President’s Message
by John Oglesby
I
As the summer season settles into Massachusetts this year, the great
Boston Chapter events continue their streak of good weather and
excellent participation. The Chapter just finished its premier event of
the year at Mont Tremblant. We were all concerned about participation
given the economy and the stories we had heard from other clubs this
year. However, we had good participation and it was a financial success. I have to give a “tip of the hat” to Joe Marko for coordinating this
event, and believing in its success when there were a lot of members
who were not so sure it was a good idea this year.
Hopefully, our run of good weather will continue for our Concours
event at Wagner BMW in September. We are looking for a good turnout
of shined up cars for this summer’s event. See the details in the ad on
page 7 in this issue. The Chapter is also are going to Watkins Glen in
September for our annual event at America’s best road course. If you
missed Tremblant, you really need to go to the Glen!
The big BMW news this month was the withdrawal of BMW from
Formula 1. BMW hasn’t been very outspoken about the reasons for pulling out of the sport after this year, just that it was a strategic decision.
However, given BMW’s legendary conservative culture, it isn’t hard to
see the board watching all of the political antics going on in Formula 1
this year and cringing at every new revelation. It doesn’t fit their style.
Remember that they pulled out of the DTM because of similar reasons,
and recently threatened to leave the WTCC over what they saw as rules
manipulation. An interesting outcome of the withdrawal from F1 is
the rumored return to the DTM. Maybe they have gotten over the bad
feelings. One thing the withdrawal will certainly do is free up a ton of
money out of the racing budget. If only some of that stays in the budget
for 2010, we might see a larger investment in Touring Cars; or maybe
another run at LeMans? Maybe even an entry in a US series?
Speaking of Touring Cars, BMW continues to fight for championships across the globe. They’re having their best results in the legendary
BTCC. Team RAC won the last race in their 320i and is leading the
championship. They seem to finally have a 320i that works on the large
variety of tracks in the UK. In the WTCC, BMW won the last round
of the championship, but are second in the make’s championship and
third in the driver’s championship. Their driver Augusto Farfus’s win
made him the all time leader in races won in the modern BTCC. James
Clay’s Bimmerworld team has struggled since their convincing win at
Watkins Glen. They have had some DNFs and the best they have managed is a 4th and a pair of 6th place finishes. I’ll be rooting for them on
Speed TV as the season continues. Will Turner’s team has had a few
weeks off, but I should have more to report in the next issue.
Until next month – stay on track. ♦

2009 Concours d’Elegance
Ultimate Calendar:
Fall Fun!
Mark Your Calendar for
Sunday, September 13th, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
M
ark your calendar for the
Boston Chapter’s annual Concours
d’Elegance and Show
& Shine on Sunday,
September 13, 2009.
This year, we are excited to return to
Wagner BMW of Shrewsbury, MA for a fun day of
friends, cars, and awards. Our rain date is Sunday,
September 27, 2009, but let’s hope for a spectacular,
sunny day like we had in 2008.
If you think that a Concours is only for those people
who trailer their car and never drive it, think again!
Our Chapter’s Concours has classes for everyone. Even
your daily driver or your autocross car is eligible to
participate. Many have entered, and some have won!
Still, having your car judged is not for everyone;
so, we added the Show & Shine classes several years
ago. These classes have been enhanced every year, and
are pretty simple: show up, park, and walk around.
That’s it!
All participants are eligible to win awards. In prior
years, we’ve had a great selection of cars, from classics
to the latest models. Of course, your MINI is welcome,
too. Bone stock? Highly modified? Not a problem –
you’re welcome.
The Concours chairs, Mitchell Brown and Derek
DeSousa, invite you to participate in planning and
running this year’s event. Please consider helping run
the Concours. See our “Help Wanted” box on this page
for more information. Your ideas and your talents can
help make this the best Concours the Chapter has ever
had. Please stay tuned to Bimmer, the Chapter web
site (www.Boston-BMWCCA.org), and your email for
more details as the planning progresses over the next
few months. ♦
Help Wanted:
No experience necessary!
The Concours Chairs invite you to participate in planning and running this year’s
event. We’re looking for people to contribute their time, talents, and creativity. We
have a number of ways you can participate.
Do you have a good eye for detail? Become
one of our judges! Do you have ideas on
how we should update our scoring process?
Want to help spread the word (including in
online forums)? How about helping on the
day of the event?
We have lots of opportunities for you to
participate in making this an outstanding
event. Please contact the Concours Chairs
at [email protected] and let
them know you’re interested in getting involved.

