A native of California, Dr. Garcia completed her undergraduate degree at Stanford
University, and her dental training at the University of Pacific in San Francisco. After
graduating dental school, she completed a 1-year residency in Advanced Education in
Dentistry through the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she refined her skills
and learned specialty procedures.
As an active member of the Pima Dental Study Club, Arizona Dental Society, and the
American Dental Association, Dr. Garcia receives regular hands-on training in order to stay

Brian and Karen Gatchell, owners of Tucson Store Fixtures, and their staff have spent
years getting to know mineral dealers and collectors from around the world. Brian, a

It seems that even kids these days can’t settle down with school work load and

Recognizing signs of stress in our pets and providing options to reduce stressors will
result in longer, healthier lives for our furry friends. Recent studies have indicated that
stress is linked directly to inflammatory mediator release, immune system activation,
changes in mood and pathologic pain.
Watch For the Signs
Dogs will commonly display high stress levels by several mechanisms such as yawning,
teeth chattering, sweaty paws, dilated pupils, lip licking and vocalization. Cats are
known to display certain stress-related sickness behaviors such as hiding, somnolence,
reduced eating and drinking, elimination outside of the litter box and decreased coat
care (grooming).
The effects of stress can be even more subtle. Cortisol, a hormone released in the body
during periods of stress, has been shown to increase one’s appetite. Prolonged stress
may then result in obesity, which can produce further strain on our pets’ musculoskeletal
system (particularly the joints) and cardiovascular system. An increased appetite due to
stress can have a negative impact on the body by the poor-quality nutrition and a lack of
essential vitamins and minerals in many commercial pet foods.

Be Proactive in Minimizing Pet Stress
There are five basic categories of enrichment to help minimize stress in our pets. The
first is basic resources- providing the highest quality diet (with the addition of dietary
supplements based on your veterinarian’s recommendation), a clean and cool water source,
and a clean as well as safe option for eliminations (multiple litter boxes, secure yard, etc).
The next category needed for proper enrichment and stress reduction is environmental.
This includes giving cats a space to climb, scratch, rest and hide. For dogs, this may
mean feeding them through toys such as a Buster Cube or Roll-A-Treat ball, offering
both toys and chewing items, providing a sand box or other appropriate area for digging,

resolutions for an even greater 2012. We create action lists filled with lifestyle changes

Top Five Pet Resolutions
1.Stay Fit and Get Plenty of Exercise. Speaking for our canine family, we resolve to go
for more walks, at least once daily. Our feline friends hope to chase more mice, birds,
and lizards (real or store bought). Extra exercise will help to keep us fit, and stimulate
us physically and mentally.
2.Eat a Better Diet. With the growing number of healthful choices available for us these
days, we vow to improve our diet to increase our energy levels, vitality, and longevity.
3.Skip Some Treats. As delicious as they may be, most treats are loaded with calories,
fat, and sugar. They will not help us to keep fit and trim in the new year, but will
more likely make us hefty hounds and tubby tabbies. We will eat them sparingly and
encourage our humans to buy only nutritious treats.
4.Have More Fun. Being disciplined about our diets and exercise does provide
benefits. With all our extra energy and stamina, we want to have more fun! We will
rediscover old toys and ways to play with them, and enjoy all the new holiday toys we
are fortunate enough to have received. Extra playtime with our owners is what we hope
for too. Maybe we can help them with their resolutions to “have more fun”!
5. Share the Wealth. We know how lucky we are to be loved, provided for, and to live in

Here in Arizona, our warmer weather brings longer feline mating cycles, and with
those, a constant influx of kittens and cats to our local shelters. It’s simply nature at
work, but nature that requires balance in both education and assistance in controlling
the cat population while also offering quality to these little lives.
This fact is a daily reality at Pawsitively Cats, a newly incorporated non-profit, no-kill
cat shelter in Tucson, founded in July of 2010 by Sheryl Campbell. Sheryl has long been
devoted to making a difference for animals through public education and service, with
20 years experience in non-profit small business management, and (the last) five years
directly involved in cat rescue. She has seven years experience in TNR (trap-neuterrelease), having worked independently to trap, neuter and release over 40 cats.

