details on page on page 7
4th Quarter Meeting & Elections
Wednesday, December 17th ♦ 7- 9 pm
at BMW of Peabody’s Service Center
The Fourth Quarter General Meeting will be held at the BMW of
Peabody Service Center, on Wednesday, December 17th, from 7-9
PM. We are excited to have Arjun, owner of UUC Motorwerks as
our featured speaker, so it should be a fun filled evening. The evening also includes elections for next year’s Chapter Officers. Please
come to vote and have a say about what is happening at you’re
Chapter.
There will be a 25% discount (that evening only) on BMW Parts.
If you want to order BMW parts ahead of time you may do so by
calling (978)532-8300 and still obtain the 25% discount when you
pick up the parts the evening of the meeting. You may also order
parts to be picked up at a later date with the discount as long as
they are ordered the evening of the meeting. Jack Woods, BMW
Parts Manager wants to let us know that BMW has a new program
for “tuner parts” specifically designed for E46 and E90 cars. These
parts will be on display at the parts counter, including lots of carbon
fiber items.
Food will be provided by BMW of Peabody with thanks to Rob
Hannafin, Assistant Service Manager who has arranged the meeting. Don’t forget to go the Chapters Website www.boston-bmwcca.
org and register for the meeting. We are trying to provide an accurate head count to BMW of Peabody so they can order enough
food and chairs for the meeting. Your help with registering is really
appreciated.

T
his season is a time for reflection. Thanksgiving is upon us, and
our thoughts are of family and friends. In my case, that also
means thoughts about my BMW CCA family and friends. This
has been a busy year for the Chapter with several challenges that had
to be overcome, as well as many good experiences. When I reflect on
the last year, I think of the things that go on “under the hood” of the
Boston Chapter that make the club so valuable to our members.
Some of the challenges that faced the club were financial, and others were organizational. We have struggled several years to develop
a stable infrastructure for the Boston Bimmer. We now have an organization, led by our editor Rachel Oglesby, that I believe is producing
the premier Chapter newsletter in the country. This month we have
the most advertising support in recent memory, and the October issue
was our first full color issue. You should all be proud, as the Bimmer
is a reflection of our members and the programs we support. We are
also seeing the end of a two year quest by Joe Marko to clean up the
Chapter’s finances and to bring them up to the highest standards of
on-line accounting. He has taken a lot of time away from HMS to
make this happen, and we have the best understanding of our financial position in many years – and, by the way, it is very good.
Joe did face a challenge this year beyond getting the books balanced. The Boston Chapter, along with many other BMW CCA
Chapters, faced a potentially major liability in tax penalties due to an
overlooked IRS reporting requirement from prior years. Joe worked
with a CPA, member Jack Woods, to present the case to the IRS and
received a full abatement of the potential charges. Jack has also graciously agreed to run for Treasurer next year, so Joe can devote his
time to HMS and the driving committee. I am really looking forward
to having Jack on the board in 2009.
One of my monthly columns wouldn’t be complete without a racing report, but I can’t generate too much excitement for the end of
the 2008 season. In F1, BMW ended the year with a whimper as they
were not competitive in the last few races after they had sewn up
third place in the constructor’s championship. In touring cars, BMW
will not repeat as WTCC champions this year, and while competitive
in the BTCC, they couldn’t pull out the championship. In the U.S.,
again competitive, but no cigar. Well as they always say in racing,
wait till next year!
This is the election issue, so be sure to vote for the new 2009 board
members. We have a great slate of candidates, some experienced and
some new, looking forward to making 2009 an even better year for
the Boston Chapter.
Until next month – stay on track! ♦

Candidate for President
John Oglesby: John has been a BMW
CCA member since 1990 and a
member of the Boston Chapter
since 2000. He served as President
of the Boston Chapter in 2007
and 2008 and Treasurer in 2006.