Teaching Safety First
A closer look at Boston
Chapter’s Street Survival
– by Luka Serdar & Simon Cooper

S
ince 2006, the Boston Chapter has worked with the
and BMW CCA Foundation in cooperation with
TIRE RACK to provide driving skills development
programs specifically targeting teens. The program
is called the Tire Rack Street Survival ® program and
the events are held in June and September at a huge
parking lot at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in
Loudon, NH (www.nhms.com).
Safety is the Goal
are female and most students are
of high school age. After the vehicle dynamics classroom they
are separated into 4 groups that
run their assigned exercises simultaneously. This approach
minimizes waiting in lines and
maximizes the amount of practice
time on each exercise. Students
have in-car instruction and group
meetings throughout the day.
The Street Survival program consists of more than
70 events held each year across the country. The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival ® is a
“hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations.
Students use their own cars and are taught about its
specific handling limits and behavior. They learn how
to control their cars by practicing a series of low speed
exercises on wet and dry asphalt. For more information
go to: www.streetSurvival.org.
Parents are welcome
Students learn by doing
Experienced instructors
Class sizes are small with just twenty-six students admitted to each event. Historically about 40% of students

Parents usually accompany their teenager and stay all
day to observe the program. The students, instructors
and parents share a group lunch on site and then are invited to go for rides on the autocross course with their
teenager at the end of the day. A valuable “Parent Companion” handbook, containing information for parents
of young drivers is also provided which has many useful tips and suggestions.
The students are led through the exercises by a group
of very experienced instructors who all have extensive
skid pad experience in a variety of cars – fwd, rwd and
awd. A typical school has a 4:1 student instructor ratio
to ensure lots of personal instruction.
A typical schedule

Classroom – basic vehicle dynamics
Groups 1&2 – skid pad, Groups 3 &4 braking and accident avoidance
Lunch – free pizza and drinks for
students & parents
Instructor demonstrations
Groups 3 & 4 skid pad, groups 1&2 braking and accident avoidance
All groups - autocross combining all elements of exercises – wet & dry
Awarding of completion certificates and clean-up
Exercises included in the program
1. Braking in a straight line – maximum with full
ABS and threshold braking without activating ABS.
2. Braking and turning – effect of lateral weight
transfer on braking capacity
3. Lane change – obstacle avoidance, one-lane left or
right, two-lane
4. Wet skid pad – clockwise, counterclockwise
5. Two wet skid pads combined into figure 8.
Combining all the skills
The program culminates with a low speed autocross on
both wet and dry surfaces and combines elements of
the exercises practiced throughout the day. Parents are
encouraged to ride with their teenage driver to evaluate
their newly acquired defensive driving skills.
The event consists of minimal wear on tires as most
of the exercises are run on wet asphalt and speeds never
exceed 40 MPH. Safety and having fun while learning
are a top priority. Events sell out quickly so be sure to
register your teenage driver early.

Undercarriage Tech Session 7/11/09
By John Sullivan
The new shop location of Dimitri’s Landshark Automotive, a member of
Bimmers International a Service organization for Independent BMW Shops, is
now further West of where he was originally located. The new location at 135
West Central has easy access from the Mass Pike, Rt. 9 down Spleen St and left
onto West Central St. to number 135. The members that participated, during
the Tech Session, enjoyed having their car’s undercarriage thoughly inspected
with comments and tips from the Techs that were doing the inspections.
Dimitri also provided lunch that day.
The shop offers many tuner updates as Michael Gilbert a former Chapter
Officer and Club Racer could attest. Check in with Dimitri at (508)655-3957

dozen people trying out the Diesels that evening.
The managers at BMW Gallery-Norwell insured that the

the deli platter and beverages.
The Parts (Steve, Glen & Ricardo) folks also assisted in setting up the Video Display on the dealerships

Manager had Derek one of the Sales Associates helping out with his dealer
plates so the Diesels could be driven out on the streets for the Test Drives.
Tom Letaif the Service Manager helped out with storage of the Chapters
Digital Projector and overall support for the entire evening.
Larry Koch presented a Technical PowerPoint Presentation of the new
technical aspects that the new M3 incorporates. Larry also fielded some
comments about the extra pounds that the fleet is carrying nowadays

