Saint Ignatius Wildcats ‐ ABOUT THIS GUIDE
This guide was meant for use by media who follow
the Saint Ignatius Wildcat Football program. We
appreciate your continued work to report about the
successes of our athletics program. I hope that this
guide will help to make following Saint Ignatius
football a more enjoyable experience for you.
This completion of this media guide would not have
been capable without the help of numerous people.
One main contributor was Ed Daugherty, from
whom I definitely learned a lot. His expertise in
formatting was a phenomenal help in putting this
guide together. Without him contributing, this guide
would not be what it is.
I certainly have to thank former president of the
Broadcasting Club, Mike Watts, because his advice
has not only made this media guide great, but also
has helped me to become a better person. Having a
friend and mentor like him is something that I will
always be grateful for.
Eddie Dwyer’s articles help to do justice to the 2010
season. It tells the story of more than just the game.
It tells the story of the team – its growth
growth, its failures
failures,
and its many successes. It is truly remarkable to
have a professional writer in our athletic
department, and his passion for reporting about our
athletes is unparalleled. Tim Hudak’s Wildcats!

The coaching staff has continued to provide
information about themselves and the players that
makes this guide as in depth as it is.
The athletic department – Rory Fitzpatrick, Jennifer
Fight, and Sean O’Toole – deserves credit for
allowing me to produce this guide for your use.
Of course, none of this would have been possible
without SSID moderator Jeff McCormick. His
tireless efforts to help the broadcasting and Sports
Information groups at Saint Ignatius deserve great
praise. He has been with me in every step of this
process, helping to make this guide what it is, and
he has continued to mold me as a broadcaster.
Also, thanks belong to Greg Ziton and John Fanta
Finally, I would like to thank my family for always
being there for me and supporting my efforts in
everything I do.
For those not listed here, my apologies (there is
only so much room).
Once again, let me take this opportunity to welcome
you to another season of Saint Ignatius Wildcat

About Saint Ignatius High School
MEN FOR OTHERS
CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
Saint Ignatius High School is a
Catholic school in the Jesuit
tradition. As such, the school
challenges its students to become
involved in service activities in the
school community
On September 6, 1886, Bishop
Richard Gilmour and Fr. Michael
Zoeller, S.J. saw the realization of
their dream of a Jesuit boys school in
Cleveland. Located on the near west
side of Cleveland, Saint Ignatius
College was opened with an initial
enrollment of 75 students. Saint
Ignatius College was a 6-year school
in the European tradition.
Saint Ignatius' largest student organization (composed of only
juniors and seniors) is the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer
Society (an organization that provides pallbearers to those
without family or friend to carry them ot their final resting
place).
The Labre Ministry sends students out to give food to the
homeless, but also to spend time with the homeless in our
commuity.
Saint Ignatius was the first to sanction a Sophmore Service
Program in the school's curriculum.
The Arrupe House is open almost every day of the week with
programs like the Homework Club, where Saint Ignatius
students sepnd two hours with the children of the Ohio City
neighborhood.

THE MEANING OF 'A.M.D.G.'
Ad maiorem Dei gloriam
For the Greater Glory of God
BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
In 2008-2009, Saint Ignatius was named a 'Blue
Ribbon School of Excellence" byt the United States
Department of Education. Saint Ignatius has also won
the award in 1984-1985.
While many schools chose to leave the
city over the years, Saint Ignatius has
remained at its original location in the
Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland. In
1924, Saint Ignatius College was split into
a Jesuit high school and a Jesuit
university. Saint Ignatius High School
remained at the corner of West 30th
street and Lorain while John Carroll
University moved to University Heights.
The school's athletic teams began to
thrive following the Great Depression.
Many great Ignatius football and
basketball teams played under legendary
coach John Wirtz in the 1950's and
1960's. Off the athletic fields, Saint
Ignatius was nationally recognized as a
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and
local service activities helped to stabalize
the Ohio City neighborhood.
By receiving the award in 2009, Saint Ignatius was the only Catholic high
school and one of only two private high schools in the country to be honed by
the Department of Education.
Only 314 schools were given the distinction of being a "Blue Ribbon School" in
2008-2009. Of the 314, only 19 were in the state of Ohio and only 6 were in
Northeastern Ohio.
The Blue Ribbon award is judged by a series of national standardized tests,
including the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, plus the Ohio Graduation Test.
Those four letters are packed with meaning and inspiration.
It's an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Ad Maiorem Dei
Gloriam , which means “For the greater glory of God.”
Having twice been named a Blue Ribbon
School of Excellence, earning numerous
championships on the playing fields and
receiving local and national acclaim for
the school's service programs, Saint
Ignatius High School celebrates 125
years of excellence in Cleveland.
ALMA MATER
The phrase serves as the motto for the Society of Jesus, the
order of priests that founded and still run Saint Ignatius High
School.
Our famed Alma Mater graces
Every shrine within our hearts
St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, is credited
with coining the phrase now represented with A.M.D.G.
throughout the West 30th Street campus—and interwoven in
the fabric of every Saint Ignatius student and athlete.
With her unforgotten faces
And the faith that she imparts
Years in passing cannot sever
Ties of new days from the old.
A.M.D.G.
We're Ignatius men forever
As we hail the blue and gold

