The 13th original production
by the Puerto Rican Folkloric
Dance company, Mi Tierra
Boricua, will be held at 3pm on
Sunday, December 6th, in Austin’s
Carver Museum Boyd Vance
Theatre, 1165 Angelina Street.
Mi Tierra Boricua is a refreshing blend of fun and adventure that brings oral history to life
through theater, traditional music
and dance. Written in English,
Spanish, and Taino, this drama tells
the story of a mountain tobacco
community in the 1940s and the
adventures they face as they leave
the mountains of Puerto Rico in
search of a better life. Featuring the
poetry of Julia de Burgos, this
drama will inspire you to consider
your own journey.
Mi Tierra Boricua was written
by Tekina-eiru Maynard with the
support of community elders in
Puerto Rico including Jesus Reyes
and others from Tekina-eiru's
pueblo Taino who shared oral
history and memories of the mountains of Boriken from days gone
by. Zulmarie Alverio shared poetry
and insights on the world Julia de
Burgos wrote about. Actor Luis
Olmeda was a mentor in the script
writing.

La voz y estilo único de la artista Aida Cuevas
Nacida en la Ciudad de México,
Aída Gabriela Cuevas Castillo es
conocida artísticamente como Aída
Cuevas, una cantante y actriz mexicana
desde 1975. Su voz y estilo único le han
permitido cultivar una carrera de larga
duración y con éxito, dejando una huella
notable en la historia de la música
mexicana. A través de su carrera ha
publicado 37 álbumes con ventas de más
de 7 millones de copias y ha ganado más
de 300 premios.
El álbum Enhorabuena, lanzado
en 2002, es producido por Bebu Silvetti y
fue nominada para el premio Grammy
Latino. Fue ganadora en la categoría
tradicional al mejor álbum de Tango con
el álbum “De corazón a corazón...
Mariachi Tango” en la 11ª Entrega del
Grammy Latino. Esta obra es la
producción número 30 de Cuevas,
lanzado en 2010 donde plasma la fusión
de dos grandes géneros de América
Latina: el Mariachi y el Tango.
Recientemente, fue nominada en la 16ª
Entrega del Grammy Latino en la
categoría de Mejor Álbum de Música
Ranchera por su álbum Pa’ Que Sientas
Lo Que Siento, con lanzamiento en junio
2015.
Entre las canciones más notables
son Cari Cari, Te Doy Las Gracias, A la
luz de los Cocuyos, Quizás Mañana, Un
Mundo Raro, Mi Ciudad, Qué Bonita es

Nació con el canto en las venas.
Desde muy pequeña, manifestó su afición
por la música, al mostrar aptitudes para el
canto y el baile, de los cuales hizo gala en
las fiestas de la escuela. No pasó
demasiado tiempo para que sus padres se
dieran cuenta que Aída era poseedora de
una voz inigualable.
Aída Cuevas comenzó como han
empezado los grandes artistas, desde
abajo. En octubre de 1975, fue su inicio en
el programa de radio “Taller XEW” y a
partir de esto, fue buscada por
empresarios y conductores de Tv. Muy
pronto llegaron los contratos para
presentarse en importantes sitios y
tradicionales programas, en compañía de

reaparece en Europa, cantando y
modelando los trajes de corte prehispánico
de Pedro Loredo, impactando con su voz
en Málaga y Torremolinos, deleitando en
toda la Costa del Sol. Además ha
maravillado con su voz a grandes
personalidades como Richard Burton,
Sean Connery e al Sha de Irán. Gracias a
la enseñanza del maestro Loredo, ella
adquiere y refuerza su vocación a vestir

Tomas Salas and WT Bryant are
two local cultural workers who
have been building cigar box guitars for a
few years. The guitars are made from
found objects and range from one string
pieces to double neck, amplified guitars.
Enjoy a display of their work that will be
available for sale, just in time for the
holidays.
Tomas Salas is an actor, set
design engineer, and long-time cultural
activist in central Texas. He was one of
photography and
ceramics. WT sometimes pretends to play
guitar.
Both Salas and Bryant discovered Cigar Box Guitars several years ago
and fell in love with them as an art form.
The guitars are playable art, timeless and
have been used for decades.“Cigar Box
Guitars” will be on display and available
for sale at the Texas Folklife House
Gallery between December 12 and
January. An opening reception will be
held on Saturday, December 12 from 3:00

