Annual Report - Lutheran Community Services Northwest
Year of the Refugee 2016 Report to the Community Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Our Mission Lutheran Community Services Northwest partners with individuals, families and communities for health, justice and hope. Table of Contents Pages 4- 5 Year of the Refugee Page 6 Across Our Agency Page 7 Elise and Marigold Page 8 LCSNW Leadership Page 9 Financials Pages 10-19 Donor Recognition About the Cover Pictured on the cover and this page are refugees who live and work in Oregon and Washington. They all have a connection to LCS Northwest, as they were resettled by us, are part of one of our refugee programs, were in our foster care program, or work for us. They come from Afghanistan, Burma, Iraq, Somalia and Syria. They are members of our LCS family. Page 2 LCS Northwest Annual Report Diversity is Our Strength Dear Friends, We celebrate our diversity. With more than 100 programs, our work to strengthen communities and to help people heal and grow is diverse. The people we work with and the people we employ are just as diverse. From Spokane to Seattle to Portland to Klamath Falls, we partner with seniors, children, youth, families in crisis, people battling addiction, asylum seekers, the homeless, people healing from traumatic experiences and many more. I’d like to highlight some of our work: zz We’re partnering with more families and children. In Washington, our Wraparound programs in the Tri-Cities are growing quickly, and we’re expanding Wraparound to Spokane. We opened a new family center in Arlington, WA in response to the Oso mudslide two years ago. A Blessing for You May God bless us with a restless discomfort about easy answers, half-truths and superficial relationships, so that we may seek truth boldly and love wholeheartedly. May God bless us with holy anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may work for justice, freedom and peace. May God bless us with tears to shed with and for those who suffer from pain, rejection, hunger, grief or war, so that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and turn their pain into joy. May God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we really can make a difference in this world, so that we are able, with God’s grace and help, to do what others claim cannot be done, to bring justice and kindness to all, to heal, serve, love and reconcile. zz In Oregon, we’re working with families to make generational changes at our “A Family Place” Relief Nurseries in Yamhill County. We’re helping the homeless in Central Oregon. In Klamath Falls and Prineville, as well as Boise, ID we work in schools to help kids make better choices. zz We’re fighting human trafficking in Spokane. We’re raising awareness about a real problem in the Northwest and working with the community and law enforcement to do something about it. zz Our Multicultural Community Services continue to expand. Our refugee resettlement efforts have grown in the Portland-Vancouver and TacomaSeattle areas. zz In Tacoma, we’re doing more for seniors with dementia. We just started Memory Cafes, adding to our successful Zoo Walks. You make our work possible. Thank you for supporting our agency. I will end with a Catholic Blessing (left) I shared at our recent fundraising brunches. It captures what we’re about. David Duea President and CEO Amen. The governors of Oregon and Washington also said that Syrian refugees would be welcomed in their states. Nearly every day last year, we looked at pictures of refugees fleeing Syria. Most showed scared faces of people clinging to life. Then one night last November, terrorists attacked Paris killing more than 100 people. We read the news with great sadness. The topics of refugees and terrorists became intertwined. People’s compassion turned to fear. Refugees became a topic of debate and politics. Some presidential candidates and many governors said refugees are not welcome. At Lutheran Community Services Northwest, we welcome refugees to the Pacific Northwest. That is one of the fundamental things we’ve done for 40 years. We resettle newly-arrived refugees, help them learn basic living skills, and work with them on mental health issues. well into the future. We will welcome Christians, Muslims and refugees of all faiths. After all, we are all God’s children. We hear people’s concerns and understand their safety fears. We are confident in our country’s system that handpicks refugees who resettle here. Refugees go through multiple layers of security checks, including rigorous security screenings that involve the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Department of Defense and multiple intelligence agencies. As a part of a larger community of Lutherans, we feel it is essential to provide opportunities to each refugee in need. If the shoe was on the other foot, if we were facing these uncertain circumstances, we would hope for the same grace and the same belief in humanity that we offer at LCS Northwest. We stand with refugees, as equals, and will help them as our own. After partnering with more than 35,000 refugees, we’ve learned that they strengthen our communities, improve our economy, and diversify our culture. They are people