WILDCATS WILL TURN TO THEIR VETERAN DEFENSE
WHILE AN INEXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE DEVELOPS
By Eddie Dwyer
www.ignatius..edu
From Tom Forrestal in the early 1950s, to Brian Dowling in the '60s, Oliver Luck
in the '70s, Joe Pickens in the late '80s, Scott Mutryn, Dave Ragone and Tom
Arth in the '90s, and Bryan Panteck, Nate Szep, Brian Hoyer, Rudy Kirbus and
Andrew Holland in the new millennium, Saint Ignatius High School has produced
an array of exceptional quarterbacks
And the names mentioned above, some legendary and all successful, only
make up part of that long and storied list of Wildcat signal callers.
We have a nice core of quarterbacks, and for our system that's important, Head
Coach Chuck Kyle '69 said "It's no secret we're rather quarterback-oriented on
offense."
The quarterback area is very solid this year, Coach Kyle continued. "We were
inexperienced last year and worked up into it as best as we could. But this year,
we have Eric Williams [and] Matt Hoyer did it last year as a starter for nine
games and we have Mike LaManna, who is now a junior and improved nicely
last year, and Stephen Alexander.
Williams (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) moved to
Cleveland from Portland, Oregon last winter,
where he was the starting quarterback for Jesuit
High School as a junior. He helped lead Jesuit to
the state semifinals by passing for 1,405 yards
and 13 touchdowns. “Eric is an accurate passer
and he can run the football,” said Coach Kyle of
the young man. “Eric has shown in practices and
in scrimmages that he’s a threat, both running and
throwing. And in 21st century football, that’s a
Hoyer is a 6-4 senior who threw for 1,600 yards in 2010. and LaManna is a lefty
who did a solid job as the starting quarterback on the Wildcats' undefeated
junior varsity team last fall.
Saint Ignatius' receivers are led by 6-5, 240pound senior tight end Blake Thomas. A young
man who is staying loyal to his commitment to
The Ohio State University and Buckeyes head
coach Luke Fickell, Thomas emerged on the
varsity scene as a sophomore. He is not only a
big target with exceptional hands, but a
knowledgeable tight end that can get vertical
down field and create space for the other
Seniors Jake Mooney and Tim McCoy, will lead the wideouts. "You lose games
when you drop footballs," said Coach Kyle. "We want to keep moving the chains
and they do a good job of that." Rocky Zingale is a junior wide receiver who will
contribute significantly to the passing game and senior wideout Clay Bishop,
who can handle all of the wide receiver positions and, as Kyle emphasized, is
very handy and reliable.
Saint Ignatius, which is coming off its first sub-.500 season since 1982,
graduated heavily along the offensive line. Coach Kyle and Wildcats offensive
line coaches Adam Rini '99 and Rory Hennessey Jr. '01 have been putting in
more than their share of extra hours mixing and matching up front.
Providing the senior leadership on the O-Line will be center and captain Zach
Lozar (6-2, 260) and left tackle Trevor Herak (6-5, 250). Left guard Clayton
Cassidy (6-2, 245) is another senior who had a great offseason and is bigger,
stronger and has gained more confidence. Juniors Steve Franko (tackle) and
Mike Cray (guard) have the ability to play on both sides of the ball and Coach
Kyle said they are catching up nicely along the right side of the offensive line.
Among the offensive linemen rotating in are seniors Anthony Latina (6-3, 273)
and Dennison Crowell and promising sophomore Jimmy Byrne (6-4, 260).
Since the emergence of All-American quarterback Joe Pickens in 1988, the
Wildcats have put a huge emphasis on the passing game. However, Coach
Kyle's success has also been built on a strong and reliable ground game.
Danny averaged over 5 yards per carry last
season, said Kyle of returning senior tailback
Dan Grace, one of the captains this fall.
"Danny has very good vision. He sees those
seams, is a very good cut-back runner and
has good speed."
The hard-nosed and versatile Grace will be
complemented by one of the top juniors in
Northeast Ohio - running back/safety Tim
McVey. McVey is a strong kid with a great
burst of speed.
Other names to remember in the Wildcats' backfield are juniors Mike Gibbons (60, 200) and Daniel Way. Mike is a kid who personifies toughness and blends
that trait with field vision, balance and second- and third-efforts.
Saint Ignatius was very young on defense last season and that is expected to
pay huge dividends this year. "Along with the experience, you add the strength
and speed in becoming veterans," said Coach Kyle.
Along the defensive front, the Wildcats return senior end Mike Ryan (6-3, 235),
senior tackle Ed Cleveland (6-1, 250) and senior nose Brendan Holland (6-0,
240). Junior Kevin Kavalec (6-3, 230) is, in Kyle's words, a very good defensive

Seniors Rustom Khouri, James Sheehan and Kevin Ryan head up a tough and
savvy group of linebackers. Supporting those three will be junior LBs Brett
Bendokaitis and Nick Chapek.
The secondary will be led by the gifted and humble Svetina (6-2, 220), who was
in on 163 tackles during his All-Ohio season, including a remarkable 95 solos.
"Obviously, we're even expecting more from him," said Coach Kyle of Svetina.
"And I think we can. Mike's capable of stepping it up a little more."
Senior free safety Chad Aerni (5-11, 190) returns as the hard-nosed quarterback
of the secondary. Senior corner Adam North has a nose for the ball and keen
reaction skills, and juniors Conor Hennessey and Tom Fanning are competing
for the other corner back spot. Hennessey has also stood out as a receiver
during camp.
Senior Ben Feys and junior Zach Baker bring strength and athleticism to the
secondary, senior Dan Jones is back from a knee injury and McVey can also
play as a deep safety, move up near the line of scrimmage and, of course,
create havoc on special teams.
Saint Ignatius' kicking game is in great shape, as
senior Tim Shenk returns as one of the top place
kickers in Ohio. Tim is nicknamed "First-and-80"
by many of his teammates for the ability he has to
send kickoffs in or out of the end zone. Shenk
can be called on to punt, but the main duty will fall
with Senior outside linebacker James Sheehan.
After a season in which the Wildcats made three-hour trips for some of their
games, the schedule is more fan-friendly this year. Starting with the Aug. 27
opener against Detroit Cody High School, Saint Ignatius has six home games five at Byers Field and one at John Carroll University's Don Shula Stadium.

Jeff McCormick '83
Lewis Backus '12
Jeff McCormick '83 , with the club since its beginnings, has been the foundation of
the SIBN. McCormick serves as the club's moderator, and in addition to leading the
Saint Ignatius Broadcast Club, McCormick has also covered football and basketball
as an announcer or as a statistician in the past.
Lewis Backus '12 is entering his third year with the Broadcasting Club. He is a
senior and will be the club's president this year. He has been the lead play-byplay announcer for both the JV ('09-'10) and Varsity ('10-'11) basketball teams
during his tenure with SIBN.
McCormick serves as Saint Ignatius' Annual Fund Director. He brings his own
unique voice to the air, previously working in minor league baseball as a
broadcaster. Focusing on both the financial and broadcasting sides of the club,
McCormick has continued to grow the tradition of the SIBN by finding new sponsors
and helping younger talent to grow and develop as broadcasters. This will be his
fourth year with the group.
In 2009, he served as the broadcast statistician for the football season, and
filled in as the color analyst for last year's football game against Erie (PA)
Cathedral Prep.
Backus is also a rower on the Wildcat crew team and was on a boat that made
it to the national finals in the spring of 2011.
McCormick lives in Rocky River
John Fanta '13
Greg Ziton '13
John Fanta '13 is starting his third year with the SIBN. In his previous two years
with the club he has served as color analyst for the JV basketball games.
For Greg Ziton '13 , the 2011-2012 school year second will be his second season
with SIBN. In his first year with the Broadcasting Club he was color analyst for the
varsity basketball broadcasts. Greg also was a play-by-play voice for the varsity
basketball broadcasts before becoming the full-time color analyst last season.
For the 2010 football broadcasts, John helped with statistics, co-hosted the halftime
show, and filled in as color analyst for last year's against the Lancaster Golden
Gales. Fanta has also helped with the baseball broadcasts during his tenure with
SIBN.
During football season, Ziton was the main statistician for the broadcast team and
served as the halftime show co-host. Ziton wears several media hats at Saint
Ignatius, as he covers several Wildcat sports as a writer for Saint Ignatius' school
newspaper, The Eye.
Fanta was an offensive lineman on the freshman and JV football teams, but will be
in the broadcast booth this season.
HISTORY OF THE SAINT IGNATIUS BROADCASTING NETWORK
ABOUT THE STUDENT SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT
The Saint Ignatius Broadcasting Network is the most extensive student run sports broadcasting network in Ohio. Covering
over 100 games last season, the club began five years ago under Brendan Gulick '09. One year in, the SIBN had a sponsor
and a moderator. National City signed as the first sponsor of Wildcats radio, and Jeff McCormick '83 came aboard as
moderator.
The Saint Ignatius Sports Information Department is a group of students that keep fans and the
media informed. The SSID program allows students to create material for the Saint Ignatius
Athletic website, report on games, work with the media both on game-day and for off the field
requests, and create media guides for the media and fan use.
The 2008-2009 season saw the growth of the SIBN. During the 2009 football season, varsity soccer and hockey were added
to broadcast schedule. With online video sharing partner, EZStream, the club began to videocast hockey, basketball,
volleyball, and baseball games. The group covered 9 football games in 2010 and broadcasted over 100 games in six other
sports. This year's group of broadcasters include Lewis Backus ' 12, Greg Ziton '13 and John Fanta ' 13
The SSID began making media guides in 2009 with the NHSSPA awarding a Gold Medal to the
Saint Ignatius Football Media Guides in 2009 and 2010. In the last three years, the program has
continued to bring all the most important information to those following the Wildcats.
The SSID is responsible for the Athletic Department website content and produces game
programs for most Saint Ignatius home events.
The broadcasts have been heard in all 50 states and 20 countries

