Introduction
Why did we start the World Entrepreneur Of The Year program? The answer, quite
simply, is that entrepreneurs matter. Entrepreneurs create jobs, and their innovations
enrich people’s lives. Their forward-thinking and creativity makes a difference to their
communities and to society as a whole. Now in its 13th year, World Entrepreneur Of The
Year is a celebration of this important contribution.
®
Each World Entrepreneur Of The Year finalist has been awarded Entrepreneur Of The Year
in his or her home country. This national award was first held 27 years ago in a single
American city. Today, the program spans more than 140 cities in more than 50 countries.
Its success is a testament to the power the entrepreneurial ideal holds for people
worldwide.
The Entrepreneur Of The Year Program is an important way to recognize a group of
people who often don’t get the recognition they deserve. Around the world, the award
honors the contributions of successful entrepreneurs and serves to:

Foster new entrepreneurial activity and economic growth in participating countries
On Saturday, 8 June, all participating Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners will be
recognized for their entrepreneurial achievements and inducted into the World
Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame. Following the induction ceremony, one winner will
be announced as the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013.

floor of the Hotel Hermitage. Attending media must register here. The media center will
be open every day during the event from 8:00 a.m. until late, except during Saturday’s

What is new this year?
This year, we have designed the program to include world-renowned speakers and timely
content. The four-day event will conclude with the World Entrepreneur Of The Year gala
on Saturday evening. The event will include:

Filming permits
A permit is required for all professional filming and photography in Monaco. This permit is
issued by the Government of Monaco. Cameras and camcorders for personal use do not
require permits. Application for filming permits should be made within the online
registration process.
All crew members should keep a hard copy of the permit with them while filming and are
required to present it along with their World Entrepreneur Of The Year badge if asked. It
is also advisable for film crew members to carry personal photo ID.
World Entrepreneur Of The Year winner’s press conference
A press conference with the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013 winner will be held at
Salle des Etoiles Summer Sporting Club in the Salle des Palmiers on Saturday, 8 June,
immediately following the conclusion of the award ceremony. All media are encouraged to
attend. There will be a working area and internet connectivity available at the venue. The
media center at the Hôtel Hermitage, which will be closed during the ceremony, will
reopen following the press conference.

An up-to-date, onsite, country PR contacts list will be available at the media center and on
the WEOY App. The contacts sheet and WEOY App contain information on country

National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)
Ernst & Young supports NFTE by providing a scholarship in each of its 26 US programs
and recently extended the scholarship to countries outside the US where NFTE has
operations. NFTE is the only global non-profit organization solely focused on bringing
entrepreneurship education to low-income youth and impacts the lives of nearly 50,000
young people annually.
Amy Rosen, President and CEO of NFTE, will join us again at the event this year. Amy is a
recognized expert in comprehensive urban school-system-reform who has worked to
close the achievement gap by providing young people with high quality educational
opportunities. She will be available for interviews throughout the event.
Accompanying Amy is a young entrepreneur, Andres Cardona, NFTE South Florida Class

What is the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award?
The World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award is now in its 13th year. The program was
created by Ernst & Young to recognize the accomplishments of entrepreneurs around the
world. It builds on Ernst & Young’s 27 years of success in running Entrepreneur Of The
Year Award programs in many countries. In 2013, 49 Entrepreneur Of The Year country
winners, representing 47 countries, will be inducted in to the World Entrepreneur Of The

What is the difference between the Entrepreneur Of The Year
Award and the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013 Award?
Nominees in each country who are vying for the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award start at
a regional level. Regional award winners are announced in several categories. Each
regional winner competes for the country’s national Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.
Each country Entrepreneur Of The Year winner is eligible to join other country winners to
compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.
When was the program started?
The Entrepreneur Of The Year program began in the United States in 1986, and we
continue to expand the program internationally.
How many countries are participating in the 2013 World
Entrepreneur Of The Year Award?
There are 47 countries participating, including Serbia and Uruguay for the first time.
Why did Ernst & Young establish the Entrepreneur Of The Year
Program?
We started the program to recognize the world’s most successful and innovative
entrepreneurs. By identifying and recognizing the achievements of outstanding
entrepreneurs within successful, growing and dynamic businesses, we aim to encourage
entrepreneurial activity around the world.
We work with great entrepreneurs at every level of society: fresh thinkers at global
corporations, visionaries at pre-IPO firms, and social entrepreneurs working on society’s
most pressing problems. We have learned a great deal from these interactions and
recognize that entrepreneurialism isn’t about size; it’s about a state of mind. We believe
it’s something that all businesses can — and should — embrace.
We want to encourage people around the world to think about what it takes to be an
entrepreneur and how we can create an environment where innovation and creativity can
thrive. The Entrepreneur Of The Year and World Entrepreneur Of The Year programs are a
natural extension of this commitment.