As the Treasurer, John focused
on making the treasurer’s office
more responsive, transparent
and pro-active in Chapter activities. As President,
he has worked to improve the quality and variety of
program options and to improve communications.
If re-elected, he wants to find ways to make the
Chapter responsive to a broader base of members’
interests, expand Chapter membership, expand uses
of the internet, improve communications and build
a broader volunteer base. Before moving to New
England in 2000, John was active in the Michiana
Chapter. Since becoming active in the Boston Chapter,
John has participated in both social and track events
and became a high performance driving instructor in
2006. He is the original owner of a 1988 M3, recently
purchased a 1989 M3 and once owned a 1993 740i.
John says he has owned several high performance
cars, but the M3 has always been his favorite.
Candidate for Vice President & Director of Activities
John Sullivan: John Sullivan,
is the current Vice President &
Director of Activities and has been
active in the Boston Chapter since
1989, serving as Chapter President
from 1991-1995, VP from 19891990, and Director from 1996-2008.
As Director of Activities this year,
John was coordinated most of the Social and Technical
events this year, including: Undercarriage Tech
Sessions hosted by BMW dealers and independent
shops, Dent Wizard Tech Sessions, the Fall Fun
Rally, and the Women’s only Tech Session. He also
organizes the Chapter General Meetings, for which he
consistently recruits nationally recognized speakers.
For the past 12 years, John has also coordinated and
overseen the Boston Chapter’s participation in the
Susan G. Komen Drive for the Cure, which has helped
raise thousands locally to help fight breast cancer.
John always brings enthusiasm to the work he does
for the Chapter, and is looking forward to another
year as Vice President & Director of Activities with
your support.

Larry Barbieri: Larry has
Candidates for Director:
Simon Cooper:
member of Boston BMW CCA
since July of 2003 when he
purchased his first BMW, a
2004 330CICA. After attending a BMW sponsored driving
event, he knew he needed an
Autocross/Track car to abuse
and amuse! So in September of 2003, Jack purchased a 1995 M3 which he ice raced with the
Boston Chapter for the first two winters. Then, in
2004 he attended his first Advanced Driver Safety School and High Performance Driving School
and got hooked. Jack enjoys the camaraderie and
friendships that he has made at track and social
events and has recruited family and friends to
join in the fun. He says he is most impressed with
how knowledgeable members are and how willing they are to share their expertise, on and off
the track. As the owner of Central Business Solutions, a Bookkeeping, Accounting, Tax and Payroll
practice in Peabody, MA, Jack is well qualified
to serve as Treasurer and sees it as his chance
give back to the Boston Chapter. With your support, he looks forward to working with the board
to help improve the financial management of the
club and the general operations, activities and
social aspects of the club.
been a member of the BMW
CCA and the Boston Chapter
for six years, and he was the
Membership Director in 2007 and
2008. He started his involvement
by attending quarterly meetings
and social events, but got hooked
while attending high performance driving schools.
Today he is a high performance driving instructor
and serves on the registrar committee. Larry says
the latter is especially rewarding. Working together
as a team, the committee revamped registration,
built a new website and meets regularly to prepare
for driving schools. As Membership Director, Larry
spends a lot of time marketing the BMW CCA and
the Boston Chapter to other BMW owners and has
personally signed up many new members. He believes
the Chapter can expand its options for reaching new
members including a new member brochure for use
at Dealerships and special outreach activities targeted
at MINI owners. With your support, he hopes to work
on new recruitment strategies and find ways to help
others enjoy all the experiences the Boston Chapter
has to offer.