Byers Field is the home of four high school varsity football programs – St. Ignatius, Parma, Normandy, and Valley Forge and
is a traditional site for the OHSAA football playoffs.
Wasmer Field, dedicated on October 5, 1968, marks the first on-campus home of the John Carroll University Blue Streaks.
In 2003, the University officially re-dedicated the Athletic Complex and the 5,416-seat state-of-the-art facility during the
tradional Homecoming Weekend festivities.
The seating bowl at Byers Field stretches from endzone to endzone on both sides of the field and capacity is just over
11,000 fans, and sell-out or standing-room-only crowds are routine at the facility. Byers Field features two loges featuring 32
seats each plus standing room. Concession stands can be found under the East bleachers and adjacent to the West
bleachers. A media room is found beneath the west bleachers opposite the press box, and both home and visitors locker
rooms are beneath the home stands.
Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field was opened on September 27, 2003 and celebrates the accomplishments of Blue
Streak alum Don Shula, the former head coach for the Miami Dolphins and the winningest coach in the NFL. The
renovation included new lockerrooms, five coaches offices, a weight room, a training room, and equipment and storage
areas. The main concourse of the new stadium houses the Shula Memorabilia Room, as well as a fully-functioning
concession stand, with the upper levels sporting a new press box and coaches booths.
Recently a large video board, one of the largest in Ohio high school sports, was added beyond the North end zone. The
press box at Byers Field, renovated over the previous two years, is large enough to seat over 30 journalists and
broadcasters.
In 2010, the stadium was named after recently retired Parma School District employee, Bob Boulton. Boulton spent 44 years
working as a coach, principal, and superintendent of Athletics, Health and Physical Education for the Parma City School
District. Boulton, a 1957 graduate of Parma Senior High School, helped the fundraising efforts to turn Byers Field into one of
the premier venues in Northeast Ohio (including new turf, a new scoreboard, a new lighting and sound system, and new
restrooms.)

businessman and entrepaneaur.

Dollinger Field at the Cathedral Prep Events Center is an outdoor muilti-purpose stadium in Erie, PA,
named for Monsignor John Dollinger, the Head Master at the school from 1972 to 1984. The stadium
has an official seating capacity is 1,800 but the overall capacity expands to 2,500 when standing
room and open areas around the field are calculated. CPEC is the second largest stadium in the City
of Erie.
The renovations included the installation of state of the art FieldTurf as the playing surface, a
rubberized, 8-lane track, and a new scoreboard with a 15-square foot video board within it.
In 2007, Cathedral Prep spent nearly $9 million dollars to purchase the site of the former Gunite/EMI
foundry (which closed in June 2001). Prep bought 11 acres near Cherry and West 12th Street for the
overall site of the new Event Center and Athletic Complex.
On March 14, 2006, The Osborne family made the announcement that they had donated more than
$1 million to the capital improvement campaign for the stadium. The Lake Catholic Cougars also
announced the private school in Mentor would contribute monies to the renovations, an amount in
excess of $300,000.
Mentor and Lake Catholic share the facility, now commonly called "The JTO" as their home fields
Prior to the inaugural game on September 10, 2010, the football stadium was dedicated to Monsignor
Dollinger. Dollinger passed away in March of 2010. The Ramblers defeated the Central Tech
Falcons 55-9 in the inagurual game
The Cardinals are 22-3 at home since the renovations were completed prior to the 2006 season, but
one of those loses was to the Wildcats, a 47-7 loss to St Ignatius in 2009.
Until 2010, Cathedral Prep played all its home football and soccer games at the Erie Veterans

St Francis Field is the most-unique facility the Wildcats play in during their season. The stadium is
separated from the main portion of the campus by the five-line main road, St Francis Drive. Players
dress on campus, then walk across the street to get to the field.
66-11
Lakewood Stadium, in it's current location, was built during the 1930's while Franklin D Roosevelt was
in the White House. The stadium is nestled in the Lakewood neighborhood, surrounded by century
homes and full-growth trees, at the corner of Bunts Road and Madison Avenue.
Known as the 'Madhouse on Madison', Lakewood Stadium has been the home to St Edward athletics
since the late 1980's, but today is only the home for the varsity football Eagles.
The 'old school' feel of St Francis Field, built during the 1950's, is enhanced during halftime, as no
lockerrooms are available on the east side of St Francis Drive. Teams spend the intermission
huddled in their respective endzones.
The stadium was converted from a grass field to a synthetic turf surface following the fall season of
1987. The 'Astro-turf' type carpet was in place for 20 years, and the stadium had the more modern
Field Turf installed prior to the 2007 season.
In 1999, more than 16 acres of land was purchased near the current football stadium for future capital
improvements to the athletic field, including the football stadium.
Lakewood Stadium has been the setting for many memorable St Ignatius football games, including
the dramatic 35-34, triple overtime victory, against St Edward in October of 1993.
In 2009, a new bleachers were installed on the vistor side of the field. The latest renovations to the
St Francis Field occurred this year as the home grandstand was demolished and all seating, as well
as the pressbox, was moved to the west of the Stadium
The Wildcats called Lakewood Stadium home from 1988 until 2000, and played their final game as a
'home' team at Lakewood Stadium in 2004 against Washington DC Friendship-Edison

Named head coach prior to the 1983 season, Kyle has directed
the Wildcats to a 277-65-1 (0.809) record, 22 playoff
appearances, 11 state title games and 10 State Championships.
On October 2, 2010, Kyle secured his 276th win at St Ignatius,
passing legendary Benedictine head coach Augie Bossu for most
wins at one high school in Northeast Ohio
Kyle's ties to Saint Ignatius football date back further than his
head coaching tenure. He was an assistant coach from 1973-82
and was a standout, All-City RB for the Wildcats from 1965-68.
From the time he first stepped onto the Saint Ignatius campus as
a freshman, Kyle has experienced only two losing seasons. He
has been a part of more than 400 wins and played or coached in
10 City Championship games and 11 State Title games
As a student, football player,
assistant coach and now head
coach, Saint Ignatius has
always been the right place for
Kyle; Kyle has often said the
opportunity to learn always
exists
During his varsity playing career at Saint Ignatius, the Wildcats
compiled a 18-1-1 record and appeared in two Charity Games/
City Championship Games, winning the 1967 game 21-0 over
Collinwood. Kyle also scored a TD in the 1968 tie game
against Cleveland JFK
After graduating in 1969, Kyle attended Xavier University in
Cincinnati, but when the Jesuit school discontinued the
football program following his freshman year, Kyle transferred
to John Carroll University, where he became a 3-year starter
for the Blue Streaks
Following graduation from JCU, Kyle accepted a teaching
position with his alma mater. He has been coaching