No, but all of the country winners will be recognized for their entrepreneurial
achievements and inducted into the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame.

How is the winner selected?
Each member of the World Entrepreneur Of The Year independent judging panel receives
a detailed packet of information on each of the country winners shortly in advance of the
judging session. After a private meeting of the winners and judges while in Monte Carlo,
the panel convenes on Saturday morning to discuss each candidate’s qualifications and to
select the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013. The winner is announced at the blacktie award ceremony on Saturday evening.
How do you ensure the judging process is unbiased?
As most of the judges are past country winners of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award,
we believe they understand the importance of an unbiased and fair selection process to
uphold the integrity of the program. Judges are rotated from year to year to ensure fresh
thinking and enthusiasm in the judging process.
Who is on the independent judging panel for the World
Entrepreneur Of The Year Award?
The World Entrepreneur Of The Year judging panel is composed primarily of past
Entrepreneur Of The Year winners, representing all geographies around the globe and
industries from financial to technology to energy and life sciences.
This year, the World Entrepreneur Of The Year judging panel will be chaired by Rodrigo
Alonso Herrera Aspra, CEO and Chairman of the Board, S.A.B. de C.V.
Rodrigo will facilitate discussions with members of the judging panel to ensure all of the
candidates are reviewed and considered for this year's World Entrepreneur Of The Year

How can companies with vastly different business philosophies and
turnover be judged against each other?
The award is given on the basis of six criteria, allowing all country winners an equal
opportunity to compete: entrepreneurial spirit; financial performance; strategic direction;
innovation; global impact; and personal integrity/influence.

Judging process
World Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists are assessed by an independent panel of judges
from around the world, most of whom have previously participated in Entrepreneur Of
The Year programs. Ernst & Young personnel are not involved in the judging process.
Judges receive written information on the entrepreneurs representing 47 countries prior
to their arrival in Monte Carlo. They will meet with each other and the finalists privately
to learn more about their achievements, as well as several times socially throughout the
weekend. The candidates are evaluated according to the following set of criteria:
1. Entrepreneurial spirit: sets very high standards for self and business and
demonstrates strong leadership skills and an unflinching desire and determination to be
successful. Entrepreneur demonstrates perseverance in the face of adversity and
overcoming obstacles. Has undergone significant disappointments and learned from
those experiences. While the entrepreneur relies on trusted individuals and the team, he
or she also shows capacity to be an independent thinker and to take on and manage risks
in the face of uncertainty.
2. Financial performance: this is reflected in the strength of the organization’s financial
performance. If applicable; the track record in raising finance; the quality of past
investments; if public, market performance over the past three years; and the strategies
in place for long-term sustainability.
3. Strategic direction: creates and turns business visions into business realities. Builds
and rebuilds the teams’ commitment to the common goals. Demonstrates the ability to
produce new products, use product innovately and differentiate themselves from their
competitors. Demonstrate operational excellence within the organization to optimize
structure and processes within the business model. Entrepreneur demonstrates
entrepreneurial maturity by building strategic alliances and surrounding himself or
herself with talented people — sharing knowledge and empowering individuals, teams, the
board and a range of advisers/allies, to ensure success for all.
4. Global (or community) impact: the entrepreneur’s global impact can be measured
with either revenue, operational, or influential presence in international markets. Results
of their presence in these markets include job creation and improved living economics.
Alternatively, if not currently doing business overseas, a strategy and model to expand
their presence abroad is under development and shows a high degree of potential.
5. Innovation: the entrepreneur pioneers a new approach/business model in product,
culture or processes. The entrepreneur recognizes the business imperative of
anticipating and embracing change occurring in the competitive environment through
continuous improvement and innovation in all aspects of the business. Entrepreneur
creates a culture of innovation within the organization.
6. Personal integrity/influence: living his or her values has earned great respect from
staff, competitors, customers, advisers, family and the wider community. A culture of
corporate social responsibility within the organization demonstrates a commitment to
the highest ethical and quality standards in business activities and operations, resulting
in an inclusive and flexible workplace, highly regarded reputation, positive social change,
impact on the environment and/or improved quality of life within their community.

