In August of this year, he will complete his work for his master's degree in English, also from the College of Arts and Sciences. At Governors State he was the recipient of the Daniel Bernd Award as the English Distinguished Undergraduate Student. Hopkins' goal is to teach literature, English, and composition in a professional and diverse environment that is dedicated to community growth and student success. His work has been published in the July/August 2001 issue of Bellowing Ark Literary Magazine and in the summer 2000 issue of The Pond Literary Magazine. Before coming to Governors State University, he graduated from Prairie State College where he was on the President's Honors List. Prior to his pursuit of higher education, Hopkins served as an avionics technician in the U.S. Air Force from 1980 to 1990. From 1991 to 2001 he was employed as a mail processing equipment mechanic by the U.S. Postal Service. One of three nominating professors in the English Department said of Hopkins, "He has a superior command of English and American literature, as well as being well-versed in language and dramatic arts." Another wrote, "What an inspiring teacher he will become!" Hopkins lives in Peotone with his wife and three sons. 14 Academic Regalia During the commencement ceremony, students and faculty wear academic costumes indicating rhe wearers' degrees and colleges or fields of study. Braided silken cords are worn by students who have achieved special scholastic recognition: gold signifies high honors; white, honors. The master's gown has sleeves with a back end extending down below the knee in a crescent shape. The doctor's gown is an elaborate costume with velvet panels down the front and around the neck, with three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. The legal authority of the university is grounded in the i ntell ectual authority of the disti nguished faculty who follow i n the procession . I n antiquity, the Mace was a weapon used to establish the "authority" of the physically strong. Its transformation into a symbol of intellectual authority is both a tribute to and a reminder of the civilizing force of a university's reachi ng, research, and community service functions. Engraved on the four side-panels of the Governors ( 1 ) the seal of the stare of I l linois; (2) a (3) rhe seal of the former l l l i nois Board of Governors U n iversities; and (4) Mace are card i nal , the stare bird; an i nscription which reads "The Governors Mace, a symbol of tradition and authority of Governors State U n iversity, dedicated to the search for excel lence in rhe pursuit of truth , knowledge, and the love of learning. Presented by Peter Levin, friend of the un iversity, June 2, 1 979 . " Atop the Mace is a silver rendition of the university logo. The three sides of the "triangle" symbolize the u n i versity ' s teach i n g , research, and community service functions. The three l i nes visual ly suggest the shape of a rocket, reminding us both that the university was founded two days after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon and that the university is a hope-filled, pioneering community, committed to a better future for all men and women. The circle symbol izes the fact that the university is, i ndeed, a community . Finally, the fact that the tips of the triangle reach beyo n d the c i rcle i n d icates the u n i vers i t y ' s outreach into t h e region, state, and nation and its co m m i t m e n t to community service. teac h i n g , research, and