Tales from the Home Front
by Ross Schold
We’ve got a car for that!
T
here is something disturbing happening
in the auto industry as far as I’m concerned. Each car maker seems to be
designing and producing vehicles to fit
every niche within the market. Ultimately
this seems to dilute the brand so that all you
have is slightly different sizes and versions
of the same master design. Competition within
the industry is notoriously fierce – maybe more now
than ever. It seems that the manufacturers are so eager
to capture every potential buyer that they have created a monster. (Wasn’t this one of GM’s own admitted
mistakes – too many brands and too many models?)
Today a prospective buyer can walk into a showroom
like “Goldie Locks” and ask for something not too big,
not too small, all wheel drive, and quick but not fast,
sporty, but not aggressive. I think you get the point.
I fear that BMW is beginning to fall into this trap as
well. In my column last month I mentioned some of the
new models and options available within the coming
years. BMW is certainly continuing to deliver product
design and innovation, but is there really a strong demand for all the upcoming variants?
How many new models do we need?
As a big fan of the Sport Wagons I have a very specific concern about the new 5 Series GT. Do we need it?
Couldn’t most buyers make the decision between the
Sedan and the Touring models without having an option in between? Does the GT model really bring new
drivers into BMW showrooms or does it just cannibalize
the sales that would have already gone into the existing models. I use the same logic when thinking about
the new X1. I find it hard to believe that there are large
numbers of potential buyers out there clamoring for a
new model because the X3 is just too darn big.
BMW
SPECIALIST
A
This may be beginning to sound like I am against
innovation or pushing the design envelope, but
I assure you I’m not. Innovation is what will
move the brand forward. My issues are not
rooted in the quality of the vehicles, but more
from a marketing standpoint as to how the brand
is going to be positioned. The concern that I have
is that this is not innovation, but an attempt to be
all things to all people.
Is BMW expanding cautiously?
The selling strategy of the brand has always been to
have several distinct models, while providing the buyer
with many different options for engine size, transmission and trim level. BMW has always entered new
markets cautiously. The company would not enter a
segment if they could not produce a vehicle that was
true to all the characteristics and expectations of the
brand. Is the company beginning to move away from
that – only time will tell.
To be fair, I have not driven any of the new models
yet and may well be impressed once I do. I’m sure the
marketing folks have done their homework and I may
be writing a column within the next few years lamenting how wrong I was. I just don’t want to see a one of
the most desired brands in the world, automotive or
otherwise, become diluted. ♦