family’s home to take his business from a self-employment

In 1989, after spotting a clear gap in the market, Anthony,
a former schoolteacher, launched an outsourced salary
packaging service in response to the recently introduced
Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) regime in Australia.
Recognizing that the FBT, a tax levied on non-cash benefits
provided by an employer, could bring significant commercial
benefits to businesses and their employees, Anthony built a
business that today combines salary packaging services
with vehicle leasing and fleet management, as well as
financing, insurance and other related services.
Along with growing the business, Anthony has helped to
shape the legislative landscape in Australia. As a result,
some three million employees who work under awards and
enterprise agreements are also able to participate in
flexible, salary packaging arrangements.
Anthony can now look back and see that he wasn’t just a

Persistence and pride best sum up Guido Vanherpe’s
passionate approach to growing his family business, which
aims to deliver high-quality bread at affordable prices. La
Lorraine Bakery Group (LLBG) has grown 14% year on year
for the past 15 years, although the story could have been
very different. In 2008, a fire destroyed one of LLBG’s
bakeries, but Guido saw this as an opportunity to rebuild
and become stronger.
From its internationalization 20 years ago, the business
now has 2,600 employees. It is Belgium’s leader in the
fresh baked goods market, delivering bread daily to 1,500
supermarkets. It is also one of the market leaders in the
European frozen bake-off market, exporting its bakery
products to more than 25 European countries.
Guido demonstrated his vision and ambition when he
conquered the central and eastern European market in the
1990s. In the post-communist era, central and eastern
European consumers had a chance to sample a wide variety
of high-quality bakery products for the first time. This was
a considerable change from the choice available during the
communist period.
Other innovations include Panos, LLBG’s store-concept
brand for ready-to-eat sandwiches, which now has 250
outlets.
Guido puts entrepreneurial success down to two common
threads. The first is persistence: guts and passion can
overcome major setbacks. The second is pride: the passion
to be best. LLBG’s managers are proud of their skills and of
their team.
LLBG now operates 11 production plants and had a
turnover of €519m (US$675m) in 2012.

Geology graduate Marco Stefanini is one of the biggest
names in outsourcing. This is thanks to the eponymous
company that he founded in 1987, initially to provide IT
training services. Stefanini IT Solutions has evolved into an
outsourcing giant that has more than 17,000 employees
across 31 countries and target revenues of US$1.2b for
2013. The company’s portfolio of services includes help
desk support, business process outsourcing (for example, of
finance or HR activities) and IT consulting.
Over the years, Marco has made a significant contribution
to the outsourcing industry. He founded the Brazilian
Association of Software and Services for Export
(BRASSCOM) in 2004. Industry news website Nearshore
Americas named him as one of the most influential
executives in the Latin American outsourcing industry,
twice ranking him on its “Top 50 Power Rankings” list in
2010 and 2011. In 2012, he was inducted into the
International Association of Outsourcing Professionals’ Hall
of Fame, the highest accolade in the outsourcing industry.
Marco is the only executive from the IT sector to participate
in the Brazil-US CEO Forum, which was launched in 2007 to
strengthen economic and commercial ties between the two
countries. He is also involved with the UK-Brazil Joint
Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) and the BrazilIndia CEO Forum.
Marco has a strong sense of social responsibility. He
founded the non-profit Stefanini Institute, which aims to
create opportunities for disadvantaged children in Brazil by
giving them IT training. To date, the institute has trained
more than 50,000 people for free.

Ulsifer’s is clearer than most. As president and CEO of
FYidoctors, his goal was to turn independent optometrists,
who lack the advantages of large chains, into powerful

quickly, this idea turned into Canada’s largest independent
eye care provider.
Dr. Ulsifer’s strategy was to create a compelling story about
how independent doctors could lead the industry. His
cooperative model combined many small companies into
one and transformed Canada’s eye care industry. The seeds
were planted in June 2006 when a group of doctors
discussed quality eye care and the challenges facing the
industry. They worried that a “box store” mentality of eye
care would result in a lower quality of care and felt that

With the aim of addressing these concerns, the eye doctors
formed Canada’s most modern optical manufacturing and
distribution facility. On 1 April 2008, FYidoctors became
the largest merger by a number of companies in Canadian
history. The company now has over 100 locations, more
than 250 doctors and 1,200 employees. Each primary
location has access to state-of-the art diagnostic
equipment, exclusive custom lens manufacturing and a wide
selection of frames.

