It is my honor to officially welcome Melissa Miller as our new President of MPA. She is
taking the lead with many exciting new opportunities for MPA as well as many traditions.
Please see her letter and information throughout the newsletter to see what is in store for
2011. Let’s give her a warm welcome as she takes the reins!
Starting this new year has been a time of great reflection for me as I end my term as
President of MPA. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of such a great
community of psychologists. MPA has grown so much since I started as President in 2008.
We have more than doubled our membership, developed a website, generated a very active listserv for
communication among the members, celebrated over 50 years as an active professional association, and
established MPA as a non-profit association with the IRS.
For me, personally and professionally, MPA has been a resource for coming to know many fabulous colleagues
and professionals in our community. I have observed that our members truly enjoy the opportunities for
professional learning and understanding developments in our mental health community as well as times to
socialize and network with psychiatrists and other MPA members and simply have fun together. It has been very
rewarding to be a part of the growth of the association and to help reinstate such great traditions as the
Psychiatrist/ Psychologist networking event. I am thrilled to continue to be a part of a great group of
professionals and look forward to seeing many of you at future events. Thank you all for your kind support and
ongoing participation in MPA.

Happy New Year! 2011 should be an exciting year for MPA members, and I look forward
to serving as President! The past few years have seen tremendous growth for our
organization and members, and I would like to personally thank Holly Savoy for her
dedication to MPA during her presidency. As we look at the year to come, we are hoping to
make MPA events as accessible as possible. We are happy to have already planned all of
the meeting and social events for the year. You will find the calendar in the sidebar, under
Save the Date section so be sure to look over the schedule to plan your attendance in
advance.
A new twist to MPA starting in 2011 is having each year focus on a trend/topic current to our field. The theme of
MPA this year is focused on psychologists integrating their work with Primary Care Physicians. We are pleased to
have the spring meeting focus on the role of sleep in mental health. Presenting will be Dr. Kristin Daley, who
graduated from UNCC's health psychology program, and is the Director of Sleep Medicine Services for Charlotte
Eye Ear Nose & Throat Assoc.
Our fall meeting will be Cheryl Masters, PhD and Jerry Nymberg, M.D.
presenting on Collaborative Care. They have been working at CMC testing a new model of patient care, where
the psychologist and physician are located in the same office and collaborate on treatment for clients. This is a
new trend in mental health nationally, and we are excited to have this team present on their experience. In order
to help MPA members integrate with local PCPs, we plan to create a paper bound directory of psychologists to be
distributed to physicians as a tool to aid in referring. This directory will only include current MPA members, so
be sure to renew your membership by 6/1/2011 to ensure being included!
Another idea that will come to life during this year is the ability for us to share documents and forms easily with
other MPA members. We will be developing a GoogleDocs account where each member can post and have
access to this information. We are also looking into possibly offering continuing ed programs. There will also
be new and expanding committees which will offer more opportunities to get involved and take leadership
positions. Community outreach, diversity, mentoring, and social/meeting planning are current committees that
are open for volunteers. Please think about contributing your time, energy, and creativity to MPA during this
upcoming year!
On top of all of the benefits to our individual practices that MPA plans to offer this year, we have several social
events planned! Networking at our happy hours is a great way to strengthen your connection to our community,
and to relax and have fun. I look forward to seeing you throughout the year!

