Delhi – India’s Past and Its Future Welcome to Delhi, the intriguing cultural and historical center of India’s past and future, built over the last 450 years by a string of empires. First the Hindu and Moslem dynasties, followed by the powerful Moguls who ruled until the British took over. Experience the cultures, politics and 4 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand religions of India’s colorful past in its monuments, its palaces, and in the faces of its people. The fascinating city of Delhi offers more than a millennium of history in stone - historians agree that the city’s intrigue is born out of the eight cities that have been built upon this site, not on top of one another, but side-by-side. It is still possible to wander through the great epochs of Indian history without ever leaving Delhi. This city, consisting of Old and New Delhi, is the work of Hindu, Muslim and British builders, and is a study in the merging of past, present and future. The winners of the auction prize arrive at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport by flight (Flight details awaited). As we exit, we are accorded a traditional floral welcome. We are transferred to our hotel and check-in. The Standard check in time at the hotel is 1400 hours. Overnight: The Imperial (Heritage room) http://www.selectcollection.com/the- imperial/ DAY 02 IN DELHI Breakfast is at the hotel. Morning: We proceed for the visit of New Delhi. New Delhi – Seat of the Largest Democracy in the World We start with New Delhi and proceed to the Qutub Minar complex which is Delhi's Eiffel Tower, its Statue of Liberty and Nelson's Column. Visit the mosques, mausoleums and ruins of forts that lie around it including the Iron Pillar which is Delhi's totem pole 24 feet high, made of 99% steel and has stood for 1600 years without a speck of rust on it. We then drive to Raisina Hill. Drive past the Viceroy's House (now the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the residence of the President of India) and Lutyen's magnum opus. It is larger than Versailles and architecturally is a fusion of Indian and Western design. Within the courtyard is the 145 feet high Jaipur Column, a symbol of victory designed by Lutyen. Lutyen created another masterpiece - the 250 acre Mughal Gardens on the grounds of the Rashtrapati Bhawan which at one time required the care of 418 men. The great Vice Regal Palace required a staff of 2000. At the foot of Raisina Hill is the India Gate, a war memorial arch which Lutyen built in honor of 60000 soldiers who died in WW I. It is also inscribed with the names of some 13000 Indian and British soldiers missing presumed dead. Next to it is Lutyen's last imperial monument he built; a stone canopy in which he placed the marble statue of King George V after his death in 1936. 5 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand Afternoon: We proceed for the visit of Old Delhi. Organized Chaos – a unique visit of Old Delhi We proceed to India Gate from where we proceed for a Metro Ride on Delhi’s new pride and joy – its Metro system. We embark our train and proceed to Old Delhi. We disembark the Metro and exit into a completely different world from where we boarded our train in the confines of Lutyen’s majestic New Delhi. We proceed to Old Delhi and to the Red Fort where we board the cycle rickshaw outside the Red Fort and drive through Chandani Chowk, with its narrow, winding lanes which is a memorable experience. This is perhaps one of Delhi's most populated areas and the largest marketplace jewelers spice merchants, food vendors, money lenders, shopping arcades, workshops as well as residences, are crammed here. Our cycle rickshaw stops at the Juma Masjid, which is said to be the last edifice built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in 1648. It is the largest mosque in India - where 22,000 people can pray together at any given time. Our next stop is Rajghat the place where Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation was cremated. It is a place that evokes the peace and simplicity that he symbolizes for all people at all times. Agra city is a virtual gateway to a world of discovery. It has witnessed the rise of the pomp and pageantry of three great Mughal monarchs – Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan, all of whom lavished on this fabled city, their love and riches to transform the land into one of the greatest centers of art, culture, learning and commerce. Much of the city’s impressive past lives is evidence even today, in the haunting presence inside the monuments and in the majesty of the buildings. Upon arrival in Agra, we proceed for visit of the Taj Mahal and Agra fort. 6 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand It is said that the world is divided into two parts; those who have seen the Taj Mahal and those who have not. We visit the Taj Mahal (Taj Mahal is shut on Friday) – often described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love. The Taj Mahal took 22 years to be built and in total 20000 people worked on the Taj. Several experts contributed to the designing of the Taj Mahal such as the Frenchman Austin of Bordeaux and the Italian Veroneo of Venice. The Taj Mahal is amazingly graceful from almost any angle. The semi -precious stones inlaid into the marble in beautiful designs are through a process called "Pietra Dura". Designer tip: Do not engage in a visual or verbal contact with touts near the Taj Mahal. Important information: Due to security reasons, there are certain personal articles that are not permitted within the complex of the Taj Mahal such as mobile phones, cigarettes, lighters, match boxes, eatables and any sharp instruments. The Great Red Fort of Agra! We proceed for a visit of the Agra Fort. The Agra Fort’s construction was started by Emperor Akbar in 1565 when he was just 23 years of age. Within the fort are several fascinating buildings – the Pearl Mosque built of marble, the Hall of Public Audiences, the Hall of Private Audiences where the famous "peacock