9:00 a.m. to Noon
Message from Tom Carstens,
E xecu tiv e D irecto r
Thank you for making the summer season a great one. From The Short
Run on a Long Day (5K), which had its largest participation – 393, popular
early childhood/youth camps (Tiny Tot Summer Camp, Stage Play Musical
Theater Back-To-School Volleyball Camp), a great turnout for the 4th
of July Celebration (games, fireworks and a live band) to the Back to
School Bash, it was truly a fun summer.
This fall, the Park District, in conjunction with the companies of Heller
and Heller and Leisure Vision, will be conducting a Community-Wide
Survey/Needs Assessment. The purpose of the survey/needs assessment
is to allow you, our residents, to address issues relating to your satisfaction,
current usage, needs for parks, recreational facilities/programs and
funding of the Frankfort Park District. Results from the survey/needs
assessment will be used to develop an action/strategic plan that will
direct the Park District though the next 3-5 years. If you are selected
(at random) to participate, please complete and submit the survey/needs
assessment. Your participation is valued.
You will notice in this brochure, the Park District has many programs/
events that will keep you and your family busy this fall. This includes
popular special events such as Halloween Haunting, the Annual Fall
Craft Show, Wine Tasting and the Mother/Daughter Spa Day. Numerous
program opportunities from preschool/early childhood classes,
dance and youth athletics, to adult sport leagues and adult/senior
programs/trips also are offered.
To further enhance our customer experience, the Park District now
provides free wireless internet at the Founders Community Center.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and staff, thank you for your
continued support. We look forward to a great fall. If you have any
questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact
me at [email protected] or 815-469-9400.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX HITTING AND DEFENSE CLUBS
Just because your season is over, doesn’t mean you should
stop training. The Chicago White Sox Hitting & Defense Clubs
are coming to the Frankfort Park District. In this 4-week class,
led by Elite Academy instructors, players will learn the same
absolutes the White Sox players do. Get ready to be challenged!
The White Sox Hitting Club will present your hitter with a stepby-step approach to hitting like a Major League player…The
White Sox Hitting Club will cover plate coverage and stance,
stepping into a hitting position, hand path and lower body
mechanics. There are hitting “absolutes” that must be present
in each at bat to be successful. These “absolutes” make all
the difference. We know them and will teach them to you.
The White Sox Defense Club will focus on the essentials of
throwing and catching the baseball as well as fielding
groundballs and fly balls. To be a complete player you must
learn to defend. This class is exactly what you need to earn
that starting position at higher levels of baseball.

PERSONAL TRAINING
TONING
while others lack the knowledge or the motivation. Perhaps, like
many, it is your New Year's resolution to lose weight or you have
an important event coming up like your prom, high school
reunion, wedding, or vacation. You made a promise to yourself
that you will lose 10, 20, or 30 pounds before the event. But
instead of using the event as your goal to get in better shape,
perhaps you should try to change your thought process and get in
shape for a long-term event - the event of life itself. Several different
training options are available; one on one, buddy training, or
group training and include 8 one hour sessions. Before registering,
please contact Tasha to set-up a consultation at (708) 955-7349

GET FIT WHILE YOU SIT!
This class is perfect for “Older Adults” or as a “Starting Point” for
beginner exercisers. This class helps battle against osteoporosis,
joint and back pain, and falling – just to name a few. When we
build muscle, we build bone. When the muscles that support the
spine and the joints are strong and flexible, we have less pain
and risk of injury. As we age, our ability to balance declines.
Since the consequences of falling for older adults can be severe
– even fatal – balance training is essential. The friendly group setting
allows older adults to stay socially connected. Exercises are
performed seated and/or standing using chairs, weights, and
other equipment, which are provided for you. No previous

TREE MEMORIAL DONATIONS LIVING TREE PROGRAM
Charitable Giving Options
The Frankfort Park District is proud to continue a Living Tree
Program to plant trees in parks for all Frankfort residents to
enjoy. Through this program, you can honor or remember a
person, an event or an organization by having a tree planted
in their name. A tree can be given to celebrate someone’s
birthday, to memorialize a deceased, commemorate a special
event in your life or recognize an organization and their
accomplishments.
A donation of $350 will purchase a tree in a park designated
by the donor or honoree. Trees will be planted in the spring
and fall each year. In addition, the year, along with the name
of the person, event or organization being honored, will be
proudly displayed at the base of the tree on the Living Tree
Plaque in the Founders Center. This program benefits the
community as a whole, and the tree can be enjoyed for years
to come.
For all information regarding the Living Tree Program, contact
the Park District office in the Founders Center at 469-9400. The
Park District will assist you in selecting a park where trees are
needed.

areas and are considered to be in the cost range of this program:
* Red Sunset Maple
* October Glory Mapl
* Autumn Blaze Maple
* Norway Maple
* White or Pink Flowering Crab Apple

* Bradford Pear
The Park District deems certain species of tress to be inappropriate

BECOME A PERMANENT PART OF THE PLAYGROUND!
Several years ago, Operation Playground installed a picket
fence at Fort Frankfort that not only provides safety and security
for our children but offers the community a way to remember
or honor a loved one or organization. For a $35 donation, you
can have your name or a name you choose engraved on
one of the wooden pickets in the fence. This is an opportunity
to become a part of this amazing play space that was designed
and built by volunteers in the community. Years from now your
children and grandchildren will enjoy searching for your family names
and will remember that you were part of this community event.

