LANKA TIMES 4 www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] 0395126561 Issue 88 October 2015 2016-17 Skilled Occupation List (SOL): Submissions now being accepted Sometimes stakeholders have the power to influence immigration policy. This is usually through the process of responding to requests for submissions by government departments. One of the most important of these in relation to Australian immigration policy is currently open until 30 October 2015. The Australian Department of Education and Training are now accepting submissions from stakeholders to assist them in considering and proposing advice to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) for the list of occupations that make up the 2016-17 SOL. They are seeking expert advice from professional organisations such as industry and employer associations. The idea is to receive information to ascertain occupational supply constraints and then determine whether these occupation shortages will be for the medium and longer term, and would therefore benefit from being included in the SOL. Why are these submissions important? They are very important to a vast number of people. From a potential migrant’s perspective the SOL determines the occupations that will allow independent skilled migration through the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa, a visa for skilled migrants that meet the minimum www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] points test and do not require Australian employment or sponsorship. These occupations are therefore considered to be most in demand, with the assumption that a migrant under this program should have no problems with obtaining employment in their field. The SOL also dictates the people who can apply for a Skilled Regional Provisional (subclass 489) visa sponsored by an eligible relative, and which trades international students who study them can apply for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa under the Graduate Work Stream. Other affected parties include: States and Territories, any occupations not on the list may need to be placed on their own occupations lists so skilled applicants can apply for a Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa; and to a lesser extent Australian employers as businesses will tend to pick up the slack by using employer sponsored visas where required. 0395126561 Issue 88 Importantly, any submissions do not affect the Consolidated Skilled Occupation Lists (CSOL), which is the list that incorporates the SOL for various visa applications including: State Sponsored, Employer Nominated and Occupational Training visas. Of course, there are always some inconsistencies, which can be seen with today’s SOL. Three examples come to mind. Law graduates would certainly be aggrieved by how hard it is to obtain employment in the legal industry yet the occupations of Solicitor and Barrister are on the SOL. Secondly, the only professional occupations that require labour market testing for a 457 visa, engineers and nurses, are also on the SOL. Although there are some reasons to explain this (different times of implementation, changes in labour market conditions when submissions have been called for), it is hoped that there would be some level of policy consistency across Australia’s different visa programs. T he 2014 Oscars celebrated the 75th anniversary of the release of "The Wizard of Oz" by having Pink sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to a backdrop of highlights from the film. What few people realized while listening to that incredible performer singing that unforgettable song is that the music is deeply embedded in the Jewish experience. where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow / Bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly / Beyond the rainbow / Why, oh why can't I?" The Jews of Europe could not fly. They could not escape beyond the rainbow. Harburg was almost prescient when he talked about wanting to fly like a bluebird away from the "chimney tops." In the post-Auschwitz era, chimney tops have taken on a whole different meaning than the one they had at the beginning of 1939 because the Nazis had not yet created the crematoriums and gas chambers that they used during the Holocaust. It is no accident that some of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "White Christmas," were written by Jews. "Rudolph" was written by Johnny Marks, and "White Christmas" was penned by Irving Berlin, a cantor's son. But perhaps the most poignant song to emerge out of the mass exodus from Europe