“Zen and the Art of ” ... not hitting a wall
T
his summer, on July 5 and 6, I participated in my very first High Performance Driving School with the Boston chapter of the BMW CCA.
While I had been attending autocross events and schools over the past
year with both the club and a few other organizations in the area, I had
yet to actually participate in an actual track event. This year, however,
I had committed to taking my driving to a new level.
Part of my new commitment included purchasing a
vehicle specifically for track use (a Miata) and doing
my best to tighten the loose nut behind the wheel, so
to speak. While I still loved to drive my 5-Series, it was
clear that subjecting such a heavy car to the ravages of
high performance driving would entail a maintenance
schedule non-conducive to daily use.
No stranger to the track
With the June event having been canceled due to
construction at New Hampshire Motor Speedway,
there was quite a crowd waiting to take to the road
course that intersects the track’s NASCAR oval. I was
certainly no stranger to the venue – I have actually
attended every single Cup race ever held at NHMS,
dating back to the early 90’s – but this was to be the
first time I would ever find myself roaring down one
of its straights at the wheel of my own car.
14 | Boston Bimmer • September 2009
I arrived early on Sunday morning to find a considerable line of vehicles already waiting at the front
gate. Soon enough, the event’s organizer’s arrived, led
by Luka Serdar. We registered and were given wristbands and t-shirts to indicate that we were not to be
shot on sight once we had driven through the tunnel
and come out the other side onto the NHMS infield.
It was quite a feeling to emerge from the darkness
of the tunnel for the first time, blinking in the bright
sunlight that bathed the newly renovated and much
drier facility.
Professional sunscreen
I drove down to the garage area where I was able to
snag a bay and unpack my car shielded from the heat.
BMW provides these garages free of charge, which is
a nice bonus and a great way to avoid over-exposure
to the elements. As a redhead, my skin erupts into
flame upon even the
slightest contact with
the sun, so I appreciated the safety offered by
the well-shielded aluminum bunkers.
After a thorough tech
inspection, all drivers
lined up for the morning
meeting, where a number
of details surrounding
the track experience
were explained. We were
divided into four different run groups, with
licensed solo drivers and
instructors at the top tier
and newbies like myself
in group four. The rules
of conduct on the track
were made very clear – pass only in specific zones (the
front and back straights, and a short straight at the top
of the hill), and only after having been given a pointby from the driver in front of you. After being made to
promise that we would not “do anything stupid that
will prohibit me from driving my car home tonight,”
we were then dispersed to meet with our instructors
and figure out our schedules.
Hitting the books
After a morning session in the classroom where we
were treated to some very well thought-out theoretical
concepts behind racing, it was time to hit the track. I
was lucky enough to have “Fast” Freddie Ferguson
as my instructor. Fred, in addition to his years of experience in Miatas, is also an accomplished racer and
an excellent communicator. At the start of our very
first session, I asked him to drive my car around the
track in order to show me the racing line and where I
should pay particular attention. After a few laps as a
passenger, it was my turn to take over and navigate
the twists and turns of NHMS.
Building confidence
With Fred beside me answering each of my questions
calmly and quickly, it was very easy to quickly build
confidence in the car and in my ability to keep it from
hitting anything solid. Each 20 minute session went
by very quickly, and not only was it great fun to be
blasting down the tarmac at speeds much higher than
local law enforcement typically approves of, but it
was also very enjoyable to be surrounded by so many
others doing the same thing in a wide variety of different machines.
Learning from experts
I would like to make a special note to explain just how
amazing I think it is that our club has such talented
instructors available who are willing to risk life and
limb by getting into an open-cockpit car with a beginner such as myself. Without knowing me from Adam,
Fred sat beside me as I drove towards very stationary
objects at a high rate of speed, trusting that at the right
moments I would use the brake and the steering wheel
in such a way as to avoid a tragic ending to both of
our days. I personally do not possess that same level
of calm and trust, and I am continually wowed that
there are so many talented individuals who do. Also
impressive was the fact that aside from a few scattered
mechanical failures, there were no sob stories to be
told in the pits at the end of either day as a result of
any accidents.
Still alive ... and ready for more
At the end of the two day session, not only was I still
alive but I had had more fun than I had previously
thought possible behind the wheel of a car. This is
going to sound strange, but being out there on the
track, completely focused on driving was far from the
rush that many people had described it to me as. On
the contrary, it felt very relaxing – almost therapeutic. The calm of narrowing your concentration to the
task at hand is probably as close as I have ever come
to achieving Zen, and I have the BMW CCA Boston
chapter to thank for opening this new spiritual door
in my life. ♦

onticello Motor Club is a new private race facility located in Monticello, New York. It is a lot
more than just a track, one can think of it as a
country club for car lovers. The idea behind MMC is to
combine a race track with the luxuries and amenities of
an exclusive club.
175 acres dedicated to drivers
Laid out over 175 acres, the focus of MMC is the 4.1
mile track which can be divided into three sections
allowing for 12 configurations. The track has over a
mile and a half of straights, 22 turns, and substantial
elevation changes. Extras include two pit facilities and
a skip pad area. Safety is addressed with generous runoff room and almost F1-like fencing and barriers. The
track was not designed for spectator racing per se, but
rather for more private gentlemen races (think Ferrari
Challenge), along with the usual schools and various
driving events, including winter events.
Membership perks are many
In addition to just the use of the track, membership perks
include track-side car storage in climate-controlled garages with general maintenance services, instructors,
and car rental programs which will feature not only
the latest and greatest in exotics but also open wheel
and vintage racers. Once completed, the Club House

