SpellChecks, Names, and Lutz Book...
Spellchecks are wondrous things eh? Just batter on, and press
a button - bingo, and alls well.... sometimes...
The good old ODT has a big time pro Spellcheck they
can apply to incoming items, but even it, was blown away by
Cavvy’s new Finnish player, Viljami Vuorenmaa ( and no
wonder ) it ended up gibberish as the Computer tried to
‘correct the ODT spelling.’ but a RabCheck sorted it...
And there are more than a few brilliant names around
to test any system.Hows about ‘ Ifeanyichukwu Ability
Unamadu’ who plays for Mosgiel, or Truth Toheriri, or Tore
Waechter, or Warkina Tujuba - maybe a team manager’s job aint so easy after all,
as he makes out Team Sheets with that blunt pencil.
No blunt pencils for our brilliant Club Scribes though, its state of the art
electronic info that they send. Although one possible improvement would be to
make sure the ‘Subject’ line is filled in when an email message is sent. If you just
biff Reply - I can get ten messages arriving within the one reply. So please guys,
add a clear subject line... ta.
And speaking of simple names, I see my old mate Lutz Pfannenstiel was
comments man on TV for the Barca v Bayern game. Have you read his book yet ?
Its in the Dn Library. Quite a few Dunedin ‘identities’ get a mention.
‘The Unstoppable Keeper’ incredible story of German goalkeeper Lutz
Pfannenstiel – the most interesting footballer you've never heard of. A massive
bestseller in Germany, this astonishing, fascinating and at times hilarious book

The Prems had Saturday off with a
bye, and it meant a few of the fringe
players could have a run in the
Fletcher Cup.
All the new faces may have
impacted the rhythm of Peewee's lads
and they battled to put Grants Braes
away. There were a couple of Jekyll &
Hyde performances, with Damo
slotting a penalty before missing a
second spot kick, and Watty scoring
a cracker before having a Bruce Lee
brain explosion and seeing red.
Although it wasn't a fluent
team performance, 2-1 meant three
points and the Seconds are unbeaten
after a full round of football.
The Thirds had a physical encounter against
Melchester at Bayfield and came away second best,
1: Catlin Taylor-Lynch
conceding five. They had to contend with a gusty wind that
2: Kate Lorenc

of a fright by conceding three late
goals but deserved the 4-3 win.
The Chargers were
looking for a first win of the season
against Balclutha, and had the rare
chance to play on the hallowed Ellis
#1. Despite playing some great
footy Fozzy's young side were in
familiar territory two goals down
straight after half time.
It was a spirited
fightback though as the Chargers
dominated the second half and tied
the game up with great team goals
finished by Ben 'Gigli' Affleck and
the outstanding Andy Brown, but
couldn't quite find the winner with
the visiting keeper making a couple
of fingertip saves.

Looks like Neil Mac will be doing a crash course in Basque/Spanish
Real Sociedad, the Spanish club based in San Sebastian who produced Xabi Alonso
and has one of Europe’s most progressive and successful youth academies, will make
a debut at this summer’s Dale Farm Milk Cup.
Manager David Moyes, a long time supporter of the Northern Ireland
international youth football tournament, has confirmed to organisers that he will send a
side to contest the Premier competition.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers also says the importance of the Dale
Farm Milk Cup in the development of young players at Anfield cannot be underestimated.
The County Antrim man has again agreed to send a team to contest the Junior
event at the international youth football tournament in Northern Ireland this summer.
Rodgers himself played in the Milk Cup three years running as a youth.

Milk Cup Match
With a moderate cross field wind the Milk Cup
Squad played a Roslyn Wakari squad that had a
mix of up and coming youth with and well stablished
Premier League players.
The MC squad got off to an enthusiastic
start applying pressure high up the field after 20
minutes they manufactured a fast counter attack up
the right flank and scored a well taken first goal by
Anton Fitzgerald.
After cut and thrust roslyn gained
ascendancy and scored to go into the break 2 – 1
up. The 2nd half started with Roslyn applying
pressure but the defensive effort of the MC lads
was resolute.
With 15 minutes togo the MC lads once
again manufactured a quick break up the left flank
that saw Fitzgerald once slotting home to level the
scores.
After cut and thrust through the remainder
of the half Roslyn taught some valuable lessons to
the lads in being composed and patient in
defense.
Eventually Roslyn converted, with 8
minutes to go, following some excellent close
control from ex MC player Blair Bates displaying
excellent close control in the penalty Box with his

back to Goal that resulted in the ball falling
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
flavorably to advancing Roslyn support to be
driven home to give Roslyn a 3 – 2 lead.
The MC lads continued to make progress
with the quick breaks up both flanks that eventually
produced an excellent opportunity that fell to Jack
Smith who saw his shot being cleared of the line
by some desperate defense.
The match was played in excellent spirit
and was a great test for the lads who for the most
part implemented the tasks that they had been
working on in truing the previous Sunday.
Unfortunately, due to school commitments
and injuries the match v Mosgiel will have to be
postponed but we look forward to playing them in
the second round once all injuries and school
commitments are dealt with.