Customer Service Statement
The Frankfort Park District is committed to providing
responsive, friendly, courteous and excellent service
to our customers.
PARK IMPROVEMENT NEWS
This summer, the Buildings and Grounds department has been applying
fertilizer and weed control to many of the local parks. Also, our
licensed staff has been monitoring and treating ponds to control
weed and algae growth. The most problematic weed issues occur in
ponds which are not naturalized, that is, those that do not have a
buffer of native plants surrounding the body of water. These native buffers
filter water entering the ponds, stabilize eroding shorelines, prevent
geese from traveling through adjacent lawns, and are a great eco-friendly
addition to the parks.
The buildings and grounds staff has not only been busy keeping our
parks looking beautiful, but also making sure our buildings and parking
lots are in great condition. The Founders Community Center recently
had major repairs on its aging roof. There were many areas that were
deteriorating so large scale repairs that had to be made to prevent
major damage to the Founders Center. Additionally, the asphalt was
replaced at the Founders Center parking lot. Later this summer all the
Park District lots will be re-striped for parking.
The Buildings and Grounds department has a team dedicated to
maintaining and improving the landscaping in all the parks. You may
have seen them out and about in the parks de-weeding, spading,
mulching, and planting. We are striving to make our beautiful parks
even better! If you have any comments or questions about your local
park, please visit our website at frankfortparks.org and click on the

"I am honored to have been able to enjoy my career for so

forward to spending more time with my 6 grandchildren and

Dance Instructor Chris Johnson retires -
After more than 40 years of teaching dance lessons to local
area children, instructor Chris Johnson will be handing her
dance shoes over to her daughter, Tammy Johnson.
"Ms Chris" started her teaching career at age 16 when she
taught classes for her own dance teacher in exchange for
extra lesson time. At age 18, she began the first dance program
at the Park District in her hometown of Hickory Hills. Students
began asking for more challenging and advanced classes
which lead to turning her basement into a home studio.
After downsizing to a townhome many years ago, the Park
Districts seemed like the perfect outlet to continue sharing her
passion for dance with others. Scores of children have passed
thru her classes at the Alsip, Burbank, Chicago Ridge, Frankfort,
Mokena, New Lenox, Oak Lawn and Peotone Park Districts.
Chris began classes at the Frankfort Park District Puent
Community Center in the summer of 1996 with just 21 students.
Ten years later, registration soared to 180 participants in the
ballet, tap and hip-hop/jazz program. The past 15 years have
seen many changes and improvements for our talented
quality dance classes while adding her own creative and
fresh perspective to the Park District.”
Following in her mom’s footsteps, Tammy has been no
stranger to the dance floor.
She grew up with dance
being a big part of her life.
She had a natural talent
and was willing help her
mother with costume design,
scenery and choreography.
She continued her education
by attending various dance
conventions and seminars and also performed professionally
in several holiday performances. “ I am very excited for this
opportunity and to bring new ideas and material to the Park
District. I know it will be a smooth transition for me and the students and I look forward to a great year” said Tammy.
Although Chris is retiring as a dance instructor for the Park
District, she will still be active in youth programs. Chris will continue
to teach some of the parent/tot classes such as Wiggles and
Giggles, Tot's Art Masterpiece and Dino Stomp.

Needs Assessment. Heller and Heller, Inc. and Leisure Vision
have extensive experience in conducting community-wide
survey/needs assessments for park and recreation agencies
and municipalities state-wide and nationally.
The comprehensive survey will allow residents to address issues
relating to satisfaction and current usage; potential resident
needs for parks, recreation facilities/programs, trails; funding;
additional issues; and demographic characteristics of the
community. Results from the survey/needs assessment will be
used to develop an action/strategic plan that will direct the
District’s programs, facilities, services, staff and parks through
the next 3-5 years.
The method of the survey will be a combination of random
sampling of mail and phone surveys. The survey will be
conducted this fall.

ICE SKATE AT MAIN PARK THIS WINTER!
Due to the huge success of the ice rink at Main
Park last winter, the park district will be adding a
second ice rink for public use. “We hope to have
one rink designated for open skating and the
other for hockey playing” says Tom Carstens,
Executive Director. “We will also have skate rental
and snow shoe rental available this year along
with concessions” said Carstens. Once the weather
permits, details of skating and concession hours
will be posted on the park district website.
The Park District is still looking for skate donations.
To donate, please bring any gently used adult or
child skates to the Founders Community Center at
140 Oak Street, Frankfort.