who need a new country to call home. We facilitate that process. Refugees are people fleeing horrific conditions. Listening to their stories is difficult, but we open our doors and our hearts to them. We will continue to welcome and resettle Syrian and other refugees in the Pacific Northwest Page 4 LCS Northwest Annual Report Syrian Family Finds Peace in Portland He’s one of the most patriotic people you will meet. They flew to Chicago, spent a night, and went on to Portland. Arab says he loves how Portland is clean and organized. He rarely stops smiling. His wife says that their children look and feel so different now. They no longer fear for their lives when they walk on the streets. “I’m starting life here and I’m not looking back,” Arab said. The family needs to heal both emotionally and physically. Despite a rough life, they all smile and are thankful for a new start. “I want to teach my kids to love the flag so they love their country,” Arab said. Arab works hard – usually five 10-hour shifts a week at a manufacturing plant in Beaverton. He wants to spend more time with his family, learn English, and get a driver’s license. His new friend and translator, Nabil Katcho, reminds him that learning takes time. “He is ready to give up on everything that is his past,” the translator said for Arab. When you hear about his past, it’s easy to understand why. Arab was a carpet retailer for 10 years in Aleppo, Syria, when the civil war broke out in March, 2011. Business dried up quickly, food and water became scarce, and living was suddenly dangerous. Many bad people were making and carrying out threats. Within one month’s time, Arab’s family was devastated. His brother was shot and killed going to work as an engineer. His father was murdered collecting his pension check. Arab had to support his family, so he left his wife and two kids with other family members and made his way to Istanbul. He found employment with a tailoring business, where he ate, slept and worked. He wasn’t treated well, but he sent money home to his family. Then Arab found out his wife was pregnant with their third child. With conditions getting worse in Syria, he hired smugglers to bring the family to Istanbul. Life in Istanbul was difficult. The only housing they could find was a small basement apartment that filled with water every time it rained. Many nights the kids went to bed hungry. Their extended family was split up into different countries – some migrated to Greece and others resettled in Germany. There was no school for the oldest Health Justice Hope Page 5 Across Our Agency Brief highlights from our major offices in Washington, Oregon and Idaho Vicki McConnachie (left) and L.V. VanBlaricom volunteer at the Diaper Bank for our A Family Place Relief Nursery in McMinnville. They also promote A Family Place in the community and raise money for it. Beaverton Our new client-friendly office space officially opened in August 2015. Our staff diversity increased, as we now have more therapists and case managers in the Culturally Specific Mental Health program. We added a new program - Immigration Counseling and Advocacy Program (ICAP). Boise It’s been an incredible year with new staff, new schools and a wonderful opportunity to partner with Dove Mission Initiative’s African refugee after-school project. Central Oregon After a year of negotiating, we are close to buying the building where we have an office in Prineville. We earned the funding for two programs that are scheduled to start in 2016 – Rental Assistance and Jail Diversion. Klamath Falls Despite a persistently tough area economy and a significant decrease in contract revenues in 2015, we redefined, reinvigorated and rebalanced our services and staff. Sometimes it’s not about growth, but about bringing grace and integrity to our mission of service and community partnership. In October, we officially opened our new Arlington Community Resource Center. Developed in response to the SR 530 Mudslide in March 2014 near Oso, WA, the Center was formed through a partnership of organizations dedicated to bringing hope and healing to the Stillaguamish Valley after the tragedy. Portland/Vancouver Our Refugee Resettlement efforts grew last year, especially in the Tacoma/Seattle areas. Even with a lack of affordable housing and the political noise about refugees, we successfully resettled 529 refugees in Portland, 138 in Vancouver and 289 in Tacoma/Seattle. South Puget Sound We’re doing more for people with dementia and their caregivers. Attendance at our Early Stage Memory Loss Zoo Walk at Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma continues to grow. We teamed with Elmer’s Restaurant in Tacoma to start Memory Cafes in Tacoma in 2016. Memory Cafes are a monthly meeting where people at all stages of dementia and their caregivers can share a meal and social opportunities. Spokane Planning is finished and we received the green light to start the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor program in the summer of 2016. A new Wraparound with Intensive Services (WISe) program for at-risk youth will also start in 2016. Tri-Cities We had an unprecedented year of growth. We’ve more than doubled our physical space to accommodate expansion