Volume 35 No. 6 November 2013 NQA Chapter OK 544 Momentum ! Quilters might not be big sports fans. Or maybe we are. Anyway it is often said by the announcers that the team with momentum, even if they are behind at half time, has the advantage. What can I learn from this? Use your momentum. Identify for yourself when you are really on a roll and then take yourself to high speed. Last month after completing the program with my Mother and then the workshop on Saturday, I found myself somewhat lost in my quilt room. I felt I needed to get busy, busy, busy. First, I finished the sample blocks from the class. Next, I completed a charity quilt top for my Church group—Stitches of Love. Then I went to my list of UFO’s. Yes, I do keep them on a list. Two panels with trains will be Christmas quilts for two special nephews in Hawaii. I prioritized the quilts that need quilting for Jim and listed them. I started knitting wrist warmers for nieces Christmas gifts. I am just a happier person when I have things to keep my busy. I bet you are too. Quilting Blessings from Mary Dahlberg OKLAHOMA STAR Treva Hedges Heartwarmers would like to recognize Treva Hedges, who has accomplished 100 units, earning the Oklahoma Star pin. Treva has made tops and quilted quilts to benefit children in the Oklahoma City metro area. Treva also volunteers for COQG quilt shows and other areas of the guild. Looking forward to more COQG members to achieve the accomplishments this volunteer has. CONGRATULATIONS TREVA !!! From your Membership Corner What a fun filled day at the October meeting! Halloween quilts and walls hangings greeted members on our Halloween membership table. Thanks to Linda Thompson, Carolyn Golden, and Peggy Lash, and Junea Clark for sharing their works of art. There we 87 members in attendance at the morning meeting for the wonderful presentation by Mary Dahlberg and her mother Marguerite Williams and 61 in the evening for the laughter filled presentation by Elleen Urbanek. Meg Brosey COQG November 2013 FROM YOUR OFFICERS Heartwarmers Happy Hands Yes, I have been on vacation. Had a great time but you know that it has to end. I would like to report on our last year 2012-2013. You dear ladies brought in 403 quilts, 1 toy, 33 hats & booties, and 1 afghan. Thank You All very much! For June there were 13 quilts, for July 25 quilts, August 26 quilts, and September 35 quilts. Total for the year so far are 109 quilts. WHAT GREAT PROGRAMS In the morning Mary Dahlberg & her mother, Marguerite Williams, presented a wonderful program with their genealogy linking quilts. Quite a show, Marguerite made labels with information & photos of the makers on all of her quilts. I wish I had photos of the makers of my few family quilts. In the evening Eileen Urbanek entertained us with a talk & trunk show. All in all it was a super quilt day. Jeri-Alynn McGee - DayVice I would like to welcome a lot of new members on board with the Heartwarmers project. If there are any questions, please stop by our HW’s table or call me at 745-9337. Thanks, Linda Williams Passageway Shelter Passageway Shelter was our charity for the funds raised during the 2013 Quilt Show for the raffle quilt. During the October meeting, Georgann Guidice presented a check to the Director of Passageway Shelter. She shared tips that might help us to help someone in need. The appreciation for the donation was tremendous. Heritage News Recently we received a part of a very generous donation from one of the guild members. Linda Williams and I are in the process of sorting and distributing these items to the guild where they can best be used. One of the items is the complete collection of sample blocks and redrafted patterns from the Farmer Stockman project. I hope to have these ready for your research use by January. And the panels should be ready for use in displays by that time. Next month, I will give more information on the contributions and all the other details. This is my "Paul Harvey" month!! So you will just have to wait for "The rest of the story!" Review by Mary Piette Have you ever wondered what kind of secrets there were in the Underground Railroad. The signs, quilts, traditions of the past. Many of our quilt blocks are named from African styles and traditions. Did you know Africans had secret societies with secret codes such as each drumbeat that meant something different to each group. Just as during the time of slavery in America, the blacksmith had different codes or beats of his metal work to send messages to the other slaves without the whites knowing what they were doing. Songs had special secret messages. The escape of many slaves to freedom were planned with precision. Plans included maps of the land, people to help them, messages written out on quilts which hung. Not only did quilt patterns tell what to do or when to do it, but the way it was quilted. Some showed the actual layout of a plantation, quilting would show a crop field by the way it was quilted. Whether is was hand quilted, or tied told a message also. The colors used in the fabric were messages. The way the quilts were hung and the direction they faced were all part of the plan. Very intricate planning went into the freedom of many slaves. While making these quilts the facts on the quilt itself were put to memory to help with the escape. I found this book very intriguing. It was so fascinating to read and life changing to learn about some of the stories. I recommend this book highly to anyone who loves history and quilts. Picture Piecing-Creating Dramatic Pictorial Quilts by Cynthia England Review by Mary Piette Let's say you have a picture you like from a magazine or one you have taken yourself. A nice quilt sounds like a great idea, Right. Well, where do you start? Does this sound too difficult. It really isn't. Here is one option. This book goes into every detail needed from planning to finish ing this masterpiece. The basic plan of action takes place by drawing the picture out using only LINES. Yesss, only lines. For the actual sewing, prep work is involved as in organizing the pattern pieces, a must to not get lost. Several construction methods are shown as is any troubleshooting for problems. There are even a few tricks to know. This technique shows how to draw proportionally to scale, enlarge a pattern, section both straight and curved lines, show movement, overlap shapes, alter the fabric all in order to make a beautiful picture that looks real. There are some techniques shown on how to do buildings, windows, trees, bushes and plants, clouds, faces, eyes and embroidered details. Finishing touches are not left up to you. There really are ways to finish this art piece that suits you. Have a design idea of your own, you are encouraged to make it your own. This book was soooo much fun to look at and read. I would love to make this kind of quilt and make it my own. Knowing how to go about it makes it just all that more do-able, Truly. Have fun reading anything and everything quilting.