was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The lyrics were written by Yip Harburg, the youngest of four children born to Russian-Jewish immigrants. His real name was Isidore Hochberg, and he grew up in a Yiddish-speaking, Orthodox Jewish home in New York. The song's music was written by Harold Arlen, also a cantor's son. His real name was Hyman Arluck, and his parents were from Lithuania. Together, Hochberg and Arluck wrote "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which was voted the 20th century's No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. In writing it, the two men reached deep into their immigrant Jewish consciousness — framed by the pogroms of the past and the Holocaust about to happen — and wrote an unforgettable melody set to near LANKA TIMES 6 Pink's mom is Judith Kugel. She's Jewish of Lithuanian background. As Pink was belting the Harburg/Arlen song from the stage at the Academy Awards, I wasn't thinking about the movie. I was thinking about Europe's lost Jews and the immigrants to America. prophetic words. Read the lyrics in their Jewish context and suddenly the words are no longer about wizards and Oz, Jewish survival: "Somewhere over the rainbow / Way up high / There's a land that I heard of / Once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow / Skies are blue / And the dreams that you dare to dream / Really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star / And wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops / Away above the chimney tops / That's I then was struck by the irony that for 2,000 years, the land that the Jews heard of "once in a lullaby" was not America, but Israel. The remarkable thing would be that less than 10 years after "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was published, the exile was over, and the State of Israel was reborn. Perhaps the "dreams that you dare to dream really do come true." Every single one of the artists was not just a singer, but performers who captured the attention of the audience for the full duration of the over five hour concert. The songs were a mixture of pop, rock ‘n roll, jazz and blues. The artists were a mix of young and not so young ones! Hence it was not monotonous or dragging and the audience did not feel the hours go by. Derrick Junkeer and Ishan Bahar the masterminds behind the concert joined hands with ‘Lions Sight first Hospital’ to organise this fund raiser for cataract surgeries on the deserving and marginalised communities in Sri Lanka. It was a truly magnanimous gesture of these musicians from Australia and Sri Lanka to offer their talent and service totally free, towards this great humanitarian endeavour. Speaking to the Daily Mirror Life, Co-coordinator for this project, Mohan de Silva said that he extends his heartfelt gratitude to all the musicians for this gesture. The dynamic duo Chris and Stefan who were the comperes for the event, started off the evening by giving an introduction of the event. They were successful in keeping the audience engrossed throughout the show with their interesting intros of each performer with a touch of wit added. Derrick Junkeer, stating that ‘Flame’ was one of the best bands in Sri Lanka, handed over the mic to the band that’s loved much, by the Sri Lankan music enthusiasts. They opened the night’s performance with their signature song ‘Sound of Silence’, and went on to ‘Dance with me’. Anne, the female vocalist of the band, with her powerful voice did justice to ‘Islands in the stream’. The other band members Primal, Naushad, Joe, Chris, Nishantha, Diren and Milan did a fantastic job backing all the singers and kept the audience tapping their toes throughout the long evening. Young David Senn, a product of St Peter’s College now living in Melbourne was the first soloist on stage, with ‘Here I am Baby’. He also did a good rendition of Ray Charles’ ‘Georgia’. After him was the beautiful Daniele Faour from Australia wearing a pale pink dress singing, ‘Oh Darling, please believe me’, followed by a jazz version of, ‘How will I know’. Budrin Musafer from the band ‘Spit Fires’, whom the audience just loved from the time he set foot on stage, did his own version of ‘Help me Make it through the night’ and a medley of ‘Rock ‘n’ roll’. The audience applauded and cheered on saying ‘one more’, ‘one more’. Tyronne of the all time popular country and western band ‘Cosmic Rays’, fondly known as the local Freddy Fender, was next. He sang ‘Wasted days and wasted nights’ a song originally sung by legend Freddy Fender himself, and also Tom Jones’ hit ‘Just help yourself ’. Then it was Terry McLeod with ‘This land is my Land’ and ‘Let’s twist again’ with the audience singing along. Melantha Perera of ‘Mirage’ fame who hails from Moratuwa sang ‘Words’ which is an original of the Bee Gees, and Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ whilst Russel Gomesz did Cliff Richard’s ‘The minute you’re gone’. Jason and Julian Prins better known as the JJ Twins, were also another top favourite. They did their well choreographed little dance act singing ‘Achy breaky heart’, ‘Wake up little Suzi’ and ‘Bye bye love’. Mignone Fernando, popular performer, composer and music director sang Shirley Bassey’s ‘Never never never’ and then she took over the keyboards to play ‘Just the way you are’ a song by Billy Joel sung by Maxi Rozairo with LANKA TIMES 16 Suraj on Bass, and the trio continued with a pop medley. Marcus Elvis Jackson from Melbourne did a good impression of the ‘Elvis’ act with much vigour. His hair, his shoes, thick belt, heavy rings on the fingers, the bright studded outfit and even his actions were all, out and out Elvis. His songs ‘Sexy Rider’ and ‘Burning Love’ were something you had to hear! The second segment started off with a powerful rendition of ‘Delilah’ by Ricky Bahar of Legacy. He got the audience to sing along and you could see everyone enjoying the song. Then he went on with ‘Sway’ and ‘Save the last dance’. Raj Seneviratne sang ‘He’s my brother’ and ‘Sili sili seethala’. Tilani Senn from Melbourne with ‘The greatest love’ and ‘Mercy’ was also very good. Sohan Weerasinghe whose life motto is ‘Music was my first love and it will be my last’ started with many jokes and the audience were in fits of laughter. He then went on to sing ‘Love me with all of your heart’ and a ‘Rock ‘n’ roll’ medley. Then there was Dalrene Suby, in her exotic outfit doing ‘Love me with all of your heart’ and CCR’s ‘Rolling on the River’. Thereafter it was Daniele Fuore again and another Elvis act. The highlight of the concert was when the man behind the ‘Heritage of Songs’ Derrick Junkeer entered from the rear of the auditorium serenading the audience with ‘Unchained Melody’, and handing out red roses to ladies who were thrilled to receive the roses from him. To make the show more interactive he had a competition of who could clap the loudest for his song ‘Love is in the air’. Three ladies were winners of this competition and received his music DVDs. Then it was Ishan Bahar’s turn on stage. After he did a couple of Cliff Richard songs, he called his wife - Dawn on to the stage. It was a touching moment when held her hand, and together they sang the beautiful duet ‘Somewhere between’. A very romantic moment indeed. The heartwarming grand finale of the www.lankatimes.com.au entertaining evening was, when all the performers were on stage and the audience stood up to sing the much loved gospel song ‘May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You’. Derrick Junkeer and Ishan Bahar the masterminds behind the concert joined hands with ‘Lions Sight first Hospital’ to organise this fund raiser for cataract surgeries on the deserving and marginalised communities in Sri Lanka. Quite a few places went under water. However, the bad weather improved, towards the latter part of the day, and the evening was good enough for the TNL Onstage concert to take place, at Water’s Edge. Although the open-air venue was a puddle of mud, that didn’t deter rock music lovers from turning up to see an internationally known act in action – Puddle of Mudd, a rock band, from the States. But, what they saw, and experienced, that particular evening, was muck, indeed! Their controversial singer, Wes Scantlin (the only original member) disgracefully lip-synced his way, in a totally unprofessional act. He tried to fool the people by pretending to be singing when, in fact, he was just moving his lips to pre-recorded tracks that contained vocals, etc. (In June, in Ohio, he got booed off the stage due to his alleged drunken lip-syncing, during a concert). There was absolutely nothing noteworthy, or exciting, about Puddle of Mudd’s act, on the evening of Saturday, September 26th, and everyone felt cheated. There was even talk that Wes Scantlin was high, when he came on stage, and that is not something new where this rock artiste is concerned. Wes Scantlin is associated with drugs, and violence. He was even arrested during one of Puddle of Mudd’s show, in 2004, for being too intoxicated to really function around other people. He was arrested, on July 24, 2013, for vandalizing a neighbor’s property with a buzz saw and a sledgehammer. In