COACHING EXPERIENCE

1983 - 2001 - Defensive Line Coach at St Ignatius
1983 - present - OC / QB Coach at St Ignatius
2002 - present - DC at St Ignatius
Nick Restifo has run a pro-style offense at Saint Ignatius for 30 years. The Restifo offense has
relied on strong-armed, pocket passers, but has adapted to meet the talents of more mobile
quarterbacks. His offense has produced 11 different 2,000 yard passing seasons and 11 different
1,000 yard rushers.
To say that Dan Corrigan '82 KNOWS the Chuck Kyle system is an understatement. Corrigan played for
Kyle as a student at Saint Ignatius and now has served as an assistant under Kyle for almost 3 decades;
the last 10 as the Defensive Coordinator.
Corrigan and the Wildcats use the 3-3-5 formation for the base package, but can shift and have shown a
more traditional 4-3 or 4-4 defensive alignment in certain situations to maximize the blitzes that Corrigan is
known for.
Since his arrival at St Ignatius in 1983, the Wildcats offense has averaged over 29 points per game for
28 seasons.
Restifo has guided an offense that has produced 16 All Ohio selections at the quarterback position
and four of those players have made it to the NFL - Scott Mutryn '94, Dave Ragone '98, Tom Arth '99,
and Brian Hoyer '04.
In 2008, Corrigan was awarded the Assistant Coach of the Year award from the Greater Cleveland
Football Coaches Association. That year, the Wildcats surrendered just 8.4 points per game, shutout 4
opponents and held another 5 to under 10 points. It was the best defensive showing by the Wildcats
since 1995.
As an education, Restifo has taught Spanish for nearly 40 years. Restifo has been married for more
than 20 years to his wife, Susan. They have one daughter, Grace, who will be a senior at Notre Dame
Cathedral Latin this year.
As a player, Corrigan was part of the teams that transitioned from the Senate League to Independent
status.

Franzinger earned the title of Co-Defensive Coordinator and will serve as the 'eye in the sky' for Dan
Corrigan, taking his traditional game-day perch in the press box.
Bryan Massinen '99 enters his 10th season of coaching both at the high school and collegiant levels;
and will serve as the defensive backs coach for Chuck Kyle's staff this season.
Franzinger led the JV Wildcats to a perfect 8-0 record in 2010.
Massinen's coaching ability has led to some trememdous accomplishments from his players - 3 of his
college players have earned All-OAC honors, and 19 of his high school players have earned AllDistrict honors. In 2008, his defensive secondary allowed just 5 passing touchdowns in 15 games as
the Wildcats captured their 10th state championship.
Franzinger played both ways for Chuck Kyle and Wildcats and was a three year letter winner in football as
a running back and linebacker. He scored 6 touchdowns in the 2001 playoffs, including a three TD game
against Warren Harding and had a fumble recovery for a TD against Massillon in the state semi final game
that year.
As a player for the Wildcats, Massinen was a starting DT on the 1997 team that made it all the way to
the state semi final game. He played collegiantly at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea.
Franzinger played college football for the Ohio State University and was part of two Buckeye's Big 10

Adam Rini '99 is set to begin his eighth season as an assistant coach at St Ignatius. Rini is
responsible for the offensive line.
Terry Fergus '72 is now in his 17th season as a member of the coaching staff at St Ignatius.
In his previous seven seasons guiding the line, the offensive line for the Wildcats has become a
dominating force. In 2008, Rini's offensive line schemes allowed QB Andrew Holland to throw for over
2,700 yards as the Wildcats captured their 10th state championship.
Fergus has served in a variety of roles since joining the staff in 1995; he has coached at the freshman,
junior varsity and varsity levels and is entering his second season as the varsity running backs coach.
In 2009, the line cleared the way for a 1,200 yard rusher (bobby Grebenc) and last year, the offensive
line gave up just 10 sacks all season. Three players from last year's squad are on NCAA Division
FCS rosters.
Fergus began his coaching career more than 20 years before coming back to West 30th and Lorain.
Starting in 1975 Fergus he coached at the CYO level for St Bernadette's in Westlake and in 1978 was the
head coach for St. James in Lakewood for 13 years.
As a player for the Wildcats, Rini was a two-year starter at center and was on teams that made it to
back-to-back state semi-final games. Rini went on to play four years on the offensive line for the
Georgetown Hoyas.
At St Ignatius, Fergus is a member of the Board of Regents and was Chairman of the Admissions
Committee (2008-2010). He received the Seal of Loyola Award in 2010.

2009 - present - Wide Receivers Coach at St Ignatius
Rory Hennessey '01 returns for his second season an offensive line coach for the Wildcats. The
Hennessey name is synomous with football for St Ignatius, as Rory's father and three brothers have also
all played for the Wildcats, including Conor Henessey '13, a junior WR on the 2011 squad.
Josiah Kedzior '04 is returning for this third season with the Wildcats coaching staff, acting as the
place kicking and wide receivers coach. Under his guidance, SR PK Tim Shenk kicked a school
record-tying 50-yard FG during the 2010 season
As a player for the Wildcats, Henessey won a state championship in 1999 for St Ignatius, but found
success on the hardwood as much as the gridiron. Hennessey was All-District Honorable Mention as a
senior and scored 3 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Wildcats state championship basketball win
over Cincinnati Elder in the spring of 2001
As a player for St Ignatius, Kedzior was both a WR and PK for two season for the football team.
During his senior year, Kedzior connected on a game-winning 33-yard FG against St Edward in the
annual battle at Lakewood Stadium.
Kedzior also had nine catches against Canton McKinley and tied a school record with 8 PATs against
Shaker Hts in 2003. He received All-Ohio honors that season.
Hennessey went onto play college football at Yale University. In his career at Yale, Hennessey earned
Associated Press Division 1-AA All American status twice (2003 and 2004), All-Ivy twice (2003 and 2004),
was selected a two-time captain and DID NOT allow a sack in his career at LT for the Bulldogs
Kedzior played collegiately at John Carroll and in 2007 kicked the GW FG in OT vs Baldwin-Wallace.
Hennessey signed as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in the spring of 2005, but was
released prior to the season.
Kedzior also played baseball at St Ignatius and has coached youth baseball in the summer.

