RESTORE Therapy pg. 2 Administrator’s Letter By Mike Schneider August 21st marks the observance of Senior Citi- zens Day. Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14th as it was the day past U.S. President, Franklin Roosevelt, signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988 Ronald Reagan, who was U.S. President at the time, declared August 21st to be National Senior Citizens Day. The observance was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens. Resident Spotlight! pg. 3 Activity Corner pg. 4 parents work. They also become the mentor, comforter, spoiler and friend to grandchildren. At what age is someone considered a senior? That also seems to be changing as our population ages, but with better health. 65 is the new 40, right? So honor seniors on August 21st. Listen to them and learn from them. Go hug a senior! If you can’t find one, I’m available. Because I deal with seniors on a daily basis I believe that there should be a designated day to honor these special people. Now that I’ve past my 65th birthday I think it’s pretty cool to honor folks who have a few years under their belts. In more news, we are pleased to announce and welcome Lisa Kluge! She is the newest member of our staff and family, taking the Community Relations Coordinator position. In the history of the world older people have had special significance in their communities. When you become too old to be an effective hunter for your tribe, your job becomes to teach the children the history and traditions of the tribe. In our society seniors sometimes become caregivers to their grandchildren when Lisa, married to the local Fire Department Chief, is a very active member in the community. She also has extensive experience in senior care, eight years to be exact. Let’s all welcome Lisa to the Heritage Health team. We are happy to have you! RESTORE Therapy Intern By Becky Griffitts This is the second summer our therapy department has had the opportunity to provide an internship to an Illinois College student who has interest in pursuing a career in therapy. As an intern here, the student is awarded with the experience of learning about rehabilitation of permanent long term and rehab to home patients. Anthony Cook, an athlete at Illinois College, wishing to pursue a career in physical therapy, joined our department this year. He has played football for many years, which has resulted in many injuries and rehabilitation after the injury, all which sparked his interest in physical therapy. He was thrilled after knowing the opportunity to intern here at Heritage Health was available. During his ten weeks here, the knowledge he has gained has finalized his decision that pursuing a degree in physical therapy is the right choice. He has learned after observing a variety of patients return to their prior level of function that everyday is a new day and hard work pays off! The most rewarding part of the experience for him has been to watch a patient begin therapy struggling to stand up to ending therapy walking further than they have for years! Anthony states that his internship here at Heritage Health has been amazing and he’s very thankful to all the employees here that have made this such a valuable experience! Each of the therapists here would like to wish Anthony the best of luck in his future! We would love for him to return as part of our therapy team as he would most definitely be a valuable addition! We are proud that you call Heritage Health your home. Resident Spotlight pg. 3 (Pictured is Esther D. Morrison.) Resident Spotlight by Kathy Sims Esther Dorothea Morrison, was born in Arnold, IL. She had one brother and two sisters. She attended and graduated from Prairie schools in Arnold. In high school, Esther started baking cookies for bake sales, community gatherings and family functions. After high school Esther worked for Dr. Newman’s office as a Doctor’s assistant. She stated, “I learned a lot from that woman, I had a very high regard for her.” She also worked as a bookkeeper at Passavant Area Hospital for twenty-one years before retiring. After retirement, she continued to bake and became very popular in her neighborhood. She was known as the “Cookie Lady.” The Jacksonville newspaper wrote an article on the “Cookie Lady” and she even put a recipe book together. She keeps a copy in her room. Staff members enjoy looking through and exploring Esther’s famous recipes. Somehow, Esther did find time to marry her husband George and celebrate, having two children, Jim and Janis.
