The movement that began over a year ago continues to expand its influence and build momentum while representing diverse constituencies under this year’s theme of unity. The day provided a testimony to our opportunity to join hands in bringing down racial barriers, addressing poverty, loving the poor, serving our fellow citizens, and transforming our cities with the Gospel. It represented a visual actualization of our overarching theme (unity) and our process of working together. I want to thank you for your participation in this gospel movement. Please continue to spread the good news about what God is doing through Movement Day. Something special and dynamic is taking place through each of us who have committed to work together. We hope that you will continue to support our transformational work throughout the year and gather together again early in 2016. Through our united prayers, faith, and work, our cities are improving, and our Lord is being magnified. I love you all. With confidence in Him, Jon Edmonds, Executive Director Movement Day Greater Dallas 3 MDGD Facts Movement Day: Greater Dallas The American context: • The number of Americans who say they have “no religion” has nearly doubled since 1990 to more than 15%. The number who call themselves “atheist” or “agnostic” has quadrupled and is now almost twice the number of Episcopalians in our country. • The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life recently released their “U.S. Religious Landscape Survey.” Among its findings: More than one-quarter of American adults (28%) have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion or no religion at all. Among Americans ages 18-29, one in four say they are not affiliated with any religion. The Greater Dallas context: • Education: 42% of third graders in Dallas County are reading at or above grade level. Only 4% of high school seniors read at a 12th grade standard. Only 1% compete in mathematics at a 12th grade standard. • Hunger: The number of North Texans seeking help from food pantries or soup kitchens each week has risen 80 percent since 2006, to 64,600 a week. Nearly half are children. Approximately 20% of Dallas children live with “food insecurity.” • Financial stability: 29.3% of children in Dallas County, more than 190,000 children total, live in families below the federal income poverty level. Across nine counties of North Texas, the number rises to more than 360,000. • Immigration and opportunity: 44% of the residents in DFW are first or second generation immigrants. The number continues to grow. More than 239 languages are spoken in our city. We have nearly 20,000 international students and the largest refugee population in America. • Human trafficking: 25% of all international victims in America are in Texas. There are 6,000 runaways annually in Dallas. One out of three is lured into sex trafficking within 48 hours of leaving home. The average age of entry into sex trafficking is between 12 and 13 years old. • Vulnerable children—fatherless and orphans: There are as many as 210 million orphans around the world. 60% of the girls become prostitutes and 70% of the boys become hardened criminals. • Cycle of incarceration: The Dallas Crime Index indicates that Dallas is in the fourth percentile for safety. 94% of America’s cities are safer than we are. 223 crimes are committed in Dallas per square mile; the national average is 39. 5 2nd annual mdgd stretches limits This year’s MDGD enjoyed a growing number of attendees from diverse cultures, denominations and ethnicities that were united in their eagerness to see a gospel movement grow in Greater Dallas. Building upon the success of 2014, activities extended into the evening, providing greater access and opportunity for area leaders to experience and contribute to the work of gospel transformation in the city. The evening session was planned and executed by Initiative, a local millennial missional group and partner of MDGD. Local government was also visible through the support of Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings. In a special video message, Mayor Rawlings specifically addressed pastors and church leaders on the need for the initiative by saying, “We are now the number one city in America in regards to the percent of our population living at or below the poverty level . . . The power of togetherness can change our city. I love Dallas, and I know our churches can make a difference.” Vision. Currently including New York City and Dallas, the vision behind the day is to unite every sector of a city’s Christian community to collectively bring the Gospel to bear on pressing social issues such as education, hunger, human trafficking, and more. In so doing, these challenges are addressed with greater effectiveness and sustainability, ultimately resulting in city transformation. In the afternoon, participants broke into smaller groups based on their chosen “design track”, receiving specific information, training, and resources to connect with others and creating goals and strategies to mobilize change within their own communities. Twelve tracks were offered, including education, hunger, human trafficking, prison re-entry, immigrant and orphan care, marketplace impact, public safety chaplain support, leadership, financial stability, and youth leadership. Key speakers for the day included Dr. Jim Denison, Founder of Denison Forum on Truth and Culture, Chip Ingram, CEO and Teaching Pastor of Living on the Edge, Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor of Teaching at The Village Church, Dr. Jeff Warren, Senior Pastor of Park Cities Baptist Church, Pastor Bryan Carter of Concord Church, Dr. Mac Pier, founder of Movement Day and The New York City Leadership Center and Dr. K. Shelette Stewart, Associate Director of Business Development for Executive Education for Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business, among others. “This day is an opportunity to join hands to bring down racial divides, to address poverty, to love the poor, to serve our fellow citizens and transform our cities . . . This is the season of harvest.” Jon Edmonds, Executive Director of Movement Day Greater Dallas Dr. Jim Denison, Founder of Denison Forum on Truth and Culture, “The only solution for the future must be collaborative. Through the collaborative passion of the body of Christ, we can meet social needs, which will earn us the opportunity to respond to spiritual needs…When God’s people through God’s power come together, the impossible can happen.” 