CLEVELAND, OHIO - Standing just a few yards away from one of the tunnel entrances to Cleveland
Browns Stadium, Saint Ignatius' veteran football coach Chuck Kyle '69 didn't hesitate for a second when
asked to evaluate the performance by Lake Catholic's strong and gifted senior tailback/linebacker Richie
Sanders.
BEDORD, OHIO - Saint Ignatius' outstanding junior safety Mike Svetina will be the first to tell you that the
Wildcats' defense had plenty of work to do after the disappointing opening-night loss to Lake Catholic.
“He's good, there is no doubt about it,” Coach Kyle said. “He's very good. We saw that in the videos. He
has great feet, great vision and speed. He's a great weapon.”
That extra time on the practice field this week came to the fore on Friday night, as Saint Ignatius' firstteam units, behind what their coaching staff described as a group effort, kept the Bedford Bearcats in
check and the 'Cats went on to a 36-17 victory in atmosphere-rich Bearcat Stadium.
And great is no exaggeration, as Sanders had a night most high school players can only dream about in
leading the Cougars to a 28-21 victory over Saint Ignatius in the second game of Saturday's Home Team
Marketing/Browns Charity Game doubleheader.
“You have to give all of the credit in the world to the front six, that's where it starts,” said Svetina of Saint
Ignatius' defensive front. "This feels real good, coming out and making a statement on defense. It is a
good building block for the rest of the year.
Winning the battle of field position by keeping the Bearcats pinned deep in their territory, the Wildcats
rolled up 271 of their 324 total yards in the first half.
Lake Catholic, with the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Sanders rushing for 239 yards on 32 carries and scoring
three touchdowns, including a pivotal interception return of 56 yards, won for the seventh time in its 16
encounters with the Wildcats. It was the first meeting between the perennial powers since 1997, when
Saint Ignatius prevailed in Lakewood Stadium, 52-14.
Junior Tim Shenk got the offense started with an impressive 42-yard field goal and Saint Ignatius, on the
strength of a perfectly executed touchdown off a 35-yard screen pass from junior quarterback Matt Hoyer
to junior tailback Dan Grace, took a 10-0 lead into the second quarter.
Taking the opening kickoff, the Wildcats started at their 17-yard line and, behind the second of two clutch
receptions by junior tight end Blake Thomas, moved to a first down at their 41. On the next play, junior
quarterback Matt Hoyer, who was making his varsity debut, found senior wide receiver David Joseph open
in the seam down the right sideline.
never
sideline The multitalented Joseph looked the ball into his hands and never
broke stride as he completed the 59-yard touchdown. Junior Tim Shenk kicked the extra point and Saint
Ignatius led, 7-0, with 8 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Wildcats capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive with a 7yard TD strike from Hoyer to gifted senior wideout David Joseph and Shenk's second extra point. In
racking up his third touchdown of the young season
season, Joseph made a running catch in the left corner of the
end zone and, knowing where he was on the field, alertly dragged his feet in bounds.
The Hoyer to Joseph six-pointer was set up by a 41-yard pass from Hoyer to junior tight end Blake
Thomas, which came off a third-and-10 from midfield.
With Sanders doing most of the damage with his Barry Sanders-like frame, the Cougars answered with an
impressive drive of their own. It was a march that featured an exceptional one-handed diving catch in the
end zone by senior running back/defensive back Tommy Michals for an 8-yard touchdown.
Saint Ignatius' first-team defense, rising to the occasion all night, set up the next score on an interception
by junior corner back Dan Jones off a tipped pass by junior linebacker James Sheehan.
Two huge turning points took place on the next series. First it was Wildcats All-Ohio senior tailback Bobby
Grebenc (1,205 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns in 2009) being helped from the field after tweaking an
ankle with 10:32 left in the first half.
Following a key reception by senior wide receiver Evan Latsko, sophomore tailback/safety Tim McVey
burst through a hole over the right side and went 14 yards into the end zone. Shenk's extra-point kick was
high and true, and the Wildcats led, 24-0, with 1 minute, 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
Then Sanders struck again with his Pick 6 and, after senior Kresimir Ivkovic kicked his second extra point,
Lake Catholic led, 14-7, with 8:39 to go in the second quarter. The scored stayed that way entering
halftime.
Saint Ignatius left no doubt in the third quarter, scoring on a safety, a 22-yard field goal by Shenk and a 3yard, second- and third-effort touchdown run by McVey that saw his entire offensive line escort him into
the end zone. It was McVey's third TD of the season.
The Hoyer-to-Joseph combination clicked again in the second half, this time a 38-yard touchdown strike
down the right sideline that topped an 80-yard drive and again highlighted the strong arm of Hoyer and the
soft hands and concentration of Joseph. Shenk was high and true on his second extra point and the score
was tied with 7:24 remaining in the third quarter.
For the night, McVey rushed for 72 yards on eight carries and Grace carried the pigskin 17 times for 64
yards. Hoyer completed 11 of 20 passes for 171 yards and was selected as the "Ganley Man Star of the
Game" by Time Warner Cable of Northeast Ohio.
“Bedford came out with no-back, quads, all sorts of different wild formations,” Coach Chuck Kyle said, just
before he turned his attention to Saturday's wedding of his daughter Maureen. “The kids adjusted,
stopped them, we got the ball, had a little drive and kicked a field goal. You know, just get points, keep
going, stay positive. And then the defense had time to do a couple of other adjustments, and I think that
was about it."
Sanders would score two more second half touchdowns, including a 62-yard run. But behind the passing
of Hoyer, the Wildcats covered 80 yards again and cut the deficit to 28-21 on a nifty 13-yard catch and cutback run for a touchdown by sophomore running back/safety Tim McVey. However, the Wildcats woud
get no closer.

