University College Ghent
(= HoGent) collaborates with
over 300 universities and
university colleges all over
the world. The international
relations at University College
Ghent are organised in the
Education Office of the Service
Centre, and the faculties. The
link between the Service Centre
and the faculties is maintained
via the international relations
coordinators, one of which can
be found at each faculty.

Registration at University
College Ghent
Upon arrival, international exchange students must go to the
International Relations Office of
the faculty for final registration.
Please contact your faculty for
an appointment if you have not
done so yet.
During this appointment, you
will go through the application
file and receive your student
card. This student card is proof
of being enrolled at University
College Ghent and can be used
at the student restaurants, the
sports centre, libraries, for
computer facilities, all kinds of
reductions, and also to access
your student home if applicable.

of Ghent: The Migration
Counter
All international students without a valid Belgian residence card
must have or apply for a student
residence permit when moving to
Belgium for education purposes.
Depending on your country
of origin (EU/EEA or nonEuropean) and the length of
your stay, different procedures
apply. The residence regulations for EU and EEA nationals
are more lenient.

Depending on your residential address, the Migration
Counter of the Administrative
Centre Zuid or the service centre
of your municipality will handle

offers many services to increase
your chances of success. We
guarantee optimal guidance in
order to determine the study
that is best in line with your
interests. You will be informed
about possible study paths to
facilitate your study progress.
Welcome week
University College Ghent
Before the academic year
starts, we invite all our new
students to explore their new
campus and their new school,
and meet teachers and fellow
students during a welcome
week. We will guide them workshops (ateliers, campus, the
city), and organise information
sessions about the workshops,
theoretical classes, ordering
study books, catering, library,
study guidelines, study costs …
During this week, we hand out
schedules of the programme
and some maps to make sure
students can find everything on
campus. By the end of the week,
the schedules of the lessons are
published on our website.

The Welcome Days for the
exchange students:
17-18 September 2015
Academic calendar
The academic year starts on
the last Monday of September
and consists of two semesters
of 12 weeks each. In week 13,
postponed classes and supervising activities are organised. The
autumn semester ends in January, the spring semester ends in
May. All courses, course-related
activities, work placements, and
so on end in May.
Each block of 12 weeks is
followed by a first examination
period (January and June).
Students who fail to pass in the
first examination period or who
obtain bad marks for particular courses, may enrol for the
second examination period in
September.
Some courses are organised
on an annual basis with a single
examination period in June.
For these courses, a second
examination period is held in
September.

Student card
Upon your enrolment in
University College Ghent, you’ll
receive a student card. This
card can be used for different
purposes:
——Borrowing books and other
material from our libraries
——Discount at the student
restaurants
——Access to several locations at
our university college
——As a debit card which can be
used at the student restaurant
and to make copies
——Discounts at most of Ghent’s
cultural institutions and
museums
——Identification at the
examination!

amount will be put on the card.

The student home is located
approximately 3 kilometres out
of the city centre of Ghent.
All rooms are 12 square metres,
single, and furnished with a
desk, bed, mattress, duvet,
wardrobe and linen cupboard,
bookshelves, small fridge and
pillow. Free internet access is
available in all rooms (LAN).
The toilets, showers, kitchen,
washing machine (€ 2 for 1
washing cycle) and dryer have
to be shared with other exchange students. A minimum
of kitchenware is available.
Room prices and security
deposit: the price of a room in
the student home is € 1125 per
semester, all costs included.
In addition, students need to
pay a € 250 security deposit.
(The deposit is reimbursed
when the students leave the
room in good condition.)

have been reserved for incoming exchange students. The

Reception opening hours:
Students who arrive in Ghent,
can go directly to the student
home Vesalius and pick up
their keys at the reception
desk on the third floor
(office number 3.32).
The opening hours are communicated to the students in the
weeks before their arrival.
Students who arrive outside
these hours can make an appointment before travelling via
[email protected]
Students who arrive after
11 PM or during the weekend
must organise alternative accommodation for the night
as the campus building will
be closed.
Tenancy agreement: upon arrival you need to register at the
faculty where you will be studying and at the city of Ghent.
Your tenancy agreement can
only be signed when you have
proof of both registrations.
Once you are in possession of
both registration documents,
you are welcome to visit us at
the Accommodation Division
(Voskenslaan 38, BE-9000 Gent)
to sign your tenancy agreement.

the University College does not
provide accommodation other
than to exchange students and
Belgian students.