Simon has been a
member of the BMW CCA since
1999, but has been crazy about
BMWs since 1981 when his
Dad bought an E12 520i while
serving in the Royal Air Force
in Germany. Simon has been
active in the club’s driving events and has progressed
from student to instructor in both High Performance
Driving as well as our Advanced Driving Safety Skills
programs. He is also part of the Registrar team for
both events. Simon believes that the Chapter exists for
the benefit and enjoyment of all our members, a group
with diverse backgrounds and interests. He supports
the continuation of the driver education programs and
social events, but would like to increase the diversity
of programs and the number of participants. In 2008,
Simon served as the Advertising Manager for the
Boston Bimmer and has helped streamline the contract
process. With your support, he will continue to serve
in that role in 2009. Simon feels the Boston Chapter is
one of the most respected in the BMW CCA, and he
would be honored to give back to the club that has
given him great fun and many new friends.

a Chapter Director since 2008
and a BMW CCA member since
1999 when he brought his new
M Coupe. At the time, he didn’t
know how much about the club.
It was only after a knuckleheaded
low-speed spin made him consider
improving his driving performance that he began
enthusiastically attending autocrosses, safety schools,
and track events. Dan now instructs at driving schools
and has worked on the intensive driving school for
intermediate students. He believes that these events
heighten driver awareness and enhance accident
avoidance skills, besides being ridiculously fun. This
year Dan has been an enthusiastic contributor to
the board, spearheading: the use of on-line forums,
enhancements to the Chapter website, a plan to
provide supplementary insurance for driving school
events and improved student evaluation feedback
forms for driving schools. With your support, he
would like to continue his work to improve chapter
programs and online services.
Baer Connard: Baer is the
current Chapter Secretary and
has been an active member in the
Boston Chapter since 1999 and
BMW CCA since 1993. His current
car (and third BMW) is an e46
330i that has undergone extensive
modification in preparation
for driving schools and autocross competition.
Since joining the Chapter, he has been involved
in event management and increasing membership
involvement. He co-chaired the autocross registrar
position in 2004, soloed as chair 2005- 2007. Baer
brings a global perspective to the board having
participated in driving events, Oktoberfest and special
programs in the U.S. and abroad. Baer is dedicated
to the BMW brand and its performance culture, and
with your support hopes to continue his work and
development of the Boston Chapter as the Secretary
on the Board of Directors.
Dan Chadwick: Dan has been
Joe Marko : Joe has been a
member of BMW CCA since
1971 and a member of the Boston
Chapter since 1981. He is the
original owner of a 1973 2002tii
and owns a 2002 MINI Cooper S,
and a 2003 X5 (plus a 2008 SMART
car … but we won’t talk about
that). He has owned a 1988 M6 (which he misses!), a
1997 Z3 2.8 and a 1988 325iX. Joe is the owner of HMS
Motorsport in Danvers, MA, a long time supporter
of Chapter events. Joe has served as President, VP,
Membership Chair, Director, and Treasurer of the
Boston Chapter. He has been co-chair for Drivers
Schools since 2006. As Treasurer, Joe implemented a
new accounting system, on-line banking and bill-pay
and managed getting the Chapter’s Federal and State
tax filings up to date. Joe also increased the use of online payments for social and track events. With your
support, Joe will help transition the new financial
systems to a new Treasurer while continuing his work
for the chapter with emphasis on improving driving
and social events. ♦

t was another shining year for the annual Concours
d’Elegance and Show and Shine. This year the event moved
to a new state-of-the-art venue: Wagner BMW of Shrewsbury, MA. Thanks to Wagner, BMW CCA members and guests
were able to spend a great Fall day viewing some of the newest and oldest BMWs. This year’s competition had several new
entries and included some BMWs we haven’t seen at other
shows in the past. The talk of the event was by far Jack Frederick’s freshly restored 1975 BMW 2002 Turbo. This handsome
car won the People’s Choice award and 1st Place in the Concours. Our new venue provided plenty of room for everyone
to spread out and enjoy some conversations with friends and
listen to some tunes. A local boy scout troop served a great
fresh lunch for everyone, and it gave the Chapter and our
guests a chance to support a community organization. We
look forward to having Wagner BMW host our event again

When the “Service Engine Soon”
Light Is Not Right!
