The 2011 Maui State
Okinawan Golf Tournament
Some come to be with friends and family. Some come to support the
MOKK. Some come to win the prizes. Some come for the early
morning andagi. Whatever the motivation, the Maui State Okinawan
Golf Tournament never disappoints. For the 33rd time, golfers from all
over the state converged on the fairways of the Waiehu Golf Course
over two days to see who can get a tiny white ball into a tiny hole with
the fewest amount of shots. Congratulations to this year’s champion
Ronald Ishikawa (above with Mayor Alan Arakawa).

The end of the school year is just
around the corner and that means the
annual Children’s Camp is fast
approaching as well. In coordination
with the Hawaii United Okinawan
Association’s (HUOA) other
children’s camps across the state,
Maui co-chairs Traci Fujita-Villarosa
and Denise Villanova hope to create
an incredible cultural experience for
Maui’s youth. In past years,
participants have learned about our
culture through:
• Visual arts (ceramics, paper
mache, painting)
• Performing arts (Okinawan
dance)
• Music (traditional songs)
• Games (plantation camp toys)
• Food (e.g. champuru, nantu)
• Martial arts (iaido)
Space is limited, register as soon as
possible!

After months of unforeseen complications and
delays, our festival has returned! Our theme,
Hashi Kakiin (Building Bridges), reflects many of
the goals that come with organizing the largest
neighbor island Okinawan festival. We hope that
the sharing of our culture has lasting effects on
our Maui community.
Countless connections will be made through this
event. Whether it is a newfound interest, a
heartfelt tug of a childhood memory, a reunion of
friends, or a “discovery” of one’s ancestral culture
- no matter how significant or insignificant the
impression may seem, every positive bridge built
will strengthen the Okinawan spirit.

Seven Okinawan Students
Experience Life in Hawaii
From March 27th to April 6th, seven high school students from
Okinawa visited Maui as part of the inaugural Maui-Miyako
cultural exchange program sponsored by the World
Uchinanchu Business Association (WUB). The six female
students, Suzuko Yonoha, Ayane Tomori, Kanae Haneji, Rina
Shimoji, Mio Onga, and Yui Shomoji, were from Miyako High
School on the island of Miyako and one boy, Kazuha Higashi,
was from Okinawa Shogaku High School near Naha on the
main Okinawa island. They were accompanied by Miyako English
language teacher Maiko Namihira and two chaperones, Masae Yonaha
and Kazumi Maedomari.
The exchange, sparked by Ms. Namihira, came to fruition with the
financial and networking support of various branches of WUB,
including WUB Maui, WUB Okinawa (Naha), WUB Miyako, and
WUB Hawaii (Honolulu). The dedication and hardwork by the Maui
group: Betty Yamashiro, current President of WUB Maui, together
with Julie Higa, Kimiko Takamiya, and Carol Moto, put together a
home-stay and cultural exchange experience that all participants will
not soon forget.
The highlights were too numerous to count. The students were
hosted by Maui families, many of which had boys or girls also in
high school. They experienced life as a high school student in
Hawaii for a few days, attending classes and meeting other
students. Two days spent at the University of Hawaii at Maui
College gave them a taste of what higher education is like. Canoe
paddling, surfing, and a spectacular sunrise atop Haleakala were
also lasting memories. Maui Okinawan Rikki Hokama held an
andagi and malasada reception along with fellow Uchinanchus
John Min, Elle Cochran, and Kimo Apana. Mayor Alan Arakawa,
a past MOKK president gave them a special greeting. The Maui
County Council, Danny Mateo and Mike Victorino
acknowledged them at a County Council meeting. To top it all
off, a celebration BBQ held at the Maui Okinawan Cultural
Center gave Maui folks a chance to meet everyone involved,
share stories, and learn a little more about Miyako island as
well.
The visiting Miyako students will have the chance to show
how things are done in Okinawa when Maui will send a
small contingent of high school students to Miyako in June.
We hope that the success of this year’s exchange will carry
this program on for years to come.
