FOX FORCE 005 A FORCE TO BEHOLD FOR 2009 Our cover gal for Valentine’s Day is JJ Wilder! JJ who is from our area here migrated to Los Angeles, CA. The move has pushed her forward with her life long dream to create, produce and establish her own all female top-40 band which she is one of the singers! The Band called FOX FORCE 005! JJ added “We are five very international, very hardworking, very creative, very cute chicks with tons of MO-to-DA-JO. We have big plans and lots of surprises in store--You will be hearing a lot more from us before You know it.” The search for the right gals out in LA wasn’t an easy one and there were many grueling auditions! They recently just played outside NAMM and are looking to expand worldwide says her Publicist/ agent Lynn Ramage’ Now remember, this little bombshell has been modeling Beauty & glamour and specializing in commercial print & fitness. She has shot for magazine submission (maxim, oxygen, pasmag etc.) and graced our covers in the past. I asked JJ about her plans; “I’ve been on some posters and calendars in a couple of magazines and catalogs and have toured the country as a spokes model for a motor sports company. I’ve sung the national anthem at a dozen different race tracks, but I really came out here to pursue a pop music career and it took awhile, but that’s exactly what’s happening--2009 is the year of the Fox!” Check out: Myspace.com/JJ Dynamite :: Photographer credits go to Jonni Jade (Jaded Image). I’m happy to say that I have watched Formula 259 grow from a little cover band playing the local pubs to one of the area’s hottest party bands in just a couple months! Formula 259 has been touring the club and bar circuit up and down the East Coast hard core since mid November and is ready to roll out with a fresh batch of Spring shows guaranteed to make you leave the bar wanting more! Formula 259’s founders, drummer Tony C (aka Meat) and guitarist Matthew Shultz have built fine oiled machine consisting of long time friend and bassist Don Falso and recently updated the band’s sound with lead guitarist Pete Dicanto of the original band Morning Side and added soulful female vocalist Liz Taylor. The band’s musical style can “vary depending on the mood and the show” says Bust A Move old school track and watch the crowd go wild” says Matt. “We got sick and tired of going to local bars and clubs, hearing the same old tired bands, playing the same old tired songs. After 1 too many drunken complaints, our friends edged us on to finally stop bitching about the bad cover bands on stage and form a “party band” of our own. A party band that will play what you want to hear on a Friday night, when you want drink and have fun! So that just what we did…” I was in attendance as Formula 259 brought in the New Year by hosting and performing at one of the largest New Years Eve cluded the crowd dancing to more of today’s pop hits such as: Pink’s “So What”, Kevin Rudolph’s “Let it Rock”, and “Kissed A Girl”. We love to play Katy Perry’s “Kissed A Girl”, said Formula 259’s bassist Don Falso with a big smile, the band will invite a bunch of girls on stage, play the song and magic then seems to follow every time… When I asked Formula 259 what can we expect in the near future, the response was simply “A Bigger Party”. “We have been slated and one of the area’s top party bands and I don’t want the reputation to get tarnished, so we will continue to re-invent the band, update the song list and make people happy while they get drunk”. Since their start in 2007, Stems & Seeds has worked for many of the local area bars and clubs, using the term POWER Acoustic to describe their unique sound. One bar that has definitely taken notice of this band is Fluke’s Bar and Grill, located at 7401 State Road in NE Philly. Stems & Seeds will now be LIVE at Fluke’s every First Friday of Every Month, starting on February 6, 2009 from 6 pm – 10 pm. Stems & Seeds is definitely something different and a band you’ll want to see. Comprised of 5 very talented musicians, this band takes the time to constantly add new music to their set lists Page 5 offers music that is popular, fun and danceable, but at a volume where people can still talk and enjoy their friends without having to scream over the music. What they’ve created has been very well-received by the many people that continue to go out and see the band in action. First Fridays at Fluke’s is the perfect place to enjoy what to keep their shows fresh, Stems & Seeds offers and First Fridays are surely going but they are very careful not to play the same songs to be everyone’s favorite many other bands seem to once-a-month meeting place play. By Mike Vagnoni I had to get up at 4 am to get down to the Wachovia Center with my pals from Curran’s Irish Inn... hey Andrew thanks for the ride down. Girls, Girls, Girls... was what I saw and the music was provided by Mike LeCompt with Tommy Conwell making a guest appearance at halftime - the music was awesome and the fans went wild. This was better then girls gone wild... this was the WING BOWL No 17.... it’s like Mardi Gras and New Years day all rolled into one giant party. This year they had wing eaters from all over the Delaware Valley and we did attend