PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello to All!
Happy June to all of you! How
are you enjoying our weather,
which allows some time in the
sun? The gardens are blooming
and looking like we had rain and
more rain; what a great time to
enjoy the bright colors and think
about how many can be placed
in our quilts for the 2006 Show.
Thanks to everyone who came to
the May Meeting and were a part
of the elections of new officers
for the coming year. Congratulations to each of the new faces
and thank you again to those individuals who will be contributing to this great Guild. Oh, I realize that most of you were there
mainly to hear Kathy Sandbach;
and wasn’t she a down-to-earth
speaker with many suggestions
as to how to make your quilting
sizzle. It is always wonderful to
hear the new and creative ways
to machine quilt. For a hand
quilter, it looks so simple! Ah,
yes, one of these days!
Since we are embarking on a
new fiscal year, now is the time
for you to step up and express
2
an interest in some committee or
activity that is of interest and necessary to the Guild’s operations.
WE NEED YOU! A big thank-you
to Leah Bessey for volunteering
to be the Hospitality Chair – did
you realize that she has also
agreed to be the Block-of-theMonth Chair! I would encourage
anyone who would like to come
along side and assist her to do
so this month. Also, thank you
to Esther Norbut for volunteering to provide interesting quilting
blocks to all new Guild Members.
We have talked a bit at the
last few meetings about needing more volunteers to continue
Guild functions. It is true! Not
as many of you are coming forward with your willingness to assist. It’s time to turn this feeling
around and make it your business to find a place to step in….
NOW IS THE TIME!
We also need some assistance in
getting our library books in order
as far as cataloging and presenting the books for easier referencing by Members. Several suggestions have been made about the
presentation; so if you have any
skills in this regard, please let us
know. Also, if you would like to
be on the Library Committee, it
would be of great benefit to the
Guild. This is just one more way
in which you can assist in improving our activities.
Finally, I would like to encourage you as a Guild Member to
be more aware of new Members. I believe that most of us
come to meetings, talk with our
friends and then sit and listen to
our speakers. For the next three
months – maybe that will give us
a start – I would like to encourage you to seek out a new face
and introduce yourself; find out
more about the new person and
let them know more about you.
Better yet, invite the person to
come and sit with you and make
them really feel welcomed. I
hear many comments about
Glendale not being a friendly
place. Let’s make an effort to
change this impression!
I look forward to each table at
the up-coming “Garage Sale.” It
will be fun to see all of the ‘precious’ items that you are presenting. Until we meet in June,
happy quilting!
Ruth

SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP
Laura Wasilowski - Nine Patch Polka
Date:
Time:
Location:
Cost:
September 17, 2005
9:00 AM - 3:30 PM (30 mins. for lunch)
Glendale Central Library
$25 or $15 with voucher; $35 for non-members
Description:
It is easy to adapt a traditional quilt block such as the nine patch or log cabin to fusing techniques.
In this case, improvisational block building and cutting techniques are explored and applied to the
dynamic designs found in traditional quilt blocks. These designs can be made without the use of
templates, seam allowances or piecing. Instead, the fusing assemblage techniques of strip fusing
and random collage are used. The results are free form abstract wall quilts full of vibrant color. (No
sewing machine needed). $20 kit fee.
SUPPLIES
4 yards of Wonder-Under or TransWeb fusible web. (Please do not bring heat ‘n bond or Steam a
Seam as they are difficult to hand stitch.)
Sharp scissors. (Small 5” knife blade scissors work well.)
Paper scissors
Rotary cutters, mat and specialty blades, such a pinking, wavy, or deckle (I will have some on hand
if you can’t find them)
Cotton batting like Hobbs Cotton Heirloom Batting (do not bring batting with a scrim), 2 pieces measuring about 18” x 18”
Quilt backing fabric, 2 pieces measuring about 18” x 18”

