The following students were recognized at the March Town Meeting: Luke Johnson Sam Bistline Kailee Cullinan Isaac Lee Tate Jernigan Jacob Adams Tyler Weinstein Rachel Varin Laine Waters Andrea Mendoza Luke Laurie Dee Connick Maleah Brown Pearson Wallace Leah Baldwin Reid Sinclair Brendon Lowiteng Joshua Brown Jacob Mooney Maeve McMahon Melissa Rimza Carly Gray Andy Howe Darcel Xochihua Ethan Lloyd Abigail McGee Noel Brown Tanner Hammarstrom Tanner Radnothy Martin Palmenberg Shae Sonderer Kyle Foss Jarrett Jernigan Early this month six teachers, Stephanie Streeter and I attended an informational workshop on Singapore Math. It is different from the way math is taught in the U.S. in many respects. More time is spent on each topic with a greater emphasis on mastery. There are more multi-step problems, and problem solving is one of the key components of the curriculum. Mental math techniques are used to promote understanding. We found this very interesting and we are planning to have a consultant come make a presentation to our K-2 teachers on March 25th. We have had many special events in the past few weeks. Students in grades three through six were thrilled to be visited by author O. Penn Coughin (play on words). He wrote a book of scary stories titled They’re Coming for You. His use of many different voices and sound effects made him a very entertaining storyteller. The Talent Show was a success and great fun for the performers and the audience. The entire school was treated to a character education assembly presented by Jonnie and Brookie. These young teen singers are associated with Radio Disney. We have been very busy planning and preparing for the Art Show. More professional artists have donated pieces for the silent auction than did last year. The level of interest and enthusiasm has increased and staff and students are very excited. The Arizona Daily Star sent a reporter out on March the 18th to write about some of the activities and they plan to be here on the night of the 25th. The PTG Spellathon raised $22,650 before expenses and we have had our first Pancake Breakfast to celebrate. This fundraiser is always such a tremendous success. On March 30 we will begin AIMS and Terra Nova testing. We try to create the best test taking atmosphere possible by maintaining a quiet campus, testing in the morning hours, having nutritious snacks and being well planned. The teachers, some instructional aides and I have all been trained by Mrs. Rostash on the procedures to be followed. We are ready, and I believe we will do well.
