Events in 2015 and what interesting is planned in 3 centers for children and youths
- community centers Hrušov Liščina and Zárubek in 2015
January-March 2015
Regular training of children from Hrušov and Liščina in junior hockey Vitkovice Steel
Since the beginning of November 2014 children from disadvantaged backgrounds, attend regular
training sessions in ice hockey. Hockey Academy VÍTKOVICE STEEL is involved in a project of
VÍTKOVICE STEEL and HC Vítkovice Steel. 17 children aged 6-8 years attend the trainings,
accompanied by employees of Life together. Under the guidance of professional coaches and players
of a league club kids have the opportunity to spend their leisure time actively, learn team spirit and
overcoming obstacles. Dmitrij Ščuka, Chairman of VÍTKOVICE STEEL company, said: "We are not
only promoting top sport, we want to give another chance to those who are often regarded as
outsiders."

Visit of the US American Ambassador (Andrew Shapiro) in the center Liščina
US Ambassador Andrew Schapiro and his wife Tamar Newberger visited Moravia. At the end of his
tour he paid a visit to the Ostrava district Liščina, where he also visited our community center Liščina
and talked with children and parents. Here, Roma live successfully with non-Roma citizens.
Trip to Morávka (Beskydy mountains)
Team Liščina organized in February a two-day trip for youths who participated in the realization of
summer camp for children in 2014. They took work at a summer camp very seriously - helped with the
program, had the responsibility as night guards, helped in the kitchen. These younf people try thier
best to help the others and it is welcomed. At this year's camp we also count with with them as
volunteers. We decided to thank them by organizing a trip. Youths played educational games, theater,
karaoke, had an afternoon stroll with snowball fights and bobsledding, the evening program consisted
of board games - chess etc. Children were very happy and they loved it. The boys would like to go to
Morávka once again in the future to focus on football and the girls on the dance camp.

Visit of the Canadian Ambassador (Otto Jelinek) in the center Liščina
In March the centre Liščina was visited by the Canadian Ambassador, Mr. Otto Jelinek. His visit was
very rare and precious for us. The Ambassador is a very nice person who likes to dance, and among
others cares about children and their lives. Children showed him dance performances – Roma dances.
After a performance he sat with the children in a circle, where together they discussed the problems
children encounter in their everyday life.

Romano suno competition
Children from Zárubek and Liščina participated in literary and art competition called Romano Suno
(meaning Roma dream) - a competition for primary and secondary schools and orphanages from all
over the Czech Republic, organized since 1997 by the New School NGO. The main aim of the project
is to give an opportunity to children who still knows Romani language – to use this skill in public and
describe the world around them. For many of the children such participation was first-ever meeting
with the written form of Romani language. Some had to cope with considerable difficulty. Yet they
overcame their difficulties and expressed what they or their families experienced, how it looks like at
their homes, who they like and dislike etc.
Last year, our girls from Liscina won the prize at an award ceremony in Prague and received diplomas.
This year, children from Zárubek wrote a story about Christmas (its celebration, Christmas Day), and
Romani story about whom they most appreciate. Furthermore they filmed a video (interview in
Romani). Kids participated because they know very well Romanes (comes from Slovakia, so the
family usually speaks Romanes) and took the opportunity to win something plus a possible trip to
Prague.

Roma Day celebrations in centers Hrušov, Liščina, Zárubek
In April International Roma Day is annualy celebrated worldwide. The first World Congress - Romani
Union – was held in in 1971. In the Czech Republic Roma Day is celebrated since the 1990s. In
Ostrava we also commemorated and celebrated this important day at 4 locations (center Liščina,
Hrušov Zárubek, a club in Horni Sucha). Children could join in games focusing on Roma customs,
language, culture, habits and traditions, music accompanying cultural program. People cooked some of
the traditional dishes. Roma children and young people could learn more and remember Roma
tradition (e.g. try to piece together the Roma flag, to learn more about Roma crafts, numbers and
more).

Dance show in Opava 2015
Children from Zárubek participated in a parade dance together with other groups of children, in
Opava. The show was organized by Eurotopia NGO. Then the kids could see the historic city of
Opava.

Khamoro
53 participants visited the world famous cultural event – Roma festival Khamoro. There were children
from all three centers. They took part in procession in traditional costumes, performances, concerts,
visited historical sites and monuments in Prague and met with the Minister of culture, Mr. Daniel
Herman).

Talent Show – Show your talent
The talent competition was attended by a dance groupe from Zárubek (Cikne jilore). The competition
took place at Black Meadow in Ostrava, orgnaized by White rhino NGO. The girls won the
competition and were very proud of themselves, as well as their families.
The exhibition of social services in Ostrava
Children from the center Zárubek had a dance performance on Masaryk Square in Ostrava within the
parade of social service providers in Ostrava. We also introduced our work to the public – leaflets etc.

Summer Camp Nine Crafts
Life together o.p.s. organizes children's summer camp in beautiful place in Jeseníky mountains.
Children can look forward to a full-day program, trips. Meals, accommodation, transport, insurance,
leisure and material for craft activities is all provided. Examples of crafts: basketry, woodwork,
pottery, soap manufacturing, timber, farming, firefighters, nursery, police craft, social work,
blacksmithing, confectionery etc.

Excursions to secondary schools in Ostrava for the youths – specific schools are selected according to
the interest of the target group – the excursion to Vitkovice Steel vocational school + workplace, to the
school for social work (e.g. work with ethnic minorities), to the school focused on gastronomy etc.

Year-round sports activities
Regular football practice – football teams – KC Zárubek, KC Hrušov, KC Liscina have regular
trainings and také part in sport tournaments.
Regular attendance of 3 teams from Hrušov, Liščina, Zárubek in Don Bosco Football League (spring
and autumn part). It is a competition in soccer for boys up to 15 who play football. It takes place from
September to November (autumn part) and from April to June (spring part). In 2015 KC Liscina won
the whole ligue.
Regular workouts - boxing - boys Hrušov, who train in the gym in Přívoz. Boys achieve success, they
have received several diplomas for their hard work and stamina.
Participation in the project Football for Development with the youths from Kenya, Africa.

Visit to the Home for seniors in Ostrava, performances by children and handing self-made gifts.
Exhibition of children's products - children in 2015 were involved in trips around the Czech Republic
(monuments in Ostrava, Rožnov, festival in Karvina, Khamoro in Prague, tour in Beskydy Mountains,
trips and performances in Opava etc.) - through drawings etc. Express themselves and their
impressions and experiences.
