Oldham County Horse Project Newsletter January/February 2016 Amanda Spiva CEA-AG/NR P: 806-267-2692 I am excited to announce that Oldham County 4-H is starting a horse program. A few of you know what all is available in the horse program but those of you who don’t I explain further in this newsletter. If any of the things that are offered interest you please contact us here at the office. The district judging contest is in April. We will be starting practices in February. If you are interested let us know and be on the look out for emails with the practice schedule. F: 806-267-0117 C: 940-765-7461 E: [email protected] The program has already had some success with the senior Horse Quiz Bowl Team winning district in November and qualifying for State RoundUp. Left to Right: Lacey Grace Petty, Colton Baca, Jake Baca In the near future look for results from this team as well as others competing at the Ft. Worth Stock Show in Horse Judging; San Antonio Livestock Show in Horse Judging, Horse Skill-A-Thon and Quiz Bowl. Also be on the look out for ride days starting the middle of March through July. These ride days will introduce and better your skills in any riding area that is offered at the State 4-H Horse Show. All the stock horse classes, general horse classes and timed events (ie. roping, barrels and poles.) Educational programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service are open to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information or veteran status. The Texas A&M University System, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the County Commissioners Courts of Texas Cooperating Oldham County Horse Project Newsletter State Horse Show Competitors must qualify through their district in order to compete at this event. You can compete in events like halter, western pleasure, working cowhorse, cutting hunter under saddle, and barrel racing, stock horse events (pleasure, trail, reining, cowhorse) and roping events to name a few. The State 4-H horse show is held each summer. Horse Judging In horse judging, you will compete on a team as you learn to be the judge of a horse show! You will learn all the body parts of a horse, the ideal characteristics of how a horse moves, and determine how to score horses in competition. And to explain how you decided on your scores. You will learn decision-making and public speaking skills. When you get to the senior level of this activity, you could compete in national competitions. Quiz Bowl Quiz bowl is an opportunity to demonstrate all of the information that you have gained through the past year through this project. This is a contest that will help your student learn more about his or her project while getting the opportunity to compete on a state level. It is a team event where you compete against another team and whoever buzzes in first, gets to answer the question. Held at 4-H Roundup each year, competitors must qualify through their district in order to compete at this event. Skill-a-thon The horse skill-a-thon is a great way to showcase all of the knowledge that you gain throughout the project. This contest covers an array of topics and encourages you to really stretch your hardearned information. It is a competitive way to evaluate what you have learned along the way, and a fun way to gain more knowledge regarding your project. Roundup Public Speaking No matter what you do once you are done with school public speaking will benefit you. This is an opportunity to learn valuable life skills through either a speech or a demonstration. It is a fun and comeptitve way to develop usefull skills that will stay with you for life. This is a contest that will help your student learn more about his or her project while getting the opportunity to compete on a state level.