May of that year, he was arrested twice, within the space of a week — first on warrants, stemming from his 2012 cocaine possession case, then on charges of domestic violence, when he became physically abusive with his ex-wife Jessica, outside a West ging Swin bo with Colom vis l Ivan A Hollywood business. In July, this year, he was arrested, in Minnesota, for allegedly driving, while intoxicated -- a whopping four times the legal limit -- and leading cops on a 100 MPH chase. And within a week, the Puddle of Muddfrontman was again busted - for drunk driving, as well as marijuana possession, in South Dakota. Scantlin has spent a lot of time in the back of cop cars. One promoter, in the States, even went to the extent of putting up a sign, saying: DO NOT BOOK WES SCANTLIN BECAUSE HE MAY JUST DECIDE TO SKIP OUT ON YOUR GIG, CAUSING UNNECCESSARY DRAMA! The question, being asked, is how come such a controversial performer was booked to do his thing in Colombo! Sources, who had access to the band’s quarters, at the TNL Onstage concert, in Water’s Edge, said Puddle of Mudd gave the impression that they were only concerned about eating and drinking, and that they certainly looked high, before they went on stage. The organisers have decided to refund the entrance fee, on the production of the ticket and wristband, given at the entrance. However, having witnessed such a disgusting show, many threw away their tickets, and wristband, no sooner the show ended. allegedly Wes Scantlin LANKA TIMES 20 www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] 0395126561 Issue 88 ENTERTAINMENT MIRAGE October 2015 T back in action hey were last seen together, as Mirage, way back, in February, 2015, when they made a trip to Australia. And, on their return home, to Colombo, the scene changed for this wonderful outfit. When bassist, Benjy, and keyboardist, Melantha, quit the band, Mirage disappeared from the music scene. Benjy, however, had indicated that he was leaving the band, long before their Australian outing. He now operates with a new look Aquarius and they are currently in Doha – on a long-term contract. Melantha has ventured into teaching music and opened his music school, just recently. With two stalwarts quitting the band, together, many thought it was the end of the road for Mirage, but that is not what the group’s leader, Donald Pieries, had in mind. Yes, he did remain quiet, for a short while, but that was only because he needed time to work on his next move. And the wonderful news is that Mirage is back – in action. And I’m sure that would gladden the hearts of fans of Mirage, Down Under. Who knows – you may see them in www.lankatimes.com.au action before long! Their very first outing, in Colombo, with a line-up that includes Marlon (lead guitar / vocals), Asanka (keyboards / vocals), Sheril (bass) and, of course, Donald (drums / vocals), happened on Wednesday, October 7th, at FDOs. And, according to reports coming our way, it was a very impressive performance! I had an invitation, from Donald, for opening night, but, unfortunately, I had already confirmed a prior invitation – also for Wednesday, October 7th: Octoberfest, at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Some of those present, at FDO’s, said that Mirage rocked the house. They operate as a four-piece outfit but are likely to add one more member to the present line-up. There is also talk that they may look at enhancing the glam side with a female vocalist. Mirage will be doing the FDO’s scene, every Wednesday night, and that’s certainly good news for fans of this awesome outfit. Yes, this fashion aficionado is certainly a head-turner! His glitzy outfits make him the cynosure of all eyes, whenever he turns up at an event. The landmark was reached, just recently, when this MTD Walkers company clinched the Gold at the NCE Exporter of the Year awards ceremony. KiranAtapattu is a well known and a highly respected personality, especially in the business field, and, because of his out-of-the-ordinary approach, he has found mega success coming his way. It was a very special moment for Kiran and he decided to do it differently. Yes, we all know that most award ceremonies are mundane affairs. The winners, and invitees, arrive in full suit. And they all look quite serious, while the ceremony is in progress. This is not something unusual as most award ceremonies are classified as very formal events. Colombo Engineering has been acclaimed, and recognized, as the most efficient afloat ship repairing company, in Sri Lankan waters, and has the capability, and the technology, to