Jorge Pacheco was born into a peasant family on Isla
Tenglo, an island opposite the harbor town of Puerto Montt
in southern Chile. Sensing that his future lay in the sea and
not on the land, he started working with his brother Ivar at
the tender age of 14, first as a fisherman and then as a
shellfish diver. He combined work with his studies at a local
Chilean-German industrial school and began to dream of
becoming an entrepreneur.
Jorge’s time with the Chilean navy, where he was a rescue
diver and helped to raise a sunken ship, further convinced
him of the opportunities presented by a country blessed
with over 4,000 kilometers of coastline. So when he was 26,
he founded fishing and diving company Oxxean with Ivar.
Since its formation in 1977, Oxxean has grown to become a
major provider of maritime services and an employer of
more than 500 people. Its main activities include rescue of
ships in distress, professional diving, cleaning and
inspection of vessels and refloating of sunken ships. It owns
two ports (one in the Lakes region and the other in the
Aysen region), which are equipped with the latest
technology and support shipping to the southernmost tip of
Chile. It also boasts a fleet of 15 working ships, which are
equipped to lift up to 30 tons and have floating tow and
professional diving equipment.
In 2007, Jorge was named as an Endeavor Entrepreneur by
international non-profit organization Endeavor Global, which
recognizes the achievements of high-impact entrepreneurs
in emerging markets.

When Dr. Ruth Oltjer used to work as a doctor in different
hospitals, she suffered disturbing allergies due to the
disinfectants she was using on a daily basis. She decided to
look for allergen-free alternatives, initially sourcing products
from England. Soon word of mouth among friends and
colleagues created such demand that, in 1997, Dr. Oltjer set
up her own company, Chemi-Pharm AS, in order to make
importing the products easier.
In 2000, the company began production in Estonia.
Year on year, production volumes have increased, while
export markets have expanded and product variety has been
enriched. Today, the company has 5,000 customers and more
than 100 different products, which meet the highest local and
European Union standards.
In addition to disinfectants, the company also produces
cleaning and maintenance agents and cosmetics, including
eco brand Domina Elegans. The main target market for ChemiPharm is medical institutions, but educational bodies,
households and various service and production companies
also use its products. Approximately half of Chemi-Pharm’s
turnover is generated by export and its main export markets
are the EU, ex-Soviet nations, Russia and Asia.
Chemi-Pharm has undergone considerable change, but its
core values have remained the same. The products and
production processes are harmless to people and the
environment. The products are biodegradable, and the allergy
effect has been minimized. In December 2012, the company
was awarded a certificate of European Corporate Social
Responsibility.

Jean-Luc Petithuguenin’s belief that the recycling
revolution is on a par with the industrial revolution has
driven him to become one of the leading recycling
entrepreneurs in Europe. His business philosophy is that

passion.
When Jean-Luc became CEO of Paprec in 1995, it had just
45 employees. Today, its workforce is greater than 3,500,
and turnover has grown from US$6.4m to US$930m over
those 18 years, with an average annual increase of 29%
during this time. Now one of France’s leading independent
recyclers, Paprec has multiplied the tonnage it recycles by
100 so that last year it processed five million tons of
waste. The number of sites has increased by 80 and the
number of plants by 50.
Jean-Luc‘s goal is to exceed US$1.5b turnover by the end
of 2014, and to hire 1,500 new employees, so that the
group becomes one of Europe’s leaders in recycling. He
successfully secured US$200m late last year to pursue
this ambition, which he aims to achieve by constantly
pushing the limits of recycling through continuous
innovation. He plays a major role in developing the future
of recycling and sustainability. He has also won numerous
awards that recognize his commitment to the industry.
Jean-Luc ensures that social dimensions have been woven

Engineer Sven Bauer is the driving force behind BMZ, a
specialist producer of rechargeable battery packs based in
the southern German town of Karlstein. BMZ’s products