of our WISe program, and we expect the same rate of expansion next year. Yamhill County After years of growing programs, our focus turned to building and deepening ties to the community. We added a volunteer coordinator and events manager, along with investing in internal and external communications to strengthen our roots in the community. North Puget Sound Workers from Nordstrom’s corporate office spent a day volunteering at LCS Northwest in SeaTac. They refurbished garden beds for our Family Center’s community gardens. International Counseling and Community Services (ICCS) opened a second location in Kent last year. Now with offices in SeaTac and Kent, ICCS has more capacity and is closer to where refugee clients live. Page 6 LCS Northwest Annual Report Elise and Marigold: LCS Northwest Teamwork Counseling is one of our primary services at LCS Northwest. One of our most unique counseling teams is Elise Hutchison in Spokane and her guide dog, Marigold. Marigold is the only Golden Retriever working at LCS Northwest. Hutchison is legally blind, and Marigold became her guide dog in 2015. It turns out that Marigold helps her with her job as a therapist and case manager. Clients relax more with Marigold around. “One of my clients was having a tough time really opening up,” Hutchinson said. “Marigold went and sat with him, and the boy started sharing things with me. She helped us make progress.” It’s easy to tell which job Marigold is doing. If her harness is on, she’s a guide dog, and you leave Marigold alone. When the harness is off, she’s a lovable pup who is full of energy and loves to play with Hutchison’s pet dog, Primrose. “There are times when therapists have rough days and they’ll stop by and ask if they can give Marigold a hug,” Hutchison said. “They leave feeling relaxed and ready to tackle the next big thing on their plate.” Hutchison has worked in the Spokane office since 2013. She earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology in the spring of 2015. “It’s an honor and a privilege to work with people who are trying to build up resilience to get through some of the hardest moments in their lives,” Hutchison said. The therapist is not deterred by her lack of vision. Instead of reading body language and facial expressions, Hutchison pays close attention to rate of speech and pitch changes. “With some people I can build instant rapport because they see a person who has overcome barriers, and it gives them a sense they can do the same,” Hutchison said. “What they’ve been through, I can’t even imagine.” Behavioral Health Behavioral Health Child Welfare Family & Community Support Aging and Independent Living Services Immigration & Refugee Services Behavioral Health: Our Largest Service Behavioral Health is one of LCS Northwest’s primary services, making up 41 percent of our overall services. Behavioral Health includes a variety of counseling services at most locations. Health Justice Hope 2015 SAFeT Counseling Clients Spokane’s Sexual Assault and Family Trauma (SAFeT) program is one of our Behavioral Health programs. SAFeT services for trauma survivors include advocacy, counseling, crisis services and education. In 2015, 98 percent of SAFeT counseling clients reported that they were doing better after receiving services. The statements have been prepared in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America and, as such, include amounts based on informed estimates and judgments of management. Financial information elsewhere in this annual report is consistent with the financial statements. LCSNW maintains internal control over financial reporting and over safeguarding of assets against unauthorized acquisition, use or disposition, which is designed to provide reasonable assurance to LCSNW’s management and Board of Directors regarding the preparation and reliability of financial statements, and the safeguarding of assets. Internal control includes a documented organizational structure, a division of responsibility, and established policies and procedures, including a code of conduct, to foster a strong ethical climate. There are inherent limitations in the effectiveness of any system of internal control, including the possibility of human error and the circumvention or overriding of controls. Accordingly, even the most effective system of internal control can provide only reasonable assurance with respect to financial statement preparation and the safeguarding of assets. Furthermore, the effectiveness of internal control can change with circumstances. My deceased husband, Val, believed it was very important to share our blessings with those less fortunate. I know, and my whole family knows, how important it is to share what we can with others. We believe the Lord is honored through the ministry of Lutheran Community Services Northwest because he called us to do this kind of work.” – Alice Danielson Alice Danielson passed away last year at 99 years old. Alice and her husband, Val, were faithful and generous supporters of our social ministry from 1994 to 2015. She was a woman who lived the Christian faith fully. Her positive spirit, graciousness and wonderful smile blessed all who knew her. She was a joy to know. Page 19 9 Page Non-profit Org.