Introduction
Chamilo is an electronic
learning environment that gives
the teacher the opportunity to
create and manage course sites
through a web browser. Each
Chamilo course consists of a
number of items that can be
activated by the teacher. This
means that not all courses look
identical. Students can access
various forms of information,
exercises, participate in discussion forums and groups.

The School of Arts of University College Ghent constitutes an
important cultural hotspot in the

organising exhibitions, concerts,

Atypical cinema on the
Bijloke site that concentrates on
showing films that fall outside
the regular circuit. Classics

Belgium has been an
independent constitutional
monarchy since 1830. Belgium
has an area of 30,528 km² and is
located centrally and strategically in Europe. Two out of three
citizens of the European Union
live within a radius of 350 km
around Brussels, the capital of

In Belgium three cultures
coexist: the Flemish, the French
and the German. In 1980, the
country’s institutional system
was reshaped to accommodate
that reality. Currently, there are
three language-based Communities, which are self-governing
in many important areas such
as education, culture, economy,
agriculture, social welfare and
environment.
Belgium has a maritime climate,
as a consequence of which fog
and rain are common here,
as is snow in winter. The most
pleasant months in terms of
temperature are between April
and October. Temperatures
vary between 10°C and 35°C in
summer and -15°C and 15°C in
winter. Rainwear, warm clothes
and an umbrella will be needed,
but not all the time!

Flanders
Flanders has an area of
13,522 km² and is situated in the
northern region of Belgium. This
Dutch-speaking part of Belgium
boasts about 6 million inhabitants. French is spoken in the
southern part of Belgium, Wallonia, and to a large extent in
Brussels as well. The very small
German-speaking community is
located on the eastern border of
Belgium.
Flanders is in the centre of the
major West European industrial
regions. The dense road, waterway and rail network, four sea
ports and three airports make
Flanders the ideal gateway to
Europe, which is why many multinationals have chosen Flanders
as the base for their operations
on the European market.
Ghent is situated in Flanders,
the northern part of Belgium,
50 kilometres from Brussels,
Bruges and Antwerp.
It is important to realise that the
language spoken (and lectured)
in Ghent is Dutch, the language
of twenty million Dutch and Flemish people. Dutch is similar to
German and related to English.
There are only some marginal
differences between the Dutch
spoken in Flanders and that in

Ghent, originally named
Ganda, arose at the confluence
of the two rivers Scheldt and
Lys. In the late medieval times
it was the second largest city in
north-western Europe.
Ghent is situated 55 km to the
west of Brussels and covers 156
square kilometers. It is the capital of the East Flanders Province
and the second largest city
of the region Flanders, which
is one of the three regions of
Belgium. The greater metropolitan area of Ghent has 515,000

In 1537 Emperor Charles
V, who was born in Ghent in

to get around the city is riding a
bike or walking. You can rent a
bicycle at the ‘vzw StudentENmobiliteit’. You can rent a basic

strong and practical bicycle lock

to discourage thieves. Bicycle
thefts happen every day.

Public transport in Ghent
Public transport in Ghent is
well organised. Buses and trams
will take you to every possible
destination in and around Ghent
from early in the morning until
late at night. Each ride on a tram
or a bus costs € 3 when you
buy it on the spot, When you
use a ticket via text message,
you pay € 1,80 but if you buy
a 10-ride card a ride will only
cost you € 1,40. You can save
up to 20% when you buy your
ticket in advance at the presale
points of ‘De Lijn’ (De Lijn shop
or newspaper shops) or at a presale ticket machine. The tickets
of De Lijn can be used in all the
Flemish cities except for some
buses in Limburg.
Once you get on the bus or
tram, do not forget to validate
your card in the yellow boxes.
If you will be using buses and
trams for a longer period, it will
be cheaper to buy a seasons
ticket. Depending on your age,
you can buy a “Buzzy Pazz”
(- 25) or an “Omnipas” (+ 25).
Both passes are valid on any
tram and/or bus of “De Lijn”,
even in other cities.

Museum Site, St Peter’s Abbey,