LANCASTER, OHIO – Standing almost as tall as the ceiling in the visitors' locker room, Saint Ignatius'
gritty, gifted and good-natured offensive tackle Mason Halter patted the left side of his chest.
CENTERVILLE, OHIO – With 5 minutes and 25 seconds remaining to be played, some of Centerville's fans
began yelling: “Overrated, overrated!”
“We went to it, we went right here,” said the 6-foot-7, 260-pound senior after he and his O-Line
teammates showed the way during a dramatic and efficient game-winning 70-yard drive on Friday night.
“It's all about the heart."
That over-used, hay-is-in-the-barn chant was a bit off center on Saturday night, especially when you consider
it came while Saint Ignatius junior quarterback Matt Hoyer was being attended to on the field after a late hit
and that the Elks entered the game ranked 11 spots higher than the Wildcats in the weekly Associated Press
Division I state football poll.
Providing the seams for All-Ohio senior tailback Bobby Grebenc and giving junior quarterback Matt Hoyer
the time to put his powerful right arm on display, Saint Ignatius' young men up front were near flawless
during an 11-play march that resulted in a 28-21 victory.
If that portion of Centerville's faithful wanted to get a point across to the poll voters, it could have waited until
Hoyer was helped from the field and then the cheer should have been: “We're underrated, underrated!”
The Elks, who had the appearance of a team much stronger than its 10th-place state ranking would indicate,
controlled the better part of 48 minutes and went on to wear down the Wildcats, 31-7, in atmosphere-rich
Centerville Stadium.
Grebenc, who sat out last week's victory at Bedford with a sprained ankle he suffered in the first half of the
opening-night game against Lake Catholic, busted through a comfortable hole over the right side for a 3yard touchdown with 45.8 seconds remaining to be played. It was Grebenc's third touchdown on the night,
as he finished with 88 yards on 21 carries against a Golden Gales defense that prides itself on stopping
the run.
In improving to 4-0, Centerville, led by multi-skilled senior quarterback Jon Overstreet, amassed 484 rushing
yards. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Overstreet accounted for 283 of those yards while operating behind one of
the strongest lines Montgomery County, or any county in Ohio for that matter, has to offer.
“The last hole was huge, it was like 15 yards wide,” said Grebenc.
In what was the marquee game under Fairfield County's Friday night lights, Lancaster wasted little time in
unleashing its highly touted misdirection offense.
“We knew they were going to run the football and we've had trouble with that – people just pounding away at
us,” said Saint Ignatius head coach Chuck Kyle '69, after the 'Cats slipped to 2-2. “First of all, the first quarter
we just played awful
awful, I mean it was 14
14-0. We fought back to 14
14-7, we're running the football and throwing for
some things. But the turnovers, that was ridiculous!”
Taking the opening kickoff, the Golden Gales (2-1) put together an 80-yard drive that ate up more than six
minutes and was highlighted by a 32-yard touchdown gallop by versatile senior wing back Connor Smith.
After a fumble recovery by junior middle linebacker Rustom Khouri thwarted the Elks' first drive, Centerville,
after recovering its own fumble, struck with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Overstreet to senior running back
Tristin Boykin. Senior Chris Kuzma kicked the extra point and the Elks led, 7-0, with 8:01 left in the opening
quarter. The TD strike to a wide open Boykin highlighted an 84-yard drive.
Saint Ignatius senior wideout/kick returner David Joseph gave the 'Cats excellent field position by
returning the ensuing kickoff into Lancaster territory. On a fourth-and-4 from the Golden Gales' 38, senior
wide receiver Nick D'Amico made a nice diving catch at the 26, an effort that saw him reach back for the
ball. After junior tight end Blake Thomas hooked up with Hoyer on a 14-yard completion, Grebenc
powered his way for 8 yards to the 4. Two plays later, Grebenc fought his way up the gut from 2 yards out
and, after the first of four extra-point kicks by junior Tim Shenk, the score was tied with 2 minutes, 34
seconds remaining in the 1st quarter.
With the elusive Overstreet hurting the Wildcats with his ball-faking skills and quickness, and junior running
back Chris Barr challenging Saint Ignatius' interior defense, Overstreet finished off a 77-yard march by scoring
on a 4-yard keeper over the right side with 1:54 to go in the first quarter.
Grebenc would score his 2nd TD of the night on a 2-yard run with 4:38 to play in the third quarter.
The Wildcats, who defeated the Elks, 24-21, in the 1991 big-school state championship game, cut the deficit
to 14-7 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hoyer to senior wideout Fred Davis with 1:49 remaining in the first
half. Hoyer put the ball the only place he could, Davis made a nice adjustment, grabbed it with two hands and
stayed in bounds in the right corner of the end zone.
The final two minutes of the third quarter were a roller coaster of emotions, as Lancaster senior
quarterback Nolan Flowers found the elusive Smith wide open down the middle of the field for a 79-yard
touchdown pass.
Saint Ignatius (2-1) would come right back and silence the Golden Gales' faithful with a 65-yard TD strike
from Hoyer to senior wide receiver Fred Davis with 54.6 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Davis ran
a perfect crossing route and Hoyer put the ball right on the money.
Saint Ignatius' score was set up by some hard-nosed running by senior tailback Bobby Grebenc, a 35-yard
pass from Hoyer to sophomore running back Tim McVey and a 10-yard, sliding catch by senior Nick D'Amico.
Grebenc rushed for 82 yards on 17 carries.
With junior fullback Xavier West doing most of the damage inside, Lancaster would respond with another
clock-eating drive and tie the score on a 1-yard keeper by Flowers with 4:54 left.
It was the Elks' night, however, as they extended their seven-point halftime lead to 31-7 with three
authoritative, time-consuming drives in the second half, capped off by a 35-yard TD run by Overstreet with
5:59 remaining on the clock.
Displaying the composure that is a trademark of a Chuck Kyle-coached team, the Wildcats, answered with
their memorable and authoritative winning drive.
“We put the defense in a horrible situation,” said Coach Kyle. “It was pretty obvious we got pushed (by the
Elks' offensive line)."