JULY WORKSHOP
WORKSHOPS
Katie Pasquini Masopust Ghost Layers and Color Washes
Date:
Time:
Location:
Cost:
July 16, 2005
9:00 AM - 3:30 PM (30 mins. for lunch)
Glendale Central Library
$25 or $15 with voucher; $35 for non-members
$11 materials fee payable to Katie Pasquini Masopust
Call Mary Beth Kile to sign up @ (818) 790-4402. Note that receipt of
class fee is the only way to reserve your space.
Take a pattern, traditional or an original for the base design.
Add a Ghost Layer or floating design, (transparency) complimentary or in opposition to
the first layer. Add additional colors by following a painted water color wash (a painting
on paper). These three layers combined will create an in-depth and illusionary design.
You can see one of these quilts (Passages-Pecos) in Quilters Newsletter, March 1998
issue in the first quilts and new quilt section and AQS Magazine, Spring 1999, there is
a 4 page article. A small quilt sample will be created the first day and then a larger
masterpiece will be started for the balance of the class.
SUPPLIES
Teacher will supply the paper products needed for a materials fee of $11.00
2” brush
3” foam brush (art supply or hardware store)
Small palate (can be foam meat trays or white picnic plates)
Container for water
3 small tubes of water color paint from these colors (choose 3: red, yellow, orange,
blue, green and purple).
3 color pencils to match the colors you choose
Pencil for drawing
Pencils for marking on fabric,
Ruler
Compass
Fabric and paper scissors
Rags and/or paper towels
Tape
Washcloth
Spray starch
Iron and ironing surface (if you have one, the guild has 4 irons and 2 boards)
Stiletto
Stapler that opens up flat and lots of extra staples
Optional: Sewing machine, we only need 5 or 6 machines for a whole class to share. If you would prefer to use
your own machine, bring it.
Fabrics in the colors you want to use (3 different colors that match the 3 tubes of paint you have chosen for the
water color layer) sorted into 7 different values of each. Make separate piles of each of the steps. Step 1, being
white and very pale shades of the color; Step 2, being a little darker, on through all of the steps to step 7 which
will be black and very dark shades of the color. Have several pieces in each of the steps for each of the different
colors you choose to work with. That would be a minimum of 3 in each step times 7 steps for at least 21 different
pieces for each of the different colors times 3 different colors for at least 64 fabrics. The more fabrics you have to
choose from the easier it will be. You will not need very much of any one color - fat eights or thirds of a yard should
be enough. Keep these in the separate steps by putting a paper spacer between them in a shoe box or transport
them in zip lock bags. Sorting is the most time consuming, please bring them sorted and I will help you fine tune
the steps in class. If you like working with black and white prints, bring them in seven steps as well.
Bring a photo of anything that you would like to add a water color wash and ghosts to.

Working with Flannel:
There is no such thing as screw-ups in sewing. - there’s
only design opportunities.
When I’m a grown-up woman, with hair up on my head.
I’ll sit and sew the whole night through, and never go to bed.
Use it up,
Wear it out,
Make it do, or throw it out.
God put me on this earth to sew and finish a certain number
of things. I am so far behind now.... I will never die!
Sewing forever,
housework whenever!
Sewing and crafts fill my day, not to mention the living-room,
bedroom, and closets
Stash Management Flunky
Itching To Be Stitching Pleading to be Beading
Slow Moving Seamstress: Fast Moving Thread & Needle!
Don’t Needle the Seamstress!
Creative Clutter is better than Idle Neatness
As ye Sew, sew Shall Ye Rip
Good Friends are like Quilts. They age with you, yet
never lose their warmth.
When I learned to sew, I forgot how to cook!
Asking a seamstress to mend, is like asking Picasso to
paint your garage!
Flannel - A warm, soft fabric made in tightly woven
twill or plain weave and finished with a light napping.
Derived from the Welsh word gwlanen, which means
wool.
All flannel is not the same. Some is of very poor quality and you may not know it until after washing off the
sizing. You may not be able to use a distorted plaid, for
instance, in anything but a crazy quilt. You may not be
able to straighten it out and it may distort again after
sewing. Be flexible and willing to substitute.
Flannel will stretch. Use a walking foot whenever possible.
Be sure to check the width before buying if you need
an exact amount for something. Some flannel is quite
narrow compared to other fabrics.
Flannel makes wonderful, soft, warm cuddly quilts.
It’s also thicker than other fabric. If you are using
flannel for the back and top you may want to try using
a thin batting.
Your needle will dull quickly. Put a new needle in before you begin sewing and discard it (or save it for
paper piecing) after you have pieced your blocks
Flannel will LINT UP your machine very quickly so
clean often!
Pre-washing is a must.
Dull Women have Immaculate Homes.
LOST: Husband, dog, and sewing machine. Reward offered for sewing machine!