7 mDGD: the day churches represented at MDGD The main emphasis of this year’s gathering was unity through the beauty and strength of diversity. Attendees represented a wide demographic and included collaborating leaders from business, non-profit, faith-based, and local government sectors throughout the Greater Dallas area. Final registration resulted in a 28% increase from the previous year. The state of the global church is so substantial and complex that its growth has only taken place through the collaborative passion of believers. Dallas needs to follow suit. Joining our passions and working together is the only way we can create change. Dr. Mac Pier, Bob Doll & Dr. Jim Denison Dallas is one of the most strategic global cities for the Movement Day outreach model. Host to the largest urban arts center in the world, extensive medical industry, centers for politics and global transportation, as well as some of the highest concentrations of wealthy and poor, the opportunity for change through collaborative efforts is truly extraordinary. Dr. Mac Pier challenged the audience by saying, “Be students of the greatest needs of the world; then align them with the gifts that God has given you.” Chip Ingram “Are we Christians living as Christians? We cannot export what we do not have.” Social change can never occur if the people of the church are not focused first on living the life of a disciple. Using stories and examples from years of city-wide collaborative efforts, Chip challenged the audience to focus on internal heart change (giving up prejudices, loving your neighbor, etc.) in order to come together with others who are different than us in meaningful, collaborative efforts. “God must work deeply in me before he can work significantly through me.” 11 speakers and panelists continued Pastor Bryan Carter and Dr. Jeff Warren After meeting at last year’s MDGD, Dallas pastors Bryan Carter and Dr. Jeff Warren have intentionally worked to form a friendship that crossed racial barriers with many shared meals, texts, and hangouts in between. This year the two pastors spoke in tandem to present the idea that racial reconciliation is indeed a Gospel issue - one that the modern church must actively pursue in obedience to Christ. Dr. K. Shelette Stewart Dr. K. Shelette Stewart challenged the MDGD audience to bravely step out into the Lord’s calling. Trusting through His abilities alone, change can take place. It’s because of Christ that “you can be humble and powerful, youthful and wise, elderly and thriving, blind and a visionary.” Matt Chandler The Acts 19 account of the birth of the church in Ephesus set the stage for Chandler’s powerful evening message. Likening the approach of the first Christ-followers to the potential of Movement Day participants, he urged the audience to focus on obedience to Christ over all, saying, “The early church was so focused on Jesus and not themselves, that there was an outpouring of grace on the city.” He went on to explain that knowing Christ and loving Him is at the heart behind any flourishing Gospel movement and must always remain the lifeblood of budding initiatives like Movement Day. Dallas Mayor Rawlings (video) In a special video presentation, Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings expressed his concern over the current disconnect between public schools and churches in the Greater Dallas area. He went on to issue a challenge for every church in the city of Dallas to adopt a school, and develop a partnership that would provide volunteer help, tutoring, staff support, etc. through purposeful, relational investment in the lives of rising generations. Panelists: Unified Cultures – Brenda Teele, Grant Skeldon, Trey Hill, Sheila Bailey, Edwin Robinson “The main reason for our racial divide is history, ignorance and insensitivity,” said panelist Dr. Sheila Bailey. The panel remained hopeful that this divide will continue to lessen and emphasized that it’s only through our common belief in Jesus Christ that our culture can finally unify culture. Panelists also discussed the importance prayer makes among believers in Dallas as a means of lessening the divide between racial differences. Unified Resources – Bob Doll, Todd Moore, Bob Kulick, Bryan Carter, Raymond Harris “Giving is not a disease you catch. It is a part of who you are and how you live out your faith,” remarked Pastor Bryan Carter when asked about the role of the church in regards to generosity. The panel went on to share personal stories giving account to God’s faithfulness to individuals and even entire congregations who have chosen to make regular giving a priority. Unified Support – Jon Edmonds, Pieter Wasserman, Ronnie Morris, Edward Smith, Lane Grayson “The reason I partner with victim relief ministries is because I believe that if the church would show the love of Christ to the 80% [that don’t go to church] that’s hurting and suffering, we would earn the right to share the Gospel with them,” said panelist Pieter Wasserman. The Unified Support panel examined how Greater Dallas police and firefighters are beginning to include victim relief in what they do and discussed their belief that police and firefighters should not just be responsible for saving people but also for caring for those people after they save them. 13 speakers and panelists continued Unified Work – Monica Zuniga, Jana Jackson, Mercury Bynum, Bob Anderson, Rebecca Walls Oftentimes, strategies for city-wide change must be addressed by individuals from multiple levels of influence in order to become a reality. “We’ve learned, for