“Our Purpose is to Help Students Internalize the Gospel Message of Salvation in Christ Jesus” Executive Director’s Message Missions A Note from Mark Maietta, Director of Missions “Excellence” This past year has been an amazing journey for Orange Lutheran High School, and a huge personal blessing for me. Thank you for allowing me the privilege to lead your great school. As our Strategic Executive Team has worked on a long term strategic plan, one thing continues to rise up to the top over and over again: Excellence. Our long-term core values are stated as: We provide for excellence in: • Christian Character Development • Academics • Competition & Performance Orange Lutheran is one of the finest high schools in the nation for many reasons, but certainly our joint commitment to being the best in all we do is one of them. The Bible speaks of this in 2 Peter 1 where we are told to make “every effort” to add to our faith. It then lists some amazing qualities for us to constantly improve on concluding that this “will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We strive for excellence because He gave it all for us. Our purpose is “to help students internalize the gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus.” We want to be excellent for Him! The Missions Program at Orange Lutheran High School is involved in communities locally, nationally and internationally. Three times a year we partner with several local churches and work in local, low income neighborhoods. On these days we are doing construction projects, leading activities with children, and directing prayer walks through the community. In the last two years, we have worked with Lot318, an inner city ministry in Placentia; Children’s Hunger Fund, an international relief organization headquartered in Sylmar, California; Giving Children Hope in Buena Park, California, and the Anaheim Vineyard Food Pantry. Additionally, we are currently in discussions with the Los Angeles Christian Health Clinic and we are having our students create artwork for the walls at the clinic and help with communication with local politicians. OLu’s Missions Program also comes alongside ministries throughout the United States to represent Christ in local communities. Since 2005, we have sent eight teams to New Orleans to help with the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, one group to Joplin Missouri after a tornado destroyed much of that city, one to Galveston Texas following Hurricane Ike, another to Billings Montana to minister on the Crow Reservation, and three to Bishop California to partner with the Paiute Tribe and local churches. During the 2012-2013 school year 370 people were involved in our ministry within the United States. In the OLu Missions Program we are increasingly finding ourselves in more relational ministry opportunities whereas early on, we were more focused on building projects. Now we do some construction as well as working in elementary schools, adult day care centers, food and clothing distribution facilities and helping with community events. Our focus internationally is similar to our ministry goals here in the United States. We desire to partner with organizations in the local communities we visit and come alongside them to enhance their ministry. We work with our partners in India, Kenya, Tanzania, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Northern and Southern China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and Romania. We are returning to each of these locations to have a long-term impact for Christ. Mark Maietta Director of Missions [email protected] 714-998-5151 Ext. 649 To God be the glory, N. China outreach & reforestation project, OLu Forest Todd J. Moritz Executive Director [email protected] 714-282-4602 (direct line) “Orange Lutheran was more of just a blessing from a God, and an open door, rather than a choice of mine. I transferred my sophomore year because my parents and I wanted me to have a better opportunity to grow as a student-athlete, and as a man of Christ. Here at Orange Lutheran, I feel home and I feel like I am loved and welcomed here. They treat me with respect and kindness whenever I am somewhere, and they just want the best for us all.” – Makai Lui ‘14 OLu students complete a shade structure, Paiute Reservation Alex Barnette ‘14, sharing Christ’s love Appalachia, KY Summer 2013 Dominican Republic Team and our ministry partner “In my opinion, the teachers, the focus on God, and the many opportunities Orange Lutheran offers makes it a great place to go to school.” – Alexis Rivera ‘14 Missions | Page 1 Academics Academics A Note from Leslie Smith, Our Principal The 2012-2013 school year marked Orange Lutheran High School’s 40th anniversary, fondly referred to as Lancer40. Together, and united in Christ’s