Behind the Wheels
T
“Do You Know?” Volume 1
here are lots of little wheel and tire “factoids” that
people in my business take for granted, but you
may not know. I’ve included some of these facts in
other articles, but starting this month, I will occasionally write articles called, “Do you know?” Sometimes the
bits and pieces are more interesting than full articles,
and sometimes important facts are worth repeating.
Tires
Did you know that: Approximately 25% of
Americans drive cars with under inflated tires? This
is one of the statistics that ended up having the tire
pressure monitoring system law be put in effect. As
I’ve said before, your brakes don’t stop your car, your
wheels and tires do. When your wheels are bent or your
tires are under inflated, your car cannot stop as quickly
as with straight wheels and properly inflated tires. As a
result, accidents that could have been prevented aren’t.
Unavoidable accidents can also create more harm when
tires are not properly inflated.
Did you know that: Your tire pressure moni-
toring system only shows a problem when your tires
are about 25% under inflated? At 25% under inflation,
your tires cannot brake as quickly or as efficiently. You
cannot rely on your tire pressure monitoring system
to keep you safe. You need to continue checking your
own tire pressure without waiting for the system lights
to come on. There are many gauges for checking your
tire’s air pressure that are sold for the public. You can
buy them at almost any auto parts shop or on line. Do
some online research as to the type that would be easiest for you to use. Then buy at least one for yourself,
your spouse, your children and your parents. Show
them how to use it. Check for proper inflation at least
four times a year – on the anniversary of your birthday
(each quarter). You won’t forget your birthday.
Did you know that: Your tires are designed
to be good for any of four weather conditions: dry,
wet, snow and ice. Until recently, “snow and ice tires”
was the designation for tires that were designed to be
driven on snow and ice. Now the term used for all tires
that are good for snow and ice are “winter tires.” Don’t
let the term fool you. There are actually no universal
standards for any of these terms – they are given to a
tire by its manufacturer. Be sure that your winter tires
are designed to be driven in snow and ice. Unfortu18 | Boston Bimmer • September 2009
by Ina R. Ames
nately, while we’re all well trained to believe Consumer
Reports, I feel this is one area where testing is often
substandard. They test the quality of winter tires on
an ice rink in Florida. This does not replicate true winter weather conditions (unless you’re driving on an ice
rink in Florida). My customers know that my favorite
Winter tires are Nokians. Why? Because they work. The
Dunlop M3’s are also very good, but with a drawback.
After January 1st they are normally out of stock. So, if
you blow a tire after December, you’re out of luck until
the next production season.
Did you know that: Tire prices go up September 1st (as stated in my last article.) The last couple
of years, the prices have gone up anywhere between
5-10% depending on brand and manufacturer.
Aftermarket Wheels
Did you know that: Most aftermarket wheels
styles are discontinued after 1 ½ -2 years. This means
that if you buy a set of aftermarket wheels and destroy
one after the first year or so, you will then have to buy
an entire new set. If you insist on buying aftermarket
wheels, buy a fifth as an insurance policy, or have factory wheels painted a color to match or highlight the color
of your car. A lot of our customers love to have wheels
that are machined with paint in the pockets, while the
rest of the wheel is painted with gun metal grey, hyper
silver or reflectachrome, or anthracite grey. This allows
you to “redecorate” your car without spending an outrageous amount of money on wheels that are going to
be discontinued quickly.
Did you know that: There are different qual-
ities for replica wheels. Most replica wheels are not
made from a similar casting or casting method. I jokingly tell people that I think most replica wheels are
made of “heavy duty aluminum foil.” If the price is too
good to be true, it probably is. While many companies
make replica wheels, we only use one or two and rarely.
So do your homework before buying replica wheels.
Cosmetics
Did you know that: When wheels on Ebay
say they’re reconditioned, that does not guarantee the
reconditioning is to factory restoration quality – or even
the same color. Also, if their listing says the wheels are
reconditioned and they come reconditioned (no matter
what quality or reconditioning technique), neither Paypal or Ebay will provide purchase protection. Several of
my customers have been stiffed with inferior products
from an Ebay transaction, so be careful. If you do buy
wheels on Ebay, get a written guarantee that the wheels
are factory restoration quality using proper wheel paint
and that the wheels are true. If the seller won’t guarantee the quality of their product, beware.
Did you know that: You can check out the
proper descriptions and terms for different types of cosmetics wheels by checking on our web site and going to
the Cosmetics Page. We’ll be making a YouTube video
for distinguishing cosmetics soon.
What would you like to know about wheels and
tires? Please send me any little facts that you’d like to
see in future editions of “Do You Know?”. I won’t be
offering this every month, but hopefully often enough
to keep our readers informed. ♦