The
traditional
play, an adaptation by Rupert Reyes, is
centered around the pastores (shepherds)
as they traveled to Bethlehem in order to
witness the birth of Jesus. Pastorelas are
one of the oldest and most enduring
Christmas traditions in Mexico.
Originally, the Mexican
Pastorela was a religious theater
created for the purposeof converting
“heathen native.” Once appro-priated by
popular theater, it was never the same.
Pastorelas take many forms and are
vigorously influenced by invention and
improvisation from the talent participating. Pastorelas may be religious, folk
drama, theater, or even urban folk drama,
but a very particular structure is maintained.
The bilingual play resonates with
both Spanish and English speaking audience members and
incorporates
traditional
music and
dance from
various
regions of
Mexico. This
production is
an entertaining way the
whole family can enjoy this Christmas
classic.
Thursday, December 10 and 17 are
“pay what you wish” one hour before the

16th Annual Latin GRAMMY Gives Out
Lifetime Achievement and Trustee Awards
The Latin Recording Academy
gave Lifetime Achievement Awards to
Gato Barbieri, Ana Belén and Víctor
Manuel, Angela Carrasco, Djavan, El
Gran Combo De Puerto Rico, and Pablo
Milanés. Federico Britos, Humberto
Gatica and Chelique Sarabia were the
recipients of the prestigious Trustees
Award.
The honorees werrrrrrre recognized at 16th Annual Latin GRAMMY
Awards festivities which took place in
mid-November.
“It is a great honor to recognize
and celebrate such a distinguished and
dynamic group of honorees who have
been the creators of such timeless art,”
said The Latin Recording Academy
President/CEO Gabriel Abaroa Jr. “Their
outstanding accomplishments and
passion for their craft have created a
timeless legacy. By honoring them we
honor our music. They surely will
continue to have an influence in both our
culture and the Latin music industry.”
This Special Award is presented
by vote of The Latin Recording
Academy’s Board of Trustees to
performers who have made creative
contributions of outstanding artistic
significance to the field of recording
during their careers.
Argentinian saxophonist Gato
Barbieri is considered a living jazz
legend. Emerging from a family of
musicians, Barbieri began playing
professionally as a teenager, which led
to his five-decade career covering
virtually the entire jazz landscape,
including free jazz (with trumpeter Don
Cherry in the mid-’60s), avant-garde
jazz and film scoring (Last Tango In
Paris) to his ultimate embrace of Latin
music. Barbieri created a rebellious but
highly accessible musical style, combining contemporary jazz with Latin
American genres and incorporating
elements of instrumental pop.
Lifelong partners Ana Belén and
Víctor Manuel have performed and
collaborated for more than four decades,
recording countless songs together and
as solo artists. In the ’80s the duo
attained populari not only in their native
Spain but worldwide with “La Puerta De
Alcalá,” which reached No. 1 for seven
weeks in Spain. In 2015 the duo released
their latest, Canciones Regaladas (Gift
Songs), which features songs written by
Carlos Berlanga, Rubén Blades, Leonard
Cohen, José Alfredo Jiménez, Billy Joel,
and Astor Piazzolla. Ana and Víctor
continue to tour and are currently
Djavan
performing in Spain.
Born in the Dominican Republic,
Angela Carrasco, daughter of renowned
musician and guitarist Blas Carrasco, has
had a career spanning more than 30 years.
Carrasco first enjoyed success in Spain for
her portrayal as Mary Magdalene in the
Spanish adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar. In the late ’70s she gained recognition
across Latin America, United States and
Europe with such hits as “Cariño Mio”
(“Love Of Mine”) and “Quererte A Ti”
(“Loving You”). Throughout her career,
Carrasco has recorded more than 15
albums, immersing herself in the Latin pop,
ranchera and Afro-Caribbean genres, and
received numerous music awards.
Emerging from the Música Popular
Brasileira movement, singer/songwriter/
guitarist Djavan took the genre to a new
level with a sonic stew of samba, funk, pop,
and smooth jazz. Djavan gained attention
and recognition after he recorded his first
album, A Voz, O Violão, A Música De
Djavan in 1976. He recorded more than 30
albums, which include his best-known and
acclaimed compositions “Meu Bem
Querer,” “Oceano,” “Se...,” “Faltando Um
Pedaço,” “Esquinas,” “Eu Te Devoro,” and
“Serrado.” His songs have been recorded by
an array of artists including Gal Costa, Al
Jarreau, Ney Matogrosso, Carmen McRae,
Daniela Mercury, and Caetano Veloso.
Formed in 1962 by pianist Rafael
Ithier, Puerto Rican salsa music orchestra El
Gran Combo De Puerto Rico represents one
of the country’s most successful music
groups. El Gran Combo sum up the
restrained elegance and jazzy swing of
traditional salsa, underscoring Puerto Rico’s
invaluable contribution to Latin music. In
2012 El Gran Combo celebrated their 50th
anniversary with on a tour across five
continents. El Gran Combo, Ithier and many
founding members continue to perform
around the world.
Cuban singer/songwriter/guitarist
Pablo Milanés is recognized as one of the
founders of the Cuban nueva trova music
style. In the early ’50s, Milanés moved to
Havana with his family to study at the
prestigious Municipal Conservatory of
Havana. Milanés has released more than
40 albums and collaborated with countless
artists from Cuba, Spain and Latin
American. “Yolanda” and “El Breve
Espacio En Que No Estás,” are two of his
timeless anthems that evoke the poetic
search of a man who took Latin music to a
new level of creativity and credibility
representing the essence of Cuban music.
Trustees Award: This Special Award
is presented by vote of The Latin Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees to
individuals who have made significant
contributions, other than performance, to
the field of recording during their careers.
Uruguayan violinist Federico Britos
is one of the most skillful and celebrated
musicians from Latin America. Britos
began playing violin at age five, has
served as principal chair, soloist and
concertmaster with some of the most
renowned symphony orchestras in Cuba,
Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He has
worked with a variety of musicians,
including Cachao Lopez, Bola de Nieve,
Juan Luis Guerra, and Astor Piazzolla. As
a composer, Britos has written and
recorded countless works for orchestras,
chamber ensembles, ballet, and dance. He
has also composed music for film, TV and
theater.
Chilean record producer and sound
engineer Humberto Gatica has worked
with Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Luis
Miguel, Alejandro Sanz, and Shakira
among others. Gatica paved the way for a
new generation of Latin American
professionals and continues to provide his
magic touch to all his projects.
Since 2014 Gatica has served as the
head of the audio engineering and
production department at Isin and L.A.
based mentorship program providing
individuals worldwide with the preparation to excel in music through study and
practice.
With a catalog of more than 1,000
songs, including the timeless Latin
anthem “Ansiedad” (made famous by Nat
King Cole), songwriter Chelique Sarabia
become a renaissance man of Venezuelan
culture. A prolific creator, Sarabia
combined joropo with boleros, rancheras
and jazz, creating a rich mosaic of
timeless pop.

