TEMPORARY exhibitions
THE SONS OF THE GREAT RAVEN
FROM 11TH DECEMBER 2015 TO 13TH JUNE 2016 - MUSÉE DU NOUVEAU MONDE
Little known by the general public, the peoples of the North-West coast of America present very
rich, consistent and very specific cultures. Generally practising a pronounced hierarchisation of
their societies, unlike other large cultural areas, they have also developed very accomplished and
highly valued artistic forms that are expressed, among other ways, on the heraldic totems that are
probably their best-known creations. A people focused on the sea, they help us discover completely
new aspects of the Native American Indians.
COLOURS AND INK
FROM 8TH FEBRUARY TO 6TH JUNE 2016 - MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS
This exhibition is the opportunity to discover the particularly evocative and seductive style of works
by Youqua, a 19th century Chinese painter, and also more traditional Chinese and Japanese works
on paper, in colour and in monochrome ink. These collections, from both the legacies of La Rochelle
collectors and deposits from the Musée de la Marine and the Musée Guimet, are of great quality and
have never been shown before.
HANGING N°9: WHAT IF WE TALKED ABOUT THE LIGHT?
UNTIL 24TH AUGUST 2016 - MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS
Hanging number 9 at the Museum of Fine Art was entrusted to the inmates of the St-Martin de
Ré prison. Around a dozen people, supervised by the artist Marie Tillart, worked on the information
database of the museum’s collections and also worked physically on the works that they selected
with the theme of light. Landscapes and seascapes particularly take the limelight and enable these
imprisoned people to express themselves differently.
EROTIK KANAK EXHIBITION
UNTIL 18TH SEPTEMBER 2016 - MUSÉUM D’HISTOIRE NATURELLE
From drawings reproducing the scenes etched onto bamboo kept in several museums in the world,
and kanak objects from the Museum’s collection, anthropologist Roger Boulay proposes an original
reading of kanak culture. The physical evocations of sexuality thus make reference to the origins of
life, to belonging to a clan, to ancestors as well as relations with the Europeans. Works by the kanak
artist Stéphanie Wamytan complete this presentation with a more contemporary vision.
BLACK STARS
FROM 9TH MAY TO 18TH SEPTEMBER 2016 - CLOÎTRE DES DAMES BLANCHES
Twenty portraits of people of colour are presented to shed light on black history which, contrary to
popular belief, did not start with trafficking and cannot be reduced to slavery. Did you know that some
Egyptian Pharaohs were black? That Matthew Henson, a black man, was the first Westerner to reach
the North Pole? That La Fontaine’s Fables were inspired directly by the works of Aesop, a Nubian from
the 6th century BC? It is during this exhibition, the fruit of the labours of our volunteers, that you will
be able to learn even more about these events and historic people that built our history for us all. To
see in the same venue, the exhibition “Frères d’Ame, héritages croisés de la grande guerre” (Soul
Brothers, linked heritage from the Great War), 14 panels explaining the journeys of various figures
and communities that marked the history of World War One.
DELMAS-VIELJEUX: THE GREAT SAGA OF A SHIPPING
COMPANY AND A FAMILY FROM LA ROCHELLE
FROM NOVEMBER 2016 - MUSÉE MARITIME
The Delmas company, created in La Rochelle at the end of the 19th century, left its mark on the town
and formed the pattern of the port activity for decades. The Delmas brothers and Léonce Vieljeux,
the characters who were part of its foundation and international development, are figures that the
people of La Rochelle are particularly fond of. The Town and the La Rochelle Maritime Museum
decided to pay homage to the company with an exhibition that will open in November 2016.

