With special guest opening act Suitcase Junket (AKA Matt Lorenz). Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” or nationally syndicated radio programs such as Garrison Keillor’s, “A Prairie Home Campanion”, “Mountain Stage” or David Dye’s,“World Café”., in front of 15,000 people on the Main Stage of a major festival, or teaching an intimate gathering of students at a Music Camp, Guy feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’. His ‘all’ is the Blues. The routes, and roots, of his blues are as diverse as the music form itself. It can be soulful, moaning out a people’s cry, or playful and bouncy as a hay-ride. He's a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis' creativity. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces. His influences are as varied as the days. Musically, he enjoyed such great blues musicians as Blind Willie McTell (and his way of story telling), Skip James, Manse Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, and Buddy Guy, among others. It was through Taj Mahal that he found his way to the old time blues. He also loved such diverse musicians as Fats Waller and Harry Belafonte. His writing and storytelling have been influenced by Zora Neale Hurston, Garrison Keillor, and by the late Laura Davis (his one hundred and five year-old grandmother). Davis' creative roots run deep. Though raised in the New York City area, he grew up hearing accounts of life in the rural south from his parents and especially his grandparents, and they made their way into his own stories and songs. Davis taught himself the guitar (never having the patience to take formal lessons) and learned by listening to and watching other musicians. One night on a train from Boston to New York he picked up finger picking from a nine-fingered guitar player. His latest album, “Legacy” was picked as one of the Best CDs of the Year by National Public Radio (NPR), and the lead track on it, “Uncle Tom’s Dead” was chosen as one of the Best Songs of the Year. This of course is ironic as FCC rules won’t allow it to be played on the air, but it’s a fitting tribute none the less. With promotional support from Roots of American Music. Playing Music from his brand new CD! With Jon Regen-piano & vocals, Kip Reed-bass, & Dave Green-drums. On one of Nighttown's beautiful 3 season patios! Remarkable. Infectious. Soulful. Just some of the words critics have used to describe Stop Time, the new album by singer, songwriter and pianist Jon Regen, out April 28, 2015 on Motéma Music. Produced by Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney), and featuring Davey Faragher and Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello’s band the Imposters, Stop Time finds Regen at the peak of his songwriting and pianistic powers, with ten original tunes that brim with humor and heart. Songs like “I Will Wait,” “Morning Papers” and “Stop Time” prove Regen a master of the sticky lyric and the penetrating piano hook, recalling the work of forbears like Billy Joel and Randy Newman while simultaneously showcasing Regen’s singular take on modern love. In the words of storied Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, “Stop Time never stops pleasing the ears.” “The album really began after I met the actor Jeremy Irons at a party in London,” Regen says. “We started talking over ample amounts of wine and soon after, he asked me to play the piano for him. Not wanting to disappoint an Oscar winner, I sat down and started playing a bluesy, New Orleans kind of vamp. Without warning, he grabbed a cello off the wall and started playing it like an upright bass. We jammed together on that one song for nearly fifteen minutes! When I returned home to New York City, I married the bluesy feel of that jam session to a set of lyrics I had written about a guy who becomes dismayed watching his youth slip away. The resulting song “Stop Time” became the anchor for the album that was to come.” A protégé of the legendary pianist Kenny Barron, Jon Regen began his career as a sympathetic sideman to renowned jazz artists like Kyle Eastwood and Little Jimmy Scott. After releasing a series of critically acclaimed instrumental jazz recordings, Regen made an abrupt left turn in 2004 and released the singer/songwriter EP Almost Home. Recorded in a single day, the album won immediate acclaim and formally announced Regen’s arrival onto the worldwide concert stage. Regen followed the EP with his full-length 2008 release Let It Go, which featured Andy Summers of the Police and Martha Wainwright. In 2011, Regen co-produced and released the album Revolution. Featuring contributions from Andy Summers, Benmont Tench from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, the album received rave reviews the world over. Bloomberg and Allmusic.com each awarded it “Four Stars”. "For me, the new album is all about hope and home,” Regen says. "It’s a heartfelt album, but it’s also a humorous one because living in New York