some of the pre-contest held at places like: Paddy Whacks and McStews ... but 610 WIP held contest at many other area bars... the outcome was what led us to go down for the finals at the Wachovia center to see this mega party in action. You had to love the wingettes -so many good looking gals all in one place made getting up to be there by 6 am another good reason to see this event live. AND THE WINNER IS: The Winner was Jonathan Squibb “ Super Squibb” from Camden County. This guy took in 203 wings and beat the odds to be crowned this year’s winner. In 2nd place was Richard “Not Rich” Razzi and in third place was our buddy and good pal the one an only Henry Goldey “HANK THE TANK” - Go get em’ next year Hank. Super Squibb won a mini Cooper and a $7,500 diamond ring... not bad for being the champ. Here are some Photos of the day... by the way the entire crew from WIP 610 Sports radio just did an amazing job... Angelo rocked. Shouts out to everyone at 610 and all the staff at the Wachovia center for a well planned out event. Check out some of these photos. We can’t wait till next year for WING BOWL 18. It’s definitely a homegrown project, much like the band itself. Railroad Earth’s new studio release, Amen Corner, was written and recorded at singer Todd Sheaffer’s empty, 300 year-old house in New Jersey’s rural countryside. What happened inside the building was the experience of a lifetime for the band’s members, resulting in an early creative pinnacle of a gifted young band, and an album that is an instant Americana classic. Amen Corner is a collection of crisp and crafted roots, bluegrass, and acoustic sides that resonates in all the right places. The tunes breathe both on and between the notes. I asked a lot of my musician friends to participate and many of them jumped on board.” So far DiFonzo has gotten commitments from Eric Bazilian, Rob Hyman, John Lilley and Fran Smith, Jr. of the Hooters, Smash Palace, Earl Slick and Kasim Sulton and, of course, DiFonzo and his band DiFonzo Pop Experiment. “Everyone is volunteering their services including Live Nation”, says DiFonzo. “Children’s hospitals everywhere are worthy causes. Aries (March 21-April 19) You are headed for a new direction. It is good to know the path you are on is the right one for you. You may be handling things differently and that is a good thing too. Follow your instincts. They will take you where you want to go. Schedule a little fun in your mix. Taurus (April 20-May 20) The time has come to be more aware of what is going on around you. Take the blinders off and take a good look around. You will be surprised by the results. You may be causing your own problems and blaming others for them. Look for the brighter side, and you will be happier. Gemini (May 21-June 20) The need for more support is essential to your heading in a new direction. Except the help and you will see things will start to go right. Allow your personality to expose the true person you are, and jump in with both feet. In time you will see the results for what you are looking to do. Cancer (June 21-July 22) Being compassionate with someone who needs you is very admirable, but you must take some time for yourself. The responsibility does not have to be all yours. Ask for help and it will be granted to you. Your kindness to others is a good thing as long as it is not becoming all there is to your life. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Staying focused is important for you right now. You should be doing what needs to be done not just what you want to do. Fun is fun, but work must be done. Bring in those who are close to you for a little help. It will go much faster. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your flirtatious attitude is giving people the wrong idea. You are much more than you are allowing people to see. What you are looking for is a healthy relationship and you are finding disrespect. Be yourself, and it will work better for you. Command respect, and you will find it. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The world might seem to be crashing in on you, and too much is happening at one time. Relax a little, and it all will get done. Put your energies in the right places, and see how quickly things come together. Leave some time for a loved one. They need you too. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Try to curb you needs to speak out in anger to those around you. You are not the only one who knows how sharp you can be. The people around you do not understand what your needs are, and only you can make those needs understood. Try to do it lovingly. Sagittarius (Nov.22-Dec. 21) Even though taking a back seat is difficult for you; the time has come to do so. You are tired, and having to be on all the time is causing you to become more fatigued. Others may not be able to do the job as well as you, but perhaps good enough, is good enough for now. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan 19) If you are finding rebellion among those around you it could be the tone in your voice. It never hurts to be diplomatic. You will find people more receptive to you, and they will help you with what you need to be done. Locking horns accomplishes nothing. Aquarius (Jan.20-Feb 18) Money matters are taking top priority at this time. Look deeper into what needs to be done to increase your income. Now that the holiday bills are all in you have to work on a budget to bring the debt down. Perhaps a part time job if you have the time for one would be a good idea. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You are in a strange influence at the present time, so you have to expect the unexpected. This is a time when surprise is normal. Be more aware of what is going on around you. Now is not the time to blindly follow the crowd. Be aware of where you are putting things as well. You may not be able to find them later. Volume 30 Number 17 • February 4, 2009 to February 25, 2009 • www.OOTWEB.com Bullwinkle... Moose On The Loose Original Bands, Musicians & Local Scene East of Anything I’m always prowling around for good original local bands, either at the clubs, or on MySpace. I recently came across a band from the small town of Sewell NJ - “East Of Anything”. The band fronted by Gene Micofsky is a real talent to say the least... East of Anything is a stimulating onslaught of contemporary rock music from Gene Micofsky, Brian Carola, and Darren Zimmer. The project began as a solo project for Gene Micofsky; a vehicle for new original rock music he began writing in early 2008. As ideas took more shapely form, a 3 song EP was produced, and the band performed live in the Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey area. In the summer of 2008 The Gene Micofsky band performed in the Shure Microphones & Street Chic Fashions Original Sessions National Band Search 2008/2009 in New York City. The band received radio play on the Sunday night program WSTW Hometown Heroes, and was the featured artist on Pongid internet radio. Gene began completing more material for a debut record and working more closely with the supporting band of Brian Carola (bass) and Dave Dabek (drums). Despite being the composer and bandleader, the project started to feel more like a band collaboration than a solo project. So the name East of Anything was adopted as the new moniker for the project. Due to Dave’s relocation to Boston, Darren Zimmer recently joined camp as the new drummer. Sewell NJ, is only 30 minutes from Philly so you can catch the band performing locally The band’s full-length debut is set for release February 17th 2009. Check them out at www. myspace.com/eastofanything In my column I will attempt to bring as many of these artists to your attention as possible, and we hope that you will support them in kind. You can also visit the Bullwinkle Entertainment Inc. site for additional bands, musicians, shows, updates etc... As with all their previous albums, Carver City was produced by the band’s guitarist Chad I Ginsburg. The album was recorded at Studio CIG in the band’s home state of Pennsylvania and mixed by Ginsburg and Phil Nicolo at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA. Some of the eleven tracks set to appear include: “Hellions On Parade,” “The Boardwalk Body,” “…And She Never Returned,” “Karmaworks” and “Woe Is Me.” Singer Deron Miller comments, “Literally all the things that have been keeping CKY strong since our last album - the undying hardcore support of our fans, our unorthodox musical approach and a brand new partnership with Roadrunner Records - have restored an en- Jess, Deron, Matt, & CIG (Chad I Ginsburg) thusiasm within our band that has never been this extreme. Sobriety, hard work, patching up inner turmoil and a love for what we do has undoubtedly made this the most collaborative and focused CKY effort to date.” Ginsburg concurs: “The album is more inventive and more layered than our past releases, with the most melodies, textures and riffs of any CKY album. It is by far the most inspired album we have ever made.” According to Miller, Carver City carries with it a “dark summer vacation vibe,” nostalgic of the band members’ childhood trips to the East Coast beaches. “The fabled town of Carver City has a history of bad luck and misfortune, all the while giving the impression that it’s a pleasant family getaway. (GMI) announced today that WMGK-FM will now provide exciting new technology which enables listeners to access and hear the station’s stream on their iPhone with the touch of a button. In addition to WMGK, the application, developed by Jacobs Media, is also available to listeners of Greater Media’s WMMR-FM, as well as Radio 92.9 FM WBOS in Boston, MA; WRIF FM in Detroit, MI; 95.9 FM WRAT in Point Pleasant/Belmar, NJ and 94.7 WCSX in Detroit, MI. iPhone One Touch Access is unique because listeners now have the ability to directly access a station’s audio stream instead of having to access a directory. In addition, the station’s logo becomes an icon within easy reach right on their iPhone. The application also allows the station to provide its HD2 channel under its single icon/logo. “The iPhone is rapidly changing the nature of mobile communications, and we strongly believe that our stations have to be available on every platform our listeners are using. This application is the only one designed from the listener’s point of view,” said Tom Bender, Greater Media Senior Vice