Discovering
La Rochelle
A unique and gentle way of life, that’s what those who have enjoyed the
delights of La Rochelle repeat, over and over again. Here, it is the ocean itself
that is keen to welcome you. It surrounds you with its ocean spray, energises
you with its invigorating air and encourages you to dream. It must be said, it’s
right at home here. With its four harbours, La Rochelle is the Atlantic city par
excellence.
But La Rochelle is also that light on white stone that is both soft and radiant.
It reveals décor that constantly surprises the walker, from superb houses in
the centre to the arcades that play hide and seek with the rays of sunshine. La
Rochelle, a town of history but especially a town of action, can be discovered
at any time and in all seasons.
6
Once free from feudal protection, and having been granted wide-ranging liberties and privileges,
La Rochelle was able to develop its maritime trade, based on the prosperous wine and salt market.
Being an independent town, it adopted the new Reformation ideas and became a Protestant
stronghold. This meant it was a real threat to the policy of unification desired by the king of France,
resulting in a bitter siege, “Le Grand Siège” from 1627 to 1628.
The sea provided an economic revival for the town with
regular links with New France (Canada) and the West
Indies. This was the beginning of the spread of intellectual
and artistic influences, alongside the flourishing trade for
shipowners, some of these becoming rich, unfortunately,
through the slave trade, known as “triangular trade”.
From the 50’s to the present time, the town has dramatically increased in population. New neighbourhoods have been
built in the outskirts with coordinated developments to
keep up with the image of beautiful, innovative La Rochelle.
Since the beginning of the 1970s, La Rochelle has stood
out thanks to its very special «town quality»: encouraging
renewable energy, attaching value to natural areas,
saving the countryside, protecting biodiversity, allowing
for sustainable transport, etc. When it comes to urban
ecology, the name of La Rochelle is almost always
associated with it.
The Revolution and the Napoleonic wars cut La Rochelle off
from its traditional commercial outlets, a low period in its
history. However, a new era started with the creation of
the commercial port, La Pallice, now the 6th “grand port
maritime” in France.

HERITAGE to see
From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance period, from the 17th century to the 20th, and up to the
contemporary period, La Rochelle offers the visitor all the treasures of its architectural heritage.
Wander freely, because it is often through doorways or in alleyways that La Rochelle hides its
greatest treasures.

ARCADE STREETS
One of the charms of La Rochelle, without any doubt, is its arcaded streets, typical of a town that has grown commercially.
Displaying goods while being protected from weather conditions, was important for shopkeepers. Naturally, they had to
pay taxes for using this space for business purposes. Rue des Merciers, rue Chaudrier, rue du Palais, rue du Minage…
5
SAINT-SAUVEUR CHURCH
The first church was burnt in 1418, the second built in the style of Flamboyant Gothic, but only the bell tower and part
of the portal remain. Between 1650-1669 St-Sauveur was rebuilt, but burnt down again in 1705, except for the façade.
The building now, with its ribbed vaulting, is simple and charming. The church was opened to the public in 2008 after 13
years of restoration.
Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 6 pm. Sunday from 4 pm to 7:30
1
THE STOCK EXCHANGE
It was home to the Chamber of Commerce from 1760 to 2002. You can admire this typical 18th century building with its
two wings linked by a peristyle. In the inner yard, the compass set in stone and the sea emblems (trophies, anchors, oars,
sextants) remind us of the flourishing trade of La Rochelle in the 18th century. This beautiful building, with its perfect
proportions, harmony and simplicity of design, makes it one of the most interesting monuments of La Rochelle.