Its customers include well-known home appliance
manufacturers, as well as the police and the military.
Sven co-founded BMZ in 1994 with two partners, but he is
now the company’s sole owner. Under his guidance, BMZ
has become a leader in the rapidly expanding lithium-ion
battery market, which is expected to be worth US$43b by
2020, according to Pike Research, up from US$11b in
2010. So the future bodes well for BMZ, which had
turnover of US$166m in 2012, representing a substantial
increase in revenues of nearly 60% compared with 2010.
The company has also set itself an ambitious turnover
target of US$263m for the current fiscal year.
Besides its headquarters near Frankfurt, BMZ has
production sites in Poland, Mainland China and the US.
Sven believes that BMZ’s skilled and motivated workforce
has been instrumental in its success and the company
employs over 1,200 people globally. BMZ works closely
with its customers to design batteries that meet their
requirements, offering bespoke services that cover
drawing, samples, testing and mass production.
As a self-confessed battery enthusiast, Sven likes to

Adi Godrej joined his family’s business in 1963, armed

management degree from Massachusetts Institute of

presence in around 60 countries. It is now one of India’s

related to information technology, processing, renewable
energy and new media.
In 2007, Russian telecommunication company MTS Group
named Andrey “Manager of the Year.” Two years later, he
won a Russian Retail Finance Award in the “Big Dreamer”

During its early years, ARA had to battle against the

into a corporation with more than 1,000 employees in 12
cities. ARA has recorded year-on-year revenue growth
since its listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2007

With no proven roadmap to follow, John helped to establish
the REIT industry in Singapore. Among ARA’s many

projects while Dr. Levársky himself owns the soccer team
FK Senica, which plays in the top division of the Slovak

When Sipho Nkosi founded coal mining company Eyesizwe
Holdings and Coal in 1999, he set himself a few important
goals. At the time, few black executives in South Africa
were running successful businesses that they themselves

a “divided and underprivileged society,” Sipho was
determined to become a role model for his own son and
others. He also dreamed of creating a mineral extraction
giant based in South Africa, which would help the African
continent to earn the respect of the world.
Sipho had previously worked in new-market development
for another natural resources company, so he had an
excellent understanding of the opportunities that existed
for South African coal producers in emerging Asian and
Latin American economies. Under his leadership, Eyesizwe
grew rapidly and by 2005 it was producing 20 million tons
of coal per year.
In 2006, Eyesizwe merged into Exxaro, a coal and mineral
group formed from the unbundling of the non-iron ore
assets of South African mining company Kumba Resources.
The following year, Sipho became Exxaro’s CEO. Today,
Exxaro has a turnover of US$1.4b and employs more than
7,500 people. Over 15% of its shareholders are
international and it has operations on four continents.
Exxaro invests 5% of its wage bill in training its people
because it believes that education is necessary to build a

being the great granddaughter of Josep Raventós Fatjó,

Barcelona in 1551. Today, Codorníu is the world's largest
producer of bottle-fermented sparkling wine, known as

Mar, as she likes to be known, joined the group in 1976 as

become Assistant General Manager of the group and was

decided to change his life completely.
Peter bought Kopparbergs Bryggeri a well-established
brewery dating back to 1882 that was on the edge of
bankruptcy in 1994. Not only did the Gothenburg
businessman rescue it, he transformed it into Sweden’s
largest brewing company and revitalized the world’s fruit
cider market in the process.
Kopparberg is a small town in central Sweden and the
brewery is its biggest employer. Nearly 290 employees
work for the company, which exports its fruit cider and
lagers to more than 30 countries and boasts turnover of
almost SEK2b. Peter masterminded this growth by
developing a sweeter cider and a wide range of flavors from
traditional choices such as apple and pear through to more
exotic flavors including strawberry and lime and a
blackcurrant limited edition named “Witches Brew.”
Kopparberg’s target consumers are 25- to 34-year-olds and
it has over 150,000 fans on social networking website
Facebook.
Today, Kopparberg Cider is the world’s bestselling pear
cider and the brewer is the third largest producer of cider in
the UK, the country that has the highest per capita
consumption of cider. Kopparbergs Bryggeri has also been
recognized for its lager, which was awarded “Best
European Lager” at the Beer World Cup in San Diego in
2008. Peter aims to continue the company’s success in all
markets by producing high-quality products, creating new
flavors and finding fresh niches.