City is always an adventure! I decided to call the album Stop Time, because it’s the song that started this whole wild ride in the first place. And maybe if we all could stop time once in a while, we would realize how much there already is to celebrate.” Visit Website Watch Video CLEVELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS ALLCITY VOCAL ENSEMBLE $5.00 Sunday 5/10 7:00 pm Buy Tickets Top Vocalists from the Cleveland Public School All-City Ensemble hit the stage at Nighttown! Not surprisingly, Dinah Washington is often listed as Schuur's major vocal influence, and she learned the iconic singer's "What a Difference a Day Makes" while she was still a toddler. As featured in the Woody Allen Movie "Midnight in Paris". Featuring: Stephane Wrembel-guitar, Roy Williams-guitar, Kells Nollenberger-acoustic bass, & Nick Anderson-drums. He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film Midnight in Paris, and he performed live during this year’s Oscar’s telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside—has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. Origins, Wrembel’s fifth and most highly anticipated release yet, finds the multifaceted musician corralling a myriad of influences into a hybrid that simultaneously reflects where he’s been and points to where he’s headed. Although he built his reputation as a stylist in the mode of the iconic French Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel now revels in transcending and expanding. “I’m digging deeper and deeper into my roots,” he says about the album. Origins touches upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock; all of these influences come together as something identifiable only as Stephane Wrembel. It is the most sophisticated representation to date of Wrembel’s superior compositional skills; his melodies burst with a panoply of textures and colors, moods and emotions. “It’s a different state of mind all together,” adds Wrembel, talking about Origins. “I always compose with a picture in mind. That Impressionism approach is the main thing that I’ve carried with me from Fontainebleau.” CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO $30.00 Saturday 5/16 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets State of the Art Acoustic Bassist Leads All-Star Trio for two big shows at Nighttown! Featuring: Christian McBride-acoustic bass, Christian Sands-piano, & Ulysses Owens-drums. Four-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. He was finding his voice, and others were learning to listen for it. In 2000 the lessons of the road came together in the formation of what would become his longest-running project, the Christian McBride Band. Praised by writer Alan Leeds as "one of the most intoxicating, least predictable bands on the scene today," the CMB—saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer, and drummer Terreon Gully—have been collectively evolving McBride's all-inclusive, forward-thinking outlook on music through their incendiary live shows, as chronicled on 2006’s Live at Tonic. Part excursion, part education, the CMB is a vehicle built on a framework of experience and powered by unfettered creativity: a mesmerizing dance on the edge of an electro-acoustic fault line. In 2009 McBride began focusing this same energy through a more traditional lens with the debut of his critically-acclaimed Inside Straight quintet, and again with the Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2012 release The Good Feeling won the GRAMMY for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. As his career entered its third decade, McBride added the role of mentor, tapping rising stars pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. for the Christian McBride Trio’s GRAMMYnominated album Out Here. Currently he hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian” on SiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” a weekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country. Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. From jazz (Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, to R&B (Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown) to pop/rock (Sting, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Don Henley, Bruce Hornsby) to hip-hop/neo-soul (The Roots, D'Angelo, Queen Latifah) to classical (Kathleen Battle, Edgar Meyer, Shanghai Quartet, Sonus Quartet), he is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights, and the other extended in fellowship—and perhaps the hint of a challenge—inviting us to join him. Steve Katz started at 15, studying guitar with Reverend Gary Davis. Steve would sometimes act as road manager for Reverend Davis and met many of the great “rediscovered” blues men like Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt. Steve starting playing in Greenwich Village - during this time there were numerous musicians obsessed with American roots