love, students, alumni, faculty, staff, family, friends, and community leaders celebrated 40 years of ministry proclaiming the gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus, the purpose for which Orange Lutheran exists. In 1973, Lutheran High School Association of Orange County opened its doors to nearly 100 students, and in the fall of 2012, the school welcomed the strongest enrollment in Lancer history with 1,346 students. Over the course of the past 40 years, the growing success of the athletic programs resulted in increased media attention and ultimately a new nickname: Orange Lutheran High School. The increased public attention continues to provide the school with the opportunity to celebrate students’ success, but even more importantly it provides the school with the opportunity to give God the glory – a great platform to share the gospel! The 2012-2013 school year was a particularly unique year for the culmination of the accreditation self-study and six-year visit especially as it consisted of a number of extraordinary circumstances and opportunities including vacancies in key executive administrative positions and the celebration of Orange Lutheran’s 40th anniversary. On Saturday, February 9, 2013, after an exhaustive search, the Board of Directors extended a Divine Call to Mr. Todd Moritz. The Lancer community rejoiced when Mr. Moritz accepted the call as Orange Lutheran High School’s seventh Executive Director. During the vacancy in this key executive leadership role, administration resolved to bridge the gap and lead as a formidable team unified in Christ’s love committed to the purpose and core values of the school. This resolution resulted in a successful school year highlighted in April with a visit from our accreditation committee that consisted of six educators from various California schools (high schools and college alike). They spent four days on campus visiting our classrooms, reviewing documents, inspecting facilities and programs, and talking with students, teachers, staff, Board members and our parent Advisory group. The faculty and staff spent over 18 months preparing for this visit by gathering data and writing about the many wonderful aspects of Orange Lutheran as well as plans to continually improve. As a result of this visit, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, also known as WASC, awarded Orange Lutheran High School with a six-year clear term, the highest accreditation status possible. The Accreditation report indicated that the visiting committee was impressed with the wideranging culture of excellence at Orange Lutheran, the overall operation of the school, and the pride and passion of students, faculty and staff that is tangibly felt when walking the halls. Specifically, the committee noted strengths in the following areas: organization of student learning; support for student, personal and academic growth; curriculum, instruction and assessment techniques, and the development and utilization of resources for excellence. In addition, as a result of this visit, the National Lutheran Schools Accreditation (NLSA) identified Orange Lutheran as a candidate to be recognized as an exemplary school. The application process will conclude with a visit in January 2014 for this special recognition. A critical needs assessment of school operations identified the need for additional athletic space to increase scheduling options in order to provide academic benefit for students. As a result, the School Board worked closely with the administrative team to develop a building expansion plan that would include a second gym, three additional classrooms, additional athletic facilities and meeting spaces, and a large student union complete with new and improved food services. This project and its accompanying capital campaign called “Beyond Expectations” were launched at the Ground Breaking ceremony on June 25, 2013. “It is the happiest school I have ever set foot on. God is alive and moving.” – Collin Massey ‘13 Page 2 | Academics On Thursday, May 30, Orange Lutheran High School celebrated its 38th commencement service for the Class of 2013. Of the 313 graduating seniors, over 83% were accepted into a four year institution, and 97% reported that they would be attending a two or four year college from 122 different schools in 30 states and three countries, including Japan and China. Over 30% of the graduates reported that they would be attending a Lutheran, Christian, or Catholic college or university, and approximately 62% of them (190 students) reported that they would be attending colleges in California. Many of these students were offered scholarships. Over the past seven years, Orange Lutheran students have increased their scholarship acceptance by over 140%. The average scholarship per Orange Lutheran student has