I
by Christo Tinkov
often, it is merely indicating a simple
type of problem (low coolant level, loose
gas cap or oil cap, etc.). When the “Service Engine” light came on in my wife’s
2001 Audi A4, we took it to a local shop
for some other maintenance work and,
thinking the quick code read would be
free, I naively asked the owner to check
what had triggered the light. To my dismay, they charged us $120 to read the
code and clear the light. “But it only
takes two minutes to read the code, how
can it be that expensive?”, I argued. They
claimed they needed a $10,000 computer
to be able to read the code.
While researching the triggered fault code, I found
out that there is a great generic code reader, as well as
a BMW-specific code reader and both can be bought for
a fraction of the $10,000 price the shop had quoted.
magine every time you sneezed or hiccupped,
you had to go see the doctor. It cost you
$120 or so, a few hours of lost productivity,
and probably a lot of worries (good thing the
diagnosis was good and the doctor said
you were are OK!). This, for the most part,
is how the “Service Engine Light” works in
your BMW, except you go to see the dealer
instead of the doctor.
I first saw the “Service Engine Light” on my 2001 325i
just a day or two after I put the first modification in
it – an aftermarket cold-air intake. The warning looked
ominous to me and it freaked me out. Did I just screw
up my engine? And how do I “service” it? I went to
the dealer on the next day and they said the code that
had been triggered was related to an “out of range
parameter: impermissible air range”. I checked the intake again and I was convinced it had been correctly
installed. I knew many other 325i’s were running it and
had no issues with it. The car exhibited no drivability
issues and after a few days, the light disappeared. To
this day, the light still comes back every once in a while
when we get the first cold weather spell each Fall and
then it clears itself out. 7 years, 55 track days, as many
autocross events and 140K miles on the engine later,
the car is still running better than new.
The “Check Engine” light is not unique to BMWs. All
cars sold in the US after 1996 were required to have a
diagnostic system to track emissions-related problems.
This system is called OBDII (On Board Diagnostics,
second generation) and it contains a set of monitored
parameters with corresponding fault codes. Regardless of the vehicle you drive, you have probably seen
the “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon” light
displayed on your dashboard at least once. And similarly, your first reaction might have been to panic or
get frustrated. You cannot know what the problem is
without a code reader because there are literally hundreds of possible reasons for it. Sometimes the light
is alerting you to the real need for a repair, but most

Mac Tools ET50 code
reader, $70 at AutoZone
This tool works with most, if not all, manufacturerspecific codes for domestic and import cars. It is
also capable of clearing all pending and current
codes. This compact hand-held reader is
super-light and it fits easily in the glove
box. As an added benefit, it does not
need batteries. It plugs into the
OBDII port under the dashboard.
At a recent autocross event, my
2008 Z4 M Coupe went into
limp mode, which severely
limits the RPMs and the speed
with which you can rev up the
engine. I was lucky enough to find
another driver who had the Mac reader with them. A
quick read indicated the throttle position sensor had
gone bad so the drive-by-wire throttle system was getting confused about how much throttle I really wanted
(the default answer is “max throttle”, that should have
been an easy guess!). The key thing is, the code description was close enough for me to know that the engine
was OK and that I just needed a short trip to the dealer.
Based on the dealer’s factory code reader, the tech had
also concluded that it was the throttle position sensor.
However, no code reader is absolutely perfect when it
comes to diagnosing the exact issue. The problem did
not disappear after the dealer replaced the throttle position sensor. They were finally able to trace the actual
issue to a chafed wire going into the sensor.