How “iPod your BMW”
turned into a major pain
– by Steve Aschettino
T
I was constantly
inundated with ...
“BMW introduces the
first seamless
integration of iPod
in an automobile.”
he Fall of 2004 was an exciting time in my life—I was a
Bostonian living in Manhattan, and the Red Sox were about
to win their first World Series
in 86 years. I was a Red Sox fan,
transplanted into the middle
of Yankeeville, and thoroughly
enjoyed watching the Red Sox
pull off their stunning comeback
against the Yankees. I was lucky
enough to attend one playoff
game that Fall at Yankee stadium,
but the rest were watched from my studio apartment in
Murray Hill. It was also in the Fall of 2004 that BMW and
Apple launched their huge “iPod your BMW” marketing campaign. With my eyes glued to the TV watching
baseball for a month straight, I was constantly inundated with the commercial of the twenty-something guy
walking into his silver BMW in a parking garage and
plugging in his iPod while the narrator announces that
“BMW introduces the first seamless integration of iPod
in an automobile.”
iPods relieve urban noise pollution
At the time I remember thinking this was a big deal.
Like everyone else living in NYC, I had an iPod. You
need an iPod if you are going to live in NYC: subways,
sirens, honking horns from cabs—drown them out with
your own portable music collection. Unlike most living
20 | Boston Bimmer • September 2009
in NYC though, I had a car, actually a BMW. On most days my
325i sedan would sit silently in
the parking garage on 1st Avenue.
Every other weekend however,
I got to spend some alone time
with my E46, as I would drive
back to Boston to see friends and
family. The eight-plus hours in
the car were often maddening as
I would drive in and out of the
radio reception zones. I was once
so annoyed that I printed out a
list of all the radio stations in Connecticut so I could
find something decent to listen to while stuck in the
middle of nowhere on the Merritt Parkway.
Dealership disappointment
I called my local dealer soon after seeing the commercials and inquired about the iPod feature, hoping that
it could somehow be retrofit to my car. Unfortunately,
the dealer informed me that it was not compatible with
pre-2003 cars. It was then that I turned to the Internet
for help. I discovered BMW forums where enthusiasts
met to discuss anything and everything about their beloved cars. Soon afterwards, I became well versed in all
things iPod and BMW. The BMW kit could in fact be fit
to a 3 series as old as a 1999 by swapping out the radio,
but doing so didn’t make a lot of sense. The BMW iPod
kit had many limitations. The song names would not
appear on the radio screen and you could not browse the
iPod while driving—neither on the iPod itself nor via the
radio controls. Furthermore, all songs had to be put into
playlists entitled “BMW1,” “BMW2” etc.
Would IceLink be a “cool” solution?
Fortunately, there was an aftermarket solution available,
a product called the IceLink Plus. The IceLink Plus promised to solve all of my BMW iPod needs. ID3 tags would be
displayed on the radio screen and, I could browse by Artist and Song, all from my radio controls! I was thrilled and
immediately dropped $200 for a kit. Being a city kid at the
time, and afraid of damaging anything in my new BMW,
I had the IceLink installed at a top stereo shop at a cost of
$300 for the install. Now into the “iPod Your BMW” experience for $500, I was hoping to get my money’s worth on my
next drive home. Regrettably, the IceLink turned out to be
an unreliable companion. I was unable to use the car’s Bluetooth system properly while the IceLink was playing, the
searching was painfully slow, and worse, the IceLink would
just stop working from time to time. I sent the IceLink back
and forth to California (paying shipping both ways) to have
it “updated” and exchanged a number of times. A year or
so went by and I eventually just stopped using my iPod in
the car altogether as the warranty expired on my IceLink
and I refused to pay repair costs for something that never
truly worked properly. By this time, I had moved back to
Boston, wasn’t driving as much, and had lost the love of my
iPod—at one point I even took it out of the car completely
and threw it in a desk drawer. I installed BMW’s Sirius
satellite radio solution and was happy enough with that
for long drives.