MPA Spring Meeting: April 7th, 6:30 pm
Behavioral Sleep Medicine: An Introduction Speaker: Kristin Daley, Ph.D.
The Spring MPA meeting will be held on Thursday, April 7th at 6:30 with the presentation beginning at 7:00pm at The Cornwell Center at
Myers Park Baptist Church (2001 Selwyn Ave, Charlotte, NC 28207). Dinner will be provided. The meeting is open to MPA Members
only. The presentation will include a brief explanation of the role of sleep in mental health. The speaker will review basic assessments
commonly utilized for sleep disorders and the various presentations of sleep symptoms. Behavioral sleep interventions for insomnia and
circadian rhythm sleep disorders will be reviewed, and the steps for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) will be discussed.
Finally, the speaker will present ways to recognize that the patient may need referral for specialized sleep evaluation. The talk will conclude
with case presentations, as time permits.
Dr. Kristin Daley is the director of Sleep Medicine services for Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Assoc. She has a practice within CEENTA
that is primarily focused on Behavioral Sleep Medicine, which incorporate behavioral approaches to a broad spectrum of sleep disorders,
including Insomnia, Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders, and adherence to the treatment of Sleep
Disordered Breathing. She completed her Ph.D. in Health Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she had
previously completed her Masters degree in Clinical/Community Psychology. Her dissertation work incorporated physical activity and
cognitive approaches in the treatment of comorbid insomnia and depression. Personally, she has been a long-term resident of Charlotte, NC
and is the mother of three young children. She enjoys physical exercise and time outdoors in her free time.
MPA 2011Mentoring Program
The MPA Mentoring Program is in its 3rd year, open to MPA members who
are recently licensed and/or new to Charlotte (both within 7 years). We meet every other month at the Mentor’s office location. On January
24th, we had a terrific start to 2011 at the offices of Nona Patterson, Ph.D., and Melissa Miller, Psy.D. in Cotswold. Seventeen “New to
Charlotte” or “Early Career” Psychologists attended the discussion about opportunities for involvement in MPA and about area
Psychiatrists. On March 7th, eight of us had an encouraging discussion with Joe Parisi, Ph.D. about how to develop and maintain a
successful self-pay practice. Thank you to all the mentors for donating your time and sharing your knowledge. Our next meeting will be
May 16th at the office of Faye Sultan, Ph.D., the Director of University Psychological Associates. The Mentoring Program will then break
for the summer and resume meeting in September. Feel free to contact use with any questions or feedback about the program.
Nadya Klinetob, Ph.D. [email protected], Co-Chair representing New to Charlotte Psychologists (NCP)
Michelle Collins, Ph.D. [email protected], Co-Chair representing Early Career Psychologists (ECP)
MPA Continuing Ed Pilot Project:
MPA is hoping to launch a Continuing Education pilot project this
year by purchasing DVD videos from PESI which will be available for viewing in small groups. We will be surveying membership interest
on the membership renewal form to identify our first pilot program and will also be looking for volunteers to host the viewing either in their
home or office. Given the length of the programs - the viewings may go over a series of weeks rather than all at one time. This will be a
great opportunity to expand your knowledge base and have some small group connection with other MPA members with similar interests.
Kristina M. Murphy, Psy.D. has volunteered to spearhead this project and we are also recruiting for additional support (see Volunteer
Opportunities on the Membership Application).
Joint Psychology - Psychiatry Networking Event
The annual Psychiatrist/Psychologist
networking event, held January 31st continues to be one of the most popular events of the year. We received very positive feedback from
both the psychologists and psychiatrists that attended.
Welcome PINGG - Goodbye E-vite
Due to problems experienced with e-vite recently MPA has decided to
move to a new event planning website.
Membership Data:
As MPA’s membership continues to grow it is
interesting to look at some of the demographic

Men’s Anger Management Group: This is an open-ended, process/psychoeducational group that focuses on men’s anger issues.
Specifically, we will discuss how anger issues interfere with relationships, work, and family. We will work on how to express anger in a
healthier/less intimidating manner; as well as the underlying issues of anger. Our society teaches men that expressions of anger are
appropriate, while expressions of sadness, or grief are not. However, men’s anger can have a negative impact on all aspects of their lives
if not handled appropriately.
Group Type: Men, ongoing, process oriented/psychoeducational group.
Cost: $60 per session/week. Location: Elizabeth Neighborhood, near uptown: 1501 E. 7th Street, Suite 7

Men’s Therapy Group: This process-oriented group is designed to help men become more self-aware and overcome emotional
isolation.Topics discussed include problematic relationships; managing anxiety and depression; communicating emotions, especially the
appropriate expression of anger; being assertive, and dealing with grief. The primary focus, however, is learning about oneself through the
interactions and relationships with fellow group members. While research has shown that men are less likely than women to discuss
personal problems, in an all male group participants can discover the universality of men's experience and feel less alone and isolated.
