the duet newsletter volume no. 47 · pa rt ners in h e alt h Living Your Legacy by elizabeth banta, mc executive director M arc Freedman, CEO of Encore. org, recently keynoted an event sponsored by Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. He celebrated the “encore” concept, engaging people age 50+ in roles that combine personal meaning with social impact. Marc shared the idea of living a legacy. People in our country are aging in unprecedented numbers. As Marc shared, Thriving Through Adversity by ashley mcculley communications intern B y 55 years old, Peggy Hawkins imagined she’d be carefree in her golden years. Then, life happened. Her daughter, Krystal, was in a car accident and soon became addicted to her prescribed pain medication. Unfortunately, her addiction escalated. “Before the accident, Krystal was a wonderful mother. Now she’s not able to care for her children,” says Hawkins. Two years ago Child Protective Services (CPS) brought Peggy’s grandchildren, Jesus, now 14, and Alejandra, now 8, to her home. Peggy was overwhelmed with the responsibility of raising her grandchildren. Thankfully, CPS duet: partners in health & aging winter of 2013 & agin g · we are in a “sweet spot” to have so many people with experience, and with time remaining to do something about it! You can view Marc’s inspiring talk at: www. pipertrust.org/encore/awardees. I challenge myself and all readers to ponder, “How can I best live my legacy?” Duet, I hope, will be part of our answers. Duet offers an abundance of meaningful service and giving opportunities. Donations may be made throughout the year, or action may be taken now for future support by naming Duet in your planned giving. Volunteer projects may be short- or long-term, and may be tailored to your skills. Please call me at (602) 274-5022 to discuss ways you may wish to begin, or deepen, your involvement. You will see the theme of ‘living your legacy’ woven throughout this issue. I am deeply grateful to the many people who already live their legacy by sharing time and financial gifts through Duet. These caring friends define ‘social impact’ by helping thousands of people receive urgently needed health and aging services. To all of our partners in service, I thank you! referred her to Duet where she learned about our services for grandparents raising grandchildren. Peggy’s first interaction with Duet was through Patricia Dominguez, Director of Kinship Care Services who offered guidance, information and help getting beds, bedding and accessories to personalize the children’s new rooms. Krystal is only present in Jesus’ and Alejandra’s lives periodically, but the children are flourishing in the care of their grandmother. Peggy keeps the children busy and they attend every event that Duet offers. “The events and activities contribute to the children’s socialization, and have inspired Jesus’ interest in theater,” says Peggy. Today, Alejandra, who came to Peggy reading just three words per minute, is an honors student reading at a third grade level. Jesus is active in Boy Scouts, karate and theater. “Duet is wonderful to us. I recommend them to anyone I know in a similar situation,” says Peggy. Raising grandchildren can be challenging, but Peggy knows her loving care will leave a lasting legacy. Grandfamily members Peggy Hawkins, Alejandra, and Jesus thrive through Duet’s support. page 1 of 16 the duet newsletter volume no. 47 Tour de Paradise: Celebrating A Decade of Riding T hrough the vision and hard work of Brian Shea, Tour de Paradise founder, as well as Sherri Shea and the entire planning committee, the ride has generated nearly $100,000 in the past 10 years for Duet. Duet’s 10th Annual Tour de Paradise raised $20,286 thanks to riders and sponsors alike. On October 20, more than 120 bicyclists participated on three routes during a perfect weather day. Nearly 100 volunteers made this ride possible - serving on committees, helping with registration and set-up, assisting riders along the routes with water stops and more. Riders departed from Moon Valley Park and enjoyed various ride lengths winter of 2013 throughout the city. Upon completing their ride, bicyclists were treated with T-shirts, goodie bags, prizes and lunch to celebrate the day’s success. Samuel Kelsall IV was the day’s top fundraiser, bringing in $2,491 to support Duet’s free services throughout the Valley. Thank you to all who participated in the 10th Anniversary of the Tour de Paradise! Thank You, Sponsors North Scottsdale 1.800.560.1369 | www.acuranorthscottsdale.com | 7007 E. Duet Creates Partnerships and Friendships by ashley mcculley communications intern T oby Lee Spiegel, 70, first reached out to Duet seeking transportation to the grocery store after a friend who had been taking her moved away. “I have trouble because I don’t drive. I was born with multiple vision problems. You don’t want me driving around, trust me,” says Spiegel. Of her quest for a volunteer, Spiegel says she got lucky. “I got a volunteer almost immediately.” Her volunteer, Darlene Cobb, 72, has been with Duet for nearly eight years and helps multiple neighbors. Not long duet: partners in health & aging after Spiegel contacted Duet, Cobb also called Duet to find out if there was someone else she could help. What started as a beneficial partnership has since blossomed into an easy friendship. “We email back and forth and talk on the phone. We’ve become close friends. It’s a unique experience for me and I enjoy the Mondays … because I love to be with Darlene. She’s a sweetheart,” says Spiegel. Cobb notes it isn’t just the neighbors who benefit from the partnerships orchestrated by Duet. “Sure, it’s helping someone else, but then we, as volunteers, learn so much, too. To me this reflects the golden rule: If we all treat one another like we wanted to be treated, just think about how great the world would be,” says Cobb. Through generous