President and General Manager of Greater Media Interactive. “It’s incredibly easy to download and even easier to use; you simply take your favorite station with you.” “Everyone knows that the key for radio is to get its streams on mobile devices, and the iPhone is the most popular, buzzworthy mobile device,” said Jacobs Media General Manager Paul Jacobs. “With this application, stations will not only be able to stream on the iPhone, but listeners will be able to access the stream with a touch of the station’s icon on the device, instead of scrolling through lists of stations.” Greater Media was the first radio company in the United States to purchase the One Touch application. S. “We were formed in 1977 and have been doing shows ever since. Blues Thursdays kind of spun from that back in 1995 when this was known as A.J’s. There’s a certain type of On Thursday nights at McStews Irish market for this music. I tend to bring Sports Pub in Levittown something in national acts but also some local crazy is happening. People from all over talent as well. We have a good loyal and the area are singing the blues and they energetic crowd that comes out. Some love it. Since 1995 the Bucks County have been coming here since we started Blues Society has been putting on these and we even had marriages come from amazing shows featuring the best Blues people meeting here. It’s an older type acts locally and nationally to packed crowd however we do pull in some crowds. They’ve done over 700 of these young people as well. It’s been very shows on Thursdays and hold the honor interesting. Since Mike and Tom bought of being the oldest Blues Society in the the bar, McStews is now the place. For world. I went there last night to see for something to last this long we must be myself and to talk with Bob Settelen doing something right. We have a mailing who’s the Assistant Director for the B. list over 2,000 and we’re internationally Blues Thursday was awarded Best Of Philly by Philadelphia=2 0Magazine as Best Urban Blues Club. We were the first to play Blues in Pa. Our shows are top notch professionally done productions and we do everything ourselves. We’re a non profit organization for the preservation of the Blues. The music gives you a certain feeling and people don’t realize that it’s the root for Rock n Roll even Rap music. A lot of musicians have brought it to the forefront such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Walter Trout, Jimi Hendrix. They extended it to other genres and age groups. A lot of the acts we bring in are newer types of Blues acts and whoever is still out there surviving. Some national acts that played here were Little Sammy Davis who played with Muddy Waters, Eddie Shaw who played with Howling Wolf, The Nighthawks with Greg Allman, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Some of the local acts were The Buicks, Mikey Jr, Blues Deluxe and Flaming Harry. We’ve also showcased newer local acts like Jason Ricci, Gina Sicilia and now Brooke Shive & The 45’s here as well. Gina’s based out of Newtown, Pa and has really made it nationally. We hooked her up with an agency and now she’s touring all over the world. The regional acts usually come from New York, Delaware and Jersey. With the amount of shows we do we try to keep it fresh so it’s not the same bands all the time or the same songs. We usually do three 50 minute sets starting at 9:30PM to 1:30AM. It’s hard to book every band that comes in her e because I only want the best for our crowds and they’re very receptive to great performers. I go through all the promo packages that are sent in. I can tell by the way it’s put together and how they’re producing themselves what kind of act they’ll be when they play here. We do a Halloween show that’s going on it’s 32nd year. Our annual picnic usually held in July draws about 1,200 people and features 7 national and regional acts. I came here around 1979 and then I became a stage manager, production manager and worked my way up to where I am today. I’ve had a full time DJ business for over 20 years which allows me to do this on the side. We’re beginning to bring in younger crowds and that’s why I’m booking younger performers like Brooke Shive here tonight. A lot of the older performers are dying off and we need some new talent to Page 23 keep the Blues alive and well.” Concluded Bob. After my conversation with Bob ended I sat and watched Brooke perform with her band for the first time at McStews. Judging by the ovations she received from the packed crowd the Blues will be alive and well for a long time thanks to amazing singers like her. She took complete control of the room and lead us all on a journey that we didn’t want to come back from. I never thought the Blues could feel or sound this good. Her voice became the eyes into her soul and we loved everythi ng we saw that night. Brooke was at peace on that stage and we were just glad that she allowed us to be a part of it. Come check out this great place for yourself on Thursdays and bring a friend or two. On April 19th it’s their annual Spring Foot Stomper featuring national recording artist Guitar Shorty and on April 23rd come join Eclecto Groove recording artist Jason Ricci.