Peake Research R5 FCX-III Fault
Code Reader, $140 at Turner Motorsport
This tool, which is very popular with BMW enthusiasts,
works with the vast majority of BMW models from 1987
to 2006 but you need an adapter
for 2001 and later models. On cars
up to 2000, the reader plugs into
a round port under the hood. The
Peake reader’s advantage is the
codes translate to exactly what
the factory wants the technicians
to know. While most fault codes
will overlap with generic OBDII
codes, some will not and many
will be somewhat more descriptive than those corresponding OBDII codes displayed by a generic tool such
as the Mac reader. The Peake tool also has the ability to
reset the oil service and inspection interval indicators,
preventing more visits to the dealer.
Conclusions
Which tool you get would depend on how you plan to
use it: the generic Mac reader works with most makes
and models; the Peake tool will only work with BMWs
but it will display more descriptive codes, which might
allow you to diagnose the problem better. Both readers
can clear the fault codes but the Peake reader also provides the added benefit of resetting oil and inspection
indicators (on most BMWs manufactured after 2000,
these intervals can also be reset using buttons on the
dashboard). For my intended use, the Mac reader made
more sense. Recently, the “Service
Engine Soon” light started coming
up maybe once a month in my wife’s
Audi A4. It turned out the fault code
is triggered because the catalytic converter has a hiccup every once in a
while and briefly operates “below
the minimum efficiency threshold”.
I reset it each time it comes up knowing that the car is safe to drive and
that my wife will pay more attention to the road instead
of staring at that annoying bright yellow light on the
dash. Now if buying her a Christmas present was only
as easy as choosing the right code reader … Good thing
I have a few more weeks to figure that one out! ♦

letters to the editor
Thanks for the warm welcome to BMW CCA Boston! I joined because I
bought my first BMW, an X5, last fall and absolutely love the car and the
company behind it. This summer I attended the BMW Driving School
in Spartanburg, SC and had a wonderful time. I would encourage other
women to take a class as there are other women there as well.
I enjoyed meeting other BMW-philes down in SC, and I hope to meet
more of them here in Boston. I just got accepted to the Women’s Tech
course on November 15th and am looking forward to attending. Thanks
for offering these kinds of programs for women! – Jackie Bechek
I participated in the Ultimate Drive in September, and I wanted to again
say thanks, to BMW, to the chapter and to the dealers who make this
event possible. It was the first opportunity I had to participate, and I
enjoyed it greatly. Being able to drive both a 135 convertible and a Z4
convertible - albeit in rush hour traffic on 128 - was great fun and enlightening as well. I hope to do it again.
Once more, thanks to BMW and the Boston Chapter for hosting this
important event, raising awareness of everyone to the problems and
stories of those who suffer breast cancer and their support networks.
My appreciation, – Tony Lavely

Postcards from a Racing Road Trip Friday: Practice
Part 2: The U.S. Grand Prix
Story and photos by Jason Walker
T
he last Postcard from the Racing Road Trip was sent
from the beautiful and historic Watkins Glen; the
next stop is the United States Grand Prix (USGP)
in Indianapolis, Indiana. After a brief visit with my
mother at her home outside of Louisville, KY I started
on the final approach of my yearly trek to Indianapolis
for the USGP. I had been to the USGP for 4 of its last 5
runnings. I am lucky to have great friends in Indy, so
when I go to the USGP it’s usually a week-long event
that starts on Wednesday with dinner downtown.
Thursday: Pit Walkabout
Thursday morning starts early with the Pit Walkabout
where I shoot about 500 pictures of wings and brake
rotors and mechanics turning wrenches, polishing
bodywork, and cleaning wheels and tires. The faint
smells of gear oil and rubber fill the air. There’s a quiet
but continuous choir of familiar sounds such as air tools
chirping, wrenches clinking on concrete, an occasional
ratchet handle tapping against a composite race car tub,
and the low frequency thud of tires with low pressure
falling on their sides.
In addition to getting an up-close look into the garages of all the teams, there are also lots of great people
26 | Boston Bimmer •November 2008
tears the atmosphere apart like the sonic equivalent of a
bolt of lightning.
