many initiatives are offered through Brown County Area United Way. One of the long standing programs has been the Youth Activities Scholarship Program. Young people ages 418 whose family income is insufficient to meet the activity and equipment fees, are eligible. Students in grades 3-6 will learn basic cooking skills and prepare simple, delicious recipes. All classes are taught by Lucy Potter and will be held in the SPS, Family Consumer Science Room from 1-3 pm. (Please note, NEW time!) Cost is $5.50/class OR $16.50 for all classes. Register early! When: Sat., Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 31 & April 28, 2012 Registration Deadline: Register one week before each class. “Once a Month” Cooking This class will help you get organized and provide you with tips and tricks to avoid time and money ―wasters.‖ By the end of this class you will be armed with a process to create easy shopping lists and many wonderful freezer meals. Participants will receive 25 recipes and have ongoing e-mail contact with Cindy Haugland, professional organizer and founder of Tidy Tightwads, should you have questions. C123. Cost: $20.00/person. Register by: Monday, April 16, 2012. ECFE and Learning Readiness Classes are sponsored by the Springfield Public School and Community Education. Classes are held late afternoons and evenings in the elementary classrooms. The Early Childhood teacher will design crafts, activities, learning games, stories, songs, circle time, etc., which promote social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth. Parents(s) attend these classes with their children. During the last half of each class session, the parent(s) attend an educational session and discussion group, facilitated by the Parent Educator.