music. Steve, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian and David Grisman – who found the common denominator in jug band music. They and some other friends formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and were courted by Elektra Records for whom they recorded an album in 1964. Steve was asked to audition for the Danny Kalb Quartet. He got the job. Al Kooper joined, and they had the Blues Project, a foray of young white middle-class musicians into the amplified world of Chicago blues. The Blues Project, after two glorious years as house band at the Cafe Au Go Go, decided to break up. After the Blues Project, Steve, Al Kooper, Bobby Colomby and Jim Fielder decided to work up a set, mainly of Al’s new songs, for a benefit concert whereby enough money would be raised to send Al to London where he wanted to live. Joined by Fred Lipsius on alto sax, the concert raised enough money for Al to get a cab to the airport. There was no choice but start another band. Influenced by the Electric Flag and the Buckinghams, a horn section was utilized with rock arrangements that were a touch more sophisticated. Thus, the formation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, a Columbia Records contract, and the album Child is Father to the Man. Recorded and mixed in only two weeks, the album sold moderately well but was a huge critical success. Al left BS & T after only six months. Getting the record company to continue with the band without Kooper was difficult. Auditions were held and David Clayton-Thomas was hired. Columbia reluctantly agreed to go ahead with a new album. That album sold six million copies worldwide and fostered three number one singles. Steve continued with BS & T for five years, during which time the group won three Grammies, were voted best band by the Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll two years in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards, to name a few. Steve wrote many songs during his tenure with BS&T, including his wellloved “Sometimes in Winter”. In 1972 Steve met Lou Reed and became friends. Steve was asked to produce his next record Rock & Roll Animal and then Sally Can’t Dance. After a number of productions during this period, including the wonderful Nightlights by Elliott Murphy, Steve wanted to return again to playing music. Although American Flyer was not a performing band, it gave Steve another creative outlet in which to work and talented people to work with. Steve was joined by writer Eric Kaz, Craig Fuller from Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule from The Velvet Underground. The first of their two albums was produced by George Martin. Steve was offered an opportunity to get closer to the business of music in 1977 with his appointment as East Coast Director of A&R and later as Vice President of Mercury Records. Later Steve became enamored with all things Irish and in 1987 became Managing Director of Green Linnet Records, the foremost record label of traditional Irish music in America. Steve still performs, is a professional photographer, and is now in the process of writing his memoirs. Led by David Kay. University School’s Jazz Ensembles are unique in the Cleveland area – with David Kay (a 25-year faculty member of both US’s music department and the Interlochen Arts Camp Jazz Faculty) at the helm, a small school’s jazz groups have found themselves playing all over the region, soloing with ex-Miles Davis sidemen, been the recipient of Meet the Composer grants, and all the while being an important factor in helping students realize their artistic vision, some of whom, when they first joined, had little clue of what they could attain. US has three jazz groups: the 1:00 Jazz Ensemble, the 2:00 Jazz Ensemble (these named with a nod to the names of groups at the renowned jazz program at the University of North Texas), and the Jazz Combo, selected from the top players in the 1:00 group. The 1:00 is a big band and the 2:00 can range from 5 to 13 players. Numerous players over the years have been particularly bright lights, winning composition awards, studying through programs from Berklee and going on to study music at Oberlin and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. The groups play music that is off the beaten path for the vast majority of pre-college groups, as well as original compositions path for the vast majority of pre-college groups, as well as original compositions and arrangements by its members. US groups have received commendation in Down Beat magazine as 3rd Place Winner in the only Down Beat Jazz Festival ever held, at Universal Studios. Besides Nighttown, they have performed at Tower City, Landerhaven, The Cleveland Grand Prix Parade, First Energy Stadium Club Level, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the House of Blues. Featuring: Jim Stevens-sax, John King-bass, & James Jackson-drums. Larry Coryell has been described by Whitney Balliett as “the most innovative and original guitarist since Charlie Christian.” Beginning with his first recordings with Chico Hamilton and his tenure with the Gary Burton Quartet, Larry has remained in the pantheon of great jazz guitarists for more than forty years. His personal philosophy of music has kept his playing fresh and exciting and makes each of his personal appearances or recordings a special event. In 1974, Larry formed The 11th House, one of the most popular and successful fusion bands of its time. The band, comprising Coryell, Randy Brecker, Alphonse Mouzon, Mike Mandel and Danny Trifan, demolished the barriers between jazz and rock and came up with a sound that merged the best elements of both – the raw emotional power of rock with the more structured ideas of jazz. All of Larry’s work, both singly and collectively, highlights Larry’s uncanny ability to revisit jazz standards and imbue them with the new life and ideas. He brings to them his years of experience in playing, listening and learning and synthesizes them into something greater than the sum of their parts. David Garfield’s mission statement is “I make music.” And “make music” he does, as a world-renowned keyboard artist, producer, and composer. Be it jazz, rock, funk, or world beat – he is the creative force behind the production of many internationally acclaimed recordings. David started his career with jazz greats such as Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard, and Tom Scott in the 70’s. After being on the L.A. scene for several years, he moved into the vast studio world and earned a reputation for fine craftsmanship and versatility. His first international release on Creatchy Records, “Tribute to Jeff,” featured 78 musicians and artists including Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen, Michael McDonald, and Richard Marx, a virtual who’s who in the music industry. Garfield continues to have ongoing music relationships with George Benson (he is frequently Benson’s Musical Director), Boz Scaggs, and Natalie Cole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-gExcvdW7k http://www.creatchy.com/ Watch Video RICHIE COLE WITH THE SAMMY DELEON LATIN JAZZ SEPTET $20.00 Saturday 5/23 8:30 pm Buy Tickets Jazz Meets Salsa when Saxophone Star Richie Cole teams up with the North Coasts top Latin Jazz Group! Featuring: Richie Cole-sax, Sammy DeLeon-timbales, Jackie Warren-piano, Nelson Orta-percussion, Cheito Hernandez-bass, Joe Miller-trumpet, Dick Ingersoll-sax, & Mark Mauldintrombone. Richie Cole started playing alto saxophone when he was 10 years old in his home town of Trenton, New Jersey. Influenced by Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, Cole’s talent and dedication won him a full scholarship from Downbeat Magazine to the Berklee School of Music in Boston. His professional career began in 1969 when he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band. And after stints with the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Doc Severinsen Big Band, Cole formed his own quintet and toured worldwide, doing a great deal to popularize bebop and his own “Alto Madness” style in the 70’s and early 80’s. Cole has performed and recorded with the great vocalese artist Eddie Jefferson, the Manhattan Transfer, Bobby Enriquez, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, Tom Waits, Boots Randolph, and Nancy Wilson, to name just a few of his musical collaborations. Notably, Cole has performed at the Village Vanguard and Carnegie Hall as well as gave a command performance for the Queen of England. Cole has recorded over 50 albums and CDs, including his top hit album “Hollywood Madness” (1979 Muse Records) and his tribute album to Leonard Bernstein, “Richie Cole Plays West Side Story” (1997 Music Masters Jazz). A prolific composer, Cole also finds time to arrange for full big bands, symphony orchestras and frequent performances at jazz festivals worldwide. Moreover, he enjoys sharing his love of music with younger generations and is active recording, touring and presenting university master classes. Cole was appointed to the Board of the National Jazz Service Organization and the Board for the National Endowment for the Arts where he served as chairman for one year. He is also a charter member of the International Association of Jazz Educators. In 2005 he was awarded the State of California Congressional Certificate of Lifetime Achievement in Jazz on behalf of the Temecula Jazz Society. Richie Cole is recognized worldwide for the sweet sounds of his alto saxophone and the creativity behind his Alto Madness Orchestra. The Alto Madness Orchestra was developed by Cole in the early 90's and its continuing popularity is proof of its uniqueness. As Richie explains, "The idea of the Orchestra is the concept and sound of an eighteen-piece big band using only seven instruments, four of which are horns. Not only does this have the big band ensemble sound, it also allows us plenty of room for improvisation as if we were in a quartet setting." Featuring: Kip Reed-electric bass, & Elijah Gilmore-drums. Joe McBride, international R&B and contemporary jazz singer and pianist, moved to Cleveland to make his home here about eight years ago. We are blessed to have this superstar living in our community. Come and be a as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day Not even blindness can stop Joe McBride. His status as one of today’s most popular contemporary jazz musicians is rooted in a solid foundation of talent. Born in 1963 in Fulton, Missouri, he began playing piano at age four and started singing in high school. As a teenager, McBride contracted a degenerative eye disease and eventually lost his eyesight, but his passion for music was never impaired. He continued his studies at the Missouri School for the Blind and at Webster University in suburban St. Louis. McBride trekked to the sunny shores of San Diego for a while before enrolling at North Texas State University to study jazz and performance. Joe McBride has released seven highly acclaimed CD's, including his latest "Looking For a Change" on Concord/Heads Up International records. McBride added another significant title to his impressive discography with the July 2009 release of Lookin’ for a Change. On this recording he features songs originally written and recorded by a range of pop luminaries, including Gnarls Barkley, Coldplay, John Mayer, Seal and Jill Scott, and reinterprets them via straightahead jazz arrangements. “To be honest, I really wanted to try to reach a different audience with my new album,” McBride says. “I’m all about growth. It’s all about making the old things new. It’s okay to look back for just a moment, but the more important idea is to keep our eyes on the future.” Visit Website Watch Video SULTANS OF STRING $20.00 Thursday 5/28 8:00 pm Buy Tickets String Masters from Toronto back by popular demand! Known for dizzying music jams, poly-rhythms and raucous riffs, the Sultans of String sound can't be pinned down -- it's Sable Island meets the Silk Road, with detours through the Gypsy-Jazz coffeehouses of Eastern Europe, next an East Coast Kitchen Party, then over to the bustling markets of Cuba and India! Fiery violin dances with kinetic guitar while a funky bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Throughout, acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound. Since forming 7 years ago, Sultans of String have been on a meteoric rise with an astonishing number of awards and accolades in tow, including two JUNO (Canada’s Grammy) nominations, 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards, 1st place in the ISC (out of 15,000 entries), plus invitations to play with such legendary artists as The Chieftains and David Bromberg. The band is riding a wave of success from their sold out Yalla Yalla! and MOVE Canadian CD release tours, to their national features on CTV’s CanadaAM and CBC’s Canada Live, and their quadruple nomination for the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards, winning World Group of the Year. Their CDs soared to #1 across Canada on Top Ten national radio charts, and Sultans of String won the award for Best Variety Act from Festivals & Events Ontario as well as the International Songwriting Competition! The buzz extends into the U.S., with acclaimed promoter David Wilkes (Emmylou Harris, Bela Fleck, Jesse Cook) now representing the band. Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient and 2009 JUNO Award Nominee, sixstring violinist/bandleader Chris McKhool grew up in a house bursting with music and diversity. His paternal Makhoul grandparents immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in the early 1900’s. His Egyptian-born mother is a piano and theory teacher. Growing up Chris was fed a steady diet of delicious musicality along with Middle Eastern cuisine and violin lessons. From a very young age McKhool was taught the Canadian values of tolerance, respect for all peoples and celebration of culture. His passion for exploring the rhythms and melodies has led him to the far corners of the world, collecting instruments and styles everywhere he went. Travels to the Canadian Arctic, Indonesia, France, England, Cuba, Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Indian Himalayas to perform and conduct music workshops have added to his depth of musical and spiritual understanding of our global community. When McKhool (who has performed with Jesse Cook and Pavlo) first heard founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s rumba rhythm their musical mind-meld created the Sultans of String’s sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and the flamenco guitar. Sultans of String includes such amazing musical friends as: guitarists Kevin Laliberté (Jesse Cook, the Chieftains) & Eddie Paton (Robert Michaels), bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), and Cuban master percussionists Chendy Leon & Alberto Suarez.
