C(ongregation): And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 1 Based on 2 Corinthians 13:14, the worship service begins with an exchange of greeting between minister and congregation, expressing unity in faith, purpose, and recognition of their mutual need for God’s blessings. 3 OH, TASTE AND SEE2 PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Lord, we pray that your mercy and grace may always go before and follow after us that, loving you with undivided hearts, we may be ready for every good and useful work; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 2 Drawing from Psalms 34:8 and 119:89, this canticle confesses with the psalmist: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103)! 4 THE WORD OF GOD3 THE FIRST LESSON: ACTS 9:1-20 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 3 The peak of the worship service is when God comes to his people in his life-giving Word. In this section, the First Lesson usually comes from the Old Testament and is often fulfilled in the Gospel Lesson. The Second Lesson usually comes from the Epistles – the New Testament letters of Christian teaching and encouragement – and stresses Christian faith and Christian living. The Gospel Lesson presents the words and works of Jesus Christ, our Savior and King. We listen intently and stand together in reverence, confident that truly “this is the Word of the Lord!” 5 THE PSALM OF THE DAY: PSALM 51A, P. 86 IN THE FRONT OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP The Congregation will sing the psalm together. Have mercy on me, O God,* according to your unfailing love. Wash away all my iniquity,* and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions,* and my sin is always before me. Refrain Against you, you only, have I sinned* and done what is evil in your sight. Surely I was sinful at birth,* sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Hide your face from my sins,* and blot out all my iniquity. Restore to me the joy of your salvation,* and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.4 Refrain 4 The “Gloria Patri” is a familiar phrase of praise that connects all of salvation history, Old and New Testament alike, by pointing us together to the Triune God and to eternal life. 6 THE SECOND LESSON: 1 TIMOTHY 1:12-17 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 12 VERSE OF THE DAY5 EPHESIANS 4:11,12 P: ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA! C: 5 11 IT WAS HE WHO GAVE SOME TO BE APOSTLES, SOME TO BE PROPHETS, SOME TO BE EVANGELISTS, AND SOME TO BE PASTORS AND TEACHERS, 12 TO PREPARE GOD’S PEOPLE FOR WORKS OF SERVICE, SO THAT THE BODY OF CHRIST MAY BE BUILT UP. ALLELUIA! In anticipation of hearing the good news about Jesus, we sing “Alleluia!” (Hebrew for “Praise the LORD!”) and John 20:31, which highlights the primary purpose of God’s Word: to point us to Christ for life and salvation. 7 THE GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 15:1-10 1 Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. 8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” After the reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings: THE CHILDREN’S SERMON Children ages 3 – 3rd grade are invited to come and sit on the steps at the front of church. THE HYMN OF THE DAY: #543, God of the Prophets THE SERMON: ACTS 9:11-156 Rev. Evan Chartrand, Luther Preparatory School “The Lord Says Go!” 6 The sermon is an extended opportunity for the preacher to apply in the lives of God’s people the two main teachings of God’s Word, Law and Gospel. The Law (God’s dos and don’ts) first shows us our sin and what we deserve for that sin, death. The Gospel (“Good News”) shows us our Savior Jesus Christ and the eternal life in heaven he grants us through faith, and then motivates us to live according to his will in thanks for all he’s done for us. Compelled by Christ’s love for us, the Law finally guides us in leading those God-pleasing lives to his glory. 8 THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Sunday) THE INSTALLATION OF OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH - For the ministry of Luther Preparatory School, one of our synod’s ministerial training schools. - For the ministry of our Sunday School, as they begin their program this weekend. - For all those dealing with health problems or working through personal difficulties. THE LORD’S PRAYER7 C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 7 When the disciples asked Jesus’ how to pray, he responded by teaching them this prayer template (Matthew 6:913, Luke 11:1-4). Primarily focusing throughout on spiritual needs rather than physical needs, we close our prayer with a “doxology” (a phrase of praise) which shows trust that God can and will do all we ask. The bells toll throughout the prayer so that anyone within earshot can pray along with us. 9 HYMN: #546, Lord Jesus, You Have Come THE CLOSING PRAYER M: Let us pray. O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE LORD’S BLESSING (Saturday) M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.