supporters who give of their time and resources, Duet is able to connect neighbors with volunteers who are able to help fill out paperwork, pay friendly visits and phone calls, provide rides to medical appointments, offer respite, train in computer use, help with grocery shopping and even small home repairs -- always, free-of-charge. Their commitment to Duet was evident through their generous planning. Anita Silverthorn discovered Duet 18 years ago during her husband’s long illness. “Your caregiver support group gave me winter of 2013 someone to talk to.” After her husband’s passing, she began volunteering through Duet. When she herself needed help, Duet paired Anita with caring volunteers who provided computer training plus rides to grocery stores and medical appointments (thank you Nancy, David and Della!). Anita previously shared, “I chose to include Duet in my estate plan because they have been so good to me and to everybody who needs help. I like knowing my support will continue helping others.” We are truly grateful to these caring, proactive people. Each gift, from modest to large, was given with a big heart and each was received with reverence. Please consider Duet as you create your own personal legacy. Your foresight will provide help to people in perpetuity, while demonstrating your values to your family and loved ones. uet was blessed to receive several estate gifts in 2012. Social worker Barbara Busse witnessed first-hand how Duet’s services improved the lives of seniors she referred for help, and was inspired to include Duet in her estate planning. Ilau Clark received Duet’s help from 2000–2010 from dedicated volunteers who provided visiting, grocery shopping and home repairs (thank you Emily, David, John, Lawrence and Ken!) and in gratitude, named Duet in her will. Dorothea and Thomas Clarke strengthened our cause through gifts of time and treasure for many years. The afternoon was filled with delicious teas, scones, tea sandwiches, desserts and the company of friends. This popular holiday season event netted more than $113,000 for Duet’s free-of-charge services offered to older adults and their families as they face challenges related to aging. “We are absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and so pleased to break the six-figure mark for a third time,” said Elizabeth Banta, Executive Director for Duet. “On behalf of all the older adults and families who will receive services because of these donations, we are sincerely thankful.” Long time Duet supporters Dr. Pauline Komnenich and Norman McClelland provided a $25,000 “challenge gift” and Pauline Finney, Poinsettia Tea committee member, announced she would provide an additional $20,000 match for firsttime donors’ gifts. Inspired by these “challenge gifts” that would match up to $45,000, attendees contributed more than $45,000 during a live “request for donations.” Additional dollars were raised through sponsorships, underwriting, ticket sales and a drawing. “I served on the Board for over 15 years and am truly committed to Duet because it stands for care, commitment and building special community relationships,” said Komnenich. “It was through the sixteen year experience of caregiving for my father that I became interested and dedicated to family caregiving of older adults in the home.” Also during the Tea, Duet presented its prestigious Jeff Dennis Community Vision Award to American Express. The award was accepted by Christa Burkhalter, Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications. This award is presented annually to an organization winter of 2013 that brings Duet’s mission to life through stellar leadership. Destry Jetton, Channel 12’s Arizona Midday host, served as mistress of ceremonies. Guests were treated to an outstanding performance by the Audacity Quartet. Proceeds from the Tea will be “poured” into Duet’s one-on-one services that are provided free-of-charge to people in need. Many people behave as though they will be forever young and healthy. At some point reality intrudes and a spouse, parent or grandparent suddenly falls seriously ill and can’t make or communicate life-anddeath medical decisions for themselves. Instead of the calm quiet of a living room, family members must hurriedly gather in the hospital waiting room and decide what the seriously ill or dying person would or wouldn’t have wanted. They have reached the point when the discussion can no longer be delayed because a healthcare provider needs an immediate decision. Duet is pleased to announce that it will host a Five Wishes advance directives workshop to all Duet supporters, volunteers and neighbors free-of-charge. Five Wishes is an easy-to-use tool that helps you, and those close to you, plan the kind of care you want to receive should you become seriously ill. Five Wishes lets your family and doctors know: • Who you want to make health care decisions for you when you can’t make them. • The kind of medical treatment you want or don’t want. • How comfortable you want to be. • How you want people to treat you. • What you want your loved ones to know. Five Wishes is written in everyday language and helps start and structure important conversations about care in times of serious illness. Duet will offer two sessions of the Five Wishes workshop. Duet is a resource for faith communities and nurses who want to create health programs to help the “whole person” in mind, body and spirit. Helen Harrison, 81, was actively involved in bringing faith community nursing to her church, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. However, she never expected to be asked to serve as their nurse for six years. “[Duet was] a big help when we were trying to set up a program,” says Harrison. “We had no idea what we had to do and how to do it. I don’t know that we could have done it without them.” Helen recently retired after many years of faithful service.