increased 128% in the same seven years. Specifically, the Class of 2013 accepted over two million dollars in merit and talent scholarships, which is an increase of 59% from 2011 and 12% increase from 2012. This total amounts to an average scholarship of $16,124 per receiving graduate, and 95% of these scholarships are renewable for four years. Orange Lutheran continues to successfully compete at the highest levels in the CIF Southern Section and the Trinity League, considered one of the most competitive leagues in the nation. The 2012-2013 school year welcomed five new varsity head coaches including the addition of boys and girls Water Polo as a new sport to our school. Sixteen programs advanced to compete in the CIF Playoffs. Boys’ Tennis finished as League Champs; Boys’ Golf finished as CIF Runner Up; Boys’ Track finished as CIF Champs. Over 30 athletes were recognized at various college Letter of Intent Signing Day events and began playing at the collegiate level during the fall of 2013. A large number of athletes were honored with special recognitions including all CIF and all Trinity League selections, media “Athletes of the Week” and “Scholar Athletes of the Week,” as well as various other leadership, academic, and character awards. Orange Lutheran is more than just a high school; though we are recognized for our innovative excellence and success in many areas, what truly sets us apart and has enabled us to continue to grow these past 40 years is our uncompromising commitment to our purpose and our unity in Christ as a Lancer family. The faculty and staff are committed to modeling our Savior’s expression of love through serving and genuinely caring for others. Orange Lutheran is a place where students are FIRST! In everything we consider, plan, hope for, and implement, we always put the students’ best interest at heart. Orange Lutheran is unlike any other school because of the people God uniquely assembles here. When we proudly chant, “We Are OLu,” what we are really exclaiming is our commitment to being united in Christ as a Lancer family! Leslie Smith Principal [email protected] 714-998-5151 Ext. 672 “Academically, Orange Lutheran was the best thing to ever happen to me. I am so grateful my parents persisted on me coming here because I could not get a better education anywhere else.” – Sydney Walker ‘15 Academics | Page 3 Report on Giving Report on Giving A Note from the Advancement Office For the last 41 years, Orange Lutheran High School has delivered the good news of Jesus Christ to thousands of God’s kids. What an incredible miracle! Each year as a result of the generosity of so many, Orange Lutheran has been able to grow and improve, allowing us to continually strive for the excellence in all that we do to help our students internalize the Gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus. 4.1 Giving Trends Total Giving, $m Total Donors 1,000 3.5 900 Beyond Expectation Campaign in Gold 800 3 Visions & Values Giving in Grey 2.5 700 600 2 500 1.5 400 300 1 200 0.5 100 0 2012-2013 Number of Donors 822 Donors Total Gifts ($) $3,535,266 4.2 The Cost of Excellence Funds to Be Raised: $3,315.60 Congregation Contribution: $1,000.00 Tuition: $10,440.00 Association Member Full Cost of Excellence: $14,755.60 per student Non-Association Member Tuition: $13,375.00 Funds to Be Raised: $1,380.60 12-13 11-12 10-11 09-10 08-09 07-08 12-13 11-12 10-11 09-10 08-09 07-08 0 We are told by Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Approximately $3,300 had to be raised per student in order to meet the tuition levels in place for the 2012-13 school year. In addition to that amount, nearly $1.6 million was awarded in financial aid in order to allow a total of 348 students to be able to attend Orange Lutheran. “The morals and values of OLu are great and the teachers and staff are unbelievable! They care about you and show interest in your accomplishments. Orange Lutheran High School brings out the best in you to become a champion for life.” – Elijah Stanley ‘13 Page 4 | Report on Giving As you consider the gift to make this year, please consider the following: “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God,” 2 Corinthians 9:11. A Note from Rachel Eklund, Director of Student Activities Each year OLu hosts two school wide Service Days that focus on our local and global community. In the Fall, our students partnered with our entire community of parents, businesses, association and other churches in order to pack over 5,000 boxes for Operation Christmas Child through Samaritans Purse. These boxes were shipped to several different countries, providing a true Christmas gift for thousands of children who would not have otherwise received one. All of these boxes contained essentials, fun items and most importantly the Gospel message of