8
HOUSE OF HENRI II
This was built in the 16th century by Hugues Pontard (whose son became mayor of La Rochelle in 1567) in a style mixing
columns and pediments copied from antiquity, with coffered ceilings. It is not an ‘ordinary’ house of the 16th century,
since “Maison Henri II”, is not in fact a house! Its superposed galleries are nothing more than narrow corridors extending
from the staircase turret on the right to the office fitted on the first floor in the pavilion on the left. This shallow façade
is simply a monumental decor, a dream architecture where roofs and dormer windows simulate an extraordinary dwelling
overlooking a garden: an exceptional and unique piece of work of the French Renaissance period, straight from the imagination of an unknown master stonemason circa 1555. Source : Richard Lêvesque.
7 THE TOWN HALL
On 28th June 2013 at 1:55 pm, a fire broke out in the most emblematic building of La Rochelle’s historic centre: the Town
Hall! Thanks to the prompt action of the firemen and operating personnel of the La Rochelle City Hall Services, all the
treasures were saved from the flames and the water – including artefacts related to the Siege of La Rochelle, the Aldermen’s
Room, the large Assembly Room and Jean Guiton’s Office with its legendary marble table.
While the loss of heritage and the sense of emotion are huge for the city of La Rochelle and all those who love this
building so imbued with history, the time for reconstruction has now begun. After the initial work to secure and protect
the building, major restoration work is now being undertaken and is expected to last for 5 years.
THE OLD PORT
La Rochelle’s port has been on this site since the 13th century. It is probable that it was fortified from the beginning, but
the remaining towers date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. After the 1628 Siege, the battlements were pulled down
but the towers survived. On each side of the entrance to the port you have St Nicholas tower, the taller and the Chain
tower. In the distance, linked to the latter by a parapet walkway, you can see the Lantern tower, formerly a lighthouse,
but also used as a prison.
THE 19TH CENTURY MARKET
The covered market was built from 1834 to 1836 where the first meat market used to be. In 1893 two side
aisles were built to flank the main alley. Opposite the market place notice a half-timbered house and the cul-desac “Tout-y-faut” at the bottom of which is a Renaissance mullioned window.
THE RAILWAY STATION
Built between 1910 and 1922 it is the last monumental station of that kind built by the French Rail. At that time this
project was quite amazing considering that La Rochelle had no more than 30000 inhabitants. The exterior decoration
shows shells, fish and crabs.
9
13
THE LAW COURTS
The law courts were built during the reign of Henry IV in 1604 but were replaced during the 18th century. Finished
just before the French Revolution, the carved fleurs de lys were scratched out and replaced by the still visible
inscription “Temple of Justice under the reign of Liberty, Equality, year II of the French Republic”. The façade is
of a Corinthian style, with strong columns delicately decorated reaching up to the architrave. Inside we can see a
corridor made of bricks and stone and pediment doors dating from the earlier period of 1604. The narrow street
doesn’t permit a proper view of the building, but it fits in harmoniously with the surrounding setting thanks to
its porches.
6
THE TOWN CLOCK
The Town Clock is on the gateway tower situated in what remains of the medieval town wall separating the old town and
the harbour. The 14th century massive base had two gates, one for carriages and one for pedestrians, but was altered to
one archway in 1672. In 1746 the pepper-box roofs were replaced by a dome with pilasters, small columns and cherubs
supporting globes and flags.
FROM MEDIEVAL HOUSES TO TOWN MANSIONS
The architectural richness of the town can be seen in the concentration in the streets of the city centre of houses of the
15th and 18th century. The range is evident: half-timbered medieval houses, with timbers covered by slate, rich façades
with stone sculptured figures of the 16th and 17th centuries and the sobriety and nobility of the mansions built by the
shipowners during the 18th century.
3
SAINT-BARTHÉLEMY BELFRY
At the corner of rue Pernelle and rue Aufrédy, this bell tower built in a Gothic style was part of the Saint-Barthélemy
church destroyed in 1568. It was in this church that the mayor was elected each year on the Sunday after Easter.
2
THE CATHEDRAL
After the end of the 1628 Great Siege and their victory, the Catholics decided to make the ex-Protestant stronghold the
head of a diocese. Therefore they needed a cathedral. The plans were drawn up by Jacques Gabriel, but he died before the
laying of the foundation stone in 1742. His son and successor, Jacques-Ange Gabriel, carried out the construction from a
distance assisted in 1773 by a commission of which Soufflot was part.
Lack of money caused several interruptions. Finally, in 1784, the cathedral was consecrated by the Bishop of Crussol
d’Uzés. Inside, you can admire the 19th century paintings of the dome by William Bouguereau as well as the votive
offerings of the sailors’ chapel, painted during the 17th and 18th centuries.

and places to visit

museums of La Rochelle will take you on extraordinary journeys to the heart
of Science, the Arts, History and Nature... Now boarding!

MUSÉE MARITIME
MUSEUM D’HISTOIRE NATURELLE
Go and discover La Rochelle and its ports under the great
gallery of flags: the exhibition that opened in 2015 presents
La Rochelle “daughter of the sea”, shaped and modelled by
the sailing adventures and conquests of the men that built
her. Models, photos, etchings, testimonies and objects will
take you on a journey from the origins of La Rochelle in the
year 1000, to discover the way of life of the tradesmen in
contemporary ports. The France 1, the meteorological frigate
that is a listed historical monument and a real symbol of
the Museum can be visited from the engine room, to the
commander’s walkway, inviting you to find out about life
on board for sailors and weather engineers. Alongside, board
the deck of a real trawler or a port tugboat.
The Maritime Museum is also heritage that sails and lives
on with the arrival of privately owned exceptional classic
yachts on its quays.
A scientific institution and a “Musée de France”, the
Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle (Museum of Natural History)
has been established in the centre of the town for almost
two centuries. It is a place for conservation, presentation
and the exchange of knowledge. For museum professionals,
scientists and those who are simply curious, the museum
has numerous tools to quench your thirst for knowledge.
The 2,500m2 of exhibition space offer a fabulous journey to
the heart of our natural and cultural heritage. Here you can
see almost 10,000 specimens and objects from naturalist
collections from Africa, the Americas and Oceania, collected
since the 18th century, with a modern and interactive
museography. The contemporary setting integrates perfectly
with the old restored spaces and highlights the charm and
beauty of three-hundred year old architecture.

