January 2015 - Village Quilters Guild
SEW WHAT’S NEW Page 1 January 2015 Congratulations to everyone who made our impressive fund-raising results possible. January 2015 The amazing success of our holiday boutique means we can all put away the Christmas fabric for a few months and settle into other winter projects. As a bona fide third-generation California wimp, I just need the slightest nip in the air to make me feel like stitching cozy flannel creations during these brutal San Diego winters. I’m working up the courage to start a lap quilt in a challenging design that my son and his fiancee have chosen for their wedding gift (the ceremony is in June, so I have a deadline for conquering those dreaded pieced circles). Meanwhile, l hope to finish assembling and machine quilting two group-project baby quilts and maybe even get around to machine-quilting a Jan Krentz pyramid quilt that’s been sandwiched and waiting for divine quilting inspiration for longer than I’d care to admit. In the absence of heavenly ideas, I think it’s time to get back down to earth and be content with getting it done. I’m not making any promises or resolutions, but wouldn’t it be great to finish it before Jan returns to give a program and workshop in March? Thanks to Diane DeWeese’s impressive one-woman show during sharing time at the December meeting, I have been inspired in another way — by rediscovering one bit of wisdom: There’s no shame in enlisting the help of a longarm quilter to tackle a leaning tower of UFOs. I can think of one philanthropic quilt in the UFO pile that’s crying out for someone else’s help, and who knows what else I’ll find beneath it? Maybe a preemie quilt? Or one for Hidden Valley House? Just as long as it’s not an unfinished Christmas potholder, I’ll be content. Happy sewing till we meet again, Carol Goodhue Shull, Village Quilters president SEW WHAT’S NEW Page 2 January 2015 Hospitality The holidays are behind us and I'm guessing that a few of us might be watching our calories. Adding our sales at the guild luncheon to the boutique total we earned ourselves a whopping total of $3379.38 ! You girls outdid yourselves! Thank you again for your participation. Your time, efforts and donations of fabric help make this a success. Give yourselves another pat on the back! We have a good stock of runners and kits for next year so we can coast for a few months. We sold a few child sized quilts so we may make a few of those for the next boutique. We will need potholders and some mug rugs also. If anyone has any suggestions for items or patterns that they like to use please contact me. I am always open to new ideas. Put your feet up, grab a mug of cocoa and relax. You have earned it. Enjoy the holidays and have a happy New Year. She says: I started sewing in 2002 & started blogging in May of 2009. The goal when I started my blog was to share my quilts & have a journal of them. I'm a girl who loves fabric and loves to design & sew quilts! Since starting my blog, I've been published in many magazines, started my own pattern company & developed the Hex N More Ruler & Sidekick Ruler. I wrote a book that was released in August of 2012. It is called "Skip the Borders" and is published by Martingale. You can find it in local quilt shops & bookstores. I also have done many free online tutorials. I contributed over at the Swatch & Stitch with my column called A Little Birdie Told me. In addition I've also contributed to the Moda Bake Shop and was featured in Fresh Fabric Treats which was published by Stash Books in May 2011. There were several that were not returned so if you are one of them please get the blocks to Annie so she will have enough for a quilt. The following members have signed up to bring blocks for the remainder of our year: January Kathy Greene February Carol Yuiska March Barb Maietta April Lynnell Hallock May still needed Thank you to everyone who volunteered.