Bozlu has consistently invested in state-of-the-art
technology and in research and development. It also prides

Quality Chemical Industries Ltd (QCIL). QCIL is a significant
employer of scientists in Uganda and an important provider
of essential drugs for the treatment of malaria and
HIV/AIDS — Uganda’s two biggest killer diseases.
QCIL is the only pharmaceutical company in sub-Saharan
Africa that manufactures triple-combination antiretroviral
(ARV) drugs for reducing the virulence of the HIV infection.
Over the past five years, the company has helped to
increase the number of AIDS patients receiving treatment
from 140,000 to around 500,000. It has also worked to
build awareness of the syndrome in Uganda, which has
decreased the HIV/AIDS incidence rate from 15% to below
8% in this period. In addition, the company’s anti-malarial
medicines have played a major role in cutting the number of
deaths from malaria in Uganda from 400 per day to below
200. It is the company’s ambition to reduce this number to
zero.
QCIL’s first plant was built in 2007 and the initial
investment was US$32m to finance the project. Today, it
produces around six million tablets daily and a second plant
is being planned, which will increase production to 18
million pills per day. Its objective is to supply affordable
medicines across sub-Saharan Africa through bilateral
agreements between Uganda and its neighboring countries.
Emmanuel has interests in the food and beverage
production industry in Uganda since he is the founder of
Vero Food Industries, which processes rice and produces
bottled drinking water. He is also a shareholder and
director of Ugandan technology company TINOSOFT.

flavors from plain to mango, passion fruit and strawberry

Hamdi was born into a dairy-farming family in eastern
Turkey, but he moved to the US in 1994 to learn English and
pursue business school. He never finished business school.
Instead, he started making feta cheese in upstate New York
in 2002 after his father visited and complained about the
quality of cheese on sale.
Three years later, Hamdi bought a closed-down yogurt
factory, despite being advised against it by friends, and
founded his company Chobani. He started out with five
employees and it took a year and a half to develop the
product. In 2009, Hamdi signed a major deal with leading US
grocery wholesaler Costco and today Chobani’s annual sales
are approaching US$1b. It has a workforce of more than
2,200 people and sells its products in Australia and the UK,
as well as in the US. Chobani’s newest US manufacturing
facility is the largest yogurt factory in the world.
As an immigrant, Hamdi believes in embracing change and
improving communities. So, 10% of Chobani’s profits are
donated to the company’s charitable foundation, Shepherd’s
Gift Foundation. The company is an official sponsor of the US

terms of what he could do with the company. In 2002, he
founded Karma Resorts, bringing the concept of boutique villa
resorts to Asia allowing clients to purchase freehold villas.
Most recently, John has developed Chakra Resorts as a brand,
along with Karma Estates, Karma Spa, and a chain of beach
bars under the Nammos and Karma Beach labels.
Currently The Karma Royal Group has developed, managed and
operated 22 resorts on four continents, with six currently
under development; has zero debt or leverage and is still 100 %
owned by John. It employs in excess of 3,000 people, is the
market leader in its field and is poised for dramatic growth.

Daniel Novegil is Ternium’s CEO, a Latin American leading
steel-producing company with annual revenues of US$9b. It
has manufacturing facilities in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia,
the US and Guatemala. Ternium recently acquired a jointcontrolling stake in Usiminas, the main steel producer in Brazil
(additional revenues of around US$7b). Ternium, a NYSE-listed

The founder of a mid-tier corporate bank called Finansbank (and
its chairman between 1987-2010), Hüsnü Özyeğin expanded
the business into over 400 branches throughout nine countries,
mostly in Europe, and sold a controlling stake in his bank in
2006, receiving US$2.7b in cash.
Called “a new breed of billionaire” by the New York Times,
Hüsnü is today actively pushing for social change and the
advancement of youth in his country. He is doing all he can to
lift Turkish educational standards at the primary and university
level. Since 2000 he has spent US$500m of his own personal
fortune on schools and girls’ dormitories in the poorest parts of
Turkey, through the creation of the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin
Foundation. He also founded Özyeğin University in 2008 that
has an enrollement of 3000 undergraduate and graduate
students. Hüsnü is one of the biggest individual supporter of
education in Turkey. His goal is to send more Turkish students
to his alma mater, Harvard Business School, where is he is on
the Board of Dean’s Advisors.