Messi struck on 77 minutes, rifling the

skipped past Jerome Boateng before
lifting the ball over Neuer. He also
provided the assist for Barca's third goal,
scored by Neymar in injury time.

Green Island Premier Team versus Tech.
Unfortunately only one team wanted to win
today and it wasn't us. We were not in the
game for the 1st half and we were not allowed
to play when we did get the ball.
When you play at this level it takes
people with hearts and it is about everybody
being willing to do the work. 0 – 3 down at half
time with some good finishing and a Burgess
goal sealed the deal. 0 – 4 lose. MOM Nick

The Division One team (Fletcher
Cup) After a couple of weeks of good football
the 2nds came crashing back to Earth against
a well drilled Tech team.
The Backs played well but a few
players might have to take a look at their
attitude if they want to make an impression in
Fletcher Cup.
It was good to get a few players back
from injury unavailability but there is plenty to
work on this week.
MOM goes to Nick who turned back the clock and put on a master class in Goal.

The Division Two team were at home against Grants Braes. We decided to
play some footy today and it reflected on
the score board. 5 – 1 final score. A
really good effort from everyone.
Tyler McCallion scored a great
free kick before later converting a
penalty. Jake Hanshaw scored a great
header and was awarded man of the
match. Sam Brouwer
Over 35's versus Grants Braes.
A good tight game. Came away with a 2 –
0 win with a great first goal to Ginge, 30
yard volley, giving him Player of the Day.

National Talent Centres host 450 Talented Youngsters
Bill Chisholm reports - The next generation of All Whites
Andy
and Football Ferns were put through their paces last month in
the latest National Talent Centre(NTC) camps held around the
country.
The 450 players involved in April’s NTC intake were
exposed to a new training curriculum on the pitch and in the
classroom led by 40 coaches at three venues across New
Zealand; Waitaki Boys’ High School, Kings College, and
Rathkeale College.
New Zealand Football’s Football Development
manager and former All Whites defender Andy Boyens says
April’s NTC programme provided the perfect opportunity for
players and coaches to accelerate their development.
“The NTC’s bring together New Zealand’s most
talented youth players between the ages of 12 and 16,
coupled to the country’s most talented youth coaches to create an accelerated learning experience
across the ‘four corners’ of player development,” said Boyens. “It is great to have a selection of the
best players from across the country training, playing and learning together in front of Federation
and NZ Football staff.
We don’t overlook anyone, and everyone gets the opportunity to make the most of their
potential and motivation. The pinnacle goal
is creating better All Whites and Football
Ferns but if we can improve standards
across the board for coaches and players
then so much the better,” Boyens says.
The NTC programme has
witnessed a raft of young talent graduate
from its ranks into the U17 men’s and
women’s programmes with the likes of
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Martine Puketapu and Daisy Cleverley
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
involved in last year’s U17 World Cup in
Costa Rica, while current Men’s U17
FTC at
squad members Jack-Henry Sinclair and
Tahuna,
Logan Rogerson are also among the
players to pass through
Dunedin
the programme.
Pele Prostate...
Bill Chisholm
Brazilian football legend Pele has undergone prostate surgery and is in stable
condition, a Sao Paulo hospital says. This is the second time Pele, 74, has been
hospitalized in six months.
Earlier news said Pele had a prostate condition known as hyperplasia, which
it said increases the risk of a urinary infection. Pele, whose given name is Edson
Arantes do Nascimento, was released from the same hospital in early December
following a two-week stay with kidney problems.
With more than 1280 career goals, and an unequalled three World Cup titles
during his playing career, Pele is considered by many the greatest football of all time.
Page 11
Premiers had a competitive match against Mosgiel at
Tonga Park. Given the number of chances created we
were perhaps a little unlucky to twice go a goal down in
this fixture although credit to Mosgiel they took their
chances well.
In a hectic last 10 minutes we managed to level
the scores which was pleasing and showed character
however I think the resonating feeling is that this was a
tie we should have put to bed much earlier. Final score
2-2. Obviously this scribe hasn't an ODT subscription.
The 2nds battled well in tough windy conditions
not all that conducive to football. It was all about getting
back on track and putting in a decent performance
after the disappointment of last week.
The boy's started well with another early penalty
before making it 2 shortly after straight in from a corner.
The 2nd half saw our superior fitness get the better of a
young enthusiastic Mosgiel side. 3 goals plundered in
the final 30 minutes saw this tie off 5 nil and it was a
rather pleasing performance all round.
3rds beat GI 8-1 in a game of 2 halves. The boys went into the break 7 nil up before
running out of wind a wee bit seeing GI come back into the game. Credit to them.
The Over 35's played the rampant Plainsman and put in a credible shift. Plenty to
be pleased about as the (slightly older) boy's worked hard to shut down the fast moving
Mosgiel attacks Final score 5-1.