Dice-y improvement?
However, I had renewed interest in
the iPod when a new device, called the
DICE, came out later that year. Being
sold by the same company where I’d
purchased the IceLink, I was told that
the DICE was a major upgrade over
the IceLink Plus. I shelled out another $200 for the kit, and threw my
old IceLink in the garbage. The DICE,
however, did not turn out to be much
more reliable than my old IceLink had
been. There were a number of bugs
with it—compounded by the manufacturer’s refusal to acknowledge
them—despite hundreds of posts in
online forums about the device’s inwww.boston-bmwcca.org | 21
stability. When the DICE
actually worked, it was just
OK. You could browse the
iPod by album or playlist
(no artist?!) and the song
names would scroll across
the screen. Despite “support”
for use in conjunction with
BMW’s Sirius unit, the DICE
did not function properly
when both were connected,
and a loud annoying alternator whine could be heard
while driving and listening
to the iPod. Furthermore, the
DICE would consistently lose
communication with the car,
and then the iPod had to be
reset. What is the proper resetting mechanism you may
ask? Unplug the DICE from
the car, unplug the car’s battery for 5 minutes, reset the
iPod, reconnect everything.
What a pain! The shop that
installed my original IceLink
(which used the same wiring
as the DICE) had tucked the module neatly behind the
glove compartment, which made “unplugging” the
DICE a 30 minute job.
At left: The iPod now fits snuggly in
the trunk compartment with the car’s
DVD player.
and DICE, I found a local shop
that sold the Neo and had that
installed. Not wanting to take a
chance reusing the old wiring,
I paid to have the old wiring
ripped out and all new wiring installed. Sadly, and after
spending another $500 ($300
install + $200 for the Neo), I
was greeted with all too familiar results. The alternator
whine noise when slaved off
BMW’s Sirius module did not
go away, despite the new wiring. The inability to browse by
artist in the old DICE had been
corrected (a big selling point
of the Silverline /Neo), but
this version introduced new issues. About the only thing that
had consistently worked in the
old units was the song name
scrolling across my radio.
Amazingly, this stopped working with my Neo after about 15 minutes. Calls to Neo
tech support told me that this was “normal operation.
“Apparently text display was turned off when there
was “heavy ibus communication.” This time I really
had enough! I ripped the unit out of my car and tossed
it in a drawer.
“... it turns out leaving
the iPod in the trunk is just
fine ... you will never need
to touch it except ... to load
new songs.”
Another Dicey romance gone bad
Again, I fell out of love with my iPod. And again, I
learned to use Sirius as the primary form of in-car entertainment. I could no longer handle the aggravation
of unhooking my car’s battery (not something easy to
do when you live in the city) every time it failed. The
tipping point came when after 14 months my DICE
went completely dead. Having already sent it back for
exchange two times while under warranty in the first
year I owned it, I was denied an exchange this time
since the device was now more than a year old. Blah.
If you are keeping track of the math, I was out at least
$700 on the iPod project, not counting the $20 in roundtrip shipping each time I exchanged a broken unit.
If this story isn’t depressing enough already, I once
again fell victim to another poorly-designed iPod
module. The new “DICE Silverline” and its sister, the
rebadged “Neo,” hit the market from the same manufacturer. Refusing to give any more money to the
company where I had purchased the original IceLink
22 | Boston Bimmer • September 2009
Enter Intravee II
Now obsessed with finding a usable solution for
iPoding my BMW, I turned back to Internet forums. It
was then that I discovered true BMW/iPod harmony.
About a year ago, I had heard rumblings about a product out of the UK called the Intravee II (IV2) and had
anxiously awaited its release. By the time it came out, I
had already invested too much into the DICE that I did
not want to incur additional expenses of a whole new
setup. In hindsight, I would have saved a ton of money
had I just invested in the IV2 then.
The IV2 is expensive. The unit cost $270 shipped
from Bimmernav.com, plus $100 for an Alpine KCA420i iPod adapter, which is quasi hard to find, since it
has been discontinued by the manufacturer. At almost
$400, this is not a cheap solution—though compared to
$1200 spent on iPod-BMW products that did not work,
it’s a great deal!
The IV2 is a BMW ibus to Alpine AI-Net converter.
Instead of trying to do the iPod manipulation itself, the
IV2 allows Alpine’s rock-solid KCA-420i iPod controller to do the dirty work. The IV2 acts as a converter
between the Alpine controller and the BMW. I have
been using the product for about four months now and
don’t have a single complaint. There is even a customer
support forum for the IV2 and the developers are active
there in helping customers. The firmware is customer
upgradable, so you don’t need to worry about shipping
charges back and forth for simple software fixes.
While I was at first a bit bummed that the length of
the Alpine cables (about 3’) would not allow me to store
the iPod in the glove box, it turns out that leaving the
iPod in the trunk is just fine. The IV2 search is so good
(and quick!) that you will never need to touch it except
to remove it from the car to load new songs.
Pair with navigation for best results
The IV2 will work with any of the BMW i-Bus radios,
but is at its best when paired up with BMW ‘s navigation

system. Utilizing the entire screen, the IV2 effortlessly
moves throughout its menu subsystem. The fast Alpine
processor handles the interaction with the iPod and the
IV2 makes sure your navigation screen can properly interpret the data. Furthermore, the IV2 works flawlessly
with BMW’s Sirius—a simple jumper change enables
the IV2 ‘s noise cancelling features allowing it to be
slaved off the Sirius unit without the hated alternator
whine. In addition, there is also a serial port on the IV2
which is used for upgrading firmware (a major release,
v.6, is due out soon that will support other Alpine AiNet devices).
After more than four years of searching I feel that
I have finally properly achieved “iPod Your BMW”
bliss! The IV2 is truly all that it is advertised to be –
and everything the competitor’s products claim to be,
but aren’t. ♦