match the standards of any other international port in the world. However, it’s a known fact that Kiran’s presence, at an award’s ceremony, does generate a lot of excitement as he is one guy who dares to be different! This was quite evident at the NCE Exporter of the Year ceremony, held recently. Kiran came dressed up in a flamboyant Maharajah outfit and, the very moment he made his way, towards the podium, to receive the prestigious award, the smiles became very evident, the applause grew loud, and all eyes were focused on him. Says Kiran, on doing it differently: “I’ve noticed, at these award ceremonies, everyone comes dressed up, and are pretty much quiet in their seats. Some even fall asleep! So, I thought, by being different, with my outfits, I can infuse some life into the crowd!” And Kiran has certainly made that happen because everyone seems attentive when his name is mentioned! “I select my clothes, very carefully, for every awards The Gold award ging Swin bo with Colom vis l Ivan A Heads turn…and smiles, as Kiran makes his grand appearance LANKA TIMES 22 The flamboyant Maharajah outfit www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] 0395126561 Issue 88 ENTERTAINMENT October 2015 Aquarius creating the excitement T hey say it’s now a happening scene at the Qube nightclub, Radisson Blu, in Qatar. The four guys, from Sri Lanka, were joined by two Filipinas – Jojo and Iyz – and moved into action, in July, this year. Within a short while, they were producing sounds that were very much appreciated by nightclubbers, and Qube became the place to be – for great music. The management loved the new setup and Aquarius are committed to perform till mid 2016. Bassist Benjy said that they are very happy with the setup. “The entire crowd, at the Qube, has been very nice to us and this has galvanized us into action – plus, plus.” Benjy had a special word for the hotel’s General Manager, Gordon McKenzie. “I’ve worked with Mr. McKenzie, before, as a musician, and he is one guy who knows how to appreciate what is good. “He is a great encouragement to us.” Aquarius perform six nights a week, with a break on Saturday. And they have for company a Filipino band, and a DJ, as well – also from the Philippines. Benjy says they are enthusiastically looking forward to doing the 31st night scene at the Radisson Blu. Aquarius will be featured in the GIWANA Ballroom, which can hold a crowd of 600 people. “We will be serving an international buffet dinner and this event will for the multi nationals,” said SenarathGunasekera, the Food & Beverage Manager. Serves about 6-8 1 large eggplant weighing about 1 pound The name 'rambutan' is derived from the Malay [1]-Indonesian languages [2] word for _rambut_ or "hair", a reference to the numerous hairy protuberances of the fruit, together with the noun-building suffix [3] In Vietnam [4], it is called _chôm chôm_ (meaning "messy hair") due to the spines covering the fruit's skin. It has spread from there to various parts of Asia [10], Africa [11], Oceania [12] and Central America [13].] [14] The widest variety of cultivars [15], wild and cultivated, are found in Malaysia. Around the 13th to 15th centuries, Arab traders that played a major role in Indian Ocean trade [16] introduced rambutan into Zanzibar [17] and Pemba [18] of East Africa [19]. There are limited rambutan plantings in some parts of India [20]. In the 19th century, the Dutch introduced rambutan from their colony in Southeast Asia [21] and Suriname [22] in South America. Subsequently the plant spread to tropical Americas, planted in the coastal lowlands of Colombia [23], Ecuador [24], Honduras [25], Costa Rica [26], Trinidad [27] and Cuba [28]. In 1912, rambutan was introduced to the Philippines from Indonesia. Further introductions were made in 1920 (from Indonesia) and 1930 (from Malaya), but until the 1950s its distribution was limited. There was an attempt to introduce rambutan to the United States [29], with seeds imported from Java in 1906, but the species proved to be unsuccessful, except in Puerto Rico DESCRIPTION Ripe rambutan in Malaysia It is an evergreen [32] tree growing to a height of 12-20 m. The leaves are alternate, 10-30 cm long, pinnate, with three to 11 leaflets, each leaflet 5-15 cm wide and 3-10 cm broad, with an entire margin. The flowers are small, 2.5-5 mm, apetalous, discoidal, and borne in erect terminal panicles [33] 15-30 cm wide. Rambutan trees can be male (producing only staminate flowers and, hence, produce no fruit), female (producing flowers that are only functionally female), or hermaphroditic [34] (producing