throne" was kept, the Octagonal Tower, the Jehangir Palace built by Akbar for his son Jehangir and the Khas Mahal, a beautiful white marble structure used as a private palace. After the visits, we proceed to our hotel and checkin. The Standard check in time at the hotel is 1400 hours. Afternoon: We are at leisure. Designer Tip: (1) A visit to Kohinoor that houses an embroidery museum. The displays here are the works of one very special person. This museum also houses a jewelry shop. ( 2) Akbar is another shop in Agra that demonstrates the fine art of marble inlay. (3) The Spa at the hotel is one of the finest in the country. Time permitting, we highly recommend this indulgence. Please book in advance and services on direct payment basis. Overnight: Oberoi Amarvilas (Premier room) http://www.selectcollection.com/the-oberoi-amarvilas/ 7 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand DAY 04 DRIVE AGRA – FATEHPUR SIKRI – JAIPUR Breakfast is at the hotel. Truly Memorable! Wake up to the Taj Mahal! As we open our eyes, we can view this magnificent monument from our bed! Morning: We drive to Fatehpur Sikri (37 km / approx 1 hour) which is perched atop a rocky ridge. Fatehpur Sikri is the work of one man – it was a vigorous city built with inspiration and genius by a king who had not yet turned 28 – the Emperor Akbar. Unfortunately, at that time Akbar had no son and heir to his vast empire. He visited several holy men and shrines to seek blessings for the birth of a son, but in vain - till one day he visited the saint Salim Chisti who predicted the birth of a son. Akbar quickly built a few royal palaces close to the saint's hermitage and the queen who had just conceived moved in. Thus was born Mohammed Salim named after the saint. Akbar was so overjoyed that he decided to move his court from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri in gratitude. Fatehpur Sikri - the "City of Victory" was thus built as an affirmation of faith, hope and of joy. But 15 years later this dream city with its lofty mosque, pleasure pavilions, sunken gardens and multi - level courts was abandoned. Many believed that the city was abandoned due to a shortage of water; another reason was that Akbar found it impractical to maintain 2 establishments - at Agra and at Fatehpur Sikri - simultaneously. Walking through Fatehpur Sikri’s empty palaces, one cannot but be transported back 400 years, and visualize the glory and the splendor that must have existed. After sightseeing of Fatehpur Sikri, we proceed to Jaipur. (apprx 04 hours) Jaipur – The Pink City Jaipur was one of the first examples in the world of city planning. The 250 year old city is a startling blend of forts and palaces, of teeming markets, shops and transport of every kind, from cars to camels! The city is a living testament to one of the most remarkable men of his age - Jai Singh II was extremely talented politically as well as on the battle field. Indulging in his passion for science and the arts resulted in the creation of Jaipur. 8 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand However, much of the pinkness of the city goes to the credit of Maharaja Mansingh who dressed up the city in the symbolic welcoming color when the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII visited Jaipur in 1876. Jaipur today, is the capital of Rajasthan with a population of over 2½ million people. Jaipur is called the “Pink City”, for by law; all the buildings in the old city must be painted a deep saffronpink. Apart from being an important administrative, commercial and educational center, Jaipur has a variety of manufacturing industries. It is especially known for its arts and crafts: jewelry, enamel work, hand-painted fabrics and stone sculptures. Above everything, Jaipur is an extraordinary colorful place. On its streets you see women in their brilliant red and orange head coverings and sweeping skirts, and men in their equally vivid turbans and upturned moustaches. Jaipur is also a city of polo which is played on horseback, elephants and at times on bicycles! We arrive at our hotel and check in. Overnight: Rambagh Palace (Palace room) http://www.selectcollection.com/rambagh-palace/ DAY 05 IN JAIPUR Breakfast is at the hotel Amber – The Medieval Rajput Citadel “I have seen many royal palaces, but for varied and picturesque effect, for the richness of carving, for wild beauty of situation and the strangeness of finding such a building in such a place and country, I am able to compare nothing with Amber.” Bishop Heber, 1824. Morning: We drive to Amber, the former capital of Jaipur state stunningly situated on a hillside and overlooking a lake which reflects its terraces and ramparts. To add the spirit of adventure and royalty, we ascend the hill on elephant back (Subject to availability) / jeeps. Amber is a fortified complex of many splendid palaces evolved over a period of six centuries. Should you prefer to ascend the hill up to the fort on elephant back, there are some procedures that need to be followed: sign a liability waiver; stand in line to await your turn….an elephant can take only 2 guests; depart the hotel at a given time. 9 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand Following our visit to the Amber Fort, we have some free time to shop. This will complete the experience of this vibrant city. Jaipur is famous for its arts and crafts, jewelry, carpets and textiles. “A living Palace where the sightseer knows and feels that he is being followed by scores of unseen eyes” ------- Rudyard Kipling Afternoon: We proceed on a city tour, visiting the exquisite and sprawling City Palace and Museum comprising of several courtyards, gardens and buildings and is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. It is almost a city within a city. The former Maharaja still lives in part of the Palace. The museum has an extensive collection of art, carpets, enamelware, old weapons, miniature paintings, an armory of guns and swords, costumes and dresses of the former Maharajas and Maharanis of Jaipur. On display