A new comedy inspired by the works
of Noel Coward, THE COTTAGE is
set in the idyllic English countryside
in 1923. A tale of sex, betrayal and,
oh yes, love, unfolds when Sylvia
Van Kipness decides to expose
her love affair to her husband and
her lover’s wife. The true meanings
of fate, identity and marriage are
called into question as a surprising,
hilarious web of secrets unravels
in this ridiculous—and potentially
murderous—romantic comedy.
Rated: Naughty! (Ages 12+)
A group of unemployed steelworkers
in Buffalo, New York come together
to raise money by taking off their
clothes in a one-night performance,
emulating the touring Chippendalesstyle companies that have bewitched
the town’s working women. Down
on their luck and emasculated by
the women in their lives, the men
overcome body issues, sexist views,
bigotry, and plain old fear to find
strength and confidence in each other,
ultimately taking it all off with pride.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own
family experiences (and novel),
LITTLE WOMEN follows the
adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and
Amy March as they grow up facing
the absence of their father as
he serves in the Civil War. Even
though the musical’s score is
contemporary, the beloved story
of the March sisters is timeless and
explores the ongoing issues the
girls face, like young love, hope,
ambition and longing.
There is great heart to THE FULL
MONTY, and the themes expressed
in the show, about taking charge of
one’s life and following one’s dreams
are great lessons for all of us. The
pop/rock score featuring fantastic
lyrics is funny and tuneful.
Now, this wonderful narrative
has been brought to life as an
exhilarating new musical filled with
glorious music, dancing and heart.
This powerful score soars with
the sounds of personal discovery,
heartache and hope — the sounds
of a young America finding its voice.

THEATRE ASPEN
FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Paige Price
L E TTE R S
For those theatre fans among you, the words “Defying Gravity” represent the soaring climax
in the mega-hit musical Wicked. At this point in the play, our heroine proclaims, “It’s time
to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap.” This season, Theatre Aspen is making the
same kind of proclamation, albeit with a call to action borrowed from the Aspen Chamber of
Commerce: Defy Ordinary.
The muscular directive in that phrase is thrilling to embrace, so this year we are excited
to co-opt ACRA’s slogan as we set out on a new course for Theatre Aspen. Built upon a
new foundation (quite literally), Theatre Aspen leaves its 30th Anniversary season behind,
and looks ahead toward our next 30 years. Our vision for the future is to become a top
destination for theatre artists and patrons, with a continued commitment to excellence.
The three pillars of our work will include our summer season, our education program (which
includes our wildly successful new Apprentice Program) and a New Play Series, that is so new
it’s not even branded yet, wherein we will invite incredible artists to come and work in Aspen,
to develop new projects for the theatre.
As soon as we unveiled our plans for the initiative, an opportunity arose to launch the series
with Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s new musical Alice By Heart. The duo is known for their groundbreaking and multiple Tony-winning Spring
Awakening and they, along with a stellar creative team and twelve young professionals, enthralled an audience at the Wheeler Opera House
in May when they presented a sneak peek of their workshop. Aspen is the perfect place to bring something to life: its remote beauty, elevated
appreciation for culture and our community’s thirst for knowledge and experience are unsurpassed. It really does Defy Ordinary.
We are grateful to our board, to the artists and to this community, which embraces new things and takes chances. We’re excited to see
what happens with “Alice,” and proud to have been part of her development. And to quote another lyric from Wicked, “Everyone deserves
the chance to fly!” We hope to provide that opportunity for apprentices, for artists and for audiences. We intend to Defy Ordinary with
unabashed, ambitious style.
FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Lisa Baker
WELCOME TO THEATRE ASPEN’S 2014 SUMMER SEASON IN THE HURST THEATRE!
This summer, our advertising campaign is asking you to “Come Closer.” And while you
might not want to get too close to the actors in The Full Monty (at least during the most
revealing scenes), we know you’ll be delighted with your choice to come closer and enjoy
superb theatre in one of the country’s most unique and intimate theatre environments.
With our productions of The Full Monty, Little Women and The Cottage, Theatre Aspen has
something for any audience this summer!
Our ambitious season comes on the heels of one of the most impactful summers in
Theatre Aspen’s 31-year history. To say that our 2013 season was a success would be an
understatement; Les Misérables was the talk of Aspen (and beyond) with patrons coming
back time and time again to see remarkable talent take the stage. Fully Committed had its
run extended as performance after performance sold out. And, You’re a Good Man, Charlie
Brown engaged and delighted scores of children and adults alike.
Our productions weren’t the only shining stars of last summer. Theatre Aspen launched our
apprentice program, thanks to the generosity of John and Jessica Fullerton. The program, which drew hundreds of applications from college
and graduate students around the country, brought 10 aspiring theatre professionals to TA for the summer to learn their trades from skilled
professionals.
The success of the season and our ambitious goal to become a destination for top theatre talent led us to a bit of “soul searching” over the
last nine months. The ever-committed TA Board “retreated” to Basalt for a two-day strategy session. Led by board member Don Short, expert
strategist and former CEO, we got down to creating TA’s 2020 plan. Of course, our primary focus will be to maintain high quality productions.
Our apprentice program will continue to foster the talents of those aiming to build a career in theatre. And, our Theatre Aspen School (TAS)
after-school programs and summer camps will offer a creative home for even the youngest of performers.
However, we also decided that there was more that Theatre Aspen could do to cultivate the creative process. Theatre Aspen should be known
not only for staging excellent productions but also as a home for creative development at all levels.
To that end, the first new initiative is our “New Works Series.” Generously underwritten by Barbara and Franklin Carson, this series is
committed to bringing playwrights, directors, composers, lyricists and actors to Aspen. In the inspirational environs of our little town, theatre
will be created. And we know that Aspen’s audiences will offer a discerning but supportive environment for new works to be developed. Our
inaugural event brought Duncan Sheik, the composer of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, and his team to Aspen in late
May to workshop his latest musical Alice By Heart.
Changes keep coming at TA, thanks to our dedicated board and generous community. If you enjoy what you see, and I know you will,
I encourage you to come back for another of our stunning productions, tell your friends about us, join our National Council, or donate!
We invite you to Come Closer to Theatre Aspen.
Enjoy the show!