flowers that are female with a small percentage of male flowers). The fruit is a round to oval single-seeded berry [35], 3-6 cm (rarely to 8 cm) long and 3-4 cm broad, borne in a loose pendant cluster of 10-20 together. The leathery skin is reddish (rarely orange or yellow), and covered with fleshy pliable spines, hence the name, which means 'hairs'. The fruit flesh, which is actually the aril [36], is translucent, whitish or very pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavor very reminiscent of grapes. The single seed is glossy brown, 1-1.3 cm, with a white basal scar. Soft and crunchy, Some folklore regards the seeds as poisonous, but tests of seed extracts reveal no toxicity to mice, even in doses up to 2500 mg/kg. The peeled fruits can be cooked and eaten, first the grape-like aril, then the nutty seed, with no waste. POLLINATION Aromatic rambutan flowers are highly attractive to many insects, especially bees. Flies (Diptera), bees (Hymenoptera [37]), and ants (_Solenopsis [38]_) are the main pollinators. Among the Diptera, _Lucilia [39]_ spp. are abundant, and among the Hymenoptera, honey bees [40] (_Apis dorsata [41]_ and _A. cerana [42]_) and the stingless bee [43] genus _Trigona [44]_ are the major visitors. _A. cerana_ colonies foraging on rambutan flowers produce large quantities of honey [45]. Bees foraging for nectar routinely contact the stigma [46] of male flowers and gather www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] significant quantities of the sticky pollen from male blossoms. Little pollen has been seen on bees foraging female flowers. Although male flowers open at 6 am, foraging by _A. cerana_ is most intense between 7 and 11 am, tapering off rather abruptly thereafter. In Thailand, _A. cerana_ is the preferred species for smallscale pollination of rambutan. Its hair is also helpful in pollination where pollen can be hooked on and transported to female flowers sri Lankans love there rambutan and I remember when I was a kid I use to love it so much I eventually loose my voice for days due to theeffects of the skin, you have to bite the skin off to get to the fruit and when you eat clusters of 10 or 20 at a time it tends to release a enzyme that makes you loose your voice or a so called sore throat, at least for me any way. INGREDIENTS (SERVES 2): * ½ of a Cantaloupe * 1 cup Blueberries * 1 cup Natural yogurt * Honey to drizzle * 1 tsp. Lime juice METHOD: First scoop melon with a melon baller (or cut into cubes) In a bowl, mix cantaloupe balls together with blueberries and lime juice. Add natural yogurt over it. Drizzle over some honey as per taste. Cantaloupe and blueberry dessert is ready to serve. Mix other fruits together with cantaloupe balls for different tastes. Enjoy! CANTALOUPE & BLUEBERRY SALAD This Cantaloupe and Blueberry fruit salad is a really simple and quick dessert I tried with some yogurt and honey over it. Specially during a hot summer day, having a healthy snack with some fruits is a perfect idea and melons come to my mind first. I have tried many recipes with different melon types and this is one of the easiest and quickest desserts I have ever tried! I used a melon baller to scoop cantaloupe, but it is not necessary. Instead use a fruit knife and cut cantaloupe into small bite size cubes of similar size. Taste of blueberries was really good with cantaloupe balls and yogurt added some rich smooth flavor to it. I used natural low fat yogurt to keep it healthier. Over the fruits, I added some fresh lime juice. Lime juice gives a good flavor to this dish. Once honey is drizzled over, it looked perfect and delicious. I couldn't wait until I finish the whole bowl. Below is the simple and quick recipe 0395126561 Issue 88 Who doesn't like a refreshing salad in a hot summer day? 31 LANKA TIMES SPORTS October 2015 BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE All Blacks and Wallabies firm as favourites Southern Hemisphere teams dominate in England The All Blacks have lived up to pre-World Cup expectations with a dominant display in England that clearly suggests they are the team to beat as Australia, South Africa and a resurgent Argentina challenge that claim to wrest that imitative away from them. In one of the most ferociously contested World Cups in history, the fancied Southern hemisphere teams survived to battle it out in the semi-finals leaving in their wake the disappointment and dejection of the top teams from the northern hemisphere amid controversy and debate about possible outcomes marred by bad officiating. The referees copped plenty of flack in