MUSEE DU NOUVEAU MONDE
MUSEE DES BEAUX-ARTS
La Rochelle was one of the main ports for trade and emigration
towards the New World: New France, Antilles... The witness
of the relations between France and the Americas, the Musée
du Nouveau Monde (Museum of the New World) presents
its themed collection in the prestigious setting of an old
18th century mansion, Hôtel Fleuriau, home of a rich family
from La Rochelle and the owner of a plantation in SaintDomingue (Haïti). Through paintings, etchings, drawings,
sculptures, old maps and decorative objets d’art linked to
the theme of the New World, the Museum transports you
from the Antilles to New-France, and in conquering the
West, brings you face to face with the American Indian
world through objects and photographs by E. Curtis.
Since 1844, the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Art)
has occupied the second floor of the Hôtel de Crussol d’Uzès,
a magnificent neo-classical episcopal palace built between
1773 and 1777, and for the past 3 years has expanded into
all three floors of the building.
It holds a rich panorama of European painting from the 15th
century to the early 20th century with high quality classic
works (Eustache Lesueur, Paul Liégeois, Jacob de Gheyn
II, Luca Giordano, Willem van de Velde the younger), but
particularly a very complete illustration of the 19th century
Salon painting (Camille Corot, Paul Huet, Gustave Doré...)
with a clear preference for artists originating from the area
such as Eugène Fromentin or William Bouguereau.
The first floor is devoted to two significant episodes within
the history of the town: the siege of 1628 and the Allied
siege (1939-1945), while temporary exhibitions that are
regularly refreshed are held on the ground floor.

The parks of La Rochelle with their changing atmospheres

The Village des Boucholeurs

The beach resort in the Pays Rochelais
Depending on your tastes, your mood at the time and the
tides, you could laze around on the beach or try one of the
many fun sports activities that take place there. For sportier
types, the resort lends itself perfectly to water sports: from
learning to sail to kite-surfing.
Châtelaillon-Plage has kept the soul of its shellfish-farming
and oyster-farming tradition, to be discovered at the Village
des Boucholeurs celebrated at the resort in August each
year. It is in this authentic place that oyster-farming and
mussel-farming establishments are still active.
TO DO: every year the kite and wind festival over Easter
weekend, Châtel en Fête at the end of June and its amazing
firework display and also… free concerts in the summer in the park, weekly shows for children, the traditional
Boucholeurs oyster festival in August, golf on the beach...
and so many celebratory events to enjoy as a family.

POITIERS... ROMAN CAPITAL AND LARGEST
PROTECTED AREA IN FRANCE
Poitiers is one of the symbolic towns of Roman art in France. Two
famous battles have ensured its appearance in the history books:
the ones against the Visigoths (507) and the Arabs (732), with
which two famous names are connected, Clovis and Charles Martel.
It was the town-planning developments in the 18th and 19th centuries
that give Poitiers its modern-day configuration. To take it all in, in
one glance, and understand the medieval roots of the centre of
Poitiers, you need to visit the terrasse des Dunes.
Poitiers has 80 listed buildings classed as Historic Monuments, the
most famous of which are the Baptistery of Saint-Jean (oldest trace
in Europe of the beginnings of the Christian world), the church of
Notre-Dame-la-Grande or the church of Saint-Hilaire (a stop for
pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela).
Today, the town maintains a harmonious balance between
the past and modernity. Remains of the Roman amphitheatre,
masterpieces of Roman and Gothic architecture, private mansions,
little streets and medieval squares happily jostle alongside the
art-deco lines of the buildings in the town centre by architects
Martineau, Perret and Ursault…
Nearby... Escape to a theme park that is unique in
Europe: Futuroscope!

BORDEAUX, AN OCEAN CITY
ON THE UNESCO
WORLD HERITAGE LIST
A pearl of the 18th century, with investment by
contemporary architects, cultivated to grow wine from
the earth. On the world heritage list, this ocean city,
a window open to the world since time immemorial,
has been able to capture its charms while preserving its
two-thousand year old civilisation.
A city of trade, bourgeoisie and harbours, refined
and cultivated, Bordeaux is evasive in its character.
“Take a bit of Versaille and mix in Anvers” said Victor
Hugo in 1843. “We haven’t boasted enough about
Bordeaux (...) a curious, original, perhaps unique city”,
he added.
This city, an open window to the world since time
immemorial, is much appreciated by its residents. The
wide river offers them the stars. The forest and the
countryside are nearby, the ocean isn’t far away, the
mountains just a little further. Here a Roman amphitheatre,
there some Gothic Renaissance, the classicism of the
17th century in abundance, the 20th century from Art
Deco to international style, and today a stimulating
city that seeks, mutates and creates. The art of a town.
And a way of life. Gastronomy and wine, terraces and
markets, arts and shops, celebrations... the multitude of
flavours will delight your senses.