Usually at least one team treats the crowd to a practice
pit stop. There are always grid girls available for photos
in front of the elevator that hoists the Indy 500 winning
car. And one of my favorite attractions each year is a close
up look at the Safety Car and the Doctor’s Car, which are
magnificent vehicles in every way and would be revered
on any street in the world, yet they look like humble servants next to the F1 machinery.
Soon the sun starts to peek over the VIP suites and it
begins to warm the faces of all the fans staring into the
garages. For some people the hot sun is their signal to
leave, and for others it’s their opportunity to move to the
front of the line where they can get a better look at the
cars and mechanics. But by noon it’s all over and we are
shown the way to the pit lane exits. The rest of the day
is spent in the plaza watching driver interviews with the
SPEED TV crew.
to watch. Thousands turn out
for the Pit Walkabout and most
of them get their picture taken
on the yard of bricks. There are
people from dozens of different countries, some of whom
are overt about their nationality, usually in conjunction with
the support of a driver; others
are very subtle about the fact
that they are visiting the U.S.
with their nationality revealed
only by their distinct clothing or
their foreign language. The mix
of people - walking around, in the garages, and on the
track - is just one of the things about Formula 1 that
excites me. All of these people live such different lives,
in such different places, and have such different stories
relative to each other but we are all brought together by
this one amazing passion.
Eventually I get to hear the unbelievable shrieking of
an F1 engine coming to life and I realize that it has been
a whole year since I heard that sound in person and
there’s still nothing like it in the world. I often visualize a sound as energy waves traveling through the air,
but whenever I hear an F1 car I imagine the air being
ripped apart, as if the noise is so violent that it actually
Friday morning I walk through the Formula BMW paddock, the Indy Lights paddock, and of course I get my
first glimpse of the F1 cars doing their first laps around
the track. The practice sessions are my chance to try out
all the different seats that are only open when most people
are at work on Friday. I spend the morning walking the
entire track, moving from one turn to another, and by the
time the sun is directly overhead I usually end up settling
into a spot under the awnings with some lunch, directly
across from the pit lane. By the end of the last supportrace sessions, my ears are hurting from 8 hours of wearing
earplugs, my skin is coated with a film of sunscreen and
dust, and my cheeks hurt a little from smiling all day.
Saturday: Qualifying
The first race of the day on Saturday is between the Safety
Car and the FIA Doctor. The F1 doctor and the F1 safety
car driver are always trying to best each others’ times
in their stripped and race prepped AMGs. And by the
way - the safety car is fast. When you stand next to turn
8 and that monster goes roaring by it’s hard to imagine
that the fastest that car can go is the slowest that the F1
cars can go.
But the USGP isn’t just about the racing for me, it’s
also about being with my friends. The guys that I go to
the race with are true race fans. Jim is a diehard dirt track
fanatic and he would enjoy Eldora Speedway or the Belleville Midget Nationals as completely as he enjoys the
USGP. Brian follows NASCAR and the up and coming
dirt track racers, but the Indy 500 and the USGP are his
official holidays. Each year Jim, Brian, and I show up to
the track, crack an ice cold Foster’s oil can and soak up
the USGP in all its glory.

I love attending the USGP with
these guys because they’ve also attended the Brickyard 400 and the
Indy 500 and it’s interesting to listen as they contrast the 3 events. For
example the Brickyard 400, they say,
has the highest amount of environmental impact (polite way of saying
the trash is blowing in the streets).
The Indy 500 crowd is apparently
much more considerate, and it’s just
the stray garbage that ends up in the
gutters. At the USGP the fans are actually picking up trash and putting
it in its proper container. In CocaCola park, instead of monster trucks
with camper shells, you see a 5 series
parked next to a geodesic tent. Instead of empty Bud cans and hot dog
wrappers you see Guinness bottles
and organic chicken labels. I’ve even
seen a BMW powered motor home
(Vixen RV).
Sunday: Race Day
2007 was an exciting year because
we had all caught Hamilton fever.