crucial games involving Scotland, Wales and Ireland that may well have made a difference to the semi-final line-up. But the official status is that a Southern Hemisphere team will come away with the spoils this year and the standout on form has been the scintillating All Blacks whose expansive, explosive and creative game has the rest in awe as they desperately try to mastermind a stumbling block to stifle the deliberately rolling juggernaut. Richie McCaw’s men have peaked at the right moment to deliver the All Blacks an important World Cup victory that will see almost half of this great outfit head off into retirement and none more so than dynamic legend Dan Carter who was an LANKA TIMES 32 unfortunate casualty when they won it the last time round. The All Blacks underlined their true intent in their last encounter against known nemesis France in the Quarter final rising from a rusty start in their campaign to rout the Frenchmen by a massive 62-13 while burying their demons www.lankatimes.com.au of the past. Australia who looms as the biggest threat to all will count their blessings that they were given a lifeline by South African referee Craig Joubert whose atrocious decisions against Scotland handed them a semi-final berth. Scotland were leading with two minutes on the clock when [email protected] 0395126561 Issue 88 SPORTS October 2015 a contentious off side decision gave the Wallabies a penalty from 30 meters out which Bernard Foley calmly slotted between the posts to give them a nail biting one-point victory. It was a pulsating game of rugby which almost cost the Wallabies dearly for their sloppy play and inability to convert ideal situations into points which the Scots capitalized on. The great escape will reignite the Wallabies into the outfit that recently claimed the four nations tournament in the Southern hemisphere and earmarked them as the possible challenger to the All Blacks who have been the overall stand out team this year. South Africa and surprise package Argentina will do what they can to break the predictable All Blacks- Wallabies clash in the final but it appears cut and dry that this will be the showdown for world Rugby’s ultimate prize. As it stands, three of the semi-finalists have won the World Cup twice, The All Blacks, Australia and South Africa so it will be interesting to see who will break the deadlock and claim bragging rights as the best team in World Cups ever. An overall assessment of this World Cup at the home of Rugby Uniuon saw the emergence of several nations most notably the only Asian qualifier Japan who rocked the competition with three wins out of four games despite failing to make the quarter finals. The Japanese coached by former Wallabies mentor Eddie Jones shocked the world and the competition when they began their campaign by staging a sensational upset www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] over former World Cup champion South Africa. Their next major triumph was over Samoa and they will be a team to watch out for as the years roll on. Fiji, Georgia, Canada, USA, Italy and Uruguay also stamped their mark on the competition as did Tonga in a welcome upsurge of world rugby giving their fancied opponents a torrid time before going down. 0395126561 Issue 88 33 LANKA TIMES SPORTS October 2015 Premiership hat-trick makes these Hawks the DREAM TEAM BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Strength , courage and defiance of what appeared to be the writing on the wall best describes Hawthorn Football Club as they rose in triumph to grab a hat-trick of AFL premierships in front of a parochial nearly 100,000 fans at the MCG. The football world were readying themselves for a change in the guard as pace setters Freemantle and West Coast seemed set to wrench the premiership away to the West. But they reckoned without the fighting Hawks who laid low until it mattered, then timed their leap to perfection to knock the stuffing out of the pretenders while going on to claim three peat glory. Alistair Clarkson, Luke Hodge, magical Cyril Rioli and Sam Mitchell must be credited with masterminding the Hawks incredible run of success that stamps this group as one of the best teams in the history of VFL/AFL. For a team that battled many odds this season, including a string of injuries to key players, suspensions and most dramatically, the illness to master coach Clarkson which took him out of his job for a few weeks, the Hawthorn success story becomes more compelling. If ever there was a success story built on sheer grit and determination to prove their critics wrong, this