example, that hunger in Dallas is a complex issue, and it really takes us working across all sectors of the city in order to make an impact,” said panelist Jana Jackson. Other panel members shared success stories of cross-pollination among Movement Day design tracks that occurred over the past year, encouraging the audience to reach across the aisles and do the same. Unified Faith – Dr. Jim Denison, Grant Skeldon, Edwin Robinson, Chelsea Vaughn, Onterio Green, Jonathan Pokluda Panelists discussed the misconceptions of millennials within the church and constructive ways to work toward multi-generational unification. “Stop begging millennials to come to church and start calling them to be The Church,” said panelist Jonathan Pokluda. Unified Transformation – Jon Pendergrass, Dr. Froswa’ Booker-Drew, Byron Sanders, Jerry Wagner, Noel Bouche’ Panelists urged churches to deal with racism’s devastating effects both historically and in present-day contexts by taking bold steps forward in forging diverse relationships. “[Racial unity] still feels new because we’ve had conversations about it, but the problem is we haven’t acted on the conversations that we’ve had,” panelist Jerry Wagner said. Racial reconciliation and unification in the church will ultimately lead to transformation in families, communities, and cities. Matt Chandler, Teaching Pastor of The Village Church, “I think anytime you can get people together from different tribes and different churches who are serious about the Gospel, the cross-pollination of networks and ideas acts as the catalyst for real change to occur.” Others: Dr. Froswa’ Booker-Drew Froswa’ masterfully managed the flow on the platform as the event’s emcee for the second year in a row. As the National Community Engagement Director -World Vision, US Programs, Froswa’s commitment to the leaders of Greater Dallas was evident in her encouragement throughout the day. Bruce Kuhn Movement Day audiences enjoyed several special live performances by Kuhn, who brought familiar scripture passages – including the book of Philippians – to life through captivating dramatic interpretations. Worship was led by Gaye Arbuckle and the Concord Church worship team for the day. The evening worship was led by recording artist Dara Maclean and David Terry. Charles Jenkins, Grammy award winning songwriter and pastor, led in a special time of worship to close the day session. Dr. Mac Pier, CEO, The New York City Leadership Center, “The greatest demographic reality in the world today is that there are 7,000 people moving into sizable cities every hour… Movement Day Greater Dallas is creating a template for how to replicate a gospel movement in a city and for a city.” 15 interactive tracks & collaborative partners The interactive tracks continued their collaboration from last year in search of solutions specific to the cities of Greater Dallas. Dr. Froswa’ Booker-Drew, National Community Engagement Director US Programs, World Vision, “In order to create change in communities, it is important for individuals from diverse backgrounds and views to come together to discover, learn and share their experiences. Collaboration is critical in order to make the necessary changes for growth.” Bob Doll, Chief Equity Strategist, Nuveen Asset Management, “Dallas is globally significant…It hosts the largest urban arts center in the world, 21 of the top 100 Forbes businesses, a medical community with 6 Nobel Laureates, a center for politics and global transportation, and one of the highest concentrations of wealthy and poor. I challenge the marketplace leaders to regard their work as a high calling from God and to act to help transform our workplaces, and in turn, our cities.” Dr. Jeff Warren, Senior Pastor of Park Cities Baptist Church, Dallas, TX, “If we do not know people of color, we cannot say we love people of color. You cannot love who you do not know…The core of our identity has to be Jesus, not our racial label.” 33 what participants had to say about the day “I appreciated the cultural awareness that was shared at the plenary sessions. Sometimes we get so involved in our organization, efforts, and mission that we can forget to look outside the window of a moving train. There are many opportunities around us and a shifting culture.” “Bryan Carter & Jeff Warren were incredible. They gave tangible ways to close the gap between the racial divide in churches and made growing a real and positive thing for our city! Being a millennial, I would have loved them to speak in the evening session and make this construct a talk directed at young people.” “The group interaction and networking that took place was extremely valuable.” “We must all work together.” “Matt Chandler was exceptional, timely and very challenging. As a millennial myself I thought he was the perfect speaker for the audience and the evening message. Excellent choice for a speaker anytime though, he is truly gifted by God.” “I was VERY impressed!” “How passionate and powerful the delivery of each speaker was, it was phenomenal.” “Chip Ingram was so helpful in sharing the nuts and bolts of rreconciliation & restoration. It gave me much hope it could happen here.” “My heart was quickened to visit churches that don’t look like I do.” “It is not very often that the worship at these kind of gatherings proves to be satisfying, but I truly enjoyed this one.” “I loved the panels. I thought the questions were good, and I loved hearing different perspectives.” “There was a point in Jon Edmonds’ closing remarks last night when I realized that part of the reason God moved me to Dallas in 1996 is to be involved in this movement.” Chip Ingram, Senior Pastor, Venture Christian Church, Los Gatos, CA, “We’re not here to glorify a movement. We’re here to glorify God. We must die to ourselves, and we must follow Him. Only then can we begin to make a difference. We can’t export what we don’t have.” Dr. K. Shelette Stewart, DirectorExecutive Education, SMU Cox School of Business, “We are called to serve as God’s ambassadors on the earth.