are 2 huge silver vessels which have found their way into the world record of being the largest single pieces of silver in the world. A former Maharaja used them to carry his drinking water to England as he was a devout Hindu. Adjacent to the city palace is the Observatory built in 1728 by Jai Singh who had a passion for astronomy. Stop at the highly ornamented Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds built in 1799 which has no less than 953 little windows and balconies. It is a stunning example of Rajput artistry and was originally built to enable ladies of the royal household to watch the everyday life in the streets below through the delicately honeycombed sandstone windows. Designer Tip: Instant tailoring is an art in Jaipur. Should you wish to have an Indian outfit tailor-made, the local tailors will get this done within 24 hours on direct payment basis. If you wish to duplicate clothing that you already possess, the local tailors will be able to assist. Jaipur is a treasure house for pashminas, precious and semi-precious stones, jewelry, carpets, and local handicrafts. The specialty here is the fine art of blue pottery and hand printing on cloth. Bargaining is a must! Overnight: Rambagh Palace (Palace room) DAY 06 DRIVE JAIPUR – JODHPUR Breakfast is at the hotel. Early morning: We drive to Jodhpur (Approx. 06 hours)- Arrival midday. Jodhpur: The Blue City at the edge of the Desert Beginning in 1549, when the city was called Jodhagarh, the Rathore clan of Rajputs fought and ruled from the virtually impregnable fort until their 10 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand territory covered 35000 sq. miles making it the largest Rajput state. Today, the former capital of the state of Marwar retains much of its medieval character. And then came Jodhpurs…….. Sir Pratap Singh was the inventor of “Jodhpurs”, or riding breeches as we know them today. Since he virtually lived on horseback, he gradually evolved this item of clothing with the help of his tailor. It all began, apparently, when he got tired of the way his traditional Rajput riding pyjamas would get frayed on the inside of his knees, as he rode. He later went on to invent ankle-length Jodhpur boots and the close-collared Jodhpuri coat which came to be adopted as the semi-formal dress of the Jodhpur court. Upon arrival, we check-in to our hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace. In the afternoon we proceed to the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. The Victory Fort Jaswant Thada and the Mystic We visit the Mehrangarh Fort, which stands sentinel over the doorway to the Thar Desert. This fort was the scene of many a heroic tale and even today one can see the cannons proudly displayed even though they no longer boom from its ramparts. The swords that flashed in the desert sun now lie in the fort museum but if they could speak they would tell of the courage and loyalty of their masters. A visit to the fort, built for defense, plunges us straight into its past. As you walk up the steep road to its entrance the imprints of the 'hands' of brave women, "Satis" who preferred death to dishonor speak of extraordinary human courage. The music of the 'Mirashis', the traditional royal musicians even today greets every visitor to the fort as it did centuries ago. On the way down from the fort, on left is Jaswant Thada, the graceful marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. His son Maharaja Sardar Singhji built the Taj Mahal of Marwar in the memory of Maharaj Jaswant Singhji II of Jodhpur. The main memorial has been built like a temple with intricately carved marble stone that is sculpted by the genius artesian. A visit to this structure is through the rocky hills giving it a secluded and a mystic aura. Designer Tip: Shop for antiques, traditional art and craft, jewelry. . Overnight: Umaid Bhawan Palace (Palace room) http://www.selectcollection.com/umaid- bhawan-palace/ 11 Highlights of India – Tour to be auctioned in aid of Hand-in-Hand DAY 07 DRIVE JODHPUR – ROHET Breakfast is at the hotel. Morning: We proceed by road to Rohet (approx. 1 hour) The village of Rohet is a delightful place to explore. Situated at about 45 kms from Jodhpur, this region is full of life. A variety of animals like Neelgai (Blue Bull), Chinkara (Indian Gazelle) and Black Buck roam around freely, without any fear of being hunted down as hunting these animals is illegal. These animals are protected mainly by the local Bishnoi community. The Bishnoi are a peace loving community and believe very strongly in preserving animal and plant life. About 350 years ago, hundreds of Bishnois sacrificed their lives in order to prevent the local king from cutting down the trees in their area. The Bishnois were inspired by their spiritual leader, Jambeshwarji, who lived in the 15th century. He was a wise ecologist, who believed that no human or animal life could survive without vegetation. He set about teaching the principals of animal and vegetable preservation and laid down 29 (bees means twenty & noi means nine) very simple principals. The followers of Jambeshwarijri live by these 29 principles and, hence , are called the Bishnois. The Bishnoi homes are clean and immaculate and the people are very hospitable. The Bishnoi women with their attractive attire, silver trimmings and some of the most gorgeous jewelry, are an attractive sight. Upon arrival in Rohet we leave our luggage at our hotel and proceed on a day tour with Hand in Hand, visiting Self Help Groups containing women that Hand in Hand trains in business skills and entreprenuership. By saving small amounts of money and the training they are given they have the possibility to develop already existing, or create new, businesses catering to the local market. This way the disposable income of the family incerases and our experience tells us that this, in turn, allows the children to go to school instead of having to work. It has 29 halls containing 1444 pillars each carved with intricate, delicate carvings. No two pillars are alike.