Lives life with
sincerity & intent.
Does business the exact same way.
I’ve raced the Iditarod, piloted a commercial fishing
boat, and performed on stage with Theatre Aspen. It’s not
a typical real estate resume, but it’s a unique one in this
proudly atypical town.
Ed Foran

Ed.Foran @ SothebysRealty.com
Friends and clients have likened my biography to an adventure
novel, but I’ve built my real estate career by predicting and
preventing drama, not courting it. In two decades of business,
I’ve learned that preparation and persistence are paramount,
and I approach every transaction and every decision with
ample quantities of both.
Ultimately, the best decision I ever made was to raise my
family in Aspen: no town comes close to its extraordinary
mix of community and culture. As an audience member,
performer, and stage-dad, I appreciate the special role that
Theatre Aspen has played in creating a unique home –
and a unique life – for my family, my friends, and so many
of my clients.

to the aspiring theatre professionals who make up our 2014 Theatre Aspen Apprentice Program (TAAP!). Generously

programs and the professional theatre world. Apprentices practice their craft alongside the season’s professional
actors, designers, directors and staff with the goal of growing both professionally and personally. They also participate
in Workshops and Master Classes, assist with our education programs, and learn about the inner workings of a
professional non-profit arts organization. TA is excited to welcome them to the Roaring Fork Valley and encourage you
to get to know them throughout the summer season!

We can make a party, a party.
Create an outdoor event that’s more splendor in the grass, less
picnic-with-warming-trays.

The Molly Campbell Conference Center reemerges
after a $5 million renovation project to elevate Aspen’s
meeting experience. Boasting a stylishly new
eco-friendly design, the 5,500 square foot function
space debuts a panoramic rooftop terrace with
360-degrees of mountainous inspiration and flexible
outdoor meeting space. Adding sustenance to the
scenery, the new Pepperjack’s Café serves up casual
fare, pastries and signature cocktails guests can enjoy
fireside or grab-n-go. Elevate your Aspen Meeting
experience. Think The Gant Conference Center.