STEUBENVILLE, OHIO – As he stood at the podium in the press room, Saint Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle
'69, a man who knows what it takes to be a successful high school football program, spoke about Don
Bosco Prep.
Chuck Kyle '69, one of the most successful high school football coaches in the nation, was, as always,
straight forward as he discussed what could turn out to be one of the toughest setbacks in Saint Ignatius'
rich football history.
“It's a great program, a great team,” Kyle said, after the Ironmen from Ramsey, New Jersey defeated his
Wildcats, 33-6, in the “Rally in the Valley” USA Today Super 25 /Massey Challenge at Harding Stadium
late Saturday afternoon.
“The defense played a good game, they really did,” Coach Kyle said, moments after his Wildcats were
defeated by the Mentor Cardinals, 18-7, on a wet and dreary Saturday night in Byers Field. “Offensively,
we made many mistakes. Obviously, we're disappointed.”
The Ironmen (3-0), who have now outscored their 2010 opponents, 101-26, did exactly what they
accomplished the previous two weeks by taking command early against the Wildcats.
Mentor, a winner over Saint Ignatius for just the third time in 11 meetings, held a 7-0 lead after a first half
that saw the Wildcats commit three turnovers – an interception and two fumbles. The Cardinals scored on
a 42-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mitch Trubisky to triple-threat senior Colton Wallace in the
second quarter.
After Saint Ignatius (2-3) grabbed some momentum on a diving interception by junior Chad Aerni off a
deflection by junior Adam North, Don Bosco regrouped.
The highlights for the 'Cats in the first 24 minutes were the two interceptions by junior cornerback Dan
Jones. Saint Ignatius' defense was solid, especially when you consider the excellent field position Mentor
enjoyed in the first two quarters.
Sparked by a 46-yard run by senior tailback Paul Canevari, the Ironmen took a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard
keeper around the left side by senior quarterback Gary Nova and an extra-point kick by junior Aidan
Murray. Canevari's set-up run came off a first-and-15 from the Ironmen 11.
Ball-handling mistakes continued to stymie the Wildcats in the third quarter, as an errant pitch rolled out of
the end zone for a 9-0 Mentor lead. The Cardinals, on the strength of a 27-yard field goal by Greg Klisuric,
led, 12-0, entering the 4th quarter.
The 6-foot, 220-pound Canevari struck again, as off a little juke step he burst over the left side, cut to the
middle and outran the pursuit for a 58-yard touchdown. Murray's kick was high and true, and Don Bosco
led, 14-0, with 2 minutes, 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Saint Ignatius,
46-yard
Joseph, was threatening late in the third
Ignatius behind a 46
yard reception by senior flanker David Joseph
quarter with a first-and-goal at the 9. But three plays later, the 'Cats threw another interception.
Canevari, who finished with 257 yards rushing, has taken over the Ironmen ground game after playing
defensive end and linebacker last season. He was selected as the game's outstanding player.
The 'Cats appeared to be in business after a Tyler Kette interception return of 22 yards put the ball on
Ironmen 33. But after two incomplete passes, the threat stalled at the Don Bosco 28.
The Wildcats, who were playing without injured starting linebackers James Sheehan and Rustom Khouri,
got back in the game on a 55-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Matt Hoyer to senior wide
receiver Fred Davis, a play that saw Davis go high in the air along the right sideline, come down with ball,
cut across the field and outrun the pursuit into the left corner of the end zone. Tim Shenk's extra-point kick
was high and true, and Saint Ignatius trailed, 12-7, with 11 minutes, 27 seconds remaining.
Kette made his presence felt again when he sacked Nova, forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the
Saint Ignatius 47. However, the Wildcats gave the ball right back on the next play, as junior defensive
back Kyle Sakowski came up with the first of his two interceptions.
Just when the 'Cats appeared to grab the momentum, Mentor took it right back with its decisive 82-yard
march, an authoritative drive that was keyed by Wallace.
The Ironmen, who are now 123-10 under 12-year head coach Greg Toal, tacked on nine more points in
the second quarter. They converted a blocked punt into a safety and, behind a steady diet of Canevari,
scored on a run of 14-plus yards by Canevari with 45 seconds left in the first half. Murray extended the
lead to 23-0 with his third of four PATs, and it stayed that way entering the third quarter.
With Wallace and senior running back Ricky Hanzlik doing the damage on the ground, the Cardinals went
back in the driver's seat on a 3-yard keeper up the middle by Wallace with 7:36 left.
Sparked by Wallace's 116 yards, rushing and receiving combined, Mentor finished with 294 offensive
yards. Saint Ignatius totaled 218 yards.
Don Bosco Prep settled the issue in the second half on a 25-yard field goal by Murray and a 10-yard
touchdown pass from Nova to junior wide receiver Leonte Carroo. Nova scrambled to his left on third-andgoal from the 10, stayed upright thanks to two missed tackles and found Carroo in the end zone.
Linebacker Kurt Laseak led the Cardinals' defensive charge with four sacks, a caused fumble, a fumble
recovery and an interception.
Senior Joe Greco did a respectable job in facing a strong, quick and athletic Ironmen defense. Despite
pressure, he was able to make key connections with wideouts David Joseph and Nick D'Amico and junior
tight end Blake Thomas.
“Mentor was doing a nice job of shifting its (defensive) fronts a little bit,” said Coach Kyle, who emphasized
that the 'Cats' inability to execute a check off at the line of scrimmage led to the safety. “It's a learning
process there,” he said.
Joseph, who managed some nice catches against Coach Toal's quick-to-close, heavy-hitting secondary,
prevented the shutout with a crowd-pleasing 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 6:33 to go.
Several of Don Bosco's players sought out David after the game and acknowledged his gutsy play.
“Matt (Hoyer) was coming back (after sitting out last week with an injury) and he was rusty. In trying to do
check offs, that started causing some confusion. So that's something we have to grow with. The youth
showed up a little bit.”

“They're a dangerous team,” Coach Chuck Kyle said of a program that is renewing its football rivalry with
the Wildcats on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Byers Field. Although Cathedral Prep has competed against Saint
Ignatius in basketball and baseball the past two years, this will be the first meeting on the gridiron between
the schools since 2003.
Saint Ignatius' gritty and gifted senior wide receiver/kick returner David Joseph said he “thrives on these
type of games,” games he and his teammates must have if their playoff aspirations are to become a
reality.
Saturday night on Parma's Byers Field in Robert M. Boulton Stadium, Joseph ignited the early offensive
fire that led to a 47-7 victory over St. Francis High School from Athol Springs, NY.
The Wildcats (2-4), who lead the all-time series, 5-1, defeated the Ramblers in both 2002 and 2003 by
scores of 28-0 and 24-21, respectively. You have to go back to the 1930s to chart the other four meetings,
with Cathedral Prep's victory coming in 1932, 33-7.
The Wildcats (4-4) brought it in a hurry against the Red Raiders (2-5) on Saturday night, scoring 20 points
in the first 12 minutes.
Joseph combined with junior quarterback Matt Hoyer on a 15-yard scoring play, junior tailback Dan Grace
scored on a 28-yard run over the left side and it was Hoyer-to-Joseph again, this time a 39-yard fly
pattern.
“Their line goes both ways, that's something we feel is a plus for us,” Coach Kyle said. “Defensively (for
Cathedral Prep), it's a four-man front. But they will blitz and they will twist from all over the place. They try
to cause confusion. They'll lock on man coverage, get up in your face, run with you and try to make
something happen that way.
In playing a little more than two quarters, Hoyer completed 7 of 9 passes for 190 yards and three
touchdowns, Grace rushed for 66 yards and two scores, and the quick and elusive Joseph complemented
his TD receptions with three punt returns that totaled 103 yards and gave Coach Chuck Kyle's team
excellent field position in the early going.
“We have to be able to pick up the twists and the blitzes and make it a positive for us. We hope that they
blitz and we hope that they twist, because we'll react to that and have a good play. That's our mentality.”
Sophomore safety/running back Tim McVey flashed his promising credentials early and often by coming
up with a sack and
and, on the next play
play, bursting through the line of defense
defense, blocking a punt and scooping
up the ball for a 5-yard touchdown return.
The 'Cats climbed from 17th place to the 15th spot in the weekly Joe Eitel Football Computer Ratings. The
top eight teams in each of the state's 24 regions at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs
playoffs.
Saint Ignatius, dominating the first half, turned back the Ramblers from Erie Cathedral Prep, 48-19, on
Saturday night in a non-league football matchup on Byers Field in Parma's Robert M. Boulton Stadium.
After tall and talented junior tight end Blake Thomas hooked up with Hoyer on a 21-yard score off a flag
route, Saint Ignatius led, 34-0, at halftime.
The Wildcats, who snapped a three-game losing streak, turned to a strong ground game in improving to 34.
Saint Ignatius closed out its offensive barrage with a 2-yard scoring run by Grace in the third quarter and a
55-yard touchdown by McVey in the fourth quarter, a play that saw the brother of Saint Ignatius two-time
All-Ohio linebacker Scott McVey '10 power up the middle, break a tackle, elude another would-be
defender and turn on the jets.
Senior tailback Bobby Grebenc, who committed to Brown University this past week (see the corner's story
on 10/6/10), scored two of his three touchdowns in the first 24 minutes. Junior tailback Dan Grace rushed
for more than 100 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
“Timmy has excellent speed and he's a tough kid,” said Coach Kyle '69. “The upperclassmen respect him
quite a bit.”
Saint Ignatius, which outscored Cathedral Prep, 35-6, in the first two quarters, also struck early on a 15yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Matt Hoyer to senior wide receiver David Joseph and a 35yard interception return by senior linebacker Tyler Kette.
Among the 'Cats' other highlights were a key first-half interception by senior cornerback R.J. Previts and a
second-effort 73-yard catch and run by senior tailback Anthony Mascia off a screen pass from Hoyer.
Cathedral Prep dropped to 3-3.