salvation through Christ Jesus. The Spring service day is the Day of Dreams. Students with special needs from area schools come to OLu to enjoy a day of fun and love in Christ. The visiting students are paired with an OLu buddy and they are given a schedule to follow that consists of different activities including sports, art projects, and a trip to the Nechita for some performing arts entertainment. Each receives a framed picture with their buddy. This is truly an incredible day where OLu students’ servants hearts come through. The senior class led project was “Task Force: Heroes”. The students partnered with Healing Heroes Ministries to bring support to wounded warriors at Camp Pendleton, raising over $10,000. Over 100 boxes filled with gift cards as well as essential information helpful to these soldiers and their families as they transition back to civilian life were delivered in April. Some of the Student Leadership Team seniors had the honor of delivering the boxes to our heroes and having the opportunity to personally thank them for their sacrifices. Additionally, our Beyond Expectations Campaign will add to this environment, which provides our students with a wellrounded Christian education. Merely saying “thank you” doesn’t seem to do justice to your efforts. “Orange Lutheran is a great place to go because it is a school that really care about you and looks for the best interest for you. I chose Orange Lutheran because I knew this school was a place where I could feel comfortable at and share my religion with others and grow in it as well. The term “Lancer for Life” is used around Orange Lutheran a lot. After a year of attending I start to understand the slogan better because once you go to Orange Lutheran you have an amazing pride for the school” – Hope Pilkerton ‘16 Page 10 | Donors Alumni Giving A Note from Courtney Kruger, Alumni Relations Coordinator The 2012-13 school year marked an incredible milestone for Orange Lutheran High School alumni and friends with the celebration of 40 years together as a Lancer family. It is my great privilege and blessing to serve our alumni, while also ensuring that today’s Orange Lutheran student – and tomorrow’s – continues the tradition of Christ-centered excellence. On Sunday, April 21, 2013, the Alumni Board hosted the Second Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to honor former Lancers for their athletic achievements and to celebrate the rich tradition of competition and excellence at Orange Lutheran. The 2013 Inductees honored at this momentous event included Gaylord Greene ’88, Michael Fleischi ’88, Elizabeth Reed Bonasangue ’89, Renee Wright Matheson ’91, Joe Juliano ’95, Laura Miklos Crawford ’01, and coach Jerry Simmons. These athletic milestones are the drivers for the ambitious next generation of Lancers, and we look forward to complementing future Orange Lutheran athletes on their own achievements. Orange Lutheran High School kicked off the year-long 40th anniversary celebration of Lancer40 on Friday, August 24, 2012. Together, alumni, legacy families, current parents, founding families, and community leaders, gathered on campus to watch the unveiling of a mural honoring the history of the school, as well as special chapel service, featuring guest speakers and a video montage. It was an amazing way to share our Lancer pride with decades of Orange Lutheran friends and families. The Lancer community continued to rejoice Lancer40 throughout the 2012-2013 school year. During Homecoming week, students and friends decorated the hallways to represent 40 years of Christ-centered excellence. On Friday, November 2, 2012, Orange Lutheran hosted a special Homecoming pep rally for current and former students, with a special “fly by” appearance from the original Captain Pride! Mr. Jerry Simmons, former faculty and alumni parent, passed the honorable baton to Mr. Jeremy Nelson, class of 1995, to carry on the tradition of Lancer pride! The students and alumni spent that evening at the muchanticipated varsity football game. During halftime, Orange Lutheran welcomed former Homecoming Kings and Queens on the field for a spectacular halftime show for all attendees. It was a special, historic year to be a part of uniting our past and present as we look forward to the next chapters of Orange Lutheran High School! We thank you for your continued support, and remember, together, we are “Lancers for Life! Courtney Kruger ’08 Alumni Relations Coordinator “Orange Lutheran has such a captivating atmosphere. I loved how Christ was part of the every day routine at school, and ultimately decided Orange Lutheran was the right school for me.” – Chandler Regan ‘14 Alumni Donors | Page 11 Nancy Paul Scholarship Power of the Dream Gala the classroom however, Miss Paul is a prime example of a Christian servant.
