President’s Message
January, 2015
Happy New Year to all! I hope everyone had a
wonderful holiday season.
Our November meeting had a light attendance
due to the weather. I also hope we don’t have
any more winter storms on Guild meeting night
again this winter. If that should happen and we
need to cancel, we will try and get the word out
via our blog.
Our program and workshop committees have
some very interesting things lined up for the
next few months. You won’t want to miss our
in house “shop hop” in January and Michelle
Dunn in February. Stop by the workshop table
and see the classes that are coming up. The
classes for February, March and April are a
chance to see and try a new skill with some
great teachers, at a nominal fee.
Have you considered entering a quilt in a show
beyond our own quilt show? The Grand
National Quilt Show in Kitchener is looking for
entries of any size that have been completed
within 2011 – 2015. Complete requirements
and details can be found at
www.grandnationalquiltshow.ca Entries must
be submitted by Feb. 27, 2015.
Happy Quilting!

Quilts for Others
Quilts for Others had a wonderful
turnout on the Wednesday afternoon
of the last meeting, despite the nasty
weather. Eight women braved the
wind, snow and icy roads to help put quilts together.
We cut batting, sewed backs and all in all prepared 18
tops for quilting. We have some gorgeous quilts to give
away to needy groups. I look forward to showing these
quilts to you as they come up for donation. Thank you
for your help.
In the early spring I plan to have another work session
to prepare the rest of our Mystery Quilts. Stay tuned!

January 2015 we have invited several of the local quilt
shops do a “mini” shop hop. There will be demonstrations,
fabric. and or kits to buy. We will also have our own Susan
Bowslaugh and Paula Perri explaining what judges are
looking for when a quilt is entered into a juried show. Bring
your Christmas money. This should be a fun evening
February 18 our guest speaker will be Michelle Dunn of
Kallisti Quilts. Michelle will also bring fabric to sell.
Michelle carries fabric not available in quilt shops. This is a
chance to stock up on some unusual fabric. I am sure the
Trunk Show will be inspiring and well worth seeing.
February 19 Roberta Masecar will be doing a workshop
“Glitzy Bags” Sign up early as Roberta’s workshops fill fast.
March 18 our guest speaker and trunk show will be Tracey
Lawko. Tracy is an award winning textile artist who creates
densely stitched landscape art. I am sure her talk and trunk
show is not to be missed
March 19 we are fortunate to have Gunnel Hag to do a
workshop called “Color and Texture for Quilters. Some of
you may be familiar with Gunnel’s work. For those not
familiar, she studied textile design in Sweden and England,
and was a founding member of the Textile Printers and
Dyers Assoc. whose publication Surfacing Journal and
annual conferences held at Harbourfront changed the
position of textiles in the crafts and fine arts arenas of
Canada. She taught at Sheridan College for 12 year and
continues her role as a teacher at Haliburton School of Art,
and has been visiting lecturer at the National Institute of
Design in Ahmedabad, India. This should prove to be an
interesting day. The fee for Gunnel’s workshop has been
increased to $50.00 for member and $65.00 For nonmembers
April 15 we are fortunate to have Hillary Rice as our guest
speaker/trunk show. The topic of her talk will be “Along
the Silk Road”. Hillary is an award winning textura l artist
and said to one of Canada’s best Textile and Mixed Media
Artists. The workshop is called “For those who are willing
to think” Learn the basics of creating a pattern that uses
the Top-stitch Curved piecing methods. The main building
block of her quilt patterns. This is sure to be exciting and a
chance to learn new techniques. The fee for Hilary’s
workshop will also be $50.00 for members and $65.00 For
non-members

November 2014 Meeting
Award winning quilt artist, Elizabeth Dillinger
wowed us with her amazing collection of art
quilts, revealing her personal methods for
finding inspiration to create designs and shared
tips to help you listen to your inner design
voice. She believes that embellishment is like
make-up and mistakes are the steps to greater
work. Sharing her recent quilts, Elizabeth
covered all the basics from where do I start?,
planning the design, colour value and what's
next once the quilt top is completed.

It is always a sad occasion when an established store has to
close down. It is particularly disappointing when it is such a
store as Kismet Wool Shop, which has been part of the St.
Catharines craft scene for many years.
We will miss Sheila and Bev and all their helpfulness.
Please support them at the Guild Mini Shop Hop and during
the closing of their shop.

To our valued Customers
December 2014
It is with extremely heavy hearts and mixed
emotions that we have decided to close Kismet Wool
Shop in 2015.
We purchased this shop when Frieda passed away
nearly 10 years ago, but we feel it is time for us to
retire. Our customers have been instrumental in
making our business a huge success and we are
forever grateful.
We are open to the prospect of selling if you or
anyone you know is interested in taking this over. We
are constantly being told by customers that they are
really glad we are here, so there is a need and this
shop would surely be missed. Please feel free to
approach us with any serious inquiries.
Beginning in January 2015, we will be having various
discounts on yarn and patterns and everything in
between.
We will really miss our customers who have become
our friends as well.

QUILTS OF VALOUR - CANADA
The mission of Quilts of Valour Canada is to provide a quilted hug to our armed forces personnel – wounded veterans and actively
serving soldiers. Many of the men and women who have chosen to preserve our freedoms and our peaceful Canadian lives are
themselves often in need of mental and emotional healing. Quilted “hugs of love from across Canada” ar e one tangible way we in
turn are able to say “thank you Canadian soldiers”.
Our Guild is participating in the Hugs Mugs Project. For the price of $5, you can purchase a ceramic mug that contains the fa bric
patches and instructions to complete one 9 inch quilt block. When you sign and then mail the block to one of the co-ordinators
across Canada, she in turn arranges for your block to be sewn with others such that the finished quilt represents all the pro vinces
and territories, creating a quilted hug across Canada. Quilts are presented in formal ceremonies which often turn out to be ver y
moving and emotional events. The provided fabric is from the Oh Canada! line produced by Northcott.
At our January meeting, the new local Niagara Region contact person, Gina DeLorenzi, will be selling the Hugs Mugs. Please stop by
the table and learn more about how you can contribute a little or a lot to what the Executive hopes will become an ongoing pa rt of
our guild’s outreach programme.
The Guild is currently planning on using a Quilts of Valour block for the Block of the Month for May 2015. It would be much
appreciated if the Northcott fabric was used for this block.
You can learn more about Quilts of Valour - Canada at the completely revised and expanded website: quiltsofvalour.ca
Or call Gina at 905 685 0794.
If you plan on purchasing several mugs, please phone Gina so she will be sure to b ring enough mugs.