CINCINNATI, OHIO – Providing all of the computer gurus are correct and all of the numbers add up,
one of the greatest runs in the history of Ohio high school athletics came to an end late Saturday
afternoon on Ballaban Field in St. Xavier Stadium.
Saint Ignatius, winner of a state-record 10 Division I state championships, including an Ohio-best five in
a row (1991-95), experienced its first sub-.500 season since 1982 after losing to the undefeated and
nationally ranked Eagles, 33-10, in Parma's Byers Field.
Field position told the story of the early going as the Wildcats couldn't move the ball after junior safety
Mike Svetina, who is having an outstanding fall, came up with a leaping interception at the Saint
Ignatius 8-yard line.
It marks the first time in Chuck Kyle's remarkable 28-year career as head coach that the Wildcats (4-6)
closed their season below the .500 mark
Forcing the Wildcats to punt from their end zone, the Bombers turned the short field into a 26-yard field
goal by senior kicker/linebacker Sean Duggan with seven minutes, 53 seconds remaining in the first
quarter.
“If someone told me 28 years ago that I would have only one of these, I'd take it,” said Coach Kyle '69,
whose career record of 277-65-1 also includes three national titles (1989, '93 and '95) and 13 Region 1
championships, including nine consecutive regional crowns from 1991-'99.
Shutting down the Wildcats' running game, St. Xavier again pinned Saint Ignatius deep and, following
another punt, the team from the Queen City took possession at the Wildcats' 44. Four plays later,
senior quarterback Max James powered his way over the right side and into the end zone for an 11yard touchdown run. Duggan's extra-point kick was high and true, and the Bombers led, 10-0, with 5:09
to go in the opening quarter.
The 'Cats had their monents in the second quarter, including a 56-yard punt by senior Peter Russo, a
fourth-down defensive stand that stopped St. Xavier inches short of a first down at the Saint Ignatius 21
and a second-effort catch and run of 16 yards by senior tailback and co-captain Bobby Grebenc.
However, Saint Ignatius also botched a couple of punt returns in the first 24 minutes and had some bad
luck when Grebenc went down with an injury with 5:27 left in the half and junior Tim Shenk's 45-yard
field goal attempt, which appeared to heading right down the middle of the uprights, got caught in a stiff
crossing wind and went off to the left.
Shenk put his team back in the game when he delivered a 46-yard field goal with 8:50 left in the third
quarter. The 3-pointer was set up by a 48-yard return by senior wideout David Joseph with the secondhalf kickoff and a nice catch and run by Joseph off a quick hitter from junior quarterback Matt Hoyer.
St. Edward, which trails the all-time series against Saint Ignatius, 25-21-1, snapped a four-game losing
streak to the Wildcats. The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead on a Terrelle Bates TD run
Saint Ignatius, which completed one of the most demanding schedules in its football history, responded
with an interception by standout junior safety Mike Svetina, an effort that led to a 50-yard field goal by
junior Tim Shenk with four minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
After Shenk drove another kickoff out of the end zone, St. Edward followed the lead of its highly
regarded offensive line and pushed its advantage to 14
14-33 off another 80
80-yard
yard march
march.
Following a short punt, the Eagles took over at the Saint Ignatius 33. Two plays later, Burke connected
with Chris Connors on a 29-yard touchdown pass.
The Wildcats' young and injury-riddled defense, which put forth a stronger effort than the final score
would indicate, came up with a goal-line stand and stopped St. Edward for no gain on fourth down from
the Saint Ignatius 1-yard line.
It was a short-lived booster, however, as on the very next play the Eagles' defense recorded a safety.
The Bombers, aided by an illegal-participation penalty (12 players on the field) as they were punting the
ball to the Wildcats and an encroachment penalty on Saint Ignatius, got some breathing room on a 4yard touchdown run by junior tailback Conor Hundley with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter.
For most of the first 24 minutes, the Wildcats couldn't sustain an offensive attack. They managed just
40 yards of offense in the first half.
A 37-yard field goal by Duggan, which came off the second of three interceptions by St. Xavier's active
and athletic secondary, pushed the Bombers' lead to 19-3 early in the fourth quarter and Coach Steve
Specht's team withstood a 25-yard catch and scoot for a touchdown by Joseph with 2:04 left to be
played. Joseph's TD capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive.
Joe Greco, who replaced starter Matt Hoyer late in the second quarter, engineered an impressive nineplay drive on the first possession of the second half. It was a sustained effort that included a 44-yard
run by junior tailback Dan Grace off a draw play, and was highlighted by a fourth-and-goal from the 3
that saw Greco roll right and find junior tight end Blake Thomas in the end zone. Shenk's extra point
was high and true, and Saint Ignatius trailed, 23-10.
The second half was more than a little physical, as senior quarterback Joe Greco, who replaced Hoyer
with 8:13 to go, was shaken up by helmet-to-helmet contact as he was sliding to the ground in an
attempt to get a first down. The play happened right in front of Saint Ignatius' bench and Coach Kyle
couldn't understand why what appeared to be an obvious penalty wasn't called.
The Wildcats completed 17 of 40 passes for 261 yards, including a 2-for-4 performance for 16 yards by
Greco. However, Saint Ignatius netted -minus 15 yards on the ground in 15 rushing attempts.
With Mr. Momentum edging so slightly to the Ridge Road side of Byers Field, the Wildcats forced a
punt and took possession at the St. Edward 46.
Momentum is a fickle friend, however, and, after it was ruled that Thomas fumbled during a play in
which he appeared to be down before the ball came loose, the Eagles were awarded possession at
their 43.
From there, Coach Rick Finotti's team regained control with a 10-point fourth quarter.

OHSAA and Playoffs
The Harbin Rating System
A former newspaper staffer and cash register repair man from
Willowick, Jack Harbin, is essentially responsible for the playoff format
used by the OHSAA to decide it's football championships for the
previous 40 years
Harbin developed a mathmatical formula in the 1960's that is quite
simple - a high school football team earns points for every victory (or
tie); then also receives secondary points for every game a defeated
opponent wins (or ties). No points are awarded for a loss on either
level
The most important factor in this equation is the 'size of school'
component. Teams are awared more points based on the enrollment of
boys at the opponent's school.
The OHSAA used the Harbin Rating System on a trail basis in 1971
and in 1972 with the approval of the Ohio High School Football Coach
Association and the OHSAA, the Board at the OHSAA officially
implemented Jack Harbin''s Rating System as the offical determination
of playoff-bound teams. No longer would sports writers or polls
determine the state football champion

divisions and only 1 qualifying team from each of the four regions within
a division. A total of 12 teams made the post-season in 1972.
Also, the third-level points, awarded the first two years the Rating
