Community Update
Fall is just around the corner and you will see that the fall season offers many great
programs at the community centre.
You will notice as you register for fall programs that there is a new registration program
in place. We are hopeful that you will find on line registration easier to navigate. As always
should you wish to register for programs in person the great staff at the front desk are
available to assist you.
As I write this message, The Killarney Community Centre Society together with
Kerrisdale, Sunset, Hasting and Kensington Community Centres are getting ready to head
back to court. The new registration system will see all monies that used to flow to the
associations now go directly to the City of Vancouver. We are being asked to trust the
City will remit all program revenue owed to us even though the pilot that is currently
operating has no way to provide detailed information on the money taken in versus the
money paid out.
In 2014 The Supreme Court of British Columbia halted the Park Board’s attempt to
centralize revenue and this new registration system is just another attempt to do the
same thing. This robust new registration has the capability to flow all revenue to each
Community Association but the City of Vancouver has said “No”.
Our community should be concerned because the money that we generate through the
programs and services we offer goes right back into our community. Our volunteer
board is hard at work every day using the revenue to keep program costs low and to
provide amenities for our community centre.

Our new Park Board Commissioners made campaign promises to our community. These
promises included repairing the relationship with Community Centres and restoring the
independence of the Park Board. We are extremely disappointed that these promises are
not being fulfilled. Commissioners were aware of the attempt to take over the revenue
yet they are remaining silent letting Park Board staff make unilateral decisions that
negatively affect everyone in the community.
Should you have any questions or wish to voice your concern please write to us at
[email protected]
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Killarney Community Centre, I would like to
thank you for your continued support.

Sabre Fencing 12yrs+
Sabre fencing has its origins in the
days of military cavalry with soldiers
fighting on and off of horse-back.
Sabre fencing scores points using both
sword point and blade and is executed with a high degree of speed and
finesse. Sabre is the most dynamic of
the three weapons, with fast paced
engagements. Our courses will cover
the fundamentals of Sabre fencing,
starting with the skills of cutting and
thrusting attacks and introducing the
more complex technical, competitive
and tactical concepts of the sport.
Classes are structured to include
group practice, individual lessons and
competitive fencing with electrical
equipment. Southeast Asian champion
and FIE-rated referee, Israel Cando,
teaches Sabre fencing. All equipment is
provided.