was it. Knocking out the fancied Dockers in the West in the Preliminary final proved decisive for the Hawks as they awaited the winner of the North Melbourne- West Coast clash in the Grand Final. But making another Grand Final, their fifth in seven years for four flags, proved to be a no brainer as to the final outcome for this year’s premiership despite West Coast’s strong run into the decider. The Grand Final itself proved to be an anticlimax as the Hawks beat all the odds on a sweltering afternoon at the ‘G’, which many before the game believed would favour the Westerners, romping home to a 16.11 (106) to 8.13 (61) thrashing that stunned the Eagles into total submission. It was an object lesson in plan and execution carried out to perfection. It was also a massive turnaround from three weeks prior where the Eagles decimated the Hawks in similar fashion before their home crowd in the Preliminary final. The Hawks have re-written the record books with their current run of success and only time will tell if they are to further their now famous reputation as the best team ever to play the LANKA TIMES 34 game. Their hat-trick of wins now puts them alongside the famous achievements of Carlton who were the first to do so in 1906, 1907 and 1908. Followed by Melbourne’s incredible dominance of the 1930’s and the 50’s, doing it twice, the only team to do so, in 1939, 1940, and 1941, following it up in 1955, 1956 and 1957 before being beaten finalists in 1958 then going on to win a double again in 1959 and 1960. It was a long wait thereafter for another team to achieve this incredible success run and it came in 2001 2002 and 2003 when former Hawthorn champion Leigh Matthews took the Brisbane Lions through a fantastic journey as they established a memorable run which was broken by Port Adelaide in the 2004 Grand final. Collingwood remains the only team to win four Premierships in a row between 1927 and 1930. Hawthorn will now fix their sights on remaining focussed on their success story which will be challenged next year without any doubt as the gap between the top runners and the rest closes to a point that has made the competition totally unpredictable as it was this season. West Coast’s emergence is a case in point of a team that flew below the radar before emerging as a true force. It will be interesting to see if the Hawks can reinvent themselves for another crack at glory and only a re-energised plan for 2016 will establish if they can match Collingwood’s achievement in the 1920’s. Hawthorn’s huge Sri Lankan fan base in Melbourne were ecstatic at their team’s fantastic www.lankatimes.com.au success and there were celebrations that carried on for a week or more as they digested one of the best passages of their team’s history. He has been a consistent thorn in the flesh of batsmen worldwide with his probing deliveries and superb variation and though in the twilight of his career has shown that he will be around for a while yet. Herath’s heroics with the ball was a sequel to the fine batting of opener Dimuth Karunaratne and middle order batsman Dinesh Chandimal who hammered the West indies attack as they notched up brilliant centuries to put the tourists on the back foot. Karunaratne scored a career best 186 with 16 fours and a six to start the run riot and later in the innings Chandimal who is shaping as one of the batsmen to watch as he blossoms, scored a patient 151with 16 fours and two sixers to give the home team a commanding total of 484 which put the West Indies in a defensive frame of mind from the outset. Rangana Herath bamboozled the West Indian batsmen with his wily left arm spin to lead Sri Lanka to an emphatic innings and six run win in the first Test at Galle. Herath then wove his magic as the West Indian batsmen were exposed to quality spin being dismissed for 251 in their first stint and were forced to follow on, crumbling once again to 227 all out giving Sri Lanka an innings and 6-run win. The seasoned veteran who has been like a good wine, maturing tastefully with age, had the Windies batsmen in a web as he almost singlehandedly led his country to an important win with a rich haul of ten wickets in the match on a decidedly spin friendly surface at the picturesque Galle International stadium. The 37 year old who matured later in his career, has been Sri Lanka’s most potent strike force after www.lankatimes.com.au [email protected] Herath masterminded Sri Lanka’s victory with hauls of 6 for 68 and 4 for 79 to give the struggling islanders a much needed boost after being thrashed at home earlier by Pakistan and India.