An Organization With a Mission
Pawsitively Cats has a board of seven members who share a deep concern for the
welfare of all animals. The plight of growing numbers of abandoned and homeless cats
is what ignites their passion to protect and serve what has now become a feline family
numbering in the hundreds. Pawsitively Cats’ daily mission is to provide quality shelter
for cats, and to educate the public on the value of TNR and the importance of spaying
and neutering in reducing the number of homeless cats on the streets of Tucson.
In Dire Need of Public Support
Many people often do not know what to do if they find strays, litters of homeless or
abandoned cats, or even if they simply no longer want or can keep their pet. There is
a high need for educating the public, but the need for providing quality shelter, food,
supplies, and medical services is even more critical. The high costs of staffing, care, and
maintenance are also an ongoing and often misunderstood challenge that requires a
unique resolve, especially in our faltering economy. While Sheryl and avid Pawsitively Cats
volunteer Susan Miller shared that they are always actively involved in fundraising, the
shelter and kitty tenants have never been more in need of our support.

play. Daily vigorous exercise for both cats
and dogs is essential to well-being.
The third type of enrichment is social
interaction, both with humans and other
pets. Dog parks are a good option for
some dogs, whereas individual play or
training sessions (such as flyball, agility
and tracking) are better for independent
or shy dogs. Some cats prefer toys that
simulate birds (feather on a wand), insects
(laser pointer) or mimic small rodents.
Audio-visual enrichment is also important
to stress reduction. The sound of a pet
owner’s voice, the radio or television and
access to a window view can be helpful.
Finally, olfactory enrichment is essential
to keep our pets’ minds stimulated.
For dogs, placing novel scents in the
environment (such as spices, herbs, or
even synthetic animal scents from a
hunting/sporting good store) is helpful.
Synthetic feline pheremones and catnip can
help provide hours of relaxation or play for
our feline friends.

Gina Murphy Darling is Mrs. Green. Gina
has been a successful businesswoman in
both for-profit and non-profit businesses.
Her mission is to help people get through
the maze of choices in their lives while
creating a sustainable world. Gina is
a New Jersey girl who was raised in a
wonderful and loving family. She is a
graduate of the University of Arizona and
a self-proclaimed rabid Wildcat fan.
Gina started out working in social services
for the government and then in the
private sector working for at-risk social
service programs. In 1992, she started
Parents And Children Together (PACT)
which later merged with Providence
Service Corporation. Gina then started her
own non-profit business. She eventually
found herself being pulled to help people
through the power of knowledge. She had
a completely “random but not so random”
thought to create a local radio talk show.

The rich brown of mesquite wood, with darker highlights, is ideal for furniture and
decorator pieces that will enhance virtually every room in the house, including the
patio. For instance, Borderlands has an array of mesquite cutting boards and mirror
frames, as well as larger furniture pieces.
The mesquite used in the furniture sold at Borderlands is all reclaimed from a series
of man-made reservoirs in Mexico. Baker has bought mesquite pieces from the same
shop in the state of Sonora for 13 years.
“In the springtime when the water level gets low in the lakes, they go out and lumber
their wood, then take it back to the shop,” Baker explains. “They don’t cut any live
wood. They claim what’s dead and found in the reservoirs.”

From that reclaimed wood come mesquite dining tables and chairs, living room
furniture, tables of all sorts, benches, buffets, cabinets, and wood for flooring. Many
items combine mesquite with iron or even turquoise highlights.

Remember last February? It was the beginning of the month when it happened: a big
hard freeze.
Think Ahead and Be Prepared
Rob Scott, owner of Handyman Connection, warns Southern Arizonans that it could
happen again, and it’s time to get prepared. Last year, water pipes froze and burst all
over town, Scott says.
“Everybody called at once, and when we went to buy supplies, everything was sold
out—insulation, replacement pipes, everything else,” he recalls. “It was a long time
before the inventory was back on the shelf.”
An ounce of prevention will enable homeowners to avoid dealing with a shortage of
supplies and delays in getting repairs. In fact, a little preventive maintenance now will get
you through the rest of the winter without any frozen pipes or—worse—burst pipes.
“Frozen pipes are one thing,” Scott says. “You can thaw them out. But once a pipe
bursts you’re talking about significant damage throughout the house.”
Don’t Wait ~ Do It Now
Scott emphasizes the need to take steps today, rather than waiting for a weather report
predicting a freeze. Doing it now will ensure that you can get the supplies you need
and do a careful job while the sun is shining. “Right now is the perfect time. We’ve
already had one freeze in late November. There’s sure to be more,” he says.
The first step is to wrap any irrigation valves and water pipes with insulation. The
hardware stores and home maintenance stores offer standard foam pipe insulation that

Disconnect outdoor hoses so water won’t freeze in them. Shut down your evaporative
cooler, and protect the water supply line to the cooler. Indoors, Scott advises, leave the
bathroom faucet slightly running. Just a little trickle will keep the water lines open.

My Local Home Show
Jeff Dalecke is an avid sportsman, conservationist, educator and owner of Dalecke
Carpentry Inc. His grandfather was a cabinet maker and his uncle is a cabinet maker,
so it’s in his blood. He was introduced to the trade at about 12 years of age when he
began working in his uncle’s cabinet shop in Ohio.
He attended the University of Arizona for an architecture degree for a year and a half,
but then ran out of money. So he figured he would build rather than draw buildings.
From the Ground Up
Jeff joined the carpenters union and enrolled in the carpenter’s apprenticeship
program. He learned pretty much every aspect of carpentry from concrete form work
to drywall, and from huge bridges to framing a small school house. He worked around
the southwest for years in the union. However, something kept drawing him to cabinet
construction. While he was in the union and working for other people, he would pick up
side jobs which eventually got bigger and bigger.

The Cabinet Guy Emerges
In 1999, Jeff formed Dalecke Carpentry Service. He started small with odd jobs here
and there, and focused mostly on cabinet installation and design. He soon got a
reputation as “the cabinet guy.” For the next few years, he installed cabinets for a few
local design studios in Tucson. The next natural step was to open a showroom.
On January 1, 2008, Dalecke Carpentry Service was changed to Dalecke Carpentry, Inc.
Jeff teamed up with Merillat cabinets to offer three great cabinet lines and started a
countertop division, which also fabricates custom beveled-edge laminate countertops.
He also opened a showroom on the northwest side of Tucson, where he works with

brighten the home. Then, have the local utility company help to identify all the ways
you can reduce the energy consumption in your home.

Food of Northern India
The food at Flavor of India is prepared in the traditional ways of northern India,
particularly from the region of Punjab, where the Singh family once resided.
Punjab is a state in the Northwestern part of the Republic of India, where the cuisine is
known for its diverse range of dishes and ingredients. North Indian curries usually have
distinctly thick, moderately spicy and creamy gravies. While the use of dried fruits and
nuts is fairly common even in everyday foods, dairy products like milk, cream, cottage
cheese, ghee and yogurt play an important role in both savory and sweet dishes.
Chicken, Lamb and Fish
A few common misconceptions about Indian food are that it is very spicy or is made
with just curry and lamb. At Flavor of India, there are many dishes, such as the Chicken
Masala served with garlic naan, both classic examples of Indian cuisine that can be
prepared at any level of spiciness.

are also available for private groups at dinner time. Chad’s also caters to groups up
to 200, says Sandi Herrington, who bought the restaurant eight years ago, with her
husband, Shaun.
Whether for a special Valentine’s Day dinner, a happy hour after work, or a group
gathering, Chad’s guarantees an abundant menu and a great place to take visitors for
some Western atmosphere.
Chad’s prides itself on offering “the best customer service that we can humanly provide
and the best quality of food,” Sandi Herrington says. Chad’s is open for lunch from 11
to 4 p.m. every day and for dinner beginning at 4 p.m. The restaurant offers happy
