With a competition such as the Kewpee High School Invitational, we have the opportunity to highlight some of the best work in the area. It was a very difficult task in selecting the winning entries from a large number of excellent works. I would like to commend the students and their teachers for their strong efforts. The work represented a diverse variety of media and styles. During the judging process I was looking for the following concepts: Art that catches your eye and draws you in for a closer look. Effective use of the Elements and Principles of Art, strong composition, quality of workmanship, originality, artistic conception and attention to how the work was presented for display. I would like to thank ArtSpace for providing the forum for the students to display their art. It is always done in such a professional manner . A big thank you to Harry Shutt and the Kewpee for their continued support of the arts and this competition. Mary Lou Schepp Art Educator, Retired Bath High School The overall quality of the art work was very high. I was especially impressed with the excellent works in the drawing and painting categories. The opportunity to judge this Kewpee show was both challenging and encouraging. It was challenging to select the very best work, rewarding not only creativity and craftsmanship, but also assessing the presentation of the art work as a whole. A word of encouragement to these young artists is to give critical thought to the selection of a frame, the choice and cutting of a mat, or the creation of a base. All such selections become a part of the final work and should not be approached as an afterthought. Unfortunately, some works of art were not selected due only to shoddy presentation. I was encouraged with the wide variety of art materials being chosen and the individual approaches exhibited in using these materials in a creative and personal manner. It is evident that these students have a genuine grasp of the elements and principles of design. Many have developed an incredible level of expertise necessary in making highquality images. Recently I received a message from an artist friend that quoted Pablo Picasso as saying “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” I applaud this group of artists and encourage them in their continued endeavor into the field of art. Bruce Grimes Ceramist Yellow Springs A special Thank You to Harry Shutt of The Kewpee for his continued support of this exhibition.