Boston Chapter Membership Drive
Recruit new members for the Boston Chapter
and qualify to win prizes!
To generate participation in the annual BMW CCA Membership Drive, the
Boston Chapter is holding it’s own contest. Each member you recruit will
qualify you to win one of three prizes. Winners will be announced at the
4th Quarter General Meeting in the mid- December 2009.
Prizes include:
• First Prize is an Escort Radar 8500 X50 valued at $349.95 (* upgradable to the 9500ix model for a small fee).
• Second Prize is a Gift Certificate to a Boston Chapter Driving
School (HPDE) at NHMS in the year 2010.
• Third Prize is a Gift Certificate to a Safety School (ADSS) at
NHMS in the year 2010. New Membership Definition:
A new membership is defined as a membership for an individual that
has not previously belonged to BMW CCA, or an individual that was
previously a BMW CCA member but whose membership lapsed at least
6 months prior to the date of the new membership. A new membership with a corresponding associate membership counts as one new
membership.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, current BMW CCA members must be paid members in
good standing through December 31, 2009 (they can’t be “comped” by
BMW CCA).
How the Contest operates:
New members can call 1-800-878-9292 to submit their application and
credit card information over the telephone. The referring member’s
name and their BMW CCA member number must be provided at the
time the call is made.
Or, visit the BMW CCA Website at www.bmwcca.org and submit an
application online on their secured site. To receive credit, the referring
member’s name and BMW CCA member number must be entered in
the appropriate space on the online application form.
Or, you can mail a membership application to the National Office.
In order to receive credit, the referring member’s name and BMW CCA
member number must be written on the application. Membership/applications/BMW CCA brochures are available from the National Office
by calling (864)250-0022 or sending an e-mail to [email protected].
Deadline:
All Membership applications, online registration for membership and
phone call applications must be completed, submitted and received at
the National Office 48 hours prior to the Fourth Quarter Meeting in Dec.
The exact date will be listed online and in a future Boston Bimmer.
National Membership
Drive Feb. 19 - Dec.17
To encourage growth, the BMW CCA runs
an annual membership drive that includes
special incentives in 3 categories: 1)
Current BMW CCA members, 2) Current
BMW CCA members who work for a
BMW dealer or independent BMW shop,
and 3) BMW CCA chapters. For a full
description of the rules and prizes for all
three categories, see the complete listing
and rules listed at bmwcca.org.
If you are a regular member (#1 above),
for each new member that you recruit,
you will receive $5 in “BMW CCA Bucks”
that can be used for the purchase of
BMW CCA merchandise or applied to
BMW CCA memberships. In addition,
three grand prizes will be given to the
three BMW CCA members who refer the
most members. These prizes include: 1st
Prize – One day M School at the BMW
Performance Center plus 2 nights lodging
(transportation not provided), 2nd Prize
– 2010 Oktoberfest Registration, and
3rd Prize – Valentine 1 Radar Detector.
Please see the full description and
special restrictions at bmwcca.org.
PLEASE NOTE: If referred by a current
BMW CCA member, a new member
application must contain the name
and BMW CCA member number of the
referring member in order for the referring
member to receive credit. Questions
about the program should be directed to
Frank Patek in the BMW CCA office, by
e-mail to: [email protected].

Used Pirelli Eufori@ runflat tire - 205/50
r17 I have a single Pirelli Eufori@ runflat tire in size 205/50 r17 size that came
standard on a BMW 128i sport. I damage
the other front tire and replaced all my
tires, and now have this front tire left.
I have measured the tread depth across
the tire as it is: Tread depth across the
tire (measured at the outer blocks and on
either side of center ring) 6/32 -- 8/32 -8/32 -- 6/32. This is between 50-60% of
the useable tread remaining. It is a little
dirty in the picture, but it has no damage
and I had no problems with it holding
air. The tire is less than a year old, I
bought the car originally in September

E46 M3 Premium 19” Wheels & Tires.
$2,000.00. Beautiful and near perfect. Recently purchased for my 2005 M3 which
I am trading. Tires are Continental Conti
Sport Contact. Fronts are brand spanking
new and the rears have 80% tread left.
The only flaw is a dime-sized piece of
clear coat flaked off of one of the front
rims. There is no curb damage whatsoever. In my estimation these are the most
attractive wheel for the E46 M3. You
won’t be disappointed. Would rather sell
locally and not get involved in shipping.
Will deliver within a reasonable distance
of the Merrimack Valley. The front tires
alone just cost me $725.00 so my price is