It’s hard not to. And it was obvious
that a lot of other people had caught
the bug as well because I had never
seen so many McLaren/Vodafone/
Mercedes shirts in my life. I was also
looking forward to watching Robert Kubica race at Indy but after his
massive shunt in Canada he was sidelined for the USGP. He was however
at the track to make a statement and
I was glad to have a chance to snap
a picture of him in the bullring. So
instead of watching my favorite history making Polish driver, I got to see
Sebastian Vettel become the youngest
driver ever to race an F1 car.
As it turned out none of those
characters would disappoint. Sebastian Vettel became the youngest F1
driver to score points. Lewis Hamilton fought off and early charge by
Fernando Alonso to win his second
F1 race. My buddy Brian got to wave
his English flag, which he usually
reserves for soccer.
Monday: The Calm
After the Storm
Ordinarily I like to enjoy Indianapolis for a few hours before
leaving town and get a bite to
eat in one of the great local places. On the Monday following the
USGP it’s like the entire town
has finally exhaled and things
are calm and quiet. This time
however I had to be in Kansas
City by 5pm, which meant that
I had to be up and on the road
just as the sun was coming up.
Tune in next time for postcards
from the road trip through Kansas City, Chicago, and More! ♦

The
5SBEF*O
NEW object of my affection
5SBEF6Q
tales from the home front by Ross Schold
O
n a recent episode of the BBC automotive program
Top Gear, I saw host Jeremy Clarkson compare what
he eloquently referred to as “Estate” cars. What
a refined description “Estate.” The word just screams
English gentlemen wearing tweed jackets while motoring through the countryside. You can probably even
hear them shouting “Quite Right & Jolly Good!”
The wagons being featured were in fact quite different from the gentile visual first portrayed. A 2008 BMW
M5 Touring and the Mercedes E63 AMG Estate were up
for comparison. The testing and thorough beating of the
vehicles around a British Airport had me drooling.
Immediately the hunt for additional M5 Touring
information was on. As the English Gentlemen in the
tweed jackets would say “Release the Hounds!!!” I
quickly found out that the car was actually launched in
January of 2007 and has been available since the spring
of last year. Unfortunately, it seems that this version
of the M5 is only available in Europe. So, for the time
being, my bank account and driveway are safe from the
occupation of this “sport “wagon.
From what I saw of this practical car, it is a vehicle bordering on what I would call a “RACE wagon.”
The same V10 housed in the sedan produces just over
500hp. Overall, the performance specs are near identical to the M5 Sedan. All this muscle is wrapped into
the relatively classic disguise of a wagon body. To me
this is the ultimate sleeper. What better way to get your
hands on some ‘M’ power, while at the same time your
wife and neighbors would never suspect the level of
performance parked in your garage. The conversations
regarding this car between husbands and wives must
be excellent.
Husband – “No, Honey I really think that we should
have a wagon – you know it’s the sensible and responsible decision for our family.”
Wife – “You are so full of it – I know ‘M’ Badges
when I see them. But I do like the color. Oh, and the
extra space would be great for the dog.”
I can only imagine running my Saturday errands in
this car.
Husband –“Sure Honey, I have no problem making
a few stops for you, just tell me where you need me to
go. I think I’ve got it, the bank, dry cleaner, grocery
30 | Boston Bimmer •November 2008
store, post office, Western Mass, Upstate New York &
Canada – No Problem.”
GOOD GOD!!!!!! What a pleasure.
All this is fine to dream about; but for now it will be
just that –a dream. Only the European gentlemen get to
play with this Touring edition. Only the European Dogs
get to enjoy the extra room. In my own twisted way that
may be just the thing that has me admiring the car so
much. I can’t have one. Like many things - I guess it’s
just the thrill of the chase. Any chase however, would
be made easier in this car. Uh-oh, now I’ve started all
over. I can’t help myself. ♦