The foundation, in cooperation with the Comptroller’s office,
encourages Texas families to save
for college by offering competitive
matching scholarships and tuition
grants to Texas students who are
beneficiaries of a Texas Tuition
Promise Fund® (TTPF) account —
the state’s prepaid college tuition
plan.
“Match the Promise scholarships help children all over our
great state realize their dreams of a
college education while also
encouraging families to take steps
now to prepare for their children’s
futures,” Hegar said.
“During the 2014-15 school
year, 75 Texas students were
approved for Match the Promise
scholarships. These young people
represent the future of the Lone
Star State, and we’re excited about
awarding a new batch of scholarships this year.”
Fifth through ninth graders
whose families have an annual
income of $100,000 or less and
who have a TTPF account may
apply for the matching scholarships and tuition grants through
Dec. 31, 2015. To be considered for
a scholarship, students must write
a career essay and meet other
requirements.

Mexic-Arte Museum is
dedicated to cultural enrichment and
education through the collection,
preservation and presentation of
traditional and contemporary Mexican,
Latino, and Latin American art
and culture to promote dialogue and
develop understanding for visitors of all
ages. Since 1984, Mexic-Arte Museum
has produced and presented cultural and
educational programs for communities in
Texas.
Mexic-Arte Museum is one of
the first museums in the United States to
pre-sent Mexican and Mexic American
art.
In 2003, the 78th Legislature of
the State of Texas recognizing the
uniqueness a significant cultural role of
Mexic-Arte Museum, it designated it as

St. Austin Catholic Church To Hold Holiday Fair
St. Austin Catholic Church
( Guadalupe and 21st ) will hold its
Holiday Fair on December 5th and
6th.
The
market fair
is a
Christmas
market
and
community social
to raise
funds for
parish
ministries
and to
offer the opportunity to shop from a
selection of unique items and gifts,
including Fair Trade vendors and
alternative giving options as well as
handmade arts and crafts.
Parish ministries use this fun
event to help
raise money
for their
ministry’s
activities
during the
year, and
many parishioners rent a
table to
support their
own businesses.