The Gardens
Northern v Uni and we almost had a full strength team for the first time this season, with
only Cam Kerr missing with graduation. The game
started well for us with us mounting pressure on
university's back four into making mistakes with Hendo
going close with the keeper stranded and someone
getting a vital block in.
From the resulting corner we missed from
close range. But with about 20 minutes gone we went up
1-0 with Taylor Quirk rising to flick a header in from a set
piece. We had to make a couple of injury changes in the
first half with Andrew and Angus coming on, Taylor and
Emmet going off. Andrew had an instant impact after
showing pace and determination he set up Paolo at the
far post for a tap in HT 2-0 up.
Second half uni had more of the ball but we
defended well and they rarely threatened apart from one
long range shot which Freddie tipped onto the cross bar
and recovered. We had a couple more excellent
chances the best with Andrew forcing a good save one
on one with the keeper. FT 2-0 and a well deserved 3
points. Excellent performance lads!!

Southland Scene
Yesterday I've been watching the weekend's super
match OB vs Queenstown...defensively very well
organized Queenstown, always searching quick
transitions. First half did it 4 times and scored 2
goals. In the second half OB was better
when
‘Victor,’ mon

..
were close to equalize, Queenstown scored 3-1 in
another quick transition. OB scored 3-2 one min
after that but in the last minutes they played more
with the heart and couldn't equalize, but they had 2
chances to do it.
I've been in Gore Saturday morning searching for new players for
Southland Rep teams, and was good to see such a good environment around
Junior Competition. I’m pleased that I found some players to join our Rep
teams next week, because we are close to make the final decisions
to select Squads and start working...

Womens Football
The Roslyn Women Premier side played in the Knock Out Cup
this week against a very strong Uni side at the Cally.
The game was very even for the whole 90 minutes, both
teams had chances and some how no one could finish. A very
high level of fitness was key in the game due to the fast pace,
hard hitting tackles and endless attacks down the wing.
We had two major chances, Tessa Lewis had an
outstanding over the head flying bicycle kick that forced an A+
save. Player of the Day
Alex Mcintosh had a free
kick denied by the
crossbar, at this point we
all thought we were heading to extra time.
Sadly in the 84th minute Uni won a penalty and put
it in the back of the old onion bag. Uni taking the 10 victory and moving on in the cup.
The girls left the field heads high and having
known we all put 100% in. Well done to Ref Mark
Currie for an outstanding game in the middle and
letting the game flow.
Next week we play Uni in the league were the
result will be different.
Meanwhile in Queenstown, Dunedin Tech beat
the home side 3-nil, with goals by Holly Small,
Amelia Currie, and Kirsty Hayr.

Cav in the red corner - playing like Sarf
Londons favs from Selhurst Park and
Plough Lane ; late on resorting to
lumping it long and hurling balls and
bodies like windmills into the box in a
desperate attempt to force an equaliser.
The first half was very tight with
very little
given away
-0-0 at the
break . Cody took a free kick about 30yards out and whilst
everyone waited for a lofted cross he simply unleashed

fury and only the net stopped its trajectory .
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Cav responded to tie it up and once again Cody,
whose had an itchy trigger foot all season, scored a
sublime scorcher to put us ahead. With time nearly up
Cavs route 1 style of footie had our 5 ‘3 defenders under
the cosh and we buckled to cough a goal with 6 to go.
Despite some unsavory words from the crowd in
Brookys ear he didn’t waiver and our little un’s earned us a
point with a 2-2 draw. A fantastic effort to go through the
first round unbeaten.
Steves 2nds played Cav early and up against some
sublime stars of yesteryear conceding an early pen wasn’t
in the plan. Cav scored again from a corner and our boys
were up against it- we played well in spells but Cav were
ruthless late on banging in another 3.
Monos young oldies team were also entertained by
Cav and in a rugged encounter came out on top 5-1 a
couple of pens and a Tel Boylan hat trick .
Clints young thirds had a full team and played well
Page 23
against an older more physical
Northern side. 1st half was very even with only a long range speculator
seperating the sides.
Jordan in goals keeping the
black horde at bay . The 2 Sams Jeb
& TK got forward and beat the first
man regularly and ol Tim promoted
from the Gerries excelled at centre
back.
The games pivotal moment
came when a shocking decision to
award a pen when the ball struck the
back of Josh’s arm ( with his back
turned) & Northerns unsporting
acceptance of the pen. Fortunately the
ref then subbed himself on but another couple quick goals knocked the stuffing out.Wee
Jackie got on and skipped past a few players despite being about a foot smaller than his
protagonists . Final score 0/6. The 45masters were up against it when the Island
Juggernaut and their rock stars
rolled into town- so much so, that
Pikey played his sick note pass
and another thought playing for
the thirds would be easier.
Big Dave was all class
up against Dave Milts and despite
giving away a pen had him in his
overly large pocket all day. BT
scored a screamer ( I’m told) of
an equaliser and we limited green
island to scoring from set pieces.
We had our own pop star Phil
Collins in goals working his magic
. Andy was a rock but we couldn’t
quite